Topic lives on but, Fireman brought it up in another topic.
Was scrolling through the twitterverse a little while ago and saw this tweet from Chris Fowler:
https://twitter.com/cbfowler/status/1047586178080407563?s=19
Needs to be embedded.
The tweet states: Metallica will set the tone, but with a wrinkle and that this line is a tease.
Metallica has a show in Austin, Texas the same night. I am hoping it may be a pre-recorded video from the band, perhaps congratulating Beamer on the statue unveiling.
Feel free to chime in. The excitement for this game is building to a very high level.

Chris Fowler is followed by more people than VA Tech fans and people going to this game. If he wanted to tease something it would be something to do with the broadcast itself. It makes no sense for him to tease something that Hokie Vision and the University would have to be a big part of organizing. Expect something cool on the TV broadcast. Perhaps a new vantage point for people on TV to see.
Its both. Something for TV and something that is special to us.
Based off of which part of the tweet, though? It literally ends with a SNF at 8pm plug. He doesn't say VT fans are in for something really special. I mean yall gotta forgive me I guess, but every year something like this happens and people hear something that was never said.
I expect a crazy vantage point of the action, possibly one of them in the stands.
Sorry. I should have been clearer. I'm not basing it on the tweet alone. I'm basing it on things I have heard aka #sauces.
I have heard 2 things. One is that the skydivers are back. ABC is going to be in the plane with them, and possibly have cameras strapped to the skydivers.
The second I have sworn not to reveal. That is the part more for the VT fans than the national audience.
https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x2v6749
Sorry this is literally the only thing I could think of after that.
I liked the video the first time I saw it, but now every time I come to this page it autoplays...
That's weird. I linked it instead.
James, Lars, Kirk, and Bob are the parachuters and they'll be melting faces on the way down. Gotcha.
Frank IS one of the parachuters!!!!
Camera vantage point from within the crowd would be neat.
Mod can feel free to delete. Fireman is always on his A game lol.
I believe this is deserving enough of its own thread
Thanks, the hype train is in full gear. I won't be in attendance and am regretting it at this point.
"This is James Hatfield from Metallica and we want to say KICK SOME IRISH ASS, Enter Night Exit Light, and Go Hokies!"
I don't see that happening. Notre Dame has a larger fanbase, and they would want to minimize the number of potential paying customers that they piss off. (They would probably think of it that way.)
I do see them trying to fire up the crowd, though. "Start jumping!"
Did you not see the ND fan page calling Sandman and most of Metallica's offerings "trash". Doesn't look to me like they would lose much by flipping them the bird.
Come on man it was right there
Metallica plays a full set in Blacksburg and it's livestreamed to the crowd in Austin.
Two words.

Edit: saw they're playing in Austin on Saturday. Maybe we get a shout out or a Beamer tribute before the game.
Double edit: guest picker on Game Day perhaps.
Ooooo, that would be interesting...
I mean, GameDay will be in Dallas, but that would leave plenty of time to get back to Austin.
To my own discredit, Hokie Vision is at least not ignoring it now.
I am hearing about VT pushing fans for a striping the stadium color effect game. Hope it looks good
Sorry... I'm kind of an asshole sometimes.
While I don't have a ton of faith in our fanbase to go all out for a color effect, I think it might actually look pretty alright.
No one sits in the correct seats especially in the student section but the entire student section is Orange so it should be pretty easy for students. Each section is a pretty large area so even if someone doesn't end up in their exact seats they have a decent radius to fit in. Also my tickets (and presumably all tickets) say "WEAR (COLOR)" in giant letters on the bottom so they are at least making it easy.
The rest is up to the fans to try to be part of something cool. If you're going do it!!!
Yeah...105 and 104 are gonna be blue.
pun intended... ?
PSA: When asking this question and the username is vtfly the answer is yes.
I thought we were sticking the visitors up in section 39?
Cadet blue and white unless they are allowed to do something for this game.
I've got sauces that it will be the goat(Frank Beamer) himself skydiving down during Metallica with Hank attached to his chest and a flaming leprechaun on a tag line. Don't @ me.
I mean, it's pretty obvious that's what Fowler was implying.
So Beamer was the wrinkle he was talking about
And Beamer will be wearing a t-shirt that says "more frank than hank"
Speaking of Frank, just got out of a talk led by him tonight and he dropped this gem of a quote:
I like country music. I like Tim McGraw... but I REALLY like Faith Hill
Continue on...
Lol that's definitely a Frank quote.
It was so easy to read this in Frank's voice
I wonder if he likes beer?
He's a keg-half-full kinda guy. ;^)
I hope its this
That's cool and all, but I just want to go 1-0. Metallica and Fowler hyping it up, awesome. AME, awesome. Recruits, awesome. Now let's win.
There is always one...
...and zero?
Really, we need to go 3-0 on Saturday to make up for the two bye weeks in a row to get us back on track for 15-0.
Just in case anyone actually thinks they're live-streaming Sandman from Metallica's set, it won't be that. Metallica has closed their encore with Sandman for every show for the last 2 years or so, so unless they're delaying kickoff for 2 hours that's not happening
I'm cool with it. Gives me more time to get the children to bed..
They're playing in Texas so it'd be more than 2 hours right?
The concert in Austin is clearly a cover story for their surprise appearance in Lane.
I mean there's no way they can play in Texas, they dont even have a fiddle in the band
I think you might be referring to WV.
I mean that lead guitar is hot, but not for a Louisiana man.
Well they better rosin up that bow for Faded Love
Let's all dance! or jump, whichever feels right.
VT wouldn't even need the full song. Theoretically they could just play the intro during from somewhere behind the scenes at ACL or on a secondary stage. It would likely be a lot of work to pull off live but certainly possible.
Being that it's ABC/real ESPN, we should actually get to see the intro and not a random music overlay, right?
We should see the whole shebang starting with the players coming out of the practice facility.
The broadcast starts at 8pm. Per the pregame plans, kickoff is scheduled for 8:21pm.
Am I getting old, if my first reaction was man its going to be late night getting back home from Lane?
If I remember right last year for the Clemson primteime game, I didn't get back into my vehicle until about 12am and that was probably a similar kickoff time.
You'll see it but more than likely Fowler and Herbie will be talking over it.....
If we're lucky, they won't cut to the visiting team right as our team is running out. Damn near ruined the intro to the Clemson game last year.
They have showed the entrance before with a camera starting in the tunnel as well. Its been a few years.
Maybe the team is skydiving into the stadium?
They usually run a camera rehearsal Friday afternoon/evening (I have a great picture from the first time they filmed the walk into and through the tunnel). Anybody want to camp out and report back?
Can you see it from Hokie House?
I saw their tour bus in Roanoke 😎
I saw their tour bus in front of Lane Stadium!
I wish Fowler hadn't responded to that troll giving him the exposure he was seeking... "Why aren't you going to Old Dominion this week?"
Because their Super Bowl was 2 weeks ago.
I love the fact he dismissed the hell out of it... "Why? Because fuck odu, that's why"
It's gonna be a simulcast Enter Sandman. Metallica will kick things off in Austin and Beamer will join in on lead guitar live in the stadium.
Don't you even tease me
I thought Beamer played the Trombone

Fun fact - Beamer actually did play the trombone as a kid. Every year he would come and talk to the MVs during band camp and tell us about it.
I think the trombone he's playing in the commercial was a gift from the MVs during his last season or sometime around then.
don't even tease me like this If I keep reading this thread I may have to run through a damn wall
The weekly "5 Things to Know" says fans will be instructed to hold up their cell phone lights during the tunnel walk,
which is something we've never done before. I was under the impression that the stadium lights can't instantaneously be turned off and on again, but this makes me wonder.Unless we're holding up our lights, under the lights, which seems more likely but less spooky.
Edit: Faulty memory
This brings up something I saw at the Dook game last weekend that I've never seen before. They manipulated the stadium lights for sort of a strobe effect several times. It was really cool.
Same effect they did at the final whistle of the Super Bowl. You're right, it was pretty cool, but I wonder if our lights are set up for that.
Not unless they managed to replace them in secret. Only a few colleges have the setup currently.
They would have to be LED to do a strobe show like that. Actually the closest place to Tech to have a package like that (made by Graybar) is just down the road in Martinsville. They are instant on and instant off and they can strobe along with several other different effects.
BOOM BABYYYYYYY
And the man represents. End of October is coming fast!
This was done last year before the Duke game. Stadium lights weren't turned off.
Yep, was there for that one. Was still pretty cool even with the lights on and that was with a smaller crowd due to the monsoon.
Huh, I was also there. Some memory I have. Maybe I'll forget about ODU by this time next year.
Edit: Totally remember now. I was so-so about it because everyone holding their phone kind of killed the ::stomp... clap::. Turned into ::stomp... ... stomp::.
You're all wrong - Frank and Hank will play Enter Sandman live from the 50 as the Hokies run on to the field. Frank on guitar, Hank on vocals. Hilgart (bass) and Keane (drums) are the touring members because they just flat-out look the part.
You heard it here first!
LOL!
Best AD in the country.
One might say he's the Master of Puppets
Sad but true.
And nothing else matters...
At least not to The Unforgiven.
Nothing live? A wrinkle, not a black hole ....
That sounds like something that someone who knew Metallica would be in Blacksburg for a secret surprise performance of Enter Sandman would say
This may sound weird but I have never been more hyped for a game, idk if it's Notre Dame or what but my god I can not wait.
Maybe my tenure as a Hokie is showing, but I really can't think of a game that eclipsed our home game in 2003 against Miami.
Being a true contender for the National Title helped. Having a team that had won like 28 games in a row as the opponent helped. Coming off that loss in WVU and the fanbase willing the team to raise their level up, and the team responding, it was beautiful.
The OSU game in Lane comes to mind as a recent game to get hyped out.
I'm hyped because I feel we can beat this team, where all the others would be excited to beat them but didn't feel it.
2005 Miami game. #5 vs #3 at night and Marcus Vick Heisman hype was in full swing..... We don't need to talk about what happened after kickoff. Also the '99 game against BC to close out a perfect season has to be up there.
I still feel like a lot of the 05 Miami game hype was forced, in an attempt to recreate the 2003 game. There wasn't so much a sense of "let's beat the hell out of them and have fun" as much as "let's do that thing we did two years ago!"
I don't know. That game was raucous. Gameday was in the house, broadcasting from the student section walkway. It was mayhem. Miami took the air out of the stadium, but the atmosphere pregame was electric.
Nah man... That game was hyped by the school to be our statment win to show the world we had emerged as a college football power. We were getting the kind of hype you see teams like Georgia and Clemson get right now and it was ESPN's second Gameday visit to Blacksburg that season. The hype was real. Campus was ready to explode
And then the game kicked off
2003 was nuts, but there will never be a more insane Hokie Walk than 2005 Miami.
USC 2004?
That was at FedEx...
Some pretty funny reply tweets to Fowler.
Its great to get this type of national hype for a big recruit game. Hopefully whatever it is is something all in attendance will want to talk about afterward.
#Sauces say Frank (the tank) Beamer will be doing this at midfield after Enter Sandman...
Then after we win, Frank proceeds to leads the victory chant...
When he finally gets home, we all will have the same sentiment...
One of two things:
Stick It In makes it return, with Frank giving a how-to for the younger fans and a refresher for the older fans during the pregame.
Or its a massive paper airplane throwing contest, whoever comes closest to poking Frank in the eye wins ECU & ODU tickets for life.
YES.
Metallica I am thinking that they may do a live-feed playing Enter Sandman. You can watch the Austin City Limits festival online anyways -
Looks like Metallica's set is from 8pm CST - 10pm CST.
https://www.aclfestival.com/artist/metallica/
Aka not at 8pm EST when we would be doing Enter Sandman.
So you're saying we'll be right in time for their soundcheck
Mid-show break to live stream Enter Sandman. Prototype dabbing anamtronic Beamer statue on stage.
Time zone goes the other way. The concert would run 9-11 Eastern.
Oh wow, I've been hopping time zones frequently lately. I guess I'm still a little disoriented.
They are doing a live stream according to a good friend of mine. "Apparently" a Notre Dame sports reporter trashed the song in a story earlier this week and Metallica's road manager saw it and contacted ABC and VT.
That is awesome if true...and one step closer to them doing it live at a game!
Seems like a good time to catch GameDay for the first time this season since I have a flight leaving San Jose at 6:45 AM, and just checked and they should have WiFi on-board with free Live TV.
The "This is Home" design changed...just sleuthing about.
Do they not know there is a 5am WWE PPV??????
toss a guy ur wwe network login so i can watch? pretty please
Damn, that picture of Coach Beamer and Fu both touching the Hokie stone is pretty powerful. Hits me real hard fellas.
What we don't see here is Justin picking up Frank so he can reach the stone!
This thread made me wonder, are we still having someone lead the "Let's go Hokies" chant between the 3rd and 4th quarters? I was at the Bill & Mary game, but I was so hammered after halftime that I have no idea.
Damn this will be my first game since the Hokie Pokie was killed. I would have forgot until you reminded me.
Yeah some dude came out there and did it but I can't remember who it was.
How drunk were you to forget Jake Grove?
Oh yeah that's right. William and Mary feels like it was last season at this point.
This guy should just cross it out in sharpie and write BAKER, that would be so cleveland.
Argh, it's bugging me that I can't remember who it was, but it was a former player. Pretty sure it was someone who was there when I was, circa 02-05 seasons.
It was Jake Grove.
Which explains why my memory kept wanting to connect it to the names on the flags behind the end zone.
name checks out
Wouldn't it be asspocketemptyowhiskey by that point?
the asspocket NEVER empties
In my heart it isn't, but it definitely was at that game.
The ass pocket was empty of whiskey by kickoff and we wound up in club seats with friends ordering beer for most of the game. Like I said, second half is a bit hazy.
Beamer on bass
Feel like this leans pretty heavily for a live stream type thing. Hope they practice it
I have a #sauce that says remote sandman is the thing.
My #sauce is someone I trust implicitly that heard it from someone who is a serial blabbermouth/gossip who allegedly heard it from someone that is tangentially involved with the operations of the stadium facilities on game days. What I'm trying to say is you can pretty much take it to the bank. #lockoftheweek
Is this you?
My dad has

Did he really just say that the Irish were not ready for the environment down in Miami last year?? If that really was the case, then there isn't anything they could have done up to this point to prepare for Lane Stadium.
He said it. And he's been using that experience to "prepare" for Lane stadium. I dont know if I should laugh my ass off, or feel offended that he thinks Miami is as tough a road crowd as we are.....
Really hope they don't try to live-stream something from Texas. I could see that being disastrous.
They'll probably have something from earlier pre-recorded in case the logistics fall through.
Yeah making it live makes no sense just do to something going wrong. It could be pre recorded and they call it live and how would anyone know?
like the Carrie Underwood Facetime call during the Brad Paisley concert before OSU. No way that was live, but it still looked authentic when they did the duet.
Austin City Limits festival (where Metallica is headlining) is being streamed live all weekend so the infrastructure is already there. I believe the headliners at these festivals will do their soundcheck early in the day before any bands start as their equipment is on the stage the entire day. My guess would be that they would record Enter Sandman during the sound check and use that footage for the game. The first act is at 1:45 EST, so they would likely soundcheck around noon so the "secret" may leak earlier in the day if they use this approach.
They have soundchecked it before - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yS49_K_ypOw
They are going to live-stream it via a connection directly through Whit Babcock's Verizon Jetpack to a laptop running RealPlayer 9, outputing to the jumbotron via S-Video. What could possibly go wrong with that?
Nah they'll use something more reliable like the ESPN3 streaming system
I didn't know VT had access to that kind of technology!
#InventTheFuture
You joke, but I'm fairly certain this is how they broadcasted the first few episodes of Hokies All-Access. I haven't seen much talk about it here, but let's just say they still have some kinks to work out.
Chris Fowler is in the upper echelon of college football personalities of all time. In my recent memory, he is at or near the top of a list that includes Kirk Herbstreit, Holly Rowe, Verne Lundquist, Mike Tirico, and perhaps a couple others.
Before you ask, Corso, Musberger, and Holtz are all holdovers from a previous generation and only Corso has evolved his role to being in the same category , but doesn't actively cover the game much anymore.
The next generation includes Trevor Matich and Mike Golic Jr. That's the list.
So, if Metallica is doing something...possibly get them to record a intro only version of Sandman for stadium use...maybe even slide into a metal version of Tech Triumph?
As someone who has never knowingly listened to any Metallica music except for the Sandman VT intro, I still hope all y'all fans get your wish.
The guys on "This is home" said it was specific to the video board, fwiw
I know we've kind of already agreed on that
Would love to see a live feed of the seismograph. Pretty sure that will get the people who don't like to jump jumping.
PUMPED
