Virginia Tech Beats Ball State 73-64 -- The Requisite Analysis

Dunk play GIFs.

Virginia Tech advanced in the Charleston Classic by way of a 73-64 win over Ball State. There's plenty to discuss, and Marcolini will dive in after the tournament. Until then, the only thing that matters is this dunk.

It's the perfect trio of effort: Nickeil Alexander-Walker with the ambitious defense, Justin Robinson with the setup, and Ahmed Hill with the two-handed slam.

The Hokies face Northeastern on Friday at 11:00 AM.

Basketball while I am working is great when my boss is not working.

I love a good nap. Sometimes that's all that's getting me out of bed in the morning.

Best part about everyone else teleworking due to the weather

Ask me no questions, and I'll tell you no lies

dont even have to face alabama again, man im gald we decided tech is a bball school.

Ummm...our proud Bass Fishing team would like at least a nod here.

Unfortunately, Bama would have helped our SOS. Not sure Northeastern will do that. They certainly don't have the "name recognition".

I preferred a revenge game against Bama.

There is a good chance by year end that Northeastern has a better record and better RPI than Alabama. Northeastern will likely win the CAA this season and be in the NCAA tourney.

I saw your comment in the game thread after I posted this. It sounds like Northeastern might be better than Bama in that regard.

Even so, I don't think a non-conference slate with games against Washington, Penn State, and Northeastern is going to impress anyone. We need Purdue to win today and we need VT to take care of business. I will never understand the cupcake-heavy scheduling. If VT plays cupcakes and wins, the NCAA selection committee doesn't care. If they play cupcakes and lose, the NCAA selection committee will kill them for it. Likewise if they play great teams and win, it's a huge boon while playing great teams and losing doesn't cost much if anything.

If we win 10 games in the ACC it won't matter. Alabama without Colin Sexton is hot garbage. Northeastern will probably end up with about 23-25 wins. It'll be a top 100 RPI if we win. Slight chance it ends up being a top 50 RPI win.

Always choose joy.

Win totals don't matter to the selection committee. You can win 30 games, but if you aren't playing and beating good teams, they won't care. I agree that Alabama likely won't be any better than Northeastern in the eyes of the selection committee, I'm talking about our non-conference schedule in general. It's embarrassing and if we ever want to have higher goals than just making it into the dance, it needs to be improved.

In basketball there isn't really anything higher than making it to the dance. Once you're in anything can happen. That is what is so magical about it. Even a 16 seed can beat a 1 seed! You just need to avoid the 8/9 seed.

Also, if we win 30 games, the committee would take notice because that's a lot of ACC wins.

Yay for GIFtory! Where have you been this month?!?!?

Hey, now, we outscored Pitt 8-7 last week in the third quarter!

I love winning easily while playing far from perfect basketball. Lots of teaching opportunities for Buzz.

When I first saw this I thought that 5 just missed a layup and Hill had great crashing instincts, but then I realized 5 was a baller and wouldn't miss a layup.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

HAHAHAHAHA, OK......

Now I'm second guessing myself.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

You shouldn't, Robinson has done this on many fast breaks with Hill trailing behind with and without a defender present. His glance back when he receives the pass is all you need for proof. Those two know what they're doing and as usual some grump on the internet does not.

That's what I thought. Cheers.

We beat a team we're supposed to beat, feels sooo good.

Fugazy

Man I hope this version of Hill is here to stay cause he's been big time

But more importantly how was Buzz's sweater game?

I can imagine no more rewarding a career. And any man who may be asked in this century what he did to make his life worthwhile, I think can respond with a good deal of pride and satisfaction:
β€œI served in the United States Navy"

Buzz must have hired a personal stylist or something because he's been GQ as fuck lately.

I truly never thought I'd see the day basketball gave me more enjoyment than football

We play Northeastern at 11am on ESPN2 today. I might actually catch some on lunch. Keep it going.

I just love how this team runs. 5 is off to the races before NAW secures the steal, Med and Wilkins right behind, and KJ gets down there too. Ball St. just watched. Usually the player that turns the ball over will hustle to try and make up for it, but he just watched.

You almost have to feel bad for the Ball St guy, facing a 4 on 1 fast break

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Anyone know if the commentators will be the same as yesterday's game? I want to tweet @ them some #FreeNolley education...maybe get some on air discussion going

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Not sure, but my first guess is yes. Usually these tournaments have the same two guys for all of the games.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Yeah, great. Maybe those guys will actually watch the game today instead of yakking over good plays and generally ignoring the on court action.
And that guy with his Fow-ulll thing. Fingernails on a chalkboard.

3rd year in a row we've executed the off the backboard ally-oop dunk.

2016 against Duke - Allen to Clarke

Last year against UNC - JRob to Med (play is at 51 seconds)

Just shoot these plays into my veins. I absolutely love how much fun this team has when they play.

Legit question. Does that count as an assist or a missed shot/rebound?

all about the scorekeeper... but if it hits the backboard outside the square I think they give it the assist.

VT is a basketball school and Syracuse is a football school...strange days
