Sweep the leg.

Planning on starting my YouTube Red free trial this weekend, still hoping that Neil Patrick Harris manages to sneak in a cameo since his character on How I Met Your Mother pretty much came up with the premise for the series.

9.99 a month for one show? Seems high.

9.99 seems like a small price to pay for daniel laruso.

The California Sun did a number on his skin!

Apparently off screen he is a pretty nice dude, he just plays an a$$hole pretty well!

YouTube Red is included with my Google Play Music All Access subscription. This is the first time I've ever actually cared.

"I liked you guys a lot better when everybody told you you were terrible." -Justin Fuente

This is the only reason I have ever had Youtube red. However, there is something to be said about having Youtube with no ads. Every time someone without it shows me a video and I have to sit through an Ad i get annoyed.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

What I'm liking about it so far is the ability to download videos to my phone and to use different apps while a video plays in the background (and to be able to turn my screen off and save battery life when I'm just listening to stuff). When we switch our phones to Xfinity on a pay By the Gig plan in a few months, it might be worth it to get it, since I usually only use about 3GBs of mobile data listening to stuff on YouTube at one of my jobs and it's pretty much the only time any of us uses a lot of mobile data regularly.

Johnny You're a Creampuff!

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

Halfway through episode 1, it's so bad, but I can't look away. Does a great job of keeping that 80s nostalgia feel to it for sure.

It's not terrible. I wanted to watch the second episode, but my wife wouldn't let me when she returned to the living room.

I have YouTube TV and don't get YouTube Red. Do you mean YouTube Originals (like this show) come with YouTube TV? I didn't think to check.

BTW, I watched the first two episodes of this last night, and it was way better than I was expecting. That's a pretty low bar to clear, though. I thought it would be a cheesy 80's comedy/schlockfest, when in fact it's kind of a dramedy about middle age. William Zabka's acting isn't the greatest, but it's just good enough to not be too distracting. Looking forward to watching the rest of the series.

yea just spent my entire day at work watching Cobra Kai through Youtube TV

I mean it was better than sitting at my desk doing nothing. But it was solid. Not really worth spending extra money on if i didnt already have access to it.

I'm going to finish the second episode and do a free trial of Youtube to finish the season.

Binge watched the rest of it this evening. A little cheesy in spots (like in the first two) but good overall. Gotta say I enjoyed it.

This show is so cheesy but so fun... really enjoyed the first two episodes. It's not going to win any awards for acting, but such a trip down memory lane!

2026 Season Challenge: TBD
Previous Challenges: Star Wars (2019), Marvel (2020), Batman (2021), Wrasslin' (2022)

I really liked it. I didn't find it cheesy at all. I thought the acting and character development of Johnny were excellent. Ralph Machio didn't impress me but I didn't feel like he much to work with in the Laruzo character. I also found the generational interaction between Johnny and his student hilarious. I'm not going to sign up to see the rest but I'm definitely curious.

I also liked a video he produced a few years back called Sweep the Leg by No More Kings.

So after finishing I think it was ok. I feel like the acting got progressively worse towards the end. They do a nice job of showing how people benefit from the Cobra Kai type training and humanizing Johnny. Also you see Daniel as kind of a bad guy but not really.

The acting wasn't that great the entire time, but I found it entertaining.

Finished it. Loved it.

Honestly, I don't understand anyone that is commenting on acting being bad or not good. Do you remember the original film? It's not beloved for its acting.

Where this wins for me is the conflated struggle between the Daniel and Johnny, Johnny's arc of bringing 1980s tough love parenting to Z generation kids and his slow awakening to the dangers of the Cobra Kai way in the final tournament which comes to a crescendo with the cliff hanger at the end. I like the fact that Johnny actually shows emotion to things that kids face these days, like online bullying telling them to commit suicide, and I like it even more that his response is to get tough and not "be a pussy." And for the most part I think the kids all did really well.

Points I didn't love: 1) Daniel's cousin lighting Johnny's car on fire. uh no, I don't care how pissed Johnny is at Daniel personally he calls the police and the cousin goes to prison. 2) The "steal your girl" circular narrative. I much prefer if Miguel won the tournament, though with some cheap shots, and still had Daniel's daughter as his girlfriend. That would be much better tension IMO. 3) Robbie's character is a tad undercooked for me. Needed more relatable scenes. More arc at being Daniel's student to enable him to compete in the tournament. More tension between him and his father Johnny. And again, while I realize it is bittersweet for Johnny to see, I really hope that he doesn't end up with Daniel's daughter.

looking forward to 2nd season hopefully.

My only real complaint is that Miguel's personality changed drastically in the last couple episodes. I understand why they had his personality shift, but it felt too sudden and I wish it had either started changing earlier in the series or they made the change less drastic and juxtaposed it with the more intentional, radical change in Hawk's personality.

It also felt like Johnny's characterization shifted back and forth a little too much in the later episodes instead of having a consistent character arc, but that didn't bother me quite as much.

Predictions for Season 2+:
Johnny starts dating Miguel's mom
Johnny either reforms Cobra Kai or forms a completely new hybrid school with Daniel as part of reconciling with Robbie
Samantha wins next tournament, defeating and reconciling with Miguel in the semifinals before facing a yet unintroduced antagonist in the final (see theory bellow)

Also saw an interesting theory that Johnny will reject Kreese early in the season opening the door for another dojo founded by Kreese and Barnes to be the primary antagonists in the next season.

I share your complaint on Miguel's personality. It was forced to fit the stole my girl circular narrative and was rushed heavy handedly in a very short timeframe. That's why I wish that aspect was taken out altogether. Miguel saw his girl "flirting" with another guy at a beach party, he acts like a jerk while drunk, knocks the girl down, girl dumps him, he wants revenge on the guy... we are all watching because of Karate Kid, that doesn't mean we want the same Karate Kid story... anyway, like I said that was my biggest complaint.

I loved Hawk though. That was a great intentional change. As a secondary character it doesn't matter because it's there for comic relief.

Season 2 predictions are good and agree.

I think Johnny starts off working with Kreese but sees him damaging his students psychologically more, which is what he was beginning to see at the tournament. And the, agree that he either breaks off to form his own dojo to fight Kreese and Daniel, or forms a dojo with Daniel to fight Kreese.

My season 2 predicition is that Johnny wants nothing to do with Kreese from the get go. The guy ruined his life after losing the Karate Tournament to Daniel.

I think there will be some sort of lawsuit because Kreese created Cobra Kai and owns the rights, and Johnny will be forced out of the resurrection that he created. Daniel will take him in and teach him the Miyagi Do Karate way and give him balance. Johnny will become the Sensei at Miyagi Do Karate because let's be real Daniel has a huge car dealership empire to run. Miguel will stay with Cobra Kai though, under the influence of Kreese.

good predictions

Was pleasantly surprised, the show was not as awful as I expected. All the nostalgia...go team Johnny! All of the Mr. Miyagi tributes were cool too.

From everything I've read, this show's been YouTube Red's biggest hit by far. IIRC they got something like 5M watches in the first two days. I'd be very surprised if there isn't a second season.

Just came across this little tidbit in an article...

One more thing: In Cobra Kai, Johnny ends up having dinner with Miguel and his mother and his grandmother one evening. While there, Johnny asks Miguel's mother why they left Ecuador. Miguel's mom mentions that, after she got pregnant with Miguel, she learned the truth about what her husband did for a living. She doesn't say much more beyond that, other than that Miguel's dad is "a very bad man" and that they don't have anything to do with him. In 1989's Karate Kid III, there's a part where Terry Silver, the movie's main bad guy and a sleazy businessman with lax views on where people should be allowed to dump hazardous waste, makes an offhand comment about Borneo. I'm calling it right now: In a future season, it's going to eventually be revealed that Terry Silver is Miguel's father

Damn, all we need now is some crazy back story about how Hawk's real mom is Allie.

If you play it, they will win.

I guess i am not seeing the connection since Borneo is no where near Ecuador. And I interpreted what she said as they left his father in Ecuador and escaped to LA.

But could be wrong.

It's been picked up for a second season already!
