So, ECU decided they didn't want to get beaten by us, and NC State decided they didn't want to get beaten by WVU?
Does this mean WVU has an opening? Perhaps we invite them down to Blacksburg to visit the Black Diamond Trophy?

So they backed out of the game, and then agreed upon a different game despite the fact we said we were open to rescheduling? And then used their support on April 16, 2007 as reason we can't say anything about it?

I think there's a difference between talking about the possibility of scheduling a game vs. tweeting out that the game is scheduled...
The article says the game is contingent upon whether either team reaches their respective conference championship game.
It would be contingent upon us being able to host the game, and not have something bigger to play in.
Which leads me to believe that Marshall or Southern Miss would be perfect for this. (Marshall is currently leading their div, so who knows how it plays out.)
I was poking around Wikipedia and the football pages for fun, and noticed that ECU and NC State have a trophy. So I click on the link to the rivalry series.

Carolina probably isn't an option since they lost a home game.
Playing South Carolina would be awesome. Also they do not appear to be very good this year so it would be as good a time as any to play them.
I doubt South Carolina would play us the week after playing Clemson. IT's most likely a school that we'd have to pay to come to Lane.
ECU should have to pay them to come to Lane.
SCAR, UCF, WVU or nothing IMO. No need to risk another huge upset unless we need a 6th win but hopefully not in that position

ECU cancels this game. Pockets the $500k from Tech despite the game not being played. Has their writers squawk on social and the radio about how much of an asshole we are for even thinking about asking for a reimbursement because they sent us a card and $100k on April 16, 2007. And then, after our school said multiple times we were looking to reschedule, they set up a matchup with NCSU instead?
First, sue their asses for the game check. Second, cancel the whole series.
Given their actions, it seems like they want out of this series just as bad as we do...
Why wouldn't they? They've won their last game against us and they know we'll never overlook them again. It's only blowouts on the horizon for the Pirates.

It was fun for them when we were vulnerable and they knew they could beat us in the latter Beamer years. Now that we've waxed them two years in a row, I don't think they look forward to the game quite as much. I hope we can somehow end this series quickly. Always a lose-lose proposition for us, and they're not even good business partners.
The rest of the post was speculation and exaggeration. I realize it's more fun to make a knee jerk reaction of indignation to fit a narrative but it's premature to frame the events in this manner. I get that some people were upset about how the cancellation of the game went down and some may even be upset that they are playing NC State instead of us but I'm going to trust that Whit deserves the benefit of the doubt in his decisions on how to handle this situation.
After this, I won't be happy about anything regarding ECU until they're permanently off our future schedules

I definitely think Whit is looking for some way to get a game on that Saturday if we aren't in the ACCCG. Too much money to be left on the table even with us having the extra home game this year. With the new red shirt rule there is also some football incentive to play that weekend too. I think it would also result in an extra week of practice which would be good for a young team. Biggest downside would be injury rick. Having three home games in a row could also result in poor attendance.

No kidding. I never even watched the third movie, just because I was annoyed at the patently-obvious money grab in stretching what should have been a single movie into three long ones.
I've never seen any of them because I refused to go see them in the theater for similar reasons, and haven't bothered to try to watch them through other means since.

Legitimate question here, if we did schedule a game for December 1st, would they honor the tickets bought for the ECU game or try to sell completely new tickets and refund those that bought tickets for ECU?
I would imagine they would take the same strategy as NC State, where they honor the tickets already sold.
Teel wrote an article on the situation today and Babcock basically said that the ECU tickets will be honored for that game. If we don't play, we can put the tickets towards the HC donation for next year or get reimbursed.
That sly devil. Take already received operating revenue and give the opportunity to allocate it towards capital projects/scholarship fund since there will be an operational surplus from the lack of a 7th home game. Great move.

Yes, but you still have the operating expenses of one game (labor, cost of food, etc) that you don't owe and season ticket revenue you've already received. Great way to offer HC members an opportunity to put that towards their donations and put that money toward the scholarship fund and other HC-funded endeavors.
How much of the concessions actually returns back to VT? I thought most of it was used as the fundraiser for whatever group worked that stand.

I doubt that VT would give up all profit on it, but since IIRC the concession workers are mostly volunteers they probably get a decent chunk of it for their organization.

The ACC buys insurance in case games get cancelled so VT will be getting some reimbursement even if the 12th game doesn't get played.
I think we should go in full FU mode and try to get USCe on contract for this year and two more years (home and home). I see that they have a full schedule, so maybe they should just dump ECU for us.

Personally I would love to see something completely out of left field and play someone we have never played before. I know it won't happen but I get bored playing the same regional teams in out of conference play. I want to see interesting and new match ups that we don't normally get. It's what I used to love about bowl season but even that has been mostly sanitized now. I know we aren't going to play anyone in P5 so why not reach out and find something new?
how about: UNLV, UNR, Fresno St, Colorado St, Ball State, Louisiana Lafayette, North Texas, Rice, SMU, Toledo, Tulane, Memphis, Wichita St
any of those would be a lot more fun IMO but I know ticket sales is always an issue.

I'm surprised that we haven't scheduled anything with UNLV ever since Whit's assistant got hired there.
If I were AD, I would have scheduled a series with Memphis right after hiring Fuente away. Also, around that time there were rumblings that the Big 12 was considering them for expansion, so it could have been a way to get a P5 game or two at G5 prices.
I'd be down to see us play Toledo. That way, after we beat UnotBak and they claim it was a fluke, we can beat the crap out of Toledo and shut them up.

Why is this not done more often even if games weren't cancelled? Seems to me it would create increased revenue and helping to install new schemes in prep for a bowl game
Logistics and NCAA rules, for the short version.
There's a limit to the number of games that can be played. And you can't just decide to travel with a team, fans, equipment, etc across the country on a few weeks notice. Plus the home team (and town) have to be prepared for the game as well.
