ESPN: Welcome to college football's never-ending online tailgate

http://www.espn.com/college-football/story/_/id/24011044/message-boards-...

ESPN just put out this pretty interesting article on the dynamic and impact of CFB Message Boards. It has some pretty interesting stories and definitely led me to say "hey that sounds like TKP" a few times.

Welcome to the bizarre world of college football message boards. In the NBA, Twitter is the platform of choice for breaking news and trading gossip. In college football, it's the message board, where today's conversation can turn into tomorrow's scandal or internet meme.

"It's the corner pub that people go to at the end of work -- or, you know, a lot of times during work," Brandon Jones said. "And they're there to socialize and to talk about topics from politics to sports, to laugh sometimes and be crass..."

As a side note it tells a story about the former president of A&M going undercover on a message board for a while until he left the school. This got me thinking. If you had to make a guess as to which TKPer is Sands or Whit incognito, who would it be and why?

Haven't seen this in a while.

Looks like it put on a few pounds over the off-season. Hopefully will get back into shape before kick-off.

Forums are a great way to gauge how the community is feeling about whatever the forum is about. In our case college football and the Hokies.

It makes perfect sense why someone in an administration would be a learker. They don't necessarily have to post.

Butch Jones didn't go undercover. He put it all out there.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Wait, I was supposed to get on my own team's message board?

No way. I am sure they were a bigger dumpster fire than the Football Program you were at the helm of.

Fun fact: I registered my account on TKP after lurking off-and-on over several years. When I did, I thought about making my account VTSandsman and then logging out and continuing to lurk, just to be able to exploit it for the lols later on.

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
“I served in the United States Navy"

That was a fun read. Wouldn't be surprised if this is happening across all schools.

When the thread "Tua-Language Barrier" appeared on the Alabama message board BamaOnLine last September, its poster, a user by the name of Chattown Tider, truly did believe he was onto something. He had just watched Crimson Tide quarterback Tua Tagovailoa play in his first college game against Fresno State and what he saw worried him. So he posed the question: What if Tagovailoa didn't understand English, seeing as he was from, you know, Hawaii?

I laughed out loud at my desk.

That a former director of the CIA, president of a major university and soon-to-be secretary of defense would post on a message board devoted primarily to college athletics shattered the popularly held notion that most users lived in their mother's basement with nothing better to do than obsess over sports. In fact, the truth is quite the opposite, with at least one study finding the average poster to be upper middle class and college educated.

Maybe I should share this with my girlfriend so she is less judgement about how much time I spend reading TKP.

or, you know, a lot of times during work

I'm definitely not at work right now... Nope, not at all.

Hey, I have dual monitors. It's called multitasking.

If you play it, they will win.

All you have to say is you're waiting on a geoprocessing tool to run.

Let's pour one out for anyone who programs in interpreted languages.

"For those who have passed, for those to come, reach for excellence."

You can still get time like that working with interpreted languages. Like today with me for example. I am debugging some Python code on a new development power supply board with the hardware designer. I am talking to him over the phone while running commands manually and I hear "Oops. I just made a spark..." "Wait, what???" "I accidentally touched the 5V supply to ground. I think I just fried the board. I will get the other board and call you back." There are only 3 boards in total and we are supposed to have to ready for the customer by Wednesday (not happening) and one has already been destroyed the day after they were delivered from our vendor. Is it too early to start drinking on a Friday? Stupid no drinking at work rules...

Hah, I'm just a n00b programmer myself. I like to dabble in vba and python to automate tasks at work.

Hey, as long as the work gets done and done well.....the rest is just "creating a positive workplace culture" and "work/life balance."

I have a USB monitor that I use when I travel, but still connect it when I am at my desk or at home... when you combine that with the monitors I have on my desk and the laptop itself, I am running with 3 or 4 at all times.

I just got a new laptop and I accidentally figured out how to use my dual monitors plus the laptop screen while trying to figure out how to plug in the docking station without having to restart. I was very excited about finally having 3 monitors. Sometimes I need a map screen, an attribute table screen, and an excel sheet on the 3rd.

My coworker has a 34" wide screen, and two 24" monitors hooked to his primary desktop and two 24" monitors hooked to his second desktop. Being in IT has some perks.

MEGA DESK

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

Totally rocking megadesk right now. We are ina open floor plan (which is ridiculously worthless for engineers, btw) and my desk is on the inside of one end of a u and no one sits behind me. I had to bring in my desktop from home because I had started designing a project in my own software so I wanted to carry that through to detailing before converting. So work CAD and work email is on one end of the desk and home CAD is in the other. I've been called Dwight multiple times.

As someone who has never worked in a true office setting I'm dreading getting my first office job after I get my degree done. Open offices are the devils work.

I've seen them work well in more creative, collaboration driven environments, but putting a bunch of electrical and mechanical engineers in the same room as just torpedoed efficiency. We are most efficient when all of us put on noise cancelling headphones and block everyone else out...so what's the point?

Everyone knows the rule as long as one of your monitors looks like work you're good. Got TKP on one monitor. My Outlook and IDE sharing one monitor. Laptop is streaming The Open. Happy Friday.
