Which is the Bigger Hit...

I may need some GIF support on this one... but which is the bigger hit.

Kyshoen Jarret on Devin Street (Pitt) on Saturday

KJ also whacked that Marshall receiver in the end zone this year and took away the ball -

But, I thought Wayne Ward's hit was the best - totally decleated that WVU player!

Wards hit by far. You could see if forming from about 15 yards away when Andre is tracking to his right. Then the whole stadium held there breath as they waited for it to actually happen. Then BOOOOOOOM! The stadium went absolutely crazy. I think the fact that Davis takes it to the house becomes an afterthought because the hit was so nasty.

The Dude Abides

First of all I would like to say first time caller long time listener.

Wards hit for sure. We were losing that game 14-7 at halftime and that PR return changed the momentum of the game. BTW Andre Davis had a punt return, rushing and receiving TD all in the 3rd of that game.

ISE '05? I was on the 5 year plan and am ISE Dec '06. Chances are good we had a lot of classes together. Symposium spring 05?

Yes sir, I am ISE 05 and I did partake in the Symposium of spring 05. Our team worked with Volvo Trucks of America. Highlight of that event was taking shots with Professor Lockhart.

Did you by any chance participate in the ISE bar crawl?

I did not participate in the bar crawl. We worked with Gates on their calender process pretty much wasting money and making ridiculous claims, which my group stuck me with making during all our presentations. We had Nachlas as our advisor. I was a pretty good presenter, though, if I may toot my own horn.

You may recall seeing my initial presentation on our topic where I pulled out the Michael Vick line from the commercial..."Now, having access to one of the best golf courses on the East Coast wasn't initially in the project plan....but it should be..."

EDIT: Softside trailer loading project?

Yes, my team did the soft side trailer project. How the hell did you remember that!? Unfortunately I don't remember much from the presentations because I was nervous wreck because unlike yourself I was a terrible presenter.

Eh, I remember bits and pieces. Soft side trailer just seemed to stick in my memory. I remember the UPS truck routing project too, but I think that's it.

Welcome, young blood.

Yes, one of Davis', if not THE, best game of his career. He was an absolute lethal deep threat.

That hit was amazing! I was in the stands that game and literally had no idea we scored because all we were talking about was that hit!

Beat WVU

I'm pretty sure Wayne Ward also had a rather crushing hit during punt return in a game against Syracuse up at the Carrier dome once that was better than the one against WVU. I seem to remember an article saying he earned the nickname "Hospital" Ward after his Syracuse hit. Wish I could find a clip of it, but I remember that Syracuse gunner seeming like he grew wings because he flew so high and far after Ward hit him.

I'd like to nominate another

Let's Go...

That is just glorious.

LT's block for wilson in that game was glorious as well, tho I think it was called back on a holding call...

It was. And I think the holding was on Danny Coale. I remember because that was the single mistake he made while wearing the Maroon and Orange. Four years, one mistake, and one un-mistakable catch...

That's gotta go at the top of the list just due to the uniform that guy was wearing.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

But of course.

I almost fell out of my seat at Scott Stadium from going so crazy on this play. Nice find, sir.

Wow, a "big hit" thread on TKP. This is going to be good.

Gotta go with Ward. First, I saw it live and didn't even realize Davis scored at first because I was too busy trying to make sure the dude was alive. Second, it was against WVU.

Personally I've never been that impressed with big hits on special teams. I feel like they're kind of cheap since the special teamer normally has no idea what's coming. At least wide receivers are expecting a safety to come flying in.

I'm also more impressed with Jarret's hit because literally every big hit nowadays is a penalty so it was awesome that he pulled one off without getting flagged. Here's another big hit by a VT alum that had me out of my seat.

...and you think Street had ANY idea that THAT was coming? Most big hits are because the hitee doesn't know its coming.

I didn't really phrase that correctly. On special teams, a player is running with his body completely open so it's a bit easier to hit them because you can just aim right for his chest. On a normal play, the receiver is going to have any combination of his arms or helmet in the way so it's a little harder to hit them right where you want.

Honorable mention: Macho versus Jacoby Ford (i think), @ Clemson. On the swing pass, he decleated Jacoby. I am at work and Youtube is blocked, but I know TKP can find the youtube of that hit.

That Macho hit was big. I think I like Flower's hit at 1:02 more though. So many highlights from this game. The epitome of Hokie Football in my opinion.

Man I miss DJ Parker.

And all the rest of those guys.

Well, most of them.

I miss linebackers like Adibi!

I remember watching this game in Owens as a freshman (not my usual game-watching location, but it was an exception that weekend). The macho Macho hit from this game has stood out in my mind as one of my favorite defensive plays since following Hokie football. It's crazy, though, to think that I had forgotten about the similar beatdown Flowers laid on that other guy.
I'd also like to point out the fact that we held Clemson to 8 total rushing yards. This also includes holding CJ Spiller, who was considered one of the best RBs in the country at the time, to 3 yards rushing. Our defense also forced three fumbles, and picked off two passes.
This was one of the most thorough games we've played in the last several years, offense and defense alike, but I especially agree that this game represented BeamerBall at its finest.

"Stick it in, stick it in, stick it in!" - William Addison Caldwell, 1872

I believe that Clemson team also had James Davis. He and CJ were 'Thunder and Lightning'. Certainly was a cloudless, clear night, thanks to our High Pressure zone Defense (where's Eshiben to let me know if it really is high pressure fronts that make for good, clear weather and no storms?!?!)

The Dude Abides

Sorry, embedded this above before reading you

I'd have to go Wayne Ward on this one as well. It might be the greatest hit in the history of college football. The fact that it was a Hokie obliterating a Mountaineer is just gravy. That hit was one level above Zombie Kill: Bug on a Windshield.

Honestly though, all the ones people have mentioned on here have a special place in my heart.

Let's Go...

I'm getting older, I don't like these hits anymore. Intuitively, they get you excited when it happens, but it doesn't take long to me to rationally wish it wasn't part of the sport. I wouldn't have argued at all if Kyshon was flagged for targeting.

I agree. As I get older, I like these less and less. Now when a big hit happens, I don't hit the ceiling with excitement, I start to worry about the guy that got hit. Especially if it looks cheap. Up here in Steelers country, everyone used to love James Harrison, but I hated him.

I guess my whole rationale behind it is that players need to have respect for each other, even hated teams and players, as people first and sporting opponents second. No one should have to go through a hit that takes them out of commission just because they didn't 'have their head on a swivel', as so many people try to tell me.

The worst of these I've seen in college are the DBs from LSU. They appear to delight in taking advantage of defenseless players, laying hits on people that shouldn't be legal. They were until this year, so there's very little recourse but to complain, but I don't like it when people step on the field and leave their empathy for their fellow man on the sideline.

Disagree. I view it as a legitimate football play in an attempt to jar the ball loose, which I think it was if it had been reviewed. If he doesn't lead with the helmet, as Kyshoen didn't, I have no issue with it. He lowers the boom with his shoulder to try to make a play for his team. Absolutely no issue with that whatsoever.

I don't have a problem with they Kysheon hit. Or the Kam hit on Fred Davis. Most of these hits at least have the recipient seeing the player coming at him, and therefore have the chance to prepare themselves for the worst. The only one I'd take issue with nowadays is probably the Ward WVU hit since the guy couldn't see him coming. Probably the Macho hit against Clemson was from outside the peripheral vision of the receiver, but since it wasn't a headshot, I'm cool with that, too. All in all, I don't think there is a hit on here that I'm really against.

I'm not against them so much as saying I would prefer they weren't in the game. The game of football would be just fine without any of these hits.

I'm sure he'd be okay. Did they have water treadmills back then? See where I'm going with this...Mountaineer on a.......okay, I'll stop.

Touchdown Tech - Bill Roth

Both hits were nice but the hit that stands out for me is from way back when BEN TAYLOR was scaring people off the field. Virginia Tech was playing the Temple Owls on the old Veteran's Stadium and Tech was on defense. The Owls ran a crossing route and Ben Taylor come up and de-cleated the wide receiver. It wasn't two plays later the owls ran the same route and Taylor again de-cleated the same WR. This time the WR got up looked at the QB and staggered off the field not to be seen again due to the fear of Taylor. His two hits will be my measuring stick for Hokie Highlight hits.

Wagon's full and Momma I'm coming home.

When I was in probably 4th grade, I was tasked with the assignment of drawing a person for art class. Specifically, we were supposed to start being able to draw faces that didn't look like Sloth from the Goonies. I sucked at drawing faces (and drawing in general) so I drew a picture of Ben Taylor destroying that Temple player. Faces are a lot easier to draw when there's a helmet around them.

Now I gotta find this picture.

@historyhokie.bsky.social

Turkey leg for you for making me exhale quickly through my nose at that story.

And all the turkey legs I can give away to the person who can find this hit!

Wagon's full and Momma I'm coming home.

Ben Taylor would really get after ya- I remember this game and thinking "why in the world would you run the SAME play with the SAME guy??!?" I think the Temple QB was getting back at his WR for stealing his girlfriend or lunch money.

Was that the same game that he also punted because our punter was a horror show?

I am not sure why this hit hasn't been mentioned yet. Flowers delivered that hit almost standing still.

Hasn't been mentioned because the hit looked a lot more painful than it really was. It didn't jar the receiver too much.

Let's Go...

Agree - he got right back up after being hit.

Wayne Ward's hit changed that game. I remember jumping off of the couch and punching through the ceiling tile in my apartment over that one. I also remember Marcus Vick throwing a block for Kevin Jones against Pitt in 2003 that was amazing.
