Other VT Sports - Fall 2018

I'll fill this in tomorrow with how all the non-football fall sports are doing, but for now I wanted to say that the VT Women's Soccer team upset #6 UVA 1-0, and we now lead the Commonwealth 2.0-0.5

Go Hokies!

10/1 Edit: Well, "tomorrow" has come and gone 3 times since I posted, but now I have a moment to update some of the fall sports:

Men's Soccer

The Men's Soccer team had a decent start after being unranked in the preseason, as they won their first 3 games by a combined 3 goals before earning the #17 spot prior to a 2-2 draw against UCF. The draw dropped us to #21 leading up to the UVA game, where the score was 1-1 in the second minute and the final score was... 1-1. Since then, we beat UNCG, lost 2-1 to #1 Wake Forest off of 2 2nd-half goals by the Deacons, beat Longwood 5-1, lost to #18 NC State 1-0, and beat Syracuse 1-0.

The team is currently #21 at 6-2-2 overall, 1-2-1 in the ACC, with upcoming games against South Carolina tomorrow and #3 UNC on Saturday.

Women's Soccer

The Women's Soccer team had a largely uninspiring non-conference run, starting with draws against both San Diego and #22 Georgetown in the season-opening Virginia Tech Tournament and continuing with 4 wins over outmatched foes, a 1-1 draw with Georgia, and a 1-0 loss to Alabama. They've been up and down in conference play, starting with a 3-0 loss to #7 FSU and a 2-0 win over 4-6-2 Miami before upsetting #6 UVA 1-0 off a 14th minute goal. They followed that upset with a 2-0 win over 4-6-1 Pitt.

The team has yet to sniff the rankings, but that may change when they update this week. The team is currently 7-2-3, 3-1 in the ACC, with upcoming games against #11 BC on Thursday and #15 Duke on Sunday.

Women's Volleyball

I will admit that I don't know a whole lot about volleyball, so this'll be brief. As of right now, the Hokies are 11-5, 2-2 in the ACC, and haven't been ranked at all this season. They've lost both their games against ranked competition, #18 Baylor and #9 Pitt, with the rest of their losses coming to Samford, UTSA, and NC State.

They have upcoming matches against GT on Friday and Clemson on Sunday.

Comments

Technically not really, since this is a more general thread that I'm planning to update throughout the fall...

But I guess it was funny that Fireman posted as I was creating my post, both over an hour after the game ended, and I'll never turn down an opportunity to drink, so

Good point! I always enjoy threads that celebrate VT's success in sports besides football and basketball. As a former women's soccer player (not for VT), I loved seeing the win over loluva!

And who doesn't love a reason to drink!? Cheers! Go Hokies!

While we were all still wallowing in self-pity last Sunday, one of our freshman wrestlers was busy doing this:

“You got one guy going boom, one guy going whack, and one guy not getting in the endzone.”
― John Madden (describing VT's offense?)

VT men's soccer just beat Syracuse 1-0 in 2OT

The taste is so divine
A chemical come alive
Welcome to your vice
Good luck with life
'Cause you can't
You can't
You can't kill me that easily

More good wrestling news. Out of 10 weight classes, we have 7 (including 3 transfers) ranked in FLO's preseason top-25.

133 - #11 Korbin Myers (r-Jr transfer from Edinboro)
149 - #14 Ryan Blees (r-Sr)
165 - #15 Mekhi Lewis (r-Fr)
174 - #5 David McFadden (r-Jr)
184 - #4 Zack Zavatsky (r-Sr)
197 - #16 Tom Sleigh ( r-Sr, transfer from Bucknell)
285 - #7 Billy Miller ( r-Sr, transfer from Edinboro)

This could shape up to be another fantastic year for VT on the mat.

I've updated the main post with a brief synopsis of our fall sports seasons so far.

Just picked up a point in the Clash this morning from Women's XC!

But it is a wash as on the Men's side VT finished 6th and UVA 4th. Some bright news for VT, Peter Seufer from EC Glass High School won the ACC Individual title

Edit: for tweet

Still means we're 0.5 points above last year.

+1 point for Women's Soccer (DNP last year)
-1 point for Men's CC vs last year
+0.5 points for tying in Men's Soccer (lost last year)

Women's soccer team just won the opening game of the NCAA tournament against Texas! They will play Arkansas next Thursday.
