When the Hokies last played FSU in 2012, I skipped my Thursday afternoon Creative Nonfiction class in order to tailgate with my roommates. In the process, VABC agents carded me at our tailgate and I was charged with underage possession while chugging cans of Bud Light. Luckily, my roommates poured alcohol in an empty can of Diet Coke and I rallied despite the setback. On the way to Lane, I ran into one of my classmates who told me that our professor read my short story in front of the class since I wasn't there. But my story was a hit. Then the Hokies lost a tight football game (a late FSU scoring drive and an INT thrown by LT3 sealed the deal). Were mistakes made? Yes. Do I have regrets? Yeah--I regret that I didn't skip more classes and let loose more often. Skip that class, have fun and enjoy college my friend!

This seems a lot like GT. Fuente not playing to win, looks like we are playing to not loose. The last few drives have seemed timid.
FSU is going to make some adjustments and come out more aggressive in the second half. Fu and Co absolutely need to counter and get more aggressive on offense. We've really cooled off on that side of the ball. Also give Bud all the credit in the world, defense has been spectacular for the most part.

I, for one, am really happy with the first half. Great play from our secondary with some (but not all) of what mistakes were expected. We have the energy and the crowd is already getting frustrated. Their team will have to do something special to draw them back into it to help them.
Holy defense Batman. Ecstatic about theirnplay. Even if we lose the game as long as they keep the intensity the whole game I'll be happy.

First drive out of the half (our defense) is going to be absolutely huge for the tone of the rest of the game. Obviously it usually is, but I feel like this one is so much more so.

Missed an open TD to Grimsley after the fumble. The screen was rolling early but not a lot of good passes down the field. That fade to Turner worked but was not pretty (that play rarely is though). Would like to see more of those easy passes that worked early. Hazelton alligator armed one which was not on JJ. I'm not hating JJ so far just not siked yet.

another note: It looks like his hands come off the football as he is going down. That technically makes it a fumble and he would need to fully gain control before it could be a touchdown, regardless of being over the goal line. He does not maintain possession as he hits the ground and VT recovered the fumble in the endzone.

I don't think it was timid playcalling but some dropped passes and receivers not falling forward that has killed us. Jackson isn't that accurate but they gotta catch everything that hits there hands. FSU was gonna adjust to the run, we now have to adjust and continue the counters and misdirection with some go/fade balls against their small CB's

Cornelsen is poor. Offers nothing new on playcalling, has been poor for more than 70% of the games we've played in. Jackson isn't helping but the play calling has been terrible and unimaginative regardless for the past 3 years.
I think that the QB position hasn't been a plus yet in his tenure, not saying its a minus with JJ, more of a draw... Had JE stayed for a second year... interesting scenario to play through.
Of course, none of that matters looking forward. Either JJ steps up in his second year starting, or another QB on the team that presents a higher ceiling works hard and earns a shot.

VT is up 14 in the 4th over a favored and highly talented FSU team, on the road in Tallahassee, where it is stupid humid and raining on and off all game.
We had question marks all over on Defense, all of which seem to have been answered resoundingly positively.
Fuente is managing the game to get the win.
I can't complain... as a unbiased observer.
I will say... managing to get the win, with the lone exception of going for it on 4th and goal, rather than taking the likely field goal and getting a three score lead... hindsight is freaking sweet.
I feel that a non-fan observer is also going to expect a team to punch it into the end zone once out of 4 tries in the opponent's side of the field, though.
The awful play call of the game goes to lining up on 4th and 1 in a spread and then trying to power it in with your full back!
If you're gonna line up in a spread formation put the ball in your QBs hands

We came out - and scored...handily. We went up 10-0. Our confidence grew. Offense stalled and D took over along with special teams.
What did we not do? turn the ball over (even with 3 fumbles)
What did we not do? get a million offsides penalties
What did JJ not do? throw an interception.
What did Oscar do? Not allow a return.
Alll those little things added up big time - we were clearly the better prepared team, and that is because of JF and BF. FSU looked like they were showing up for dress rehearsal. Coaching matters, even more than stars. We have excellent coaches.
First time posting to a game thread in a few seasons. Some observations:
- That FSU swagger wave was cheesy. I'm glad it misfired.
- I monitored the game thread on the Tomahawk Nation blog. There were some bitter posters on there. Bitter comments directed everywhere (refs, VT in general, Willie Taggart, the offense). Wish they saw it differently.
- This win is a confidence builder, no bones about it.
- Key stat of the game #1: Average starting field position. Field position won the game tonight. Field position battle was fought perfectly by Fuente and the offensive staff. It doesn't sell tickets, but it works, particularly when your own offense is somewhat anemic (let's not kid ourselves). If FSU would have had better starting field position, it would have been a totally different game. But field position doesn't win most games, and only because this was massively in Tech's favor did it actually prove to be meaningful. Oh, and the Tech punter is fantastic.
- Key stat of the game #2: Turnover score, 5-0. Two or three of those were after the game was out of hand. Believe Tech had 3 fumbles of its own, and lucky us, none were turnovers. Side note: if you run the entire game out of the shotgun, you better have a near-100%-reliable center-to-QB exchange.
- FSU couldn't bring their athleticism to bear and playing from behind exposed a weakness frequently attributed to the Hokies in seasons past: conditioning and depth.
- Tech's defensive scheme under Bud Foster is eternally vulnerable to under/seam/slant routes. It relies on forcing quick QB decisionmaking in the pass. The high football IQ QBs (the ones who know their reads in their sleep and have good situational awareness) will always be able to exploit the defensive scheme.
- McClease and the counter runs are something Tech hasn't had in a while. It will make Jackson more successful in the pass. Last season nobody respected Tech's run-by-committee attack, for good reason.
- Tech's defense (whether by scheme, athletes, or gameplanning) absolutely shut down the horizontal movement. This is something that's also been a bit of an Achilles' heel against elite teams in the past.
- I saw better defensive tackling than I've seen in a long time.
- Still concerned about Tech's resilience in their defensive line.
- Tech's offense self-inflicted more wounds than it took from FSU defense. The 4th and goal misfire could have been playcalled differently -- but that's armchair gamecalling.
- While I think it's universally a tactic against tempo offenses, it looked pretty blatant in a couple of cases that Tech defenders were flopping to cause a stoppage. Again, it's used everywhere, but pretty bad form wherever it's used.
- Josh Jackson, when he had time, made the right decisions, didn't turn the ball over when he misfired. I think he had happy feet. He needs to make his reads faster. And I think he relies on jump balls a bit too much, which may be an offensive gamecalling thing.
I agree. Everyone should hold on to their comments until after the game, it would definitely make the game threads more entertaining.
VT needs to clone the lunchpail or cut it into about 5 pieces.
Venue observation:
In the second half, the crowd was NOT a factor. The tomahawk chant doesn't have the same impact when 1) you've practiced with it, and 2) you're up by two touchdowns. VT handled the pressure extremely well, even when it looked like FSU could potentially get back into the game after a big play.
I'm disappointed in the offense. Yes, they didn't allow any turnovers (which is nice), but 3 fumbles and stalling on FSU's side of the field 4 times in a row was just sad. We hired Fuente for a high octane offense and in year 3, I'm just not seeing it. Game managing was good, but we were playing not to lose.
You wouldn't know it from Beamer's face, but special teams was ON POINT.
Lastly, Bud Foster earned his paycheck several times over, and he's doing more with less than the offense. I know people don't like hearing this, but he certainly showed more than Fuente's 3x paycheck...
Yes and no IMO. Again recall the first quarter. We came out like a well oiled machine to go up by ten. We had a window early and we attacked with an efficiency I haven't seen in a while. Yes we stalled, but we delivered offense at the most important time. We clearly have work to do, but let's not underestimate the talent on FSU. They tightened up considerably and we turned down our aggression. And we won. My biggest takeaway was that Fuente and Foster are two of the best in the business. Out preparation showed.
