Amidst rumors and shoddy reporting, speculation ran rampant about quarterback Josh Jackson's status with the Virginia Tech football team. That is, until now. Multiple reports indicate Jackson remains a member of the Hokies after questions about his academic status loomed over the past few weeks.

Hopefully he learned a valuable lesson from all this
He probably learned that it sucks to have your character questioned by strangers on the internet.
That, and that Duke's mayo is a quality condiment to add to sammiches

I concur. There has been some wild and unnecessary speculation on this site. I would hope that we as a group can be better than this in the future. I love reading articles and hearing about our team, but the negative comments on jj were way over the top.
I concur as well.
Respectfully disagree. Other sites & tweeter, yes. But here, it was mostly even tempered.
Honestly wouldn't be surprised if he got worse from home fans with the way things have gone since this all started.
Probably because The Athletic is a pay site and this is (unfortunately) a violation of community guidelines. It's a good point, though.
Are there details out about what exactly happened?
A bunch of drama kings and queens heard a rumor, and shat it all over the internet, getting everyone else all hyped up over something that turned out to be nothing.
If it was truly something that turned out to be nothing, VT Football would have nixed the rumor the day it came out. There was clearly something going on but we won't know because, FERPA. This is a bit concerning because I get the sense that he is probably on probation/last strike scenario.
Could they have nixed the rumor if at the time it was something that later turned out to be nothing because of FERPA though? Seeing as the issue was of an academic nature. Their policy is probably to stay silent.
The fact that they didn't nix the rumors ASAP all but confirms there was something going on. Not knowing the specifics of what went on, no one can definitively say it was nothing in the end. Whatever 'it' was, whatever the resolution was, were not enough to warrant his expulsion from the team.
EDIT: and let's be honest, the tweets are "a source familiar with the situation...academic situation has been resolved...remains with team" BIG hypothetical IF here...but IF there was 'something' and that 'something' has now been resolved on the academic side, he may remain with the team but ultimately the team will need to determine if any suspensions are warranted. I am hoping this is not the case, of course.
Look, this wasn't just some internet bullshit. Those of us who read newspapers read it there as well, and despite the way news is perceived these days, I have a lot of faith in the guys and institutions who've been doing it for a living a lot longer than the internet has been corrupting honest and dedicated journalism. Something was, indeed, going on and even Jackson's father chimed in.
Now, the useless and baseless speculation was unfortunate, but not entirely without legitimate interest, and since everybody thinks their opinion needs to be aired, the internet provided that platform. What's new?
Does it? Are they allowed to comment on it one way or another? I always thought that the only course of action when it came to stuff you just can't talk about is to neither confirm nor deny, as any statement could be construed as revealing private information.
Now that, that's cleared up, on to FSU, time to eat em up:

Did somebody say Mayo?

Sums it up nicely. Good report. Thanks.
It's a Miracle (Whip)!
I think it's a moment we can all Relish.
As long as our sauces all agree.
I miss Dustin Pickle.
He was kind of a big dill
It's definitely not a Tweedy Whip.
TKP this offseason:

That's good, QP should only play in four games then this year. /semi-s
Shouldnt somebody apologize to the support staff??
Oh I'm glad it worked out, looks like my assumptions were wrong.
But I do find it curious you take more issue with someone criticizing the staff than others dragging the character of a kid because of academic rumors. But maybe that's just me.
I thought we had moved past that...I saw you personally making some jokes about "support staff" over the past week even.
I was just making a joke actually. It was meant in good humor.
My post was just making light of the situation.
Here we go again....maybe just have some mayonnaise and lighten up.
I have no beef with you. Unless you have smoked beef...then we have an issue.
http://harrypotter.wikia.com/wiki/Minister_for_Magic_and_Support_Staff
I was joking Alum07....chill.
Its all good, I apologize for my snarky as fawk reply.
Hold on... are you saying you don't like smoked beef?
If you have smoked beef and dont share it....then I'll be mad. I apologize for any previous snarky comments also.
I love smoked beef.
I like that everyone shares a common love of meat. Is it a meat-cute then?
I thought everyone was in agreement that these "kids" aren't kids at all, they're adults.
Speculation and assumptions putting blame on support staff = speculation and assumptions putting blame on players
People here have been speculating for weeks.
You can't expect them to give up on that so easily.
I mean, there was stuff on the internet and all.
No problem with speculation...just making the point that some people are trying to police certain types of speculation. Saying it is wrong to make this assumption or that assumption. JJ is not a kid, he did something that put him in that kind of a position. I don't think it is any more wrong or right for people to have questioned his character than to question the performance of the support staff. That being said, I'm glad it is over and we can all move on.
The mentality that I take issue with is "Well, he was accused, so he must be guilty." It's an easy trap to fall into, and it really is the tendency we see in media coverage. I mean, they wouldn't have been charged and gotten all this media coverage if the prosecutor didn't have overwhelming evidence, right?
In the case of student athletes, there's always an assumption that "the fix is in", or that they get special treatment. I don't see any evidence of that at all in this case.
As far as blaming support staff, I don't see any reason to do that either. It's worth a review from the athletic department, but we shouldn't assume issues without proof. We shouldn't assume anything.
In general, our systems have a presumption of innocence, and we tend to give people the benefit of the doubt. We need to trust that there are good processes in place, and we need to trust those processes. It's the best we can do.
All that said, it's an opinion board. Debating opinions is what we do here.
I agree with everything you said. I always give the benefit of the doubt, but the court of public opinion will always be unfair. It is brutal, always, and especially these days. That's a fact. JJ won't ever be spared that for being a "kid", because for one, he isn't a kid, and two, the court of public opinion doesn't care how old you are.
My main point in all of this, was to call out the term "kid", "awe, he's just a kid, blame the support staff instead". Nope. Not buying it. Nobody is doing anyone any good by calling them "kids" or treating them like "kids". Otherwise, I don't have any issue with any of the opinions/speculation I've seen on this topic. I think JJ is a good person overall, and probably exercised some poor judgement, which we are all guilty of at times.
I hope is geared up for a stellar season!
Oh yeah, I agree on all counts.
JJ is an adult, and is responsible for his actions. That said, we can try and give him the benefit of the doubt, when possible. This incident is one such instance.
And we need to get past this. Onward and upward.
We can't be responsible for the interwebs, only what we post.
Don't take offense, but look back when you were 20 years old and ask yourself whether you were a kid. I, for one didn't know shβ at that age. He's a kid, and from what I've heard (from reliable sources) not a bad kid. ...and get off of my lawn!
Guess we've had this debate on plenty of threads, but I can't help but chime in when I see it.... team #NotAKid here, all day long. Young man... sure, but mature enough to accept consequences for actions equals being a grown-up (this isn't specific to JJ, but to all of these young men). I also didn't know a lot in my early twenties, so I'm not arguing whether these guys are immature vs. mature because that happens differently for everyone, but I knew at that age that my decisions would have repercussions.
Using different definitions of "kid" just to argue. One definition is for a youth, and the other is for someone who is new or less experienced -regardless of age. One is appropriate for describing "college kids", one would not be. I have two "kids" in college. Neither is a minor. Why can't we just give whom ever used the word the benefit of the doubt that they meant the one it sounds like they meant instead of arguing for our favorite definition on multiple threads.
Because it's just so much damn fun?
Have your read the cake-pie and/or mayonnaise threads?
You expect WAY too much of this forum.
Because the interpretation implies that the defined legal adult is omitted/excused from criticism or pointing out of short-comings or flaws (of which none of us are or should be). It is borderline coddling and a form of over-protectivism.
So JJ FINALLY gets a pass (am I doing this right)...
But does Bud still get a pass if the QB isn't suspended?
Bud's pass?

The irony
A Florida fan making fun of any school for their football players' legal troubles would be like a UVA fan making fun of a school for its first round exit in the NCAA Tournament.
= PLAID
I think Granville just won the internets... well done!
Sometimes the internet creates controversy....and then there are times when it gives you this. Internet fucking gold!
Bitter tweeted that there's no apparent threat of suspension over the incident.

FSU, here we come!
So we only have to worry who's starting at corner now right?
I didn't see shoddy reporting so much as there were no reliable facts to report.
Fuente will still keep Jackson on a short leash. I hope Jackson learns and matures from the situation and plays his best this season.
The beat reporters and national media handled it professionally.
There were some errant tweets and reporting of rumors on blogs that were a bit shoddy.
This is true..but...
He said "but".
Well, the condiments were amusing.
Now that Joshie is good....can we get Francois suspended for his weed operation?
Elaborate for me, please.
Deondre Francois was the target of a. 2 month long investigation....entered a diversion program.

But he's just a kid!
I see what ya did there!
Recruits rolling in and Josh Jackson coming back. Pretty solid week so far compared to what we've been accustomed to recently.
Honesty, not gonna stop holding my breath till we're sure there's no suspension. The bitter tweet is encouraging, but still doesn't sound confirmed.
At least that's under the control of Fuente.
And that's where I want control of the football program to be.
Something something shouldn't have had that convo with Tom Brady...
Rumor that he's suspended: 500+ comments and multiple threads
Rumor that's he's cleared: less the 100 comments.
I blame the TKP support staff.
Yea but you KNOW they're gonna get a pass....
Welcome to 2018 π
I like to think it's because the great condiment debate spun off into its own thread.
