ESPN: VT is #1 "BCS Wrecking Ball"

The story is behind a paywall, so I'll just excerpt. Here's the link if you have ESPN Insider.

Wouldn't it be the most ACC thing ever if, at about 11 p.m. on the final night of the regular season, the Hokies blew it all up with their fourth championship game victory?

"I love it when you guys try to write off a Frank Beamer team," said Duke head coach David Cutcliffe, whose Blue Devils will play in Blacksburg on Oct. 26. Even in a so-called 'down year' for them -- and I'd like to have one of their down years -- no one is going to win this conference without Virginia Tech having some sort of say in it."

First thing's first; let's beat Pitt.

I can't wait for tomorrow! I hope we can pound the run game and finally get that going a little more.

VT 2016
Go Hokies

Welcome to the site!

I love it. Beat Pitt. Beat Duke. Beat BC. Beat Miami. Beat Maryland. Beat Charlottesville High School. And lets get some revenge on Klempsun. Go Hokies!

They messed up when they came down 81.

I laughed at this because I just had to visit the real Charlottesville HS today for my job. (I live in Richmond)

Charlottesville high school.... I see what you did there

Nobody cared who I was until I put on this mask

With all due respect, the VT tiddlywink team could beat the Charlottesville High School football team....they're really bad.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

The real question is, "Could the Charlottesville College football team beat the Charlottesville High School football team?".

Note: I use the word "college" above only to differentiate from "high school". This is not an attempt to demean actual colleges through any perceived similarity of designation.

I think you meant... This is not an attempt to demean actual high schools

Just after I wrote this, I found out that CHS beat Orange 47-14, so if they were to play the college here....who knows?

I see that the TKP legal department has outfitted you with a nice disclaimer, btw.

This guy gets it. All this talk about Miami (and probably deservingly so) but people forget that until some team can win the ACC out of the Coastal (legitimately, Georgia Tech) it goes through us. I know that sounds conceited but I truly believe it.

It's not conceited if it's true.

In years past, people were too quick to laud praise on VT based on past success. This year, I feel like they are not talking about us because of what happened last year. This team is winning and everyone is waiting for them to blow it. Take care of business like weeks past and we will be right where we want to be going into the Miami game.

It would be a shame if VT ran the table and missed a shot at something larger because we played Alabama instead of Directional University instead.

You can make the "What if we didn't play a big OOC game" argument for a lot of our seasons. But ultimately, a lot of being a successful program in both recruiting and getting enough voters to be ranked high enough to play in a NCG is playing big games.

I love that we try and play a powerhouse every year and frankly, I have no respect for teams that play nobody and get in the discussion for playing for a title. You want to be the best, you have the beat the best.

Ultimately, it's just hard to win a national title. You honestly, have to have some things go your way.

Wanted to give you a turkey leg for your thoughts but I haven't hit the 20 minimum yet. Help a brotha out?

agreed...the newbies haven't partaken, but we've been down this debate lots before. I'm still a fan of the big openers, especially after this year. In fact, I think this year might have seen the biggest benefit we've had yet from playing those type of games.

The D has been hyped to the stratosphere (deservedly so) which WILL help with recruiting, we see the potential of the run game, starters are on special team return coverage again, the receivers got a TON of work after all the drops...I'm sure all around everyone on offense hustled that much harder too, including Logan. In the end we are a different team, you can't measure something without changing it say the physicists and we have certainly been measured.

I'm all for big OOC games, I'd rather take my shot at the champs (Bama) then play a sleeper against some scrubs at noon. I'm just saying in this case, if it is the only loss of the year (not saying it will be, lots of conference games left and a potential ACC title game), then it really stings. No one will give us a rematch against Bama, we are not LSU.

The Dude Abides

maybe, but 2007 was pretty insane and things do happen.

I agree, I love big OOC games. I would, however, like to see them scheduled later in the season. I could be wrong, but I feel like ever since we joined the ACC, we do 4 OOC games then the entire ACC schedule. I'd like to schedule the big OOC games towards the end of the OOC schedule or even into november if that was possible. Every time I see a season opening big game, it worries me, especially this year, because the team just gets so much better each game.

With the playoff format moving forward, do you keep the same opinion? Seems like it would be more beneficial to be winning the conference games.

It's really hard to schedule OOC games in the middle of the season. Most of the big conferences just don't do that.

VT probably wouldn't be in the title discussion if they played Directional U instead of Bama. They'd need chaos.

Danny Coale is still open.

It seems to me we have always played our best when we have had something to prove. When we get disrespected and overlooked by the media, when we have a chip on our shoulder, when we are the dogs - that is when we tend to play like angry, sweaty-beaked, Hokies. Oh, and add to this something about Sam Rogers and the Fullers - and that is how I feel about it.

Fortune Favors the Bold

You're daggone right it goes through Tech!!! Just look at last year, when he didn't win the division, there were 3 teams that had to share it, and get their piece while they could. Because they won't have a shot at it again for some time.

Every year when I check the schedule on Hokiesports, it lists the ACCCG. So that means we're playing in it, right?! Its on the schedule!!!!

I always have liked Cutcliffe. Dude is a great coach, he would do great things if he had better talent.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

I got on this thread late, but I was going to say that, for his classiness and acumen, Cutliffe is my second favorite ACC coach behind Beamrizzle. So turkey leg for your quality judge of character.

Agreed. I'm surprised he hasn't gotten a shot anywhere but Duke? I know he coached at Ole Miss and got fired b/c of one bad season.

Don't quote me on this, but I can faintly recall that there was interest elsewhere and he was uninterested.

I think his name came up when the Tennessee job came open the last time

yeah, and when he turned tennessee down to stay at duke i knew something was rotten in knoxville.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

Yeah wish I had a source, but pretty sure he really likes duke and wants to build somewhat of a program there. I mean the way the acc has been, I could see a good duke team making a decent run one year

Please tell me I'm not the only one that now has Miley Cyrus' song stuck in my head.....anyone?

Sorry I don't know any Miley Cyrus songs....

This was the correct answer. I wish I could award you all of the turkey legs

hey now, be nice to uncle hulk!

@historyhokie.bsky.social

I'm a bit confused by this article. His definition of a BCS Wrecking ball is:

those teams that likely weren't good enough to be a BCS bowl team but were good enough to ruin the BCS bowl chances of others.

Yet for us to be a BCS buster (for Clemson/FSU), we would have to be in position to get to a BCS bowl...

Think when they use the term BCS in this instance they are talking about the NCG for the BCS title, not just a BCS game. We could wreck an undefeated Clemson or F$U's chances at getting to the BCS Title game by beating them when we realistically don't have a chance to get to it. (Although, if we win the ACCCG, we deserve the Orange Bowl berth.)

Either way, BEAT PITT THIS WEEKEND!!!!!!

I don't have access to the full article, but I would bet that he was banking on us ruining Miami's BCS chances.

Let's Go...

I remember before the season they asked Cutcliffe who the class of the ACC was, his response "Until someone consistently knocks off Virginia Tech, they are the class of this conference. We strive to be like them." Or something along those lines. He gets it. However, I do love being the underdog.

Rip his freaking head off!

Although I LOVE handing preppy, douchville-south their ass in any sport, I do like Coach Cutcliffe. He is a true class act.

I feel like Clemson is doucheville-south. Said by a charlotte dude surrounded by Clemson fans.

“I hope that they’re not going to have big eyes and pee down their legs so to speak,” -- Bud Foster

I feel like UNC is the most similar school to UVA (of course that's why you all mean by doucheville-south, yes?).

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Actually, I think they meant Dook.

Fwiw, my old boss' daughter had a presidential scholarship to UVa. 4 years, full ride. Visited, said it was too snobby, and went to Dook.

Whoa.

No, I *don't* want to go to the SEC. Why do you ask?

We don't love dem Hoos.

GF_Warthog didn't have a presidential scholarship, she just had a regular full ride (no room and board included). She did a semester, didn't like how everyone was snobby and has transferred to Randolph here in Lynchburg and is in love with it.

It's true. I'm currently at VT, but I'm from Spartanburg, SC which is about 45 minutes down the road and I'm constantly surrounded by Clemsux fans. Most obnoxious fan base I've ever been around. I guess they feed off that tool Dabo.

They messed up when they came down 81.

I grew up in Greenville, and my parents still live there. My mother has suddenly morphed into a Clemson fan, I guess just by proximity. I almost strangled her last year when she told me she wanted us to play well, but for Chandler Catanzaro (of the Tigers) to kick the game-winning field goal...

I live in Boiling Springs SC and have a few friends from Clemson who actually aren't bad. However dealing with the masses at games is a whole different deal.

I graduated from Dorman! Developed a hate for Clemson that equals my hate for LOLUVA

They messed up when they came down 81.

I totally agree with this. My mom lives in Columbia, SC and graduated from VT. She says the Clemson fan base even in Columbia tell her how VT isn't a "factor" anymore in the ACC. *laughs*

"Parrish at the 30….and…the ball came loose! Taken away by DeAngelo Hall, and he..will…score!"

Get this, I live in Simpsonville, SC, work in Roebuck next to Dorman, and just today, I was told that I am going to transfer to Clemson. At least near Spartanburg there are more USC-e fans than Clemson fans. I am going smack dab in the middle of the most obnoxious fan base in the world. I LOATHE CLEMSON.

If there's ever been a time for a "FML", this is it.

hate on me all you want, but I gotta admit, Clemson fans are among the classiest I've ever been around (at least the ones I've met) I ran into one at a party two years ago and they were saying may the best team win, and how they didnt think they'd pull out a win and how talented of a team we have and how beamer was such a great coach...and I just stood there mouth...agape, ive always found it really hard to hate them, although I could imagine a mass of their fans would act a little different

Taylor, looking desperately throws it deep..HAS A MAN OPEN DANNY COALE WITH A CATCH ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FIVE!!!!....hes still open

I have lived here for 7 years now. I can count the number of Clemson fans that were classy on one hand. The group we tailgated beside at last years game in Clemson was very kind to us. The rest have been far and few between. I don't want to hate them. They just give me so many reasons every single day. Living next to Clemson for a time, it's just completely different than I was used to in Virginia. I can take some back and forth with anyone, and it's all in good fun and laughing together, messing around. The vast majority of Clemson fans are just assholes. When I am driving home from work, and a bunch of guys in a rusted out truck are hanging out their window yelling at me because I have a VT and hokieprints on the back of my car, yeah, that sums it up.

Are you fucking kidding me? I was at the '07 game in practically the top row of Memorial Stadium, and I was seriously worried that someone was going to toss me over the edge. Scared-for-your-life stuff, courtesy of Death Valley.

I think I would enjoy a scenario where VT gets to the ACCCG, beats the FSU/Clemson winner, and watch everyone bicker about whether a 1-loss FSU or a 1-loss Clemson or neither should get an at-large bid.

Gotta give Cutcliffe a turkey leg here. He's pretty much right, the road to the ACC Coastal goes through Blacksburg.

And, he coached both Mannings. I swore up and down Eric Ainge should have gotten a better shot in the league, another Cutcliffe protege.

And, he coached both Mannings

Poor Cooper. Everyone always forgets about Cooper.

Well he didn't coach Archie either, to be fair. But he coached both Mannings (from the NFL) or he coached both Mannings (given he was a QB coach) or he coached both Mannings (that played college football after Archie).

I was just pulling your leg.

Cutcliffe has three starting QB's in the NFL right now (Manning Bros, Thad Lewis) , not bad at all.

If he was looking for the job, I'd be more than happy to have Cutcliffe run our offense. But Loeffler, Grimes, and Moorehead are doing well.

I've got a feeling this team will do something special..we don't need a playoff if bama takes care of business and Clemson does as well when we beat them. There will be enough brownie points with only one lose teams besides bama.
