From Andy Bitter's story on Byrn in the Roanoke Fishwrap...
BLACKSBURG The day Willie Byrn had been waiting for finally came this summer, when he was put on scholarship at Virginia Tech. The receiver from Virginia Beach knew the news would go over well with his family, so he had some fun with it.
A golfer who frequently hits the links with long snapper Joe St. Germain and linebacker Derek DiNardo, Byrn decided to tell his dad he needed money to pay off some escalating bets on the final few holes of a round.
I was like, Dad relax its only like 500 dollars. Its not that big of a deal, Byrn said, remembering the ire rising in his dads voice. And then I was like, You dont have to pay my tuition anymore, so its not that big a deal.
And he was like, Im so wait, what? What did you just say?

Love it! And hate it at the same time..."It's only like 500 dollars"...500 bucks is a lot of money to a lot of people...
I think that's kind of the point. If $500 wasn't a lot of money then his father wouldn't have really been as mad, but when you compare that $500 to the cost of tuition it's almost pocket change.
It's a lot less than a year of tuition.
Funny how kids know just what buttons to push to infuriate their dads. And what things make them proud.

Thanks for posting!
My dad would have punched me in the throat. Then picked me up and cheered.
"Wow son, we are just so proud of you on earning that scholarship!"
"Thanks pops, but really, about that money....I may have bet that Hopkins wouldn't get within 30 yards of scoring a TD this year and now Sam Rogers is leaving me scary voicemails. PLEASE DEAR GOD HELP ME!!!"
My dad would have done the "homer simpson Bart CHOKE" through the Phone, the responded with the Homer " WOO HOO"
Excellent article!
Like Moorehead says, when opponents start game-planning for Byrn, one or more of Stanford, Knowles, Cline and Coles should be open.
It's nice to see how our passing game is developing - I've been waiting for that for years.
I'm not sure if Coles can get more open...
A very cool story. I probably would have done something similar in his situation, because you have to figure a guy with the last name 'byrn' who names his son 'willie' has a decent sense of humor.
