Pitt Blather: A Savage Beating

Justin at Pitt Blather diagnosed each of the 8 sacks from Saturday's game. It's a rather interesting read. Here are a couple of quotes:

If you look, youll see NFL QBs had anywhere from 4 seconds to 2.3 seconds between snap and sack on average. The longer the better, obviously. Right smack in the middle was about 3.2 seconds from snap to sack. So, if your QB is sacked on average later than 3.2 seconds, your OL is above average. Below that, obviously means below average. The worst in the NFL at that point was the Arizona Cardinals and poor Kevin Kolb only had 2.3 seconds to get rid of the ball before his average sack. You cant control for mobile QBs, but its a good way to judge things overall.

and

Overall average time from snap to sack or pressure that screws up the play: 2.28 seconds. On the first watch, I felt Savage couldve gotten 2 or 3 throws off on these plays. The problem was 5 of the 7 actual sacks came on 4 man rushes. A QB should have more than 2.3 to 2.7 seconds on a 4 man rush. Your OL needs to give you that 3+ seconds to get the ball off. If you break down the sacks, its at least easy to see that there were huge mental issues. The only time you should be under 2.8 seconds is if theres a blitz and then its on the QB to read the blitz and find the hot receiver.

He meant the only time you should be hit in 2.8 seconds is on a blitz...or when you're playing the lunchpail defense.

A savage beating...I see what you did there

And I like it!!

Hokies.

That was a pretty good breakdown of the sacks Savage took and the time it took our D to apply pressure on each play. Hats off to Justin for conducting what had to have been a very painful exercise.

I also took the time to read all of the comments - the whole thing is well worth the time to read.

Also, there were several times when Savage barely escaped the rush. Did you evaluate those?

-if I evaluated every time VT got pressure Id be up all night. I narrowed it to just sacks.

If I could upvote this I would. I just started watching this on Netflix and I am loving it!

Here's a turkey leg. You go and get yourself to where you can vote on things. I believe in you. Don't abuse your power once you get there. Be a fair and honest judge about who you give your turkey legs to. These free internet points don't come cheap.

Thank you thank you!

Breaking Bad - one of the best, if not THE best, TV series ever. There are so many twists, turns, and surprises - you'll enjoy every second.

To be fair, our 4 man rushes are probably the equivalent of sending 8-9 defenders with other teams.

Well we do send a #MANBEARPIG on all of those rushes.

He's 1/2 man, 1/2 bear, and 1/2 pig! Clearly he counts for >1.

Pitt started each drive inside its 20yd line limiting its offensive options and VT started almost all its series beyond their 35 yard line.

^^^Such a frank beamer thing to do.

Frank Beamer will always prefer to win the field position battle, to a high scoring offense. That has been how he racked up his wins over the years.

Isn't it great how every team we play immediately has a terrible O-line?
