You are looking at the home side of the stadium. I am betting that the other side was not anywhere near as full. Also, if the game was against Delaware State, there was a pretty full stadium. And, UD is generally pretty high in attendance for FCS schools (which is only about 16,000 - 18,000). Admittedly, we are very far away from the glory years with Tubby Raymond's 300 victories and multiple national championships, but we are still ahead of UVa's spring festival.

Funny story, so my mom is a UD Alum and my whole family still lives about 20 minutes south of the campus there. In 2002 my dad came down to Blacksburg with 3 of his golf buddies to enjoy the LSU game @ Lane. One of the guys was a long time Delaware season ticket holder.
He kept saying for a day or two how he has seen "big time" college football before.
About 30 seconds after the start of the LSU/VT game, he turned to me and admitted "I've...uhhh...never seen this"
Maybe it's like when high school football teams use variations of college logos.

My wife works as a graphic designer for a smaller university and it seems commonplace to take material from bigger schools and almost copy it exactly. The university my wife works for has also used the slogan "This is home" in the past and it was due to her boss's "creativity" after seeing VT's design work. For the record my wife was against this and wanted to come up with something different.
