RV Tailgating at VT

Hi all,
It's the first time I'm bringing an RV to VT football and was hoping to get some insider tips on parking, etiquette, etc.
I saw the gameday fan guide where it says

Hokie Club members who have purchased parking passes for RV's are located either in Lot 3 or 16. In order to park in either of these lots a season parking pass must have been purchased in advance. (see map)

Public RV parking is available at the Virginia Tech/Montgomery Executive Airport, University Golf Course, and Lot 17.

The Virginia Tech/Montgomery Executive Airport spaces are purchased in advance for the season. The spaces are available by 10 a.m. on Friday, prior to a Saturday game, and by 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 24, 2018 for the Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018 night game. The cost for a season permit is $350 (six home games) or $60 per game. RV owners with personal vehicles other than the tow vehicle will be assessed an additional $100 for a season pass (or $20/single game) in addition to the RV. For those who wish to store their RV here between home games (Sept. 8-Nov. 23, 2018), an additional $500 fee will apply for the entire season, or $50 per week. Parking spaces in the front of the airport terminal will no longer be available. For more information, please contact Lynnette Austin at (540) 231-9463 or by email at laustin.bcb@gmail.com.

The University Golf Course and Lot 17, accessible via Prices Fork Road, provides individual game parking. The cost is $75 per game. University Golf Course RV parking does not offer season passes.

I'm wondering if anybody has experiences with these that can give some insight. I'm not a HC member so that rules out Lot 3 and 16.
Thanks!

We have been considering graduating to RV for a long time now but just haven't been able to tear ourselves from Lot 18. I know the spots are first come first serve in the lot next to 18 and the Golf Course. Not sure how fast they fill up. I would expect quite a few this coming weekend.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

I plan on arriving in the afternoon on Friday and leaving Sunday before noon.

You should have no problem getting into the Public RV next to 18 or the course then

I hadn't really thought about RV parking much since I don't own one, but the map is illuminating. I remember when I was in school, the Stadium lot (#2 above) was where RV's parked. We referred to them as "Golden Hokiemobiles". There were always an old codger or two wandering around with orange pants with gobblers all over them down there.

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Same during my years. - late 80s, early 90s. We'd walk through that lot to get food and drinks. Everyone would invite us to stop and eat!!

Is the public lot next to Lot 18 just for RV's or can cars park there as well?

You ask an interesting question and I really don't know. Its like 80 bucks for an RV though so its not the cheapest route. I would assume that if you paid they would not care, but I am not for sure.

I am pretty sure it is RV only. I have never seen cars parked there.

It used to be a passed lot and RV. I think Lot 17. In fact if you look at the current map they just skip 17 now; I would assume to avoid confusion in renumbering them.

My experience in that lot is that you can park your car there, but I believe you have to be accompanying an RV. I parked in that lot plenty when my grandparents were tailgating there. They handled the parking pass though and that was over a decade ago, so I'm not sure what, if anything, has changed.

The Airport RV lot - You do not need an accompanying RV. Car parking is $20 a game. However, this being a big game and arriving on Saturday you may be parking across the street on Saturday.

yes you can park your car there and no you do not need to be accompanied by an RV. i parked there all 2 seasons ago as well as for the W&M cadets were charging 20 bucks for parking in that lot. that lot has hook ups for RVs for sewage and i have NEVER seen it full of RVS, usually 7 or 8 at most no matter the game. they line them on the fence first and then will give them multiple spaces. ive seen that lot get crowded a time or 2 but not sold out. that includes the OHST game and Clemson last year. its a short walk right over the creek bridge to lot 18 and wasnicks tailgate as well! this lot is also portapotty equipped on both ends of the lot. its a bit of an up hill hike to the stadium but not to too bad.

From an etiquette standpoint, if you have to empty the shitter, find a storm drain close to a Notre Dame tailgate.

And, AND, you forgot the most important part...You HAVE to dress like that as well.

Is lot 18 going to have the game on a tv?

We will have TV on all day watching Gameday and the other games. It will be packed up during the game (at least I don't think anyone is not going).

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Usually we have the game on TV as one of our group does not crowds so, he stays outside at the tailgate.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Does anyone know how the RV/parking situation is near the airport?

I contacted the airport about this and got the response:

Single-game RV parking is on a first come, first served basis with cash payment on arrival. There are four areas available. The airport terminal lot and the west-end runway field parking tickets are $75/RV (cash). If you are towing a vehicle (not having your camper towed by one) there is an additional $20 fee. The fields open at 10 a.m. on Friday for a Saturday game and require departure by 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The two areas offered by the University are the Golf Course and Lot 17. The fee is $75/RV (cash); the GC opens at noon on Friday and Lot 17 opens at 5 p.m. on Friday for Saturday games. Their fee for an additional vehicle is $25 and the vehicle must park in the same space as the RV. FYI, Lot 17 has a dump station. If you have other questions pertinent to the GC or Lot 17, you may contact the management company for those two areas, Rhino Sports, at 540-784-1957.

FYI, we're expecting a big crowd.

Much thanks!

We are doing the Airport lot on a first come first serve basis. Any idea how quickly the lot fills up?

We took our camper to the airport lot for the Clemson game last year. You can still go dump at the other lot when you leave. The airport lobby also has a bathroom you can use.

Depends on the game - You have the regulars that do have a season passes and arrive on Friday. Big games it is full up.

Thanks! We'll be there before sun-up on Friday. Here's to hoping!

Please note, the walk from the Airport RV Lot is now much longer than it was. With the airport runway extension, you need to follow the re-routed Research Drive to the Huckleberry trail and then angle back to Lane Stadium. See new maps. It a hike.

A 9 year (Holy &#@%$& Time Flies) Airport RV Lot Vetran Here -

The key info for the airport lot is this

Single-game RV parking is on a first come, first served basis with cash payment on arrival. There are four areas available. The airport terminal lot and the west-end runway field parking tickets are $75/RV (cash). If you are towing a vehicle (not having your camper towed by one) there is an additional $20 fee. Most everyone is in the 'West End Runway', they aren't really putting people in the airport terminal this year. There are a number of reserved spots and folks like me that leave their RV for the season but they usually have room for everyone. The only game that I've seen it maxed out with RVs was for Ohio State. Your friends/cousins/neighbors can come and park in the lot or close by for the $20 (might be $25 day of the game this year). Airport lots have 0 amenities and are just large mown fields with some gravel 'roads' that are kept clear for people to come in and out. You park on the grass between gravel strips. If you are looking to have power be sure to bring a generator and gas. There are porta potties at each end of the lot.

There is typically a mix of Hokies and Opponents and folks are always walking the lot and dropping in on neighboring tailgates. If you decide to come out stop on by, we are along the back woods about 1/2 way down the very last row. We are the family compound with a couple of 5th wheels, a couple of class Cs and one little hybrid with tent ends (That's me). Also be sure to stop by the Clubhouse Tailgate guys (Silver Airstream along the road) they put on a great spread are super friendly and hold a Wild Turkey 101 Communion 1 hour before kickoff.

As smittyvt said the walk to the stadium is longer this year. It starts in the RV Lot goes along the fence line of the extended runway and connects up to the rerouted huckleberry trail before the 1st new traffic circle on Southgate drive. You then walk the trail to the stadium along Southgate drive. It used to be a 2 beer walk but now its an easy 4-5 beer walk.

Edit - We really like the 'late' checkout on Sunday, especially after a night game.

Thanks for the insider tips, exactly what I was looking for.

"Wild Turkey 101 Communion 1 hour before kickoff."
As an ordained pastor of the Universal Life Church, I will hold a Wild Turkey 101 Communion for all present one hour before Hokie kick-offs from this day forward. Bless us all.

Where can I fill up the camper's fresh water tanks? I'll be driving down 81S. Ideally somewhere close to Christiansburg.

Ideally, fill up at your house before you leave. Best guess, get off at the Troutville exit and try one of the Truck stop fuel stations there.

Not an option for this trip, unfortunately. I was hoping someone had a reliable place off 81, like a specific truck stop you mentioned.

If you are paying to RV in the airport lot they allow you to fill up water from the hose bib in front of the airport terminal.

BIG, if true

Yup - It's true. The hose bib they are using this year is to the left of the doors as you face the building. There is usuall a garden hose there or you can attach your own hose.

BigWillis - I hope you found a spot on Friday. We got in and settled tonight around 6:00ish. Finally got the last ice and gas run done. The Airport RV Lot is as full as it was for Ohio State.

I got in at 5 after hitting nasty traffic on 81 round Roanoke. Lot 17, golf course, and airport are all slammed full so I've made myself a home with a slumtown that formed in a parking lot in S Main. Everyone here is pretty amazed at the number of RVs. Must be the long weekend getting people out. I'm all good though, food, gas and ice are all a walk away. Thanks for asking! Enjoy the weekend everybody.

Kinda surprising to me. My parents used to park in the airport lot for free and they were usually the only ones there. That was only 4 years ago.

Did anyone on the board bring their RV down for any games this season? I'm curious if the RV parking info in this thread still applies. A family friend is looking to bring their RV down for the PSU game. Thanks!

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

We did several games.
Parked in the lot right next to lot 18.

Parked, when they came thru, payed the $75.
Partied.

This is going to be great for the ACC.

Great, thank you!
