So I need someone to explain this whole thing to me.
I know that Clint Hurt (defensive line coach and in charge of recruiting) was named in the Miami sanctions and has a two year "show-cause" penalty.
What does that mean? Is Clint Hurtt banned from coaching for two years? Can he not recruit for UofL? Is it like a super probation, where he's under extra scrutiny?
More importantly... How will this affect Louisville recruiting? Are they in trouble with their current class? Any specific recruits that VT and Louisville are tussling over that VT may be able to pull in now?

It would be very hard for Hurtt to be hired elsewhere, because the show-cause penalty follows him wherever he goes, so the hiring institution must "show cause" as to why it should not be subjected to the penalty he has earned.
I'm still confused... Do these punishments apply JUST to hurtt or everyone on staff? If it's just Hurtt, does that mean he doesn't get paid for two years? and he can't recruit AT ALL until spring 2014?
The penalties should only apply to Hurtt. The penalties have an obvious detrimental effect on the program as a whole, thus punishing Louisville by proxy, but the NCAA can't punish the other coaches. Statements in http://www.courier-journal.com/article/20131022/SPORTS02/310220062/Tom-J... seem to back this up. The fact that he is UL's recruiting coordinator and he's now banned from recruiting through the spring is a pretty big hit. Regarding pay, he's still getting a salary, but it's frozen at its current level.
I would think that if the penalty was "You cannot be paid for 2 years" a lot of this stuff would stop pretty friggin' fast.

The usual power there is the show cause itself because most institutions wouldn't be willing to take the additional sanctions. Typically when someone gets hit with this they end up with no salary directly from an NCAA institution until the show cause penalty is over because they are fired or already out of work as schools anticipate this kind of penalty hitting these people. I am surprised that Louisville is willing to let him sit out until Spring 2014 for what is his primary responsibility on that staff.
