Decent ESPN article on perception

AA wrote a pretty good article on how the SEC and ACC are perceived.

The ACC is the #3 conference now though.

I actually read this one earlier this morning (I know I know, I was reading the ACC blog, Im sorry! I just get so bored at work sometimes...) And AA actually makes a pretty good point. I'm probably just as sick of the SEC bias as the next guy

"The Big Ten is always using excuses to cancel games with us. First Wisconsin. Then Wisconsin. After that, Wisconsin. The subsequent cancellation with Wisconsin comes to mind too. Now Penn State. What's next? Wisconsin?" -HorseOnATreadmill

This is a a pretty impressive counterargument to the stereotypical "SEC! SEC! SEC!" nonsense that ESPN spews. Too bad it's posted in the ACC blog. I doubt anybody outside of ACC fans will even get to read it.

Of course mama giraffe has us losing to Miami. What a douchey 4 letter "C" word she is!

They have beaten a ranked Florida team and we have not. They have proven a lot more that we have so its not a big surprise anyone would have Miami over us right now.

Yeah but that FL team is suspect. They have a great D like us but the offense at the time Miami beat them couldn't find the EZ if they wanted to. Other than that, they have proved nothing by beating FAU, Savannah ST, and clawing back to beat GT.

But what have a done to warrant a win prediction? Barely score against ECU? Need 3 OTs to beat Marshall? We haven't done anything to earn those predictions yet.

Not saying they're right, but many college football analysts are calling VT UF-lite. VT is like UF, relies completely on their defense, but UF has both the better defense and offense. So, I'm guessing most college football analysts would project Miami beating UF-lite, since they've already beat UF. Hopefully, after the Miami game, they'll start calling UF VT-lite.

I'd contest that we are better than UF on defense (certainly) and on offense (maybe? on a good day? It's at least negligible). The issue is that the ACC has been assumed to be SEC-lite for so long now, that perception is hard to shake in one season (even when it isn't true).

It was a catch

Cheese has 6 letters.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Thought the same thing when I read this article. After reading the last paragraph I thought to myself... no way Mama G wrote this. Sure enough it was AA.

Would be nice if people outside the ACC would read this, but alas, it is just for us to complain more about the SEC bias.

True but the last part said it all. When the SEC has won so many Nat'l Championships in a row, it's very hard to argue against them.

But how much of them having won 7 Champs in a row has to do with the fact that the SEC's on a goddamn pedestal? I mean, one year there was no choice other than having an SEC Champ! Ridiculous.

I'm not saying that the hype doesn't help it, but there was a point before the hype where they were good on their own. Beyond that the biggest difference between the SEC and other conferences is that the top of the conference is deeper and stronger than others. The bottom of their conference isn't much better than any other conference. Miss St, Ole Miss, Vandy, Tenn, Auburn, Mizzou - none of those are scary teams.

Unless you're Georgia...

Yes, there may be a bias...but there is also the fact that whether they were "biased" into the championship game or not, they won it on the field. Seven straight years. In a row?!

I absolutely agree. I was more making a mock on how people either complain about the SEC or are upset we aren't in the SEC. From what I've gathered, SEC is football and football only. Which isn't a bad thing, but I enjoy being in the ACC where it is competitive in football, basketball, soccer, baseball, volleyball, wrestling, and I'm sure a couple others. Football will be a driving force since it is the revenue generator, but as a sports fan I enjoy them all equally.

well it's not too difficult for the SEC to win the National Championship when both teams playing for it are from the SEC

Also, not hard to win when a way overrated Ohio State team backs into the game by winning a pretty piss poor and waaay inflated big10 conference only to lose in two consecutive blowouts

Onward and upward

Mind you that because of injury, UGA had to use their 3rd and 4th-string RBs, as well as 2nd- and 3rd-string WRs, to beat Tennessee. But that's about the only defense I'll put up.

The rest of AA's points I have no problems with.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

They have the SEC all time passing leader and a monster OL. Any RB should be able to run behind them

I've been telling so many non-ACC people for the last year that the ACC is far and beyond better than the Big10 right now. The problem is that those programs have history, so a lot of people just automatically equate a great past with at least a decent team right now. I mean, if you work down the line of Big10 teams vs. ACC, the ACC teams are better. But the Big10 teams get the TV coverage and the nostalgia to have the perception of being better.

Rip his freaking head off!

It's interesting that she cited FSU's bowl win last year as an example of ACC teams being criticized for not winning convincingly enough against weak competition. FSU's biggest critic in the media after that win, by far, was Heather Dinich.

Pretty good read though, she makes some good points.

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.
