Well shit. That sucks. I hope everything is ok.
Let's just say it is not.
I had no idea J Ham was apart of the coaching staff.
He's a great dude. He was an all around team player. I think he started off as a WR, then went to RB, and by the time he was senior he was playing safety.
Hope his family is doing alright.
Yeah, this isn't going to end well
Ah man, wasn't the assumption that he'd be the heir apparent to Bud?
Hope all turns out well with his family.

Saw rumors about this earlier this morning.
Hmmmm.
This is baddddd. Not just because your losing an experienced coach who was well liked but the reasons behind it MIGHT relate to conduct.
In what way?
Edit: See below
I wonder if it has anything to do with diggy1973 tweets. According to this poster Galen slept with the guys wife while he was using hotel rooms paid for by VT
https://twitter.com/diggy1973/status/989864240558243842
Yikes
Time and place.....some stuff should stay on the twitterverse....... not a good look.....but well shit this is not good.
Where there is smoke...
HOLY SHIT
HE'S PUTTING IT ALL OUT THERE
I don't know how real it is. The guy only has 24 tweets and they're all about Galen Scott with the dudes wife.
That's my same thought process. 24 tweets, with all of them about Galen Scott and that dude's wife. Then again, if I wanted to blast something out into the world, I'd consider doing the same thing.
Callout Culture at action, right there. Dude #'d ev'rbody.
Yep... that would do it
Bizarre. 6 year old account with no previous tweets blasts his dirty laundry on Twitter instead of going to the press? Not saying what he's asserting isn't true. It's all just weird.
Seems pretty straight forward to me. Guy who doesn't tweet figures out that he can do this, that he can get on everyone's mentions in a very short time if he just joins twitter and hashtags all the right hashtags.
A lot of people aren't on twitter but know how it works and will join when it's necessary.
Said it before, I'll say it again, and probably again in the future. Twitter sucks, and people who pay attention to twitter need to get a damn life. And yeah, yeah, get the fuck off my damn lawn, etc.
As a 32 year old, agree. Wholeheartedly. With all of this.
My lawn will always be open and welcoming for you, my friend. The beer will be cold, and you can even use my bug spray!
If you ever come out west I'll get you in touch with pops (class of '72) to go hassle trout.
I have spent a lot of time camping in the four corners area, and lived in Oregon for a year in my very callow youth, but other than multiple trips to the San Juan in N. Mexico, I've not done much trout fishing out there. I'd love to fish with your pops. We might know some of the same people. How far out west must I go? My brother and his family just moved to Santa Barbara, so I'll definitely be heading west in the future.
He did both at the same time... he @'d washpost, richmondtimes, bitter, schefter, etc.
reading through that twitter feed like
andy bitter is following this guy...this about to get interesting and potentially ugly. odds this is on deadspin tomorrow?
Not sure if its a real account or not, but giving a quick twitter search on "Galen Scott" stirs up some scary tweets from an unhappy user.... Not sure it would be a recruiting violation, more so just a terrible look and unfortunate situation.
If true would at a minimum violate school rules on use of funds.
Definitely true. Would imagine he would be fired quickly if he had not shown himself the door first. This is nothing that would impact the program, though, correct?
I dunno about this. Plenty of folks have wives / significant others stay with them on overnights where they have business.
If you do an overnight to Hawaii where you have no business, there is a misuse of funds.
More of a bad look kinda thing. Football should be promoting and engendering certain character development in the young men of the program. This is not expected at least not at VaTech. Mebbe Louisville.
Many times when wife finds out she will give you a decision. Half or knock it off and make it up to your family. Often times that means a resignation / move to new fresh digs. In Louisville mebbe.
In the scenario presented in the tweets, Galen Scott is not staying with Galen Scott's wife, allegedly.
That doesn't make it a misuse of funds. If Galen Scott were single and found a female companion to stay the night on every visit he made, that would be perfectly acceptable
It's also committing a crime while on the job. In VA adultery is a Class 4 misdemeanor. On top of the public imagine problem, that probably gave them grounds for dismissal.
yea, that's an antiquated unconstitutional law that just hasn't been taken off the books. Since that law was written, intrusion into privacy by law enforcement has been held to be unconstitutional. See the Supreme Court Case Lawrence v. Texas, for bedroom privacy being a fundamental right:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_v._Texas
The mistress should be glad it's not in North Carolina where alienation of affection exists
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alienation_of_affections#North_Carolina
I agree, but while antiquated, it is still used. One of my friends is a PI who specializes in divorce. That law is certainly used as a lever in many cases. My point in bringing up was the university had an employee committing a crime while on work travel (on the clock so to speak).
While I don't doubt that a PI would use coercive means to get the result desired, laws intruding into the right of sexual privacy are not used by any criminal enforcing jurisdiction. They're unconstitutional and unenforceable. It is therefore not a crime to have extramarital affair.
Poor use of judgement for sure, but "misuse of state funds" seems like a stretch unless he was making up reasons to go on bogus recruiting trips.
Bo Ryan did the same thing and the program got off free. I think they'll be ok
Yeesh
Who was he recruiting?
https://247sports.com/Coach/Galen-Scott-630
Mrs. Diggy, apparently.
The football gods couldn't give us one day...one damned day to just enjoy the Edmudi both going in the 1st round?!!!
Not a good look if all of the tweets around this are true.
They knew this was coming, so they gave us the Edmundi to ease the blow.
They need to pick all the Hokies left today just to be sure.
If they don't, then we know they are mocking us.
Absolutely no one in the next two rounds?!!!
They aren't mocking us. They're shitting on our heads.
What round are they mocking TKP to come off the boards?
Not sure, but TKP is about to be off the rails!
Look for something coming out about this subject/tweets.
Yeah, he went after us hard. We need to address it.
Yep this isn't something Whit, Fuente and Sands can let take on a life of its own.
Yeah but if it's fake then addressing it gives some sort of credibility to it.
If it's fake, Scott wouldn't be out on the street.
Wouldn't GS retiring already signify some sort of credibility.
There's somebody writing a piece about it. I'm sure they've asked the administration/staff for comment.
While I disagree with some of Sands's moves for the university, he's done a great job with crisis management, typically getting ahead of the issue. I trust he'll do the same here.
I thought my Friday was going poorly...nvm, I'm good.
Could be worse, we could've committed recruiting violations that lead to severe penalties from the NCAA LMAO I can't even finish the joke.
Well, this is out there
When I first heard it, I thought it was "just" that Scott was sleeping with a married lady while away on business trips. Besides bad optics, that's probably not against policy.
But if he's somehow misusing funds to set up his affair.....not good. Not good at all.
Amazing to me how often we see people who make absolute bank, and should have no lack of personal funds, and still decide to use other OPM to go after OPP.
It's frick'n pathological.
That and his wife will see his personal bank statements.
He has plenty of money and could have kept some in a separate account that she can't see or access.
I'm not sure how it works for you but my wife and I share bank accounts.
Us, we have a joint account, but we each have separate accounts as well.
It's not difficult to do. Let's assume someone wanted a shenanigans fund to hide certain activities from their spouse:
1 - Sign up for an email account that is only used for these shenanigans.
2 - Open a new bank account only in their name and have all communication with the bank sent electronically to that email account.
3 - Get funds into the bank account. Easiest way is to change their direct deposit form with their employers payroll department. Have the majority of their income sent to the shared account with their spouse so things seem normal. Then direct a portion of their income to the shenanigans fund.
4 - Don't tell spouse about the email account or bank account. Never check them in front of them or on a shared device. Use a password that is not used for any other account you have.
5 - Enjoy your shenanigans, whatever they may be.
You sound like you've put a lot of thought into this.
Just sayin'. ;^)
Before we got married, my wife and I had a shared account since we lived together and it was easier to pay for rent and utilities from a single account. I wanted to save up for a ring and didn't want her to know about it, so I've done steps 2 and 3 before.
The other steps...I guess I've learned something from TV and movies.
And when your check is smaller you tell them what?
You updated your w-4 to have a little more withholding taken out.
That would work.
Another option is to wait until you get a raise and have the incremental amount from each paycheck go to the other bank account., The amount going to the shared account will stay the same. Also, don't tell anyone about the raise.
That would be hard for a football coach at a public university in VA.
Why is that? The salary of a employee of a public university may be public knowledge, however, I am not aware of any law stating that the public should be able to see their withholding or direct deposit information.
Employees get to decide their W-4 withholding and they get to decide what bank accounts their pay is deposited into. HR/payroll can only process the forms. They cannot force an employee to fill them out in a certain way and as far I am aware they cannot disclose to anyone how those forms were filled them out (excluding a court order / subpoena / wage garnishment).
The part about not telling his spouse about his raise. Not to mention when the other spouse has to sign the tax forms for the year they wouldn't notice the increase pay but no increase in take home pay?
Ah, I see your point now. The public salary can definitely present some additional challenges. I guess it comes down to how much a spouse pays attention to the take home pay vs. the public salary amount.
Not really. Who really knows what the take home is? You set up a direct deposit to 2 accounts.
that only works if your salary is posted on line for everyone to see anddddddd she doesn't pay attention to a smaller amount going into the account each time. the way my accounts set up I notice if its 50cents short each pay period that's one less PBR.
That doesn't mean everyone does. I know lots of married people that have individual and joint accounts, individual for personal spending and joint for the household. If someone comes in to ask me about her husband's individual account, I can't tell her a damn thing, even if he's using it to pay for hookers and cocaine every day or I could lose my job for breach of confidentiality. That said, I would LOVE to look up a member's transaction history and the debit item literally say hookers or cocaine. It would make my year. Maybe even my entire career.
I was a bank employee and one of the female branch managers saw debits from an escort company in Vegas coming out of her and husband's joint account. Husband was on a golf trip with buddies to Vegas. Not too bright.
Have a feeling that did not make her year 🤔
Others have made most the points I would in response to this.
I'd add: What rational normal person thinks "Yeah, I'm so having an affair, and to better hide it, I'll use funds that, by law, are easily tracked and regularly audited."
This isn't clear thinking. Far far easier to have your own slush fund (especially at that pay grade) and hide the expenditures from your spouse than it is to hide it from the eventual forensic accountants that will chew through irregularities like piranhas.
Except he didn't use funds to pay for anything for her. Tech investigated and found no improper use of athletic monies.
When this convo started that wasn't clear in this case, and I was speaking more generally regardless so the observation I was making still applies.
Definitely a bad situation, but if he didn't use funds improperly it does somewhat lessen the transgression.
This is who's writing the piece. He's got a bunch of info.
Embedded here
Assuming those tweets are true. This needs to be addressed ASAP.
via GIPHY
Fuck!
Probably not a good word choice given the tweets....
So is this why we couldn't afford to keep Chuck around?
(sorry)
We were paying Scott a ton, right?
His salary is listed at $338,000 as of January of this year. I was making the (bad) joke that his misuse of funds was the reason for not having money to pay Chuck.
280? Dafuq? Pay Charley the money he deserves
Too soon, bro.
Got give it to W here, that's an excellent reaction time.
He even laughs at the guy. "He really just took off his shoe and threw it at me."
Still unsure how that dude throws 1 of his shoes, then reaches down, takes his second shoe off, and is able to cleanly throw the second shoe without any pass interference.
I guess if I am in the crowd, I would be like:
Me *first shoe is thrown* "Did someone just throw a shoe??!!" Nah... Must have been a bird that got insi- *second shoe is thrown* yep, that was a shoe."
An OT update related to this gif, the guy that threw the shoes is now running for Parliament in Iraq. Apparently he is running on the platform of free healthcare and policies to help orphaned children affected by war. He threw the shoes in the first place because he was upset with the casualties of the war caused by Bush.
Anyways this IS NOT an invitation to discuss politics, but I just thought it was a weird coincidence that this happened shortly after I posted the gif so I wanted to share. If you'd like to know more, here is the link to the very short article about the guy.
Given this guy's twitter grievances are true, the question is did Scott make up recruiting trips to meet this woman or just meet her while on a legit recruiting trips? Both are bad, but the former is much worse.
I'm guessing (no actual information here) that the alleged misuse of state funds has to do with transporting her to wherever he was going. I sincerely doubt that he made up the trips. More likely, he just paid for her transportation and expenses when he was making a planned, legitimate recruiting trip.
My guess is the food. It's tough for him to add in a plane ticket to Florida to his expense report. And I doubt her staying overnight in his already-paid-for room is against policy. But if he took her out to dinner and expensed it as a dinner with a local HS coach or something, then that could be investigated.
Thank goodness he was NOT Devyn Ford's main recruiter.
damn, edited. He was NOT Ford's recruiter
So I am not going down this rabbit hole, with one exception. Good for Justin Hamilton. He will be an asset.
This.
Bright-side: Frees up salary and gives us another shot to go hire a closer on the recruiting trail.
Was Scott not considered a very good recruiter? I'm not the best at keeping track of who is actually recruiting who. I just know that Vice seems to have gotten his hands on a loooot of Hardees coupons lately.
Good thing the coaches regarded as great recruiters are usually the ones with the highest moral character
I'm looking forward to his stints at WR Coach and RB Coach as well.
Who the hell is this Diggy character. He's on a Twitter bender right now. The fact that re tweeted the same tweet like 12 times to different people has me a tad suspicious.
If he was lying Scott wouldn't have resigned. At this point, you're better off accepting that at least a little of what he's saying is true.
Oh I'm not saying that their is no smoke, especially because Galen resigned already.
I accept it if that's why it happened.
I'm just saying it's fishy that the same thing was posted a bunch of times.
Why is it fishy? Dude went to twitter and started tweeting the same thing over and over again in an effort to get noticed. Looks like it worked!
At this point I chalk it up to the actions of a man clearly hurt, and looking to do as much damage as possible in retaliation.
If its true...I don't blame him one bit. Its better than getting a gun and shooting someone.
Twitter is poisonous....but violence is worse.
Mission accomplished
"Not great, Bob!" GIF belongs here.
How the University looks all depends on how it is handled now that it is public. IMO, it should be addressed head on, say they learned of it, Scott is no longer employed by the university, introduce Hamilton, and move on.
edit: and if funds were misused, make Scott pay the school back
All i got to say is. WHAT AN IDIOT
Is Devyn Ford's dad interested in a Co-defensive coordinator position?
#WelcomeHome
In all seriousness...inviting over a side chick to a room that was already paid for that you are in fact sleeping in too...not a misuse of funds IMO. I mean is it a misuse of funds if you're not cheating and want to...relieve yourself alone while on a recruiting trip?
Were these actually recruiting trips or were they only recruiting trips in the sense that he was recruiting @diggy1973's wife to meet up with him the next time?
1000% agree that it's turrble if they're made up trips. Legit trips...then it's only baby mama drama and character issues that he can recover from.
Did he remember to say Hi to her mom?
If he did, then This story got a lot more kinky...
The only way this stays in the news cycle for more than a week is if Scott made up recruiting trips to cover for his purchases and other activities. Otherwise this won't even be as big as the "Virginia Tech fines players" story was.
If he did make up trips this is terrible and we probably deserve what's coming to us if anyone other than Scott knew before this week.
What hasn't been mentioned here much, is the round of applause that the staff deserves for handling this the way they did. I could see a whole bunch of sleazy programs, I'm looking at you $EC/UNCheat that would've swept this under the rug and kept him on board. Hopefully to recruits this reinforces the idea that we have stand up guys on our staff, and we have high ethics/morals to go along with it.
Kind of hard to sweep Twitter under the rug.
But it does appear that they handled it as well as they possibly could have.
Is it? Because I haven't heard much about this on the interwebs, not to mention him and Justin were really close, they go way back to when they were up and coming coordinators. So the history was there, but Justin deserves credit for going with his head rather than loyalty.
Edit: I guess what I'm saying is if this was a blue blood program it would be on ESPN already. So the ability to hide it, or push it to the back burner of the news cycle is there, at least at this point.
In the big scheme of things, I'm not sure this is that big a story in the sports world.
At least I'm hoping it's not, and I'm hoping that what we know so far is more or less the whole story.
Of course it's a big story for Galen Scott, no matter what.
Eh, I disagree a little, I feel like it's not national news worthy, by all means, but ESPNU worthy, sure! Think about it, a coach uses school/state funds to payroll his affair, all under the disguise of recruiting. I think it's a big deal, but then again, infidelity has been so socially accepted that maybe the conservative side of me is showing out today.
You're assuming Twitter = facts.
We really don't know the actual facts here. Shouldn't be reported as news, other than Scott resigned.
Heres some facts. Now we can be appreciative of our staff's values 😉http://www.richmond.com/sports/college/schools/virginia-tech/i-made-a-mistake-virginia-tech-co-defensive-coordinator-galen/article_4a772928-fa5c-5568-9e63-3eee157d6066.html
It is most definitely TMZSPN worthy
Let's not be so quick to throw stones at other programs... None of know what actually happened - for all we know, coaches could've known for a year, and did nothing until it leaked.
This speaks to my point though, I would say it's safe to say if we did hide it, until it leaked and we couldn't no longer do so, we'd be a disappointed fan base. CJF would certainly be front and center of a online verbal stoning session. So if we did get ahead of this quickly, kudos to the leadership of our program. I mean look at Ole Miss, that was going on for quite some time, you can't tell me a booster or a representative of the school wasn't aware of what the coach was up to.
My feelings right now:

Did I just watch someone die?
"Survived a 1200m fall ... somehow was able to open his parachute on the way down"
I guess you mean you're not prepared for this?
Can't stop laughing at this! Leg.
What a way to go out
I've been watching this longer than I should...
Huh? What's the prescribed time...asking for a friend.
After 4 hours you should call your doctor.
...or call in sick ;)
Less than 4 hrs.
Bout 4 hours according to the commercials.
Something something "for an erection lasting for more than 5 hours, please consult a doctor"
And you get a leg for the leg that you legged!
That might be my leggiest comment ever, in multiple contexts.
Edit: I wish the gif I found had been just a smidge longer. I wanted to put the text on it when she pulls on the hem of her skirt, but it ended too soon afterwards. So I extended the last frame, but it's frozen on an awkward smile. Oh well.
This made me choke on a cracker. In fact, I'm still laughing about it, only now my throat hurts from trying not to die. Leg.
The individual who built that contraption did not get an engineering degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
So it was an internal investigation according to McDaniel's report. I mean I guess it's better that we find out about it and force him out than someone else finds out, right?
Dude let his little brain keep him from a potential coordinator or HC job in the near future.
I'd say it was an organ further south that kept him from a coordinator job HEYO!
hence "little brain", not the bigger brain located farther north
Yeah but little brain also refers to the cerebellum so I thought that's what fireman was getting at.
You're reading way too much into that.
Allow me to paraphrase: "He was thinking with the wrong head." 😃😃😃
Yep, thinking with the wrong head.
I get diggy being pissed off that someone was getting with his wife*, and I get smearing it all over twitter. I think that was rash and will be regretted eventually. Tyrod probably can't pick Scott out of a lineup, so tweeting at him seems questionable. Tweeting that at recruits is just kinda...gross. It looks like this started 4/23 so hopefully we at least have a plan to deal with it?
When diggy's real name gets released, I suspect he's going to wish that he hadn't splashed this all over twitter. Just a hunch.
*(I wasn't totally sold on the euphemism I originally used, but then vtkey quoted it and I didn't want his quote to not make sense. Sometimes I forget the internet isn't the text message chains I have with my degenerate friends)
If someone is with your wife, it's sort of more on you and your wife than the other guy.
I'm also guessing diggity doesn't know anything about university or state accounting, because if he did, he wouldn't be tweeting at Tyrod.
Yeah I think ultimately, if he really did love his wife (and obviously I know nothing about the dynamic) the catharsis that he gets from trying to shit on Hokienation isn't going to last very long, and in the end all he's done is make something that should be very private very, very public.
I'm guessing that his 'plan' in tweeting at Tyrod was to make sure it was seen by as many Hokie fans as possible. I'm guessing most Hokie football fans on Twitter probably follow Tyrod. I think the guy's strategy was pretty effective. He's a Twitter non-entity himself, so the simplest way to make sure the message gets seen by his target audience was to tag every prominent Hokie Twitter account he could think of, and a handful of sports media types as well.
I certainly agree, and from the 'maximizing exposure' perspective, it does seem to have worked. From the 'is that a really douchey thing to do' perspective, I think it was really questionable. It does also look like it started on 4/23 with some comments to a VA recruit who looks like he's not even really on our list (lots of big time Big 10 visits and attention). I assume that Galen Scott was recruiting that guy, and that's the 'reason' diggy chose to include him.
I certainly have my own rage problems, as my labrador who recognizes Virginia Tech football on the television can attest to, but to me this twitter tirade looks like something that was done without a whole lot of thought about the long term consequences, and I think he's going to regret it.
As a lifelong hokie, diggy's tirade feels like he wants it to be an attack on hokienation. While my initial reaction was 'yike, that's not a great look for us,' on second thought, it's more 'lol come at me bro'.
I'm guessing it's not intended as a direct attack on Hokie Nation, but collateral damage that he's ok with as long as he destroys his main objective.
One thing-
He is gone. I am sure more will come out. But every retweet or mention of this to make a snide comment or a witty joke is hurting the perception of the program even more than the original breaking story. Keep that in mind when rushing to discuss the news of the day.
Do people look down on USC bc Sarkisian was boozing in the locker room? Colorado for when Gary Barnett was tagging a student? Alabama because Joey Freshwater?
This isn't a Penn State or Baylor type thing. It was a coach being stupid and getting fired for it. In no way should it hurt VT long term.
Except it:
1) Runs counter to the "This is Home" marketing message.
2) Doesn't align with the family atmosphere concept sold by VT recruiting
3) Suggests misappropriation of funds, which could have a negative impact on fundraising.
It seems small (like the meme of Beamer celebrating 0-0.) It is those little things that create a life of their own and can ultimately hurt perception of the program. Perception is reality, unfortunately.
His point is that perception will not change, vtherefore neither will reality.
Beamer celebrating 0-0 is FAR worse for perception than this, IMO.
We're not the only ones who sell a family atmosphere, or 'Home.' And to almost all VT followers (fans and not), Bud Foster is the D-coordinator, not 'co-coordinator with Galen Scott.' It's an annoyance and frustrating that it happens on the heels of the draft news, but is a speed bump, not a road block.
The overall perception of the program right now is that Bud just put 2 guys in the 1st round of the draft, not a position coach was hitting a side piece when he was recruiting - especially considering he was just let go. It's not like the program was condoning it or trying to cover it up.
I bet the impact of the Beamer meme easily outlasts this. Which makes a pretty sad statement about our society.
An individual of Scott's stature doesn't make a program. "This is Home" marketing message and the family value isn't defaced, and in fact is arguably strengthened by confirming that this stuff doesn't fly at VT. If there was a cover-up (which may be revealed, but does not seem like it yet), then I concede that your point is accurate.
The impact on fundraising will depend on how this is handled. Fundraising isn't like the stock market, it is slow and has plenty of time to recover. Thus far, arguably all the right steps have been taken by Fuente and Foster. If they continue to take the right steps, I don't see how most people would hold an act of an individual against the entire program. I guess we'll see.
I agree. This appears to have been handled correctly.
French's comment is also relevant, in that we don't want the program falsely labeled, and there are plenty of people out there that would love to blow it out of proportion.
It's a week at most, but we can shorten it by letting it go.
The long term hurt is that Scott looked like a good coach, a good recruiter and potentially then next DC at VT. Maybe a future HC. We need to build up coaching talent as well as player talent and it looks like he threw all his potential away in a few tweets.
This!

If you are including discussing this within the confines of TKP, I do not agree. Outside of here, I would whole-heartedly agree.
Is this an episode of BMS I missed?
Sometimes your just gotta laugh lol. You cant make this stuff up.
Yeah. I think this is terribly disappointing for Coach Fu and VT but I think a lot of people are blowing this way out of proportion. It's a long lasting bad look only if the rest of the athletic department was aware and let it continue which I don't believe to be the case.
The RTD article makes it sound like the school just became aware, via email, last week; and that Scott spoke with Fuente when the email came in.
Scott and Fuente go way back, I'm sure this was not an easy situation for Fuente to deal with.
http://www.richmond.com/sports/college/schools/virginia-tech/i-made-a-mi...
Sounds like it's (basically) true according to this article in the RTD in which Scott is quoted:
This is not what I had in mind when I donated to the Hokie Club
Edit: I may have needed a sarcasm tag
Good thing Hokie Club donations, unless you tell them to, don't go to salaries, travel or recruiting. Hokie Club donations cover scholarships.
While that is mostly true, it is still kind of a point. More dollars being earmarked for "scholarships", which are pretty much required to keep the program running, just frees up more TV contract money for salaries, travel, and recruiting.
That said, assuming the reports are true and that nobody else within the department knew of the "misconduct" until within the last week, I'd say the response was more than adequate.
This is not what the VT Athletic Department had in mind when sending Galen Scott on recruiting trips either.
The AD found a problem and the problem was solved, and now we can move on.
Will be an interesting game against north carolina next year...you know, after they hire him
I feel like THIS IS WHAT WE GET FOR HIRING SOMEBODY FROM WVU!!!!It has been brought to my attention that I mixed up ex coach Galen Scott with Brian Mitchell from WVU. I apologize for the mix-up. However, I STILL say this is WVU's fault, somehow.
I think you're thinking of Coach Brian Mitchell
Although it's the wrong coach, this is a decent attempt at a joke. This is not worthy of downvotes, IM(ns)HO.
Upvoting to counter.
Edit: Aaaaand....his recovery is a win. Somehow, this is WVU's fault.
...Obligatory funny gif to your edit MacGruber
For the good of the program, throw this fucker under the bus, publish exactly what he did, say the university is ashamed of what he did, take him to court for anything he essentially stole from the university, excommunicate him, and move on to the next up and comer
talk about throwing gasoline on a small fire. sheesh. Why? why do all of this? Just let him go and be done with it. Everything you are suggesting will make it drag out for a long time and make a moment of news turn into a anchor that just can't but cut from the program.
Damn this story is crazy. Cheating wife's husband contacted Scott's wife via twitter too. Used his wife's email to send emails to everyone at Tech it seems along with the media.
wow, my goodness. the culture of hyperbole on affairs is crazy in USA.... a little outside perspective
The affair: two married people had an affair. Happens every damn day. Sucks for the families hurt but is in no way related to VT. It has nothing to do with "this is Home." It doesn't impugn VT's integrity at all. It's one guy making personal decisions with one lady. Hate it for the family's involved but all in all zero fucks given. Anyone who is somehow offended by this, take a step back as it has nothing to do with any of us.
Use of funds: if on legit recruiting trips not a misuse of funds. I suspect he made up recruiting trips to meet her in places she was going to be to have their liaisons, which is a misuse of funds. Certainly an actionable offense against any employee. In a case like this VT should (and did) take action, BUT it has absolutely nothing to do with VT. It's a personal matter involving bad judgement that resulted in an employment action. Unless it is found that Fuente, Foster or Whit were in support of him using these funds to meet this woman this is where it should end.
SO while it sucks for VT football (though personally I was NEVER in agreement with the "co-dc" titles), it sucks for the families involved more. Beyond that it's a personal issue that I give a big "meh" to. Anyone taking this personally or stating it is somehow making VT look bad is getting WAY too involved in the personal life of others via twitter. Take a step away, go talk with your own REAL family and come back knowing that it affects you in no way possible. Another coach will be hired and, so long as this is the end of it, this will be in past, forgotten quickly as it should be.
I have to agree. The fact that I needed my memory jogged on what Galen Scott's position here was should say how high profile he really was (or rather, wasn't). I imagine this might make some circles on the ESPN NCAAF page given that it's the offseason and there's nothing else to talk about right now. Overall not a good look for the program, but I think this is old and and forgotten by next week.
Good post
Excellent post. Could not have said it better myself.
As long as the recruits weren't in the hotel room with him and Mrs. Doggy, its not a violation.
I looked it up.
I said misuse of funds, not violation. In this instance that is an administrative action
I'm assuming we'll try to find a replacement before the season starts.
Paging torrian gray?
He had his own recruiting issues. I say no to him.
He was neglectful of a recruit's mom. One time. I think Bud can use one of his accrued passes to bail out the Dean of DBU.
He offered a recruit (Clay Dean, ironically) without clearing it with anyone else, and the kid committed. VT walked the offer back, though I think it was around the coaching change. He ended up walking on. There were some other questionable offers, according to sauces on TSL. (Hokie83, IIRC, who is a solid as they come.)
Just like Me & Michael
I'm at my kids elementary school talent show. A girl had danced to "Maybe next time he'll think before he cheats", and another sang Adele's "Rolling in the Deep. Total coincidence. No, I'm not sure if the first don't is quite appropriate for an elementary talent show
Seriously though, of all the sordid affairs I've read about in the news in the last week this ranks waaaay down there.
Just my honest opinion: no big loss. I never felt strongly about him as a coach or recruiter, and felt he was a tagalong from Memphis. Just his roles and titles constantly in flux since he got here was weird to me. And this dude was damn sure never going to follow Bud in my eyes. Congrats to J Ham, I look forward to seeing a former Hokie grow into the role.
I agree that he's no Bud Foster. Sometimes even Brent Venables looks shabby in comparison.
Brent Venables is a goddamned charlatan. Yeah, I could run an elite defense with the recruiting Clemson pulls in. Would love to see what he could do over a span of 30+ years without elite talent at Oklahoma and Clemson. How many first round picks did Dabo have? TL:DR Brent venables/Clemson can suck it
To be fair, Clemson's talented potential first rounders stayed to play another year.
... which is... fucking terrible for everyone else in the ACC.
Like he said.
Charlatan.
I have to agree with this big time! scott was one of Fu's guys and Fu was loyal to him and essentially rewarded him for not much of anything. he was what Bryan Stinespring was to beamer.
I trust whit and fu to make a HR hire to fill the void and Justin hamiliton I think is VARY underrated as a coach I just have a gut feeling this guy will fast tract now that he has an opportunity to really show what hes got. anyone who can play multiple positions on both sides of the ball and contribute obviously is a smart guy.
Stiney wasn't a great offensive mind, but he was a decent position coach and a very good recruiter. Let's not pretend that Galen Scott some worthless coach just being brought along by a friend. He's been a DC before, and (If I recall correctly) got promoted this year because he received a job offer to be a DC elsewhere. Let's not pretend that this isn't a loss.
What about his time at VMI/UVA-wise stood out to you? VMI didn't win a single game in 2017, so I'm wondering if you've seen his position group play and seen anything that impressed you?
not saying he was worthless. but he isn't who I would have wanted as the heir apparent to bud which was obviously what he would have been. I think now it opens it up for when bud does decide to hang it up we get someone better than what we would have had with scott,
nothing really. its just a gut feeling. maybe the bob shoop route. I just really think hes an intelligent guy that is still learning and hes going to work hard to take the next steps. I don't expect it to happen tomorrow. But I think down the road hes going to be a D1 DC at some point at a major conference.
These seem contradictory. One you don't care for because he was a 'tagalong,' but the other you're giving the benefit of the doubt bc he's a former Hokie, though he doesn't have the best track record?
I'm hopeful Hamilton can be effective, but am also hopeful the interim tag stays as such. I think we can, and do, deserve better if we're talking a potential replacement for Bud in the next 4 or 5 years.
Oh I fully expect a full outside search for a replacement. I would love to see Hamilton do a great job and lock up the position, but in no way do I think it should just be given to him. I hope this can be a chance for him to demonstrate his coaching ability and will lead to bigger things down the road for him, whether it's this job or not.
Last year I mentioned Fuente would have to make some hard decisions with respect to his assistant coaches. I wasn't thinking this would be the nature of the issue but it seems he's able to handle even the worst of situations. So, I would say, the program is in good hands though I would prefer not have these things happen to make that clear. I hope Galen gets his stuff worked out and can be successful personally and professionally. This was a major test for a head coach. I'm sure it hurts.
Was it? this statement is speculative. Once light of his use of funds is verified it's an administrative action. In this case I am sure they allowed him to resign.
This was handled quickly. Also, in my experience and through observations, "discussed" resignations are not resignations. Resignation is a one party decision when euphemistic language is not in use.
yes, exactly why I said he was allowed to resign
the main point is you said this was a "major test" for a head coach which I think is speculative. Seems like it was fairly quick and decisive which in my experience is not a "major test", rather a sign of leadership having their shit together and making good decisions.
He's known the guy for almost 20 years and is friends with him. There are plenty of coaches who have their shit together but can't take care of business when it comes to their buddies. That's how scandals get started. I would say it's major test. Loyalty to his buddy vs. his responsibilities to the school.
Agree to disagree
Ya'll think this is the first or the last time this has happened? Perhaps the first time it's been made public in this manner. Louisville had some way worse press than this andthey seem To be doing just fine. We Americans have The bad habit of holding others to higher standards than we hold our selves. I'm not really worried about Virginia Tech what I am worried about is this guy probably Destroyed 2 families and kicked A $300000 A year job out the door.
Umm.. the whole point of holding others (society) to standards we (individuals) often fail to meet is so that we all reinforce the idea that those standards (be it marital fidelity or not robbing banks or civil discourse or whatever) are desirable and advantageous to everyone.
I would argue that the bad habit we Americans have isn't the hypocrisy of saying one thing and doing another. The bad habit is saying that examples of people failing to uphold their own and/or society's standards is somehow a valid argument against those standards.
Scott and this other woman have a lot of soul searching to do, and I truly hope they manage to find a way to make amends to everyone, especially their kids.
Living in Japan, I am often about a half a day behind these stories. So I was pretty shocked when I came across this thread while at work, especially when I noticed that it had over 200 posts. I knew right away this wasn't going to be good...
This is nothing if not unfortunate, but allow me to shed a little optimism. I was unable to find a single word on ESPN's NCAA Football homepage about the ordeal. The website is littered with NFL draft articles, and it's possible that the story gets buried under news from the biggest football weekend of the offseason.
Now for the pessimism. Many questions have already been raised about how this episode may affect the future of the program, especially when it comes to recruiting. There's no way to hide this story from recruits. To my understanding, both Nyquee Hawkins and Mike Sainristil (both DB's) were recruited primarily by Scott. My main concern is holding onto these key future additions to DBU, and the ability to attract others going forward. I believe the defensive secondary is one area that needs immediate recruiting attention. Does anybody know of any other big recruits (DB's or otherwise) of whom Scott was their primary recruiter? He's also an Orlando native, and was probably our best connection for central Florida high schools.
The consensus here is that this is sort of a non-story for the program, other than the loss of a member of the coaching staff. Nobody is trying to "hide" this story. Fuente and Scott addressed it, head on.
Scott made a bad personal decision, and then resigned. There doesn't seem to be a big accounting issue or anything. Doesn't really have much to do with recruiting, other than he had contact with recruits and was likely the primary on some of them.
Yes, there needs to be a transition and some damage control, but hopefully everyone involved understands the situation for what it is. Scott made a bad short-term decision that blew up on him and was very costly to his career. I think that once this blows over, someone will give him another chance. Won't be as good as this one was, though.
If everyone who's had an extramarital affair had to quit and go home, I think we'd all be surprised by the holes left in our world. Cops and robbers, lawyers and preachers, coaches and next door neighbors, not to even get started on politicians. We don't have to encourage such actions, but we also don't need to immediately throw them out like spoiled apples. Show me a man without "sin"...
It depends. Did the doctor have an affair with a patient? Did an officer have an affair on the clock?
Your main point aside about an affair necessarily causing someone to lose their job, I'd still throw out all robbers like spoiled apples. They don't get to keep their "job" just because they may be faithful spouses, haha. (Just thought it was a funny addition to your list.)
You mentioned preachers, since you did I will let you know that they are out of the ministry if they have an affair or even get divorced without an affair happening. If they are married to a lady who is divorced most churches won't even hire them to preach. I know I'm going to lose legs for this but I had to speak up on this subject, there is no hole left in the world if a crooked preacher is kicked out of the pulpit or not allowed to preach for going against The Bible. I do hate what happened to Scott, I hate it for his wife, kids, the other family that is suffering, for his relationship with the Fuente family because he introduced Justin to his wife, I hate he lost the best job as far as money and location that he will ever have, I hate it because he was a young coach that was up and coming and had awesome opportunities available to him in his future and other schools may have been inquiring about him, I hate so much about this. I feel like a lot of the recruits can relate to young coaches like him and I hope his replacement is just as good.
This may be approaching dangerous territory given the rules of this site (and I am a seminary student, so believe me I would love to discuss this but I won't because I want to respect the rules here). All I'm going to say is that it depends on the denomination and the specific local congregation. Some local churches don't abide by their denomination's bylaws and the denomination might also in turn fail to enforce them. Some churches or denominations may not even require a pastor to step down in these kinds of situations. (I'm not arguing whether that is right or wrong, just making an observation.) My point is you can't make a sweeping generalization like that as if it's true for every preacher and church.
So much this. The church i grew up going to had a minor schism when people found out the organist/music director was gay. Lot of people wanted him axed (and also fired). The church decided to keep him on because he's a good dude, and within a year the ELCA had adapted their rules to openly allow gays to hold positions on staff. Point is, there is always nuance, there are always shades of gray, and there is more to every person and their story than we generally consider.
The point still holds if preachers have affairs and successfully cover them up without losing their jobs- which is assuredly true. Also while many churches are affiliated with a denomination and follow the decisions of a governing body, there are plenty of non denominational churches that are free to select a preacher of their choice.
Edit:
I think you missed my point about the "hole in the world". I'm just saying that folks are human and that you might be surprised at who may have had an extramarital affair if everyone who has were found out, and then publicly called out and shamed on something like Twitter. Sorry for getting snarky earlier in this post, I know better. Hope this edit isn't as off the tracks.
I don't have an attitude against anyone who has sinned. Read what The Bible says about the topic and pastors and realize that I did not write it I was just stating a fact, of course not every church follows The Bible but that is obvious. I said I felt sorry for Galen and I did not talk badly about anybody. How is my attitude about those who have sinned against The Bible if what I said in my post is what The Bible says on a subject? I never condemned or was harsh about anybody. You also mentioned show you a man without sin in your first post. He lived 2000 years ago and his name in english is translated as Jesus though some may say Yahweh or Yahushua. But point out where I had an attitude against somebody because I clearly do not. No human is perfect and I surely did not say I was any better than anybody else in any post up here.
Let's let this subthread die. Case in point about why we do not enter into religious discussions on this site.
if we can't talk about religion and the bible on a VT sports webiste, then why are we even here?!?!?!
Next thing you know, we won't be able to talk about politics, or post gifs of people throwing shoes at politicians...
well those two things are very different, but i encourage you to try both
We all know there's a line there.
This community does an EXCELLENT job of keeping that line intact and keeping the fun/respectful factor prioritized over the slam factor.
I'd like to refer you to Joe 2 :13-15
Thou shalt only discuss the Lord our Beamer in public forums. For he is the way and the light of blocked punts. There shalt be no other men whose teams be so special.
are you referring to the book of the prophet JoeL...anza?

me right now:
Yes, the Prophet Lanza, and described within the Book of Joe within the Apolytechrypha

Yall are both the worst just FYI
Fair enough. My apologies for wading into religion at all though that wasn't my intent in including preachers among the humans I referenced. I certainly didn't mention or characterize anyone as "crooked". That was your characterization, which came across to me as judgmental. Guess I just misunderstood you.
There's so much I want to say, there really is, but I'll just leg you and move on.

Galen needing some Cole in his heart right about now.
but I'm only human, I know loving you's a crime.
if I take this cookie now, one day I'll do the time.
Oh no I really hope this bad news that threatens to rip a couple families apart doesn't adversely affect The Brand (tm).
Look at all these new comments from the weekend!!! What did I miss? OH...... Nevermind

Wasn't there a rumor that DHall wanted to try to get into coaching? I'm only half kidding, I would have to imagine he'd be an excellent recruiter in an interim DB coach role.
Break news: Galen Scott anagrams to Gal Contest
This. This right here is why we come to TKP: to hear the hard hitting breaking news coverage like this.
This comment seems eerily familiar.
TKP: Seth Dooley F*CKS!!!!
>>>
GS: Hold my beer.
Seth Dooley? i must not be TPKing hard enough this is the first I've heard of this?

3rd item from bottom.
fun fact, you can right click on the -> at the beginning of each entry and select copy link location to link directly to any entry in that glossary.
Noted, but almost all functions other than viewing are disabled on work machine, so I can only do so much. Above is the easiest way given my restrictions...
fair enough. If you can click links, you can click on that -> as well and then just copy the resulting url from the browser address bar. Whatever's easiest for you.
or too hard...
My initial reaction to hearing about another Hokie related scandal*:

My reaction to Scott potentially not being able to find another coaching job with a similar salary, via J. Walter Weatherman:

*I had initially looked for a similar meme and then ended up creating this one for future use a little while after Shane's connection to Wakeyleaks was revealed
its starting to gain some steam in the national social media world. I saw it pop up on my FB Timeline with one of these sportscenter troll pages but almost all the responses were more so going in on the guy whos on twitter "looking like a (and these are not my words but theirs) lil bihhh". basically he is not holding his wife accountable at all and only GS and basically trying to ruin this mans life. I wouldn't have even looked twice at the stuff but the tweet that stood out to me from this guy the most is that he is in there #hokies #integrity and @mainesavage tremaines twitter (im assuming because he was the highest profile recent media hokie he could come up with) but that just rubs me the wrong way. I don't use twitter but this is an instance where everytime you want to go tweet at a recruit....save it and send it to this dude. Be mad at GS, be mad at your wife, be mad at yourself for not hitting it right, but VT, and damn sure Maine or Rell or ANYONE else that wasn't hitting your wife doesn't have anything to do with it.
Start reporting the tweets. Scott is no longer a part of our program, so this guy no longer needs to drag our program/players through the mud.
Mr Twitter spammer is looking for attention. Probably also thinks he deserves a payout from VT and will get it if he just keeps going.
Dear Mr. Twitter Spammer:

*lose
I mean, "loose" could be applicable here too...
I didn't make the gif, just found it online, didn't notice that it had a misspelling on it.
Also, nice profile pic
Maine should just reply "Don't @ me bro"
For anyone in the Triangle, Mike Barber is on the David Glenn show later today to talk about this story and about the Edmunds bros.
