The Athletic has been pretty decent so far. I know some of the print groups are not very happy with it and hoping it fails.
Not trying to throw shade, could someone fill me in on the hype about The Athletic? Seems like a start up sports blog but everyone I know including IRL friends are acting like its super prestigious and obviously a lot of journalists are leaving to go work for them.
Gonna be honest. Nothing special. Lots of coverage, some good some bad. The writing styles don't seem to have changed. For example, Bitter's just the same. Fairly light coverage, no special insider access granted by moving over. I still hope these guys can make a living doing it. At the intro rate, it was definitely worth a try.
Completely disagree. Great long form write ups you will never see in paper. For example the behind the scenes stories they did on every team they cover.

It's behind paywall. I don't think per community guidelines I can. Also you know there are a lot more teams than VT right? Bitter has only been there what two months?
I think you can link it just not post things here that came from behind the paywall. If you link it and someone clicks on it without proper authN/Z then they'll get bounced.

If you like college basketball then you'd love The Athletic. I got an account last year just for Ken Pom articles, the fact Bitter joined made it even better.
Have to disagree as well. I originally subscribed a year ago and cancelled my membership. They had like 7 writers and it was basically nothing. This year they are absolutely killing it though. Bruce Feldman, Bitter with the dedicated VT beat, and the app is crystal clear. There is nothing I hated more than opening the links to the Roanoke Times on twitter and having to read through ads and weird type on my phone. Athletic app is clean, add free and excellent. I'd say its certainly worth the frequent sale price of like 25$ a year.
