KNOCK IT DOWN, BUD!

Let's hug sack Tom Savage 8 times here.

That Bud Foster will really get after ya

"Now Miami wants to talk about it." *Cue Enter Sandman*

this is awesome! If our offense can be half as good as our defense, this would be a tough team to beat.

If our offense was as good as our D, we'd be in the national championship discussion...

Let's Go...

I think it is safe to say, there a few, if any teams, that will put more than 14-17 points on this team. That is about all you can ask for. They are literally averaging 12 points per game...the offense will be growing and getting healthy during the bye week...hopefully they can start putting more together.

Anyone have sufficient skills to Photoshop Tom Savage's head in place of the ball?

"Exit light..."

"No, absolutely not."

i loled at that

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

our d is so damn good. i hate that this game was as close as it was. i should get used to the fact our offense isnt going to light it up. it really felt closer to me than it really was. it sucks we still cant get a run game going. but were 6-1 ill take it

tyrod did it mikey! tyrod did it!

I thought after the UNC game that the offense would really be coming into their own. I'm not sure I would go as far to say that they took a step back, as Pitt's defense is respectable and we know they brought their A-game and we still 'dominated'. I think the offense is doing just about average. Hopefully the o-line can get healthy and back to form by the miami game.

If we had type of running game the offense would be just fine.

Bob: What would ya say ya do here?

Brad: I already told you! I iron out the minutiae so Justin doesn't have to. I have people skills dammit! What the hell is wrong with you people?

I think we still need alot of help with the running game. The passing game has come into its own, but we still have trouble running the ball.

Agreed. From everything we've seen, I doubt our guys will take anyone lightly. Hopefully we'll come out firing on all cylinders against Duke and be healthy enough to beat BC. After that, it's the big one, but one week at a time.

Safe to say if you post this every week after we win, you're gonna have a good time.

True. I especially enjoyed it this week since we are the only team in the ACC with that lovely little asterisk. Last year, we didn't get that until the very last week, so it's very sweet this year.

"Exit light..."

I'm new here, so I'm not too sure. What does the asterisk mean?

VT 2016
Go Hokies

It means you won 6 games and you're bowl eligible.

I've been around awhile and I had to think about it for a minute before I got it.

The offense has been doing "just enough" to win ball games, and this is the way Loeffler's been playing it. Realize, this is the 3rd game in a row they've scored enough points in the first quarter to win the game, and have just relied on the defense from there. "Small-ball", as one Pitt poster called it, has worked so far. I call it a conservative, ball-control offense, which is a great compliment to this "light's out" defense.
Dadi Nicolas at whip, BRILLIANT!

"It's a Hokie takeover of The Hill ... in Charlottesville!" -Bill Roth

This is so right. Allows Loeffler to get work in on the plays he wants and/or put film down that will lead opponents away from what he plans to do to them the next week. Mad scientist.

Now I'm not suggesting that Loeffler is tinkering during the game or holding back, but when we have the lead, he's instructing Logan that if the downfield threat is covered, throw it underneath or throw it away. You'll see Logan make some good downfield throws, but most of them are in the first half. After that, dink and dunk, take a an occasional shot deep where only your receiver can make a play, and protect the ball. Until some other offense puts up early points on us, this will continue to be Loeffler's strategy. And who can disagree with 6 and 1 right now!?

"It's a Hokie takeover of The Hill ... in Charlottesville!" -Bill Roth

very interesting theory and i hope this is right. I don't like it--but the facts are there. But this is a rebuilding year for offense, so it makes sense. I wonder if we will see a complete game of Loeffler's offense, to see how potent it is.

Yes, I'm sure Loeffler's plan is to drive the ball down to the red-zone and then kick field goals. That's an incredible strategy. Also that 1:00 long ball control drive in the 4th quarter was a masterpiece.

Tech Tech VPI

He isn't saying Loeffler was intentionally calling 3 and outs--simply that once the game was in hand, he would start to call conservative calls, that allowed for yardage but also allows him to practice some plays and see what is working and what is not. I can't say I like this or fully believe it...but it would make sense that in a rebuilding year, once you know the game is in hand, to start working on some things.

Loeffler was definitely calling it safe starting about halfway through the third. Very few throws down the field unless on third down.

Does no one realize sarcasm when they see it?

for real...shouldn't be downvoted for it.

BeamerBall.

Actually, I rather thought it was.
We had the ball at midfield. An easy punt from there to try and pin it into the 5. Make them move 95 yards.
PITT had 3 timeouts left. Run the ball 3 times and make them use all their TO.
Maybe we get a 1st. If not, they get a really long field and no timeouts and need 2 TDs to win.
With a defense leading the country in INT? Not likely.

It wasn't pretty but, they were playing for the win.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

.

Tech Tech VPI

Well, we moved the ball pretty darn well for the vast majority of the game. There were very few 3-and-outs. And yes, once in the red zone, if we got into 3rd-and-long situations, Beamer/Lefty were more than content to center the ball and set up easy field goals for Journell. They knew darn well there was no way in Hell that Pitt would score more than 1 or 2 Tds in the game. This was an old-school, Beamerball win.

I would also add the fact that we held the ball for something like 12:00 in the 3rd quarter was huge. We may have only managed field goals, but when your opponent isn't on the field, they can't score.

"Exit light..."

The offense seems to be good for about 10-15 minutes in a game and an erratic hot mess for the other 45 minutes. The defense is ridiculously good.

What the...? you sick..!

Oh, wait... you said errAtic.

That makes a lot more sense.

The defense is erotic. The offense is most definitely not erotic.

I'll take that, and improvement in the return game.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

teach KJ to wave his hands in the air and knowles to bend down (i know its hard) but put his knee in the grass. At this point, I don't see what else they can do unless KJ has a revelation that he should run straight forward and get 5-7 yards and maybe a lane to run more in, than sideways for 20 yards and a gain from -5 to 5 yards.

Always a bad sign when fair catches are the best option for every punt return

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

I agree...this team, in my opinion, is powerful...if they return they should be north south. We don't have a shifty guy back there like D. Hall.

Kyshoen is shifty but he's indecisive.

Well statistically, starting from your 20 or your 25 isn't going to have a huge impact on the probability of you scoring on that drive.

All KJ has to do is be right once to have a big play. Punt returns are a great opportunity to change field position/score so why not go for the home run every time?

Gotta concentrate on catching the ball before looking upstream. Too many drops, one of these is going to be more difficult to pick right back up, than the rest.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I agree, I'm mostly worried about ball security. He needs to take fair catches instead of getting leveled as soon as he catches it.

There's always a lighthouse. There's always a man. There's always a city.

Off topic. Anyone watching klempsun game? The may be Clemsoning it?

Bob: What would ya say ya do here?

Brad: I already told you! I iron out the minutiae so Justin doesn't have to. I have people skills dammit! What the hell is wrong with you people?

BC is certainly giving them all they can handle up to this point. We'd better watch ourselves when we play them. Looks like they can hang with the big boys.

"Exit light..."

Yup. Gave both Clemson and FSU fits.

This plus a million. I hate BC because they always seem to play us tough, even though they should just lay down sometimes. They aren't doing that this year. And they're both putting up points and preventing points against the best teams the conference has to offer. They've lost at USCw, at Clemson, and vs FSU. No shame in that, for the most part. Their best win is probably Army, and they allow points to everyone (Villanova put 14 on them and Wake got 10), but they're better than their record indicates and will be really problematic for us. They always get up for us and we're going up to Chestnut Hill this year.

Considering the VT offense is only averaging 14 pts away from Lane Stadium, it's going to be a nail-bitter. This is for sure.

🦃 🦃 🦃

I think there are a lot of Pitt fans out there very upset with KJ not drawing a targeting call on Street before the last touchdown. Here's the ACC highlight video of it:

http://www.theacc.com/#!/video-detail/1zNDJyZjoS0yWwxXOaFszoJjttRUE3-d

After watching this a few times from all the angles, I change my stance from "I hope the ACC doesn't suspend him" to "it would be a damn travesty if they suspend him." Initially, I thought KJ left his feet, which would put him in danger. He didn't; he was just running full-tilt. He led with the shoulder and initiated contact with the shoulder.

He did not initiate contact with the crown of his helmet. He did not make contact with the head or neck. I would also hardly call a receiver who has possession of the ball and is running downfield "defenseless."

It looked like Street was badly shaken up on the play, and I certainly hope he was not injured. To me, though, this is just a hard hit from a tough defender.

"Exit light..."

I agree.

IMO you aren't allowed to take 3 or more steps with the football and still be called a "defenseless player". If the WR didn't want to risk the hit, he should have gone to the ground instead of continuing up the field.

By posting the video as a "must see play" on the official ACC site, are they not celebrating the hit as good, wholesome football entertainment?

Wouldn't the conference look foolish by putting this video on its site, getting hits and collecting ad revenue and then turning around and suspending the player for a game who made the "must see play"?

I hope the ACC wouldn't make such an egregious move.

It's a clean hit.

I agree on all counts.

"Exit light..."

Future VT DB recruits will love that video. Clean hit but brutal.

You are assuming that the ACC is a logical entity here

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

I agree, but I also think they shouldn't glorify the big hit, especially when the recipient gets hurt. Not a good call in my book. You're right that it's a clean hit, but there has to be a bunch of other plays they could highlight instead.

I think they also are highlighting that you can get the, bone jarring knock the ball loses hit, without having the helmet as a weapon.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

yup, shoulder to shoulder, i said that when it happened. the pitt homer announcer was complaining about it, but i think it was just the violence of the hit that that made it look like targeting.

"That kid you're talking to right there, I think he played his nuts off! And you can quote me on that shit!" -Bud Foster

Did they rule that the fumble was caused by the ground? I saw the hit and then had to entertain the kids and thought for sure either we had the ball or it was incomplete. Then I turned around and they scored. Needless to say I was pissed.

In my eyes, it was definitely complete. Street did a hell of a job hanging onto the ball. I posted in the other forum the screen grab of him rolling over the ball before it came out. Complete, ground forced fumble. I have no issue with the call.

"Exit light..."

I agree with this wholeheartedly. I originally thought it should have been ruled a fumble because the homer in me wanted to believe the ball was jarred loose at contact. Then I saw your post showing the picture of him holding the ball and rolling over it on the ground. He obviously maintained possession to the ground. Good call by the refs.

Onward and upward

Thanks, I only saw the play in real time and just assumed. Haven't gotten through all the posts yet...damn Mondays...

Whip-Dadi.

Dadi Whip: he's gonna open up a can on you...

"Exit light..."

Dadi pretty much had 1 job: kill Savage. It worked pretty darn well.

That's what Foster did with Tweedy near the end of the season last year. Was awesome to see it again.

By the way, Dadi might be the most fiery player out on that field every down. I remember on one play after it was over an offensive lineman put his hand on him and he smacked it down and gave him the stank eye.

+1 for stank eye

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Two things from that game I'm disappointed in, other than that I was happy. The two things are:

1) When we had the ball up 16-3 at their 5 yard line on 3rd down I want to see a throw. The run is the safe call, but a field goal doesn't end the game, it keeps it at two possessions. Go for the jugular and get the TD.

2) Why in the blue hell were people doing the wave, when we had the damn ball?! I was standing in North just yelling at everyone for being morons. There's a football game going on dumbasses!

Rip his freaking head off!

Even the commentators mentioned the wave going on. That was in the first half, wasn't it?

"Exit light..."

2nd i think. it was impressive that it made it all the way around but do it at halftime or something. we had the ball for crying out loud. people were cheering for the wave and ignoring the game

VT CEE Class of 2016/2017

5 years, 2 degrees, 33 football games as a student, and 2 Cassell court stormings later, I bleed Maroon and Orange

Yea, that drives me nuts. Do the wave when we're up 4 scores on the annual FCS team. When we're just a little bit ahead of a longtime rival (and conference foe), keep focused on what's important.

"Exit light..."

It started during a TV timeout. The trouble is, it went around the stadium twice so, it lasted a long time. I noted the cheerleaders involved.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

I'm suddenly reminded of an episode of King of the Hill

The Arlen football team is losing several games, most of which are because of the cheerleaders. Rather than preform simple, motivational cheers, they participate in dance contests and show off dancing moves to the crowd... After another loss, Peggy vows to help the coach Jo Rita get her act together. Peggy manages to get the assistant coach job and she's reduced to finding Jo Rita's purse and giving messages for her. After seeing a dance routine and the cheerleaders leaving when the team's in a very important position in the game, an enraged Peggy shouts a cheer and makees the crowd join in. Suddenly inspired, the team score a touchdown

http://kingofthehill.wikia.com/wiki/Cheer_Factor

Yeah, second quarter I think. And while the timing of the wave was suspect, I have to admit it was a sweet wave. Watching that bad boy roll through the East stands was impressive. Just wish it would've been during a TV timeout or something

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

I agree with your #1. I think, as everyone has stated, we are playing as an entire team. The new coaches are doing what they can with what they have. Logan is a leader, and Bud and the "D" are amazing. But CFB has never, and probably will never be the coach to step on the accelerator.

However, special teams are still lacking tremendously. I hope this, the fact we struggle putting up touchdowns versus field goals, and having to always waste timeouts, do not bite us down the road.

But awesome win! GO HOKIES!!

Foster should swat down the wave like he swats the Savage pass.

FOSTERS: Australian for defense

Don't forget the two paper airplanes that made it onto the field

Sorry, but I came all the way from Chicago so my 9 year old daughter could attend her first Tech game. She wants to be a Hokie and I am going to encourage it, including doing the wave! By the way, between that and Enter Sandman I believe my work is done.....

One thing not to forget: Bowl Eligible. First ACC team to become eligible this season

That was a really fun game! I saw my face on the Hokie Vision screen for the first time ever and got a picture! And the crowd around me was harassing a guy in a UVA shirt which made for some fun times.

Now celebrating at Red Robin in Christiansburg!

Nice! I barely squeezed in on Hokie Vision in the first quarter.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Nice! I got some shirtless pale glory vs Marshall on Hokie Vision.

Pitt got neutered today.

UVa might have given Tom Savage a mild concussion, but we took his spirit.

I liked the sustained drives but wanted them to finish better. Bud Foster and wrinkle in the same sentence equals sleepless nights for opposing OC's. First Kyle Fuller vs. GT, now Dadi vs. Pitt.

I loved seeing Journell drop in that long field goal but hated seeing him miss the shorter one.

Kendall Fuller might not have gotten a lot of mention up to this point, but he has been so darn good. Pitt has good receivers that could not get going and it was not just the pass rush that was standing between Savage and a reception.
