Thinking about our big wins over the last 15+ years (post-MV7 era), I realized that the majority of them have been away games, like Ohio State in 2014, or the conference championships. Personally, I think that the last big win in Lane was against Miami in 2011. We had just lost a Saturday night game versus Clemson, the atmosphere and the finish were nuts, and the game really pulled the team back together and propelled them to a successful 6-0 stretch run (that unfortunately led to the all-too-forgettable ACC-CG). What do you think? Other games that come to mind are the back-to-back 2009 Nebraska and Miami games.
Regardless, I will say it again that it is TIME for a big win in Lane. I hope everybody is ready to give our guys the biggest home field advantage they have ever experienced. In Lane by 7:30 PM and loud as possible. As has been reported, Notre Dame circled this one on their calendars. Let's show them why they did.

HOKIES!
Has ND ever played in Blacksburg?
Nope, the game in South Bend two years ago was the first meeting ever.
We need to start off the series with them 2-0.
Let's Go
HOKIES!!

Dangit you just reminded me I'm waiting on Odessy to come out so I can avenge Leonidas
One reason I am not too upset about not having Gameday is that it just plain wears out the fans for the game. All the kids getting up ass crack early don't have the energy we need to have in the stadium later. Focus all effort to making that shit too loud for TV
FTFY.
Jokes aside, I agree. Hopefully everyone comes ready.
Speak for yourself. I'm 34, went to Clemson game day last year, and still screamed my ass off. If my "old" ass can do it, so can these kids.
You probably don't drink until you pass out a few hours before the game though. That's what happens to a lot of students on gameday lol.
You can't drink all day if you don't start in the morning.
Miami wasn't even ranked when we played them in 2011. From my quick research, it's been a LONG time since we beat a ranked team at home. As far as big home wins in the last 15 years go, I think there's three in the last decade:
Evans still holds the Single Game rushing record for that game against Maryland. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virginia_Tech_Hokies_football_statistical_...
The play where he trucked the Maryland defender is one of my favorite plays. Potato quality - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVJY_1wU8Lo
Jeez I wish there was an HD version of The Darren Evans Truck Stick. I still think he's my favorite Hokie Of. All. Time.
Ask and you shall receive
What are they saying Threw the chicken bone at him at the end there.
I don't see it.
Our reference amount with my guys growing up was it is the proverbial finger.
But I think I'm lost here.
I was wondering the same thing. Maybe they're implying that Evans (ate Skinner's lunch and) threw the chicken bone back at him.
I don't know. I'm reaching hard.
Oh man, you gotta love those hits that result in the broadcast booth just collectively giggle-wooing for a solid 10 seconds.
Jeez I wish there was a filly with thick ol' thighs in my neighhhhborhood.
Also, why the heck isn't the gif created from this video.
Wait...hold my barley...
Working on it. I can't use the YouTube link directly because Giphy has a 15 minute max length.

You are an absolute saint. We should make a pinup calendar outta you cause you got legs for days.
EDIT This is also why we need a TKP archive of all the classic moments.
While this video was awesome - I had forgotten that run - the next video that popped up right after it was the final drive for each team at the 2011 Miami game.
After watching that, I am so pumped for Saturday!!! This is going to be a long week.....
Miami was ranked #20 in 2016.
Its the Curse of Matty "F'in" Ryan and the rain game. I don't know what its gonna take to break that, but until we do, we are destined to only win big games we have no business winning and lose games we have no business losing.
Trust me, it goes back WELL before that.
Did someone say 2011 Miami game?
Ryan Willis got us.
A victory over ND would *not* call for it, but does anyone remember the last time the field was rushed at Lane. I think it was Boston College 1999. Before that it was Miami 1995. I can't think of any others.
I was there when we rushed after beating FSU in 2007. I feel like there may have been one more, but that may be the last one.
I was a freshman in 06 when we stomped 7Clemson and we stormed the field. In 2009 after beating Miami we stormed the field (but it was super sloppy wet and not a lot of people did it so not sure it counts). I'm not remembering any others
2003 Miami as well I believe.
Yup, I was on the field then.
Nebraska in 2009
That's the last one I remember. I was not there but my son called me from the field. lol
A lot of people came on the field after 2011 Miami
Most notably that kid that wanted to jump around Beamer and got pwned by the cop.
Yea he got tossed by his little backpack
I'm so glad that everyone has seen this bit of the footage. lol.
This was the inspiration for Willie Taggart's backpack, btw.
Underrated observation right here.
that's disgusting!
My wife and I went on the field after we beat GT in 2010. Was it warranted? Hell no, but we figured we might as well because everyone else had at that point and we were sitting in the lower section of the South End zone.
UVA in 1990. The goal posts actually came down after that one. However, I think the administration permitted it since the year after they were changing to the NFL uprights.
I was at Tech from 95-99, and while I can't remember the specific games, I'm pretty sure we rushed that field more than twice. I seem to recall the administration getting pretty pissed off about having to replace the goalposts multiple times, and finally switching to the collapsible style sometime during the 99 season.
Syracuse 62-0 in 99'. Did we rush the field after that debacle?
I was at Miami 95 when the goal posts were ripped out. We did not rush in 99 after Syracuse, but we did after BC. I remember Beamer on the mic asking how many of us he was gonna see in New Orleans.
The old goal post were still up for the BC game to end the 99 home season; one upright went to Big Al's (it may still be there, across from the bar).
I think the collapsible style was implemented for the 00 season.
The other one went to the Duck Pond.
WVU was ranked #7 in 2004 when Tech beat them. I believe that's the second highest ranked opponent that Tech has ever beaten. That's one of my all-time favorite wins in Hokie football history. The year before, WVU beat us when we were ranked #3 and sent our season in a downward spiral while propelling them to a 6-1 Big East record and a share of the conference title. Although WVU didn't tailspin till the end of the 2004 season, losing to us eliminated them from any National Championship discussions.
It's also fun hearing about the stories of the Tech fans chanting ACC to the WVU fans after the game and getting stuff thrown at them, so if anyone was there and wants to share their experience, feel free.
Miami were #3 in 2003, WVU were #6 in 2004
Miami had a 2 next to their name in 2003, and WVU had a 7 next to their name in 2004. Other polls might confirm what you're saying though.
2003 Miami was #2 in both the AP and Coaches polls as well as the BCS Standings.
2004 WVU was #6 in the AP poll and #7 in the Coaches poll.
It's possible that whoever broadcasted the game used the Coaches poll for their numbers, but the AP Poll was and is the de facto standard.
Interesting. I just checked on Youtube with Hokietapes, and the ESPN broadcast does show WVU as #7. I thought ESPN always stuck with the AP or CFP/BCS rankings. There doesn't look to be any reason to go with the Coaches Poll that week, as #1-5 were the same, and Ohio State (#6 AP/#7 Coaches) was on a bye.
I've seen CBS change their poll on a weekly (if not quicker) basis to allow them to have the highest rankings possible for their SEC game, but not ESPN.
ESPN used to be a sponsor of the coaches poll from 1997-2004. So you can assume that any ESPN broadcast would use the Coaches' Poll during that time frame.
This gif is so great, the way he sucks the words back in and then licks his lips.
We are due a big time win on the national stage. OSU was probably the last one, but beating ND (top 10), at home, on national TV, primetime, in front of a jacked up crowd would be awesome. I'd love to see a result like our game against Miami in 03 where we just came out with our hair on fire and beat some ass.
Derailing ND's season would be awesome.
Was saying this to a friend yesterday. It's time for the Hokies to make a statement on a national stage. This will be the third time Fuente has had the 8 pm ABC game and the second time at home. He's 0-2 so far. Time to win one. The FSU win was awesome and all but it's lost some of it's sheen now.
Actually the fourth, including the 2016 ACCCG.
I agree with everything except the whole "make/made a statement" thing. For one, it's overused & played out, plus it never won us a National Championship. Two, ND has always been punching above their weight class. They're almost never as good as advertised. Just go out, expose them & win the damn game. I think it's VERY important for us to win it because, someone on here mentioned after the loss to them in the ACC Tourney in hoops, that a number of them were arrogant & condescending saying things like "can't believe we lost to them in football." We absolutely NEED/HAVE to win this game, otherwise pretty much everyone not affiliated with Virginia Tech will label the '16 win as a "fluke".
My thought is this: VT, and specifically Lane Stadium, has a great reputation as being a tough team, and place, to play. I truly believe that part of what makes us an easy sell for these prime time games is the atmosphere in Lane and the thought that we can beat anyone in our house. It's been awhile since we've truly lived up to that reputation.
We hired Fuente because he looked like a guy that could bring VT back into national relevance. So far he has done that, but he also needs to win a few games like this.
It's not fair to expect VT to win this game. They're underdogs and rightfully so. I can step back and appreciate that a loss Saturday night doesn't really have an impact on this programs expectations this year and in the future. But as a fan, I know what a win would mean and I want to see proof that the staff we have is capable of winning big games on a big stage.
in a real bind, anyone have 2 tix at face for sale?
I feel for you if you're in a bind. It's going to be tough to find 2 at face.
Speaking from experience, don't buy from anyone you don't know and trust. Counterfeiters will be out, and unless you have an 8 month preggo wife with you who can cry on command, they're gonna put your ass on the street and PKs won't have a table for you. (anOSU, 2015)
Nobody is going to sell ND tickets for face value this week. That is a pipe dream.
Can confirm - my buddy tried to buy 4 tickets and they were below face and turned out to be a scam - working with cc company now to try to get money back
Ah jeez. At least he found out now and not on Saturday. Usually counterfeiters are on Craiglist and selling off the street.
Just imagine if we didn't lost to ODU...
I understand where you are going with that statement, but it just makes me think that if we didn't fall flat on our faces against ODU, it would have been against Duke or ND. Or even worse, ECU, if mother nature hadn't reared her ugly face.
In the grand scheme of this season, I'm (begrudgingly) appreciative that it happened against ODU and not Duke, for obvious conference record reasons. I feel like the Duke game allowed the team to get back up on their feet and show that they weren't down for the count. And now they're going up against a stout ND team that is going to want payback for 2016, so they will need every bit of a chip on their shoulder to play the best damn game of their lives and show the college football world that we're not messing around anymore!
We have a shot... turnover free, offense will need to move the ball, defense will need to keep them behind the chains. VT will need 35 points to win, IMO. Doable with the Lane crowd and offense playing pretty well lately.

There's the man! Much love, glad to have you back.
