Students,
A new basketball season is just around the corner and Im looking forward to seeing you as part of the Cassell Guard this season.Cassell Coliseum is one of the toughest places to play in the country because of the atmosphere our students and fans create. I encourage you all to purchase student-season tickets as we move Forward Together in 2013-14. You make a huge difference in terms of how our team responds each game. Sometimes the result of a game may come down to a single possession, and we all have a role in what the result of that play may be.
To prepare our players and the student section for a new season of Hokie Hoops, Im inviting all students to attend our practice on Friday, October 11th from 3:00-4:50 p.m. inside Cassell Coliseum. We need you to come out to this practice and help prepare our players for the hostile student sections well see all season playing in the nations toughest conference.
Hope to see you on Friday inside the Cassell!
I honestly feel bad for James Johnson. He was dealt a horrible hand by Jim Weaver's indecisiveness. I don't see how anyone can justify paying $92 to see a team that will be light years worse than last year (not to mention the Syracuse game isn't even included). I've bought season tickets for the past 4 years and this will be my first not getting them, however I will gladly take advantage of the free tickets given out to support the team in any way I can.

Yea, I agree. JJ got screwed. My only hope for this year is that we actually have 12 scholarship players, so JJ can at least try to run his 40 minutes of Hell game plan. It'll be a disappointing season, I'm not expecting more than 12 total wins but it'll be nice to see if the Freshman can improve and if Adam Smith is as good as I've heard.
I was so excited last year that I finally won season tickets in the lottery (entered Freshman and Sophomore years and didn't get them either time, complete BS to me) and bought them immediately. This year I won't be buying tickets. There will be free tickets available at every game so I just can't justify essentially wasting $92. But I'll be there every game and am looking forward to seeing them practice on Friday.
For the record, Syracuse is during winter break. Usually they let anybody into those games for free, they just are giving themselves the ability to sell the tickets rather than have tickets that are owned by students that won't be there.
Yeah I understand that.... I was more just trying to make a point that the home schedule isn't that great and the really high profile team on our schedule isn't included in the package you buy.
ya $92 is a lot considering we'll be able to get free lottery tickets to every game. the whole situation sucks because when Cassell is full its an awesome experience. i know i'll get some flack for this, but i honestly had the most fun at a VT sporting event last year at the OK ST game. unfortunately JJ just doesnt have the talent right now to compete with most of the ACC. this isn't to say we shouldn't support the team and make Cassell as loud as possible but i fear its going to be a long season. perhaps a sub-10 win season.
also, why the hell is the WVU game at 1 PM on a Tues?
My guess is that it's part of the 24 hour marathon (I could be wrong).
As far as best experiences: Gameday/Dook game definitely #1. Can't forget Merryland '09 double-OT game, BC '09 buzzer beater, UCONN NIT game, etc. I had a really great time during the Greenberg years and it's something I definitely miss. I think he really tried to cater to the students and got them to come to the home games.
Yeah, the WVU game is part of the 24 hour marathon.
I can honestly say that the women might end up with more wins than the mens team. Although I said that about last year and it would have happened if Uju's knees had held up for the half of season she played. Both teams will be playing with a good amount of freshmen.
November 9th is a day that everyone should come out to: Men's against USC Upstate followed by Women's against Howard followed by Volleyball against Florida State. FSU is a top volleyball team usually so I encourage everyone to stick around and cheer on the Hokies.
yep...Marcus Smart was really good but I had so much fun switching to a boooo every time he got the ball
if they come out and play hard, i'll be happy. i dont know how many wins we'll see, but i'm a fan and it's the pre-season so i'm excited. we finally have 12 guys on scholarship? seems like it's been a while.
As a student there's absolutely no reason to buy season tickets for almost $100, if you enter the individual lottery you have a 99% chance of getting to every game for free anyway. Although I guess the same could unfortunately be said of football nowadays too...
Plus, if you can't get a ticket through the lottery, it's not hard to get one from someone who did get one.
Not for nothing, because $77 is still way too much to watch this team play, but where did the $92 come from? Did they reduce the price or did I miss something here?
At $77 you better get front row seats and a guarantee for football season tickets next year.
I think there's a $15 processing charge if I'm remembering correctly from last year.
that's my memory too. its just like buying football season tickets
That is the missing piece of the puzzle. Forgot about that little gem. I remember paying that for football tickets now that I see that.
You're not guaranteed front row seats, but the season ticket holders definitely have the better seats in the student section. They're the lower rows of the section.
I know how the seating works, I was just saying for that price, you better get the good stuff.
^Also, that isn't an attack on you, I've just been around long enough to know how it works and also I'm the one that put redo the numbering in Cassell this summer so now everyone can find their seat. You're all welcome. Heat guns are boring, thank god for Pandora.
So $7 a ticket to each game is too much? Come on now. Be realistic. If you want the same seat to the games and the ability to sit with the same people at all times, $7 is worth it. I'm not saying you should buy the tickets, but to say that $7 per game is too much, you're being ridiculous.
$7 a ticket isn't too much by itself, but it's hard for some to justify when they're basically guaranteed to get one for free to every game. You can totally sit with the same people every game sans season tickets as well. You just have to send one person to pick up all the tickets at once (this is the way you're supposed to do it), that said, you can pretty much just go sit with whoever you want to sit with at games anyway. Last year at the UVA game, one guy did check our tickets, and make us move to our assigned seats, but only because some people who came 10 minutes into the game couldn't find seats and went to the ticket guys about the fact that there were people in their assigned seats.
I get paid to go to the games since I work there, so I didn't really care. I was just wondering where the extra $15 was coming from, which as it was pointed out, I forgot about the processing fee. Which I should have remembered since I paid it when I bought student season tickets for football my extra semester.
And it terms of Cost/Benefit, I'd say $7 actually might be just (key word here) a dollar or two over which it nitpicking, but considering a lot of things like the talent on the court, the opponents, the atmosphere, food and whatever else it just isn't worth it to most people. Personally, I'd pay 10-15 at ODU when they were doing good; last years 5 win season, not so much. Same with our current team. When I was a freshmen, $10 a ticket was probably a good deal because you had the ever entertaining Greenberg and the likes of Delaney, Allen, T Bell, and you get the point. This year, considering I see practices and stuff, it will be fun to watch the freshmen grow, but from a W/L standpoint, probably will not be pretty. This same argument can be made for football as well, which it has in other forums. $50 a ticket is a lot when you factor in last year's record, buying multiple tickets, hotels and all that, but even lowering it $10 to $40 would probably bring in that fan that is teetering on whether to buy or not.
It's late and I don't even know if I make any sense at this point, but I was asking for a simple answer and was making a lighthearted poke about the team, didn't realize I was being ridiculous.
Edit: Also what he said above me.
That's my gripe with the basketball tickets. They preach about needing students to go to the games, but don't reward the loyal students. I had a group that got tickets for 4 straight years, with progressively worse seats. It just sucks how they treat those who are loyal to the sports programs (minus the fact that we get season tix at severly discounted prices).
Agreed. I've complained about that countless times, but it doesn't look like any change is coming. It's unfortunate because that's the only logical way to encourage people to go to games.
