Uh, I get that it's from the song, but that's an awkward title.

Don't you know that today's journalism is all about attention-grabbing headlines for clicks???

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

I didnt even get that part.

Not sure why it's awkward, but to each his own.

You're not?

At the risk of getting too political, what America do you live in these days?

Not awkward if it's true

On second thought. I'm going to let this end here.

Seeing as the song is overtly, and I mean OVERTLY, political, it's in pretty poor taste to drop it here as a topic title.

It was the first song that came to mind when I read the original article heading LOL.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Speaking of "song," is it really a song if they just talk through it instead of sing or rap? Seems that is what hip hop has devolved into these days. I listened to maybe one minute of it and as with many others that they just talk, it is unbearable to listen to IMO.

I'm more worried about that gif haha. Is it a Michael Jackson on crack look he's going for?

But congrats to Terrell. Awesome to see that family signing these deals.

I'm not going to get too into it, because this isn't the community to really discuss it. But if you're curious I'd recommend you look into some analysis of the music video (This Is America by Childish Gambino). The dances and facial expressions are all very intentional and have meaning.

I don't love the song but the video is amazing.

Absolutely happy for a Hokie to get paid in the league and wish him years of success.

Could really give a shit about the title. A black man got paid and I am happy for that man.

Also a good point.... But maybe if they owned it they could fix some of the problems.

You mean Danvegas? :) Danville was never an exciting place, but it just looks abandoned now.

yep, Danvegas too!

I grew up there and still have family there, so on occasion, I have to go back...sigh!

"Take care of the little things and the big things will come."

Hey! Me too!! We are actually going there next week to drop our dog off at my parents' house while we go to the beach. Then during football season we go down to drop our daughter and the dog off while we go to the games.

Did you go to GW? When did you graduate?

I went from growing up in Danville (Danvegas) to college in Farmvegas.

Tunstall Grad here...i always wanted to play GW when I was there(graduated in 99) and now almost 20 years later, they are playing in the Jamboree.

You were there with my cousin/best friend. I graduated from GW in 99... Didn't GW play Tunstall in the regular season in the last couple of years? I know they never played when we were there.
But I will say this of the 3 county schools (not counting Gretna bc they are so far at the end of the county), I pulled for Tunstall overall but did pull for DR when they went to State...

They have..from what I heard. GW is not as large as it was back in 99 so they have been playing some of the smaller area schools. I remember how I kept asking to play them when I was there. I knew we couldn't compete with them in Basketball.

Is "Lancer" for Laurel Park?

No. Lancer=Longwood College (University). Grew up in Danville---all 13 years of school were in Danville Public Schools: Johnson, Taylor, Bonner, and GW. Then I graduated from Longwood twice.

Great news for Terrell and the Edmunds family, that's big time money.
And sheesh, ya'll gotta stop being so sensitive if that title offends you.

I don't know that anyone was offended. It was just a weird way to say "Terrell Edmunds signs 4 year, $10.8M contract."

I didn't understand the reference. I'm 25 (meaning I probably should understand) so I'm assuming I'm not the only one who didn't get it. I'd imagine there are a lot of people who read the title and thought "That's an oddly racial way of saying Terrell Edmunds signed a deal with the Steelers."

Not sure it's racial, he's black, he got a good contract from a successful team, thus the phrase usage. Essentially I used a portion of a song to relay my excitement for him. If I offended some people or made some people feel awkward then I feel like the title was taken literally. I wasn't relaying the political statement of the song (I know we don't talk politics per the community guidelines), as much as I was saying a phrase that's used humorously in the circles that I'm apart of in my "ethnic community." I would've hoped that with everyone knowing the community guidelines, they would've read this in jest. I believe I made it quite clear what the post was about in my opening statement:

Terrell Edmunds reportedly signed a rookie contract. I'm so happy for the Edmundi, love seeing alumni do big things in the NFL.

If the phrase offends some ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ can't please em all.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

I understand what you're getting at 2_Hokie_5, but as Alum07 posted about demographics of the alumni..most of the people here are not part of OUR ethnic community, so anything that points to race (even if in jest) will be frowned upon..

I appreciate the additional context. I honestly didn't know what the title was in reference to (I guess I'm showing my age here). When I initially read it, I was like:

Anytime Joe, just trying to please the masses.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

The reference could have been made just as effectively with "Get Yo Money, Terrell!" and using the same gif

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

....But it's not the lyric of the song...

It's entirely possible to make an allusion or reference to the song that isn't a direct quote. The partial line (and yes "get yo money" are indeed lyrics to the song) plus the gif are plenty to establish that context without requiring the full lyric.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

It's entirely possible to paraphrase it in multiple ways but it's not the entire lyric. And he (presumably OP is a "he") chose to.

"Why gobble gobble chumps asks such good questions, I will never know." - TheFifthFuller

"I am whatever you say I am" anagrams to "A Hearsay Movie, Wait, Yum!"

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

Just want to point out that I used the term racial, rather than racist, intentionally. I don't think there's anything racist or offensive about it. But it is undeniably racial.

Doesn't seem offensive, just awkward af to bring up somebody's race out of nowhere.

This is the kind of title that can attract a lot of negative attention and be very easily misunderstood.

I mean given that VT is the least diverse school in the ACC (factual statement based on information given to alumni chapters last year by the school itself) tending heavily toward upper middle class Caucasians, probably not the best look, regardless of intent.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

There is something I had never heard...interesting.

Amateur superstar and idiot extraordinaire.

I like to call this the NOVA effect.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Nobody ever said NOVA wasn't diverse. It's the contention of the previous poster that the attendees of VT who originate from NOVA share a relatively homogeneous ethic background.

That would be quite the anecdotal inaccurate take given the evidence.

From what I was relayed, the rationality given for the lack of diversity was an influx of the upper middle class Caucasians from primarily the NOVA region....

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

If there is some disproportionate amount of Caucasians from NOVa going to VT then that is an issue. But I doubt that is the case. I'm sure that the population from NOVa -> VT is at least roughly a sample size of the area. That area being more diverse than the other areas, as shown.

It's more likely that since caucasians are the majority from the more populated area, even if it brings in more diversity percentage wise than its counterparts, it would still also bring in more caucasians and maybe get a bad wrap anecdotally.

I mean, its what University Relations was telling us in an event in Blacksburg last year, so I mean I don't know what you want me to say.

If there is some disproportionate amount of Caucasians from NOVa going to VT then that is an issue

I think there is a disproportionate amount of Caucasians represented at most colleges. Here is a 137 page "chapter" I found on Georgetown's website discussing the cycle of socio-economic inequality and access to post-secondary education. Summary: the low rates of minority admissions to colleges in the past combined with costs and selectivity of colleges today have created a hill that is too steep for more and more minorities to climb, leading to disproportionately lower rates of admission and accelerating the cycle in the future.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

I am not disputing that. My point was made poorly, I meant disproportionate by even the current unfair standards for minorities. I only responded because I'm tired of NOVa getting a bad wrap for things that are untrue. It's more diverse than other parts of the state and would just make sense that it would send the same roughly diverse numbers to Tech (minus the minorities left behind due to this cycle).

I don't have any data to back it up, but i contest this is probably the Richmond, SWVA, and NJ effect more than NOVA. All ethnic folks (such as myself) were mainly from NOVA.

Have no issue with title whatsoever (or gif selection). Able to read as written sans any other meaning: Young black man gets contract with NFL. That's great already for anyone no matter what ethnicity. The fact that this particular black man is also a Hokie is icing on the cake.

Not to be unduly harsh to the OP, as I'm sure they meant well, but the problem that we end up focusing on the title instead of the news. That can't possibly be the intent.

I also didn't understand the reference, so it's just a distraction from the news item, which is what I assume this thread is actually about.

For me, it's right up there with some other notable titles of late which distract from the news they want to promote (I'm specifically referencing the Fuente trolling title that sort of cast a shadow over the ACC media days announcement for that thread.)

I'm not trying to change people's minds here, but would like to voice another perspective:

It's only a distraction if it's given meaning by the reader beyond what's written. Everything in the title is factual and neither hyperbolic nor incendiary. I personally have no problem with someone saying " get yo' money Black/Latino/Polynesian/Asian/White/etc man" in any context that is not derogatory, discriminatory or racist. The OP clearly states his elation for Edmunds' success so contextually it is none of those. So I disagree that it is anything like the "Fuente trolling" title.

My only suggestion to the title would simply be to add his name so that we know who it is: "Get yo' money black man" Edmunds 4 years 10.8M

While I personally don't have an issue with the gif. It is from a highly evocative video and can see why others may feel uncomfortable with it. But using that particular gif is interesting and I wonder if intentional by 2_Hokie_5. If so, given what it is visualizing and the title he used, then very clever.

Given community guidelines I will leave it there without further one more comment.

I see your point fernley...The gif may have been just portraying him dancing because he's happy without the extra meaning.

I posted a image of Jesus in another thread and it was meme Called "Blue collar Jesus" and someone was offended as making fun of Jesus. In order to avoid conflict, I deleted the post. That was not my intention to offend anyone as it was just to make a joke and this board is lighthearted for the most part.

To the OP, with as polarized as the country is these days it's probably best(on this board) to stay away from calling attention to race, even if it's in jest.

totally agree with what your saying in first statement. Also respect that you pulled your comment on other thread, though I felt unnecessary.

your last comment I disagree with. I will use a personal context to illustrate my point. My daughter is half-Chinese, half-American (my side which is in turn Euro-Mutt) and I want her to value her diversity and feel proud of her heritage. not being able to do so for whatever reason is unacceptable to me. That includes any tension felt or perceived by others collectively or personally.

Joe sets the rules for TKP, not me, so ultimately it's his decision but I see no fault in anyone celebrating the accomplishment of themselves or others positively.

Fernley, believe me, i get what you're saying about this..but i'm talking about staying away from race on this board. Not necessarily in life in general. You have to "know where you are" and "know your audience", if that makes sense.

No worries, I understand what you mean. +1
appreciate the comments

Thanks for seeing the gif usage meaning Highlander. I disagree though with what you're saying at the end. Let me preface, I'm not getting political with this at all, but I think our country IS polarizing, because every movement and action is seen as a political statement, and because of it the tolerance of different views, is at an all time low. I feel as a black man I should be able to celebrate the success of a fellow black man, and I should be able to point it out however I want. Nothing you do in life will go without offending SOMEONE. I believe I was clear and concise about what I was happy about. There are links that I don't click on, because I'm not interested in it, or I don't feel the need to read about, such as "Summer Fishing Report," (no offense French, just not the fishing type). Everyone in this forum has the opportunity to avoid a post just as much as I do if they are offended by the title of it. As I've stated before, this is a phrase I would say in my inner circle. In a way I see my Hokie alums as just that. I'm quickly having second thoughts though about being myself in this environment. I try to always respect the boundaries of others on this site (check my post history), I would hope those familiar with my approach would've seen that before drawing conclusions. No love lost, as always, Go Hokies.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Leg for you! I fully agree with you. Everyone has the choice of clicking or not clicking on a post. Never second guess being yourself.

2 time Longwood grad married to a Hokie.

I don't doubt in the least you meant nothing offensive. I personally am not offended. My problem is with the actual context of the song/vid you used being directly at odds with the forum rules on posting. So while you may not have intended it to be a political post, it could certainly swerve the topic directly into politics. I think, based on the discussion on this thread, you have managed to do the opposite of what you intended, and perhaps you could take that into account on future posts.

As I've stated before, this is a phrase I would say in my inner circle.

I'm sure there are many other things you say in you inner circle that you would not even think of saying here in this online community. The old saying "When in Rome, do as the Romans do" is not about giving up who you are, but about respecting the community you are visiting in the interest of comity.

I respectfully disagree Krak, there is respecting the community, and then there is censoring what you say. As I've stated, if this post was intended to talk about the content of the video then I would be at odds with the forum rules. If I was talking about the video directly in some way, then I would be at odds with the rules. I pulled a statement out of a song that resonates with my community for various reasons, for celebration of dance, for celebration of success, and then for political reasons. "Get yo' money black man" is not a political statement, it is a reflection of what happened, one of my fellow black brothers got a great deal and it is a success story, and the gif usage was the dance that came to mind that mirrored my excitement for him as a alum FIRST, and as a black man distant SECOND. I can't control the discussion of this post, people are going to react how they react. Honestly with all of the talk that's taken place, I think it's been useful to show that every statement, gif, expression, etc doesn't always hold a political angle. Some people will get that, some people won't. I would hope that when this post moves its way down the active discussions list, people will walk away knowing two things 1. Edmunds got a great contract, and 2. Tolerance is important. Thanks for chiming in though Krak.

Upvote all day...but take it from someone that has gotten into multiple arguments on Tech message boards about mentioning race...i see this thread taking a turn for the worse...

Fernley I read this AFTER I typed my response, appreciate you explaining it for some of the other readers in this topic. I honestly had no intention of writing a incendiary post, it was honestly said in a manner that I would say to one of my boys'. Per your request and insightful suggestion, I'll add Edmunds to appease the crowd (not that I should have to, but of my own choice). The gif usage was the yet again the dance that came to mind of excitement for Edmunds. I'm sure if I knew him and said this statement he'd laugh it off, because we are both of the same community. He wouldn't take it as I'm making a political statement. It's like if I used a Beatles gif, and said "Let it be" as an intro to a topic about how we can't control the outcome of Hokie games, people wouldn't get up in arms about my protest of the Vietnam war/violence in Ireland. Just my take.

"the problem that we end up focusing on the title instead of the news."

Why is everyone focusing on the title, though? I saw the title and saw the quotation marks, so I knew it was quote from something, I just didn't know from what. I thought, "What's this about", opened the thread, saw the gif, realized where the quote was from, and saw the link to the article and all of the context involved. Thought the post might get into an interesting discussion of published contract money versus guaranteed money or how a former player publicly signing a multimillion dollar contract may help recruiting. Boy was I wrong.

At no point did I think, "Oh no. This has no place on TKP. That title should be reworded." People talk/type differently and use different slang, phrases, and colloquialisms. Nothing offensive was said. TKP should value diversity in the language that posters use, not shut it down.

I trust this community to not necessarily post click-bait or misleading title topics. There have been obvious exceptions to this, but in general I look for context and usually find it without issue.

thank you! TKP is a diverse place. we get lots of great input from lots of different backgrounds, races, education levels, places of the country, etc. instead of dissecting ones grammar, punctuation, wordings, lets look at the content of what they are saying and enjoy the actual thing they are bringing to the table. If things are so bad that they are unreadable and you cant make it out. ask for clarity instead of throwing rocks from inside the glass house. What happens when you do this is you turn a guy off from posting because in a community where you feel like you are amongst friends and like minded people your are being embarrassed or chastised for not being perfect.

Offensive or not, the title used is not necessary and is distracting. The proof is in the conversation here. I had to look up the reference, and all I can say is WTF.

I'm happy for Edmunds. This is why you get early exits for the draft. I'm really excited to see both brothers grow into their maximum potential in the NFL.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

So lemme get this straight, VTC, you're saying that I can only use certain titles? Is this not an open forum? Even though it wasn't my intent (as explained above), if I put you on to a new song, then that's a win win for me. As stated above, I literally am using a phrase that's used in my community to relay a success story. If you find that unnecessary and distracting, sorry bout ya.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Actually the community guidelines address this:

Provide a clear, sensible and descriptive title for your post.

Again, not a big deal to me. My only point is that you posted a very relevant piece of news that has been secondary to the chosen title. I would say that is proof that the title is not the best choice.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

It appears 2_Hokie_5 updated it to include "Edmunds". That's helpful.

For some context, the reason why the thread title is important is so TKPers can easily filter topics via the Tracker.

Will be mindful of it in the future Joe.

The only drama with the title is the conversation people are having on their own bud. The OP clearly was celebrating Terrell's success, everyone else is inferring greater meaning. The title is factual and self explanatory.

Here as well! +1

If no one else is gonna say it I will. I've been holding back on this board for a long time, but I've about had it with you people.

'Edmunds', by any grammar rule will become 'Edmundes' in the plural. Only words that end in 'us' get changed to 'i' in the plural (think 'alumnus, alumni'). It's a carry over into English from the second declension in Latin. There's only like 3 words that don't end in 'us' that become 'i'. Most other masculine nouns are third declension, which end in es in the plural.

I've said my peace. If you wanna know about why 'syllabi' and 'octupi' are also wrong, I'm happy to chat.

Also, the title is garbage.

You're not TKP'ing hard enough.

Obligatory

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Why are syllabi and octupi wrong?

Also, why do you recommend "Edmundes" instead of "Edmundses"?

The ends are instead referring to feet, thus the proper plurals of octopus and platypus are octopodes and platypodes

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

On second thought, syllabi might be right, some say it's fourth declension, but I won't get into that.

Octopus (translated as '8 legs') is actually Greek, where the pus is from the Greek πούς. Grammatically, octopi should be octopodes, but since it sounds like it comes from Latin, we decided to skirt the rules.

So really, what you're saying is that you've got a problem with the English language, not us per se.

And your use of "peace" is certainly up there with the worst of the English language butchery.

Edit: unless, of course, you admit later in this thread that it was part of the gag.

Not part of the gag, I just thought the phrase used 'peace'. Similar to how until recently I thought the phrase was 'tow the line'.

While I'm not Larry Fedora, and I don't think trying to minimize the effects of CTE on people who play football correlates to the downfall of our country, seeing an old highlight like this where the blocker would ABSOLUTELY have been ejected for targeting does in some respects take away from the highlight.

Haha, I wont pretend that was a typo, I thought the phrase used "peace"! Of course we're all goofin, so am I.

As an old white guy, I would have never posted that title, but not because of some pop reference I lack knowledge of, just because it would make me uncomfortable. I went to VT like all/most of you did, and I know the diversity was limited, and so I think its always helpful to add various cultures to make a message board like this "robust" (best word I could come up with, well rounded probably fits better). That was truly my initial intent. I try to be methodical about when I apologize for missteps. I hate when people apologize for things that they truly aren't sorry for, or when their forced to apologize for things because someone was offended. I believe an apology is most useful when it's authentic. And I don't say this to be prideful, but I honestly am not apologetic for posting this thread the way I originally did, I truly believe its important to be yourself regardless of what community/environment you find yourself in. I think the worst censorship is self censorship. Disclaimer: I am fully aware that no one asked me to apologize, but I think apologies come too fast at times when people rather diffuse a situation rather than give an authentic apology.

If only I added the /S. thanks for answering the quuestion though.

Speaking of titles....

From ESPN: Ohio State's Hooker banned 1 game for DUI

Glad to see the athletic department holding the recruiting staff to a high standard of conduct....

Are you blaming the support staff?

VHokie

if youre going to ban one hooker for being drunk on the job shouldn't you ban them all? whats next drug test? shesh whats a girl gotta do to get work around those parts?

If a post with an unnecessarily controversial title requires dozens of additional posts to explain and defend the context of the title, regardless of the intention, it probably should have just had a normal title.

Controversial? (I'll take that into consideration next time when making a title... \s)

Was not familiar with the song...initially read it as "back" then dove into the comments and it took me about 5 or so minutes to realize I misread the song title. Wow.

I keep refreshing thinking that somebody who can, will simply change the title instead of arguing the merits of it.

Tell you what, post the exact same thing about a raise/hiring/promotion on your corporate message board or email and see what happens....Also, companies who sponsor people, websites, etc, have pulled their support for much less.

HB, if the mods wanna change it go ahead. I doubt they'd want to silence a voice on this site though. And just because the world around us is sensitive to the slightest things, because of a lack of knowledge of various pop culture norms and cultures as a whole, is a testament to the work that needs to be done to understand the diverse world around us. Nothing about this is racial, especially coming from a black man. Nothing about this is political either. My company actually has a African American engineer chapter, so I'm thankful that within my company I can be myself, I'd hope I could be the same on this site. Thanks for your input sir.

Thread title could have simply been:

Terrell Edmunds signs 4 YEARS 10.8M contract

and people would have understood what the thread was about originally.

I'm not offended by the the title, and I don't think it's in poor taste, but at first glance, it gives you that feel of poor taste.

What's
Important
Now

If I changed it to that VTFG, it wouldn't be me, it wouldn't be the excitement I was trying to get across at first when I made the poste. I hope you can at least see that. I've changed it enough to get the point across in my opinion. I know you're not asking me to change it anymore, but changing it at this point would be giving into the masses and silencing the flavor I think I add to this site. I don't think I should feel the need to give in to that pressure. I appreciate your insight though.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

I'm all for free speech, but now I am also for "free flavor". May your flavor prosper on this site and beyond.

Pumped for Edmundi!

Exactly. 2_Hokie_5, you do you, man. The board will be better off for it.

To anyone that thinks that the use of that particular gif is crossing the line into politics, since when does the entire context of the source of the gif get brought up? It is just a gif that expressed 2_Hokie_5's elation at the good news in the link. When people post the gif of the dude throwing his shoes at George W. Bush, do we go off on how it is political? When someone posts the gif of Gary Oldman saying "EVERYONE!!!" in the movie The Professional, do we go on about how he is trying to kill a hitman and 12 year old girl to cover up his corruption as a member of law enforcement and somehow try to apply that to real life? Of course not. That would be ridiculous.

"Nope, launch him into the sun and fart on him on the way up"
-gobble gobble chumps

"11-0, bro"
-Hunter Carpenter (probably)

I don't think people had an issue with the gif, people had an issue of how it looked for the school that has a (self-admitted) reputation of being very white has "get your money black man" as a main headline on one of its most popular fan forums. Even now knowing the OP isn't of that demographic, the optics of seeing that made some uneasy.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Alum, a close friend of mine always says, "...those who feel uneasy, are the ones who need to confront some particular topic the most." I'll leave that open ended, because I want to keep it clear of ANY assumptions on my part of what that topic might be. That's a generalized phrase that can be applied to several various topics. I say that to say that people who admit that VT:

"...has a (self-admitted) reputation of being very white..."

should embrace the diversity of this board even more so. This forum is an opportunity to share a space with individuals all across the continental US who share one commonality, we are all Hokies, regardless of race, nationality, religion, or creed. I don't say this to be prideful, but I surely embrace that diversity, which is why some of the most interesting topics are the ones that directly/indirectly display ones' upbringing/background when applied to a simple topic like: who the starting QB should be for the team. Diversity in this space is more apparent than we realize when we argue a stance on something so simple. Our views on entitlement, discipline, work ethic, etc are diverse, and the dialogue that ensues reflect our demographic/personal views as well. I hope to continue to share my upbringing and views through vague mediums such as "...the RB rotation" for years to come. And it is my hope that no ones voice will ever be stifled just because a select few feel "uneasy" or the optics are bad. If you feel uneasy, to something that is clearly intended to be done in jest, and clearly absent and void of any community guideline infraction, then click on another link, and continue to share your voice, because I can guarantee that I would love to hear your diverse views. Thanks for chiming in Alum, we always seem to chat cordially here, glad that the habit has continued.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Absolutely get what you're saying, and I don't disagree at all.

But for a forum that has a very explicit 'no politics' policy, the initial gut reaction when seeing the headline was "yeah, this probably doesn't belong". There have been other discussions shut down that probably didn't even get this far because of the nature of the subject at hand, but it is very nice and refreshing to see the topic actually discussed without the hyperbole that tends to occur. But, this kind of headline just opens the door for everything to be taken way out of context by a casual onlooker, especially given VT's rep. Its not that the goal is to necessarily stifle any voices (except for Bender, socalbuck and Starscream... those guys were douchebags) its that in its own way, posting on here is posting on behalf of the VT community, which does have a reputation for being more than a little, as they say, waspy. And given what happened with the VT lacrosse team earlier this year, I get why there was pushback from the community on the gut reaction to the headline.

For the record, the music video is great, and the song was (and is again... thanks) stuck in my head for a while after the first few times I watched it. Not sure there is anything that Donald Glover has done that I don't like.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Alum, not asking this to be combative, want my tone to be clear, but from the headline you got that this was taking a political tone when you first read the headline?...

I'd be curious to know what political angle you thought this was taking? And as I said, I'm not trying to catch you up, or hit you with a "gotcha" moment, or that I'm even angry. Just trying to objectively look at my headline through your lens is all. I appreciate the feedback in advance.

Side note: I do find it hilarious that you name dropped certain douchebags on the site LOL, I certainly wouldn't have done it.

I do think the VT lacrosse team is a lot different scenario though, saying the "N" word, and saying black man is two completely different things. But I get where you were going with that, I think.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

from the headline you got that this was taking a political tone when you first read the headline?

No need to apologize for asking, its a completely valid question to ask. I'll have to tread very lightly here, to not overstep the CGs, but, at least in my opinion, and the opinion of many others, race, and the discussion and treatment of race by (especially by said people in the wasp demographic) has long been a political football.

I'd be curious to know what political angle you thought this was taking?

Personally, I've had my share of run ins with the ugly, bigoted side of the waspy demographic that I personally belong to both here at home and up at Tech. Seeing someone referred to by their race rather than their name has those similar undertones, especially on an anonymous forum of a community known for its lack of diversity (when I saw Chappelle when I was at Tech, one of his first jokes was "why do they call it Blacksburg when there are no black people") made me personally pause a little bit just because I've seen that before in the ways you weren't intending. And agreed about the VT lacrosse, it isn't the same thing (though I have seen "black man" used by individuals in public when you could tell they wish they could have used the other), but it does show VT does have its fair share of racial issues, which is why some would rather use extreme caution in those situations.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Obligatory deviation from Thread in order to keep it "light" - Those Wasps will get after ya...

Enlightening. I'm a little pissed that I didn't get to see Chappelle live, when did he come to campus? That was like a dream to see pre-roided out Chappelle live.

Anywho, it's funny you say that "black man" can be used negatively. I'm trying to adhere to the CG myself, but I honestly prefer to be called a black man, and to hear that others feel it could harbor some type of negative connotation might actually shed light on why some people thought this carried a political angle. I'll briefly say that I prefer black man over African American, because I never been to Africa LOL, although I'd love to. I feel like Latin Americans or Asian Americans can use those terms, if they are 1-2 generations removed from the country of origin mentioned. Yet even then I feel it's pushing it, if you weren't originally born there then your American, your color can be used as a description if necessary (just my personal non-political, non-social opinion)(Don't put me in the box J. Lanza). So for me, saying black man in my headline, was endearing, it was like "hell yeah man, beat the odds of making it to the NFL, beat the odds of not being a 5 star recruit, beat the odds of being a black millionaire out of college (check the stats), beat the odds of playing at a non-blue blood/SEC school and get that paper, that's sup"

So I'll keep this CG compliant and say thanks for the input, it was non-combative and well thought out, and with some of the defense that I've had to play over the last 24 hours, it's refreshing to not have to defend myself/post heading. It's always helpful to get a different take minus the hostility and soapbox approach. I'm not brave enough to mention names like you, rather keep a clean persona here. Cheers!

Hah, those few are fair game, having made their bed by being enough of a well documented dbag to each get themselves perma-banned either by the LanzHammer or the community at large.

It's the title. Not yourself (from my perspective).

Good call, editing.

when I saw Chappelle when I was at Tech, one of his first jokes was "why do they call it Blacksburg when there are no black people"

Chris Rock had the exact same joke when he performed at VT in 1996 (or '97, can't remember exactly). Chappelle steals jokes!

Thanks CB4VT, the gif analyzing was really what through me for a loop seeing as we use gifs so freely around here. I know we like to make a post go off the rails by analyzing granular things, but yeesh! +1 for you/

Hmm.

So happy for Terrell!

This is an unnecessary and dumb title. I got the reference before I clicked and it's still dumb.

Clearly not long enough. LOL

I said above that this thread has been interesting, but may I add that it has also been informative? So much of this site is pretty impersonal, folks zinging zingers and quipping quips, and those so inclined, digging out new, pertinent and yes, some overused gifs, but this thread has been unusually real, and about so much more about us as people than the fact that the Edmundses got paid. I commend all concerned, all who opened up, and appreciate you putting in a lot of time to further the discourse, 2_Hokie_5. And you should know, you're welcome in the fishing thread any ole time, love to have you.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Appreciate it IFVTIA, I've enjoyed it myself, even the ones who seemed to try to get me to change the headline. Love hearing outside thoughts like Alum's and others to kind of get me to think outside the box. I'll think about that fishing thread, but I very well might cause the thread to slide off the rails as well over there. LOL

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ #YNWA

Come to think of it....How is the fishing thread of a predominately football message board community not called "Thinking Outside the (Tackle) Box?"

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

This entire thread makes me lol. Some people be getting torn over nothing

2_Hokie_5, I avoided this thread for a couple days after shooting out an ill-conceived jab, but I gotta say, coming back and seeing you calmly explain your thinking, offer context behind your choices, accept other people's uneasiness/awkwardness, and keep your conviction that what you wrote is appropriate makes me really happy. The internet's a weird place, but at least (most) of us can still be civil here.

Appreciate that Mog, was slighted frustrated with the whole ordeal yesterday, so to come back to this, this morning is reassurance that I'm in a place where we're Hokies FIRST and foremost, and our diversity comes second; and the diversity is what makes this that much more enjoyable of an "internet pub." Cheers!

Yup, so 'Rell is basically a first-ballot HOFer now, right??

No, it just means he's...

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

I think he's going to crush expectations. Most Steelers fans are almost rooting for him to fail because he was "such a reach" and is a "third-down talent that Tomlin did a favor for." I think he's a starter in that D by season's end and finishes with at least 5 picks

Wow, 5 picks for a rookie that will likely be in the bench for a good bit of the season?

Hat tip for the bold prediction.

I think you meant to say...

And while he likely won't start right away, he'll get a ton of 2nd and 3rd down work in sub packages primarily bc the Steelers don't have the inside LB talent right now. He'll play often, and have a chance to make an impact and I just have a feeling that he'll make the most of it.

The amount of "Steelers fans" mad at his draft pick is nauseating, along with their love affair over Mason Rudolph. I just don't understand their ilk.

I think they are mad Ray Ray is going to the Hall this week. Go Ravens!

TKPhi Damn Proud

Nah, even as a Steelers fan I know Ray deserves the HoF. Those were the best years of the rivalry. I really miss having someone on that team to hate.

You can join all Ravens fans in hating Joe Flacco. Although I am hopeful our draft and some wide receiver additions will light a little fire under his ass this year. Seems like he has been putting more time and effort into the team this offseason and I'm hoping it will translate to the field.

He was elite for that playoff run and SB... not so much after he signed that elite contract.

"Yes I am going to have favorites. My favorites are high production and low maintenance players, coaches, and staff." - JMFF

I think this is one thing that has stuck from the Beamer and now Fuente era. I know everytime we've been to an away or neutral site game the entire team has gone around the stadium and gives dap to traveling fans.

Yeah I honestly don't remember when this started, but I go to just about every game and for the last few years, when the clock is ticking down under the final minute, I grab whatever friends that are with me and start heading down to the first row to make sure we get a good spot for high fives. Definitely a fun tradition.

Rell gets some love as the Steelers' "X-Factor" on The Ringer

A snippet from the above article with an interesting note about his potential role in the defense this year:

The speedy former Hokie could make a difference at linebacker, too; he got snaps there during OTAs, and it's a spot where Edmunds's range could be put to good use.
