What to Expect from the Herd

I have watched as much Marshall football in the last three seasons as I have Virginia Tech football, so I have a pretty good grasp on how their coaches coach and how their players play at this point. I don't post forums often, but I figured this might be a good time to do just that. Here is what you can expect from Marshall on Saturday and what Tech must do to keep the bowl streak alive.

Marshall head coach Doc Holliday embodies two principles that we became very familiar with under Frank Beamer: play strong defense and emphasize special teams. The Herd have ridden those two principles to an 8-3, 6-2 record this season.

The Marshall defense is currently ranked 7th (!!) in the S&P overall ratings which is first among G5 teams. Their defensive rush and pass S&P ratings rank 18 and 19 respectively. The Herd have been the beneficiaries of a healthy defense for the most part this season (sounds wonderful, doesn't it?), and that will be the case on Saturday. The Herd can rotate two defensive lines and linebacking corps and not see much drop off between the first and second units. Their secondary isn't as deep and is undersized despite the amount the of success that they've had this season. Look for VT to throw a lot of fades on Saturday.

As previously mentioned, the Marshall special teams have also been solid this season. They don't give up a lot of yards on kickoff and punt returns (they actually angle their kickoffs to the sideline and manage to keep it in bounds and out of the end zone, so it would be ideal for the Tech returner to fair catch the kickoffs to ensure the drive starts at the 25). Kicker Justin Rohrwasser is solid from inside 40 yards going 13-15 from that range but is only 1-5 from beyond 40. If the Tech defense can keep drives outside of the red zone, they'll have a good shot to get off the field and not give up any points. The Herd special teams also have three blocked kicks on the season, although they have all come in the last three weeks.

The Marshall offense has had a pretty average year. They were expecting to return literally everyone from last year's starting lineup except one offensive lineman, but when supposed-to-be fourth-year starter Chase Litton unexpectedly bolted for the NFL Draft, the Marshall staff was left scrambling for a quarterback. They managed to sign grad transfer Alex Thomson from Wagner College who Phil Simms believes is/was an NFL prospect. Thomson then proceeded to lose the battle for the starting job to dual-threat redshirt freshman Isaiah Green who has had a solid year. The Marshall offensive line only gave up 8 sacks last season and returned most of their two-deep which has helped Green a lot, who has completed 56% of his passes at a 14:9 TD:INT ratio. Green's biggest issue is that he throws off his back foot almost exclusively which has led to several overthrows and a few interceptions. I expect the Tech defensive backfield to have a couple good opportunities to intercept a pass on Saturday. Green suffered a knee injury back in late September and hasn't shown the same mobility since returning, so I don't expect Marshall to run him a lot.

Green has a plethora of receivers to throw to. The big name is Tyre Brady. Brady was a transfer from Miami who has had a phenomenal two seasons in Huntington. In 11 games this season, he has accumulated 64 receptions for 890 yards and 9 touchdowns. On a lot of those catches, Green basically closed his eyes and chucked it in the direction of Brady hoping he would come down with it, and Brady did. Last season, Brady had 62 receptions for 942 yards and 8 touchdowns. Those stats included a stellar game at NC State where he had 11 catches for 248 yards and a touchdown. The Herd also have speedsters Marcel Williams and Willie Johnson (Sammy Watkins' cousin) to throw to along with solid possession receivers Obi Obialo on the outside and Nick Matthews in the slot.

The Marshall running game has been something I have envied all season from a Tech fan's perspective. Running backs Tyler King and Keion Davis both eclipsed 800 yards last season, and watching the two of them is a lot like watching Kevin Jones and Lee Suggs respectively in terms of their running styles. They both break a lot of tackles and have great breakaway speed. Both have been banged up recently and haven't played in recent weeks, and I'm not sure who will be playing on Saturday; might be both, might be neither. If neither are a go, expect Anthony Anderson and Brenden Knox to get the carries for Marshall. Anderson is mostly used in short-yardage situations, very Brandon Jacobs-esque. Anderson is a load to tackle at 6'2" 240 lbs. Knox entered the season fourth on the depth chart at running back and didn't have any stats until the Herd played Charlotte a few weeks ago. Knox proceeded to run for over 100 yards on 22 carries and a touchdown. Two weeks later against FIU, Knox ran for 109 yards on 19 carries. Whoever Marshall ends up running next week, Tech is going to have to be ready because they're all capable of having a big game.

So, how does Tech win this game? I expect the Tech offense to have a tough time sustaining drives on this Marshall defense, so Tech is either going to have to hit a few big plays or win the field position battle by getting good special teams play and/or forcing turnovers to get some points on the board. As I mentioned, I expect a few interception opportunities for Tech, and it's important that they take advantage of those opportunities in order to put their offense in a favorable position. If the Tech defense can keep the Herd out of the red zone, this will also give the Hokies a good opportunity to win given how Marshall's kicker has performed up to this point.

I really don't know what to expect out of this game. On one hand you have a Tech team coming off an emotional win over rival UVA leading some to believe there might be a letdown. On the other hand, Tech is playing for a bowl streak that would be the longest active in the country if continued on Saturday. Which of those things will come into play more on Saturday? Your guess is as good as mine. From the Herd's perspective, playing in Blacksburg in front of plenty of Marshall fans (a lot are going) against a team with a bigger name than anyone they'll play in a bowl game will be plenty of motivation for them. The Herd are also staring a 10-win season in the face if they can beat Tech and win their bowl game. Will playing a game that they didn't know whether or not they would be playing until three days ago affect them positively or negatively, though? Again, your guess is as good as mine.

One thing I'm sure of, though, is that I am glad this game is being played. When I decided to attend Marshall three years ago rather than VT because in-state tuition to Marshall was much cheaper than out-of-state to Tech, Marshall and VT were not scheduled to play each other. Now, here I am, 3 years later, planning my trip from Huntington to Blacksburg this weekend in the most unlikely of circumstances. Let's have a damn good weekend, ladies and gentlemen.

My guess is that they will run for a season high rushing total in the second half against VT. Other than that, I have't seen one snap of theirs this season.

Two thoughts:

First:

and Second:

Sorry, I assumed you watched VT football this year.

I did, but I'm pretty sure I blocked some of it out. But I now have a weird twinge when people say "3rd quarter".

They ran for 319 on ODU.... I would be surprised if they got that against us honestly... But their next best total was 204 against Midd Tennessee.. I would bet a large sum of cash they rush for more than that against us on Saturday.

Hard to put too much weight on that total vs ODU when VT ran for 318 against them (I think the game outcomes may have been different, but I can't remember for some reason...).

Not saying I completely disagree that they can hit 200 yards against us, I just wouldn't bet on it.

They had 5 rushing and 1 passing TDs in 42 - 20 win over ODU.

#Let's Go - Hokies

From what I've seen of their schedule, they are 1-3 vs teams with winning records, including losing by 17 to NC State. With the 1 coming this last weekend when they kept FIU from winning their division. They didn't play what appears to be the 2 best teams in C-USA (UAB and UNT).

They've certainly taken care of their business and are a definite upgrade from ECU. Given how solid they've been, I'm surprised that VT opened as a 4.5 point favorite.

Don't give up on your dreams.

The Marshall offense was riddled with injuries for the Middle Tennessee and Southern Miss losses. At least one of those would have been a win if Isaiah Green could have played all 60 minutes. Their offense will be a lot more healthy against VT than either of those teams.

Great.

Whew, if they had to play their backup QB against us we wouldn't stand a chance

they are 1-3 vs teams with winning records

Let's not check's VT's record... Oh, VT is 2-5 and were outscored 260 to 173 points.

So double the wins!!

and less than double the losses, so you can bet the house on this one.

yeah, VT's record isn't much better, though overall VT's opponents are significantly better. Marshall played 1 P5 team and lost by 3 scores.

I'm not declaring this to be a cakewalk. I'm simply pointing out that Marshall's 8-3 record needs to be viewed in context. To play the classic SEC card... Marshall wouldn't be 8-3 if they played VT's schedule and their stats wouldn't be as impressive. VT is going to have to come out a play to win.

I hate to break this to you, we don't have a winning record. So what you really said was they are undefeated when playing teams with a losing record. Like we have.

BUT we wont have a losing record after Saturday's game ... (I hope).

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

Based on this seasons history, I would bet we won't see many fades on Saturday.

wait are we about to lose to marshall?

No.

I'd say the talent is even. Comes down to the coaches and motivations really.

Based on?

Let's try numbers.

24/7 recruiting rankings:

Year VT Marshall
2015 29 75
2016 42 51
2017 26 87
2018 24 74
Average 30.25 71.75

That's not even close.

I understand this team has looked bad this year but to assume that the talent is even would be a huge mistake.

A shortcut to remember here is the 2018 College Football Team Talent Composite . We're ranked 31st and Marshall is ranked 84th by full roster. A more "visible" way to compare us is the average recruit ranking. The average player on our roster was a mid/hi 3* recruit (86.05) when we signed them. Marshall's average player was barely a 3* recruit (80.85) by composite scores.

Good info.

I suppose we would have to know the distribution of average player rankings the mean and standard deviation to know what 86 vs. 80 means.

You've already got a team rank and a star rating. The number value is standard for anybody that already follows recruiting (and is superfluous for anybody that doesn't).

I didn't provide a mean or standard deviation for the "star rating" either. That exists, but I'm not sure we need that calculated to understand it.

I'm not assuming. I have watched both teams. Marshall is laden with experience on defense. Their freshmen and sophomores aren't as good as Tech's freshmen and sophomores, but their juniors and seniors are better than Tech's freshmen and sophomores, and their juniors and seniors are the ones that play. Their top two running backs would start at Tech. They got a couple diamonds in the rough there, and they lucked out by getting Tyre Brady from Miami, but Tech's receiving corps as a whole is better than Marshall's. Their offensive line is also more experienced than Tech's, but Christian Darrisaw and Zachariah Hoyt are better than any underclassmen offensive linemen that the Herd have. It's moreso a case of having more experienced guys than anything especially on defense.

I'm thinking execution and support staff

If dude gets behind our secondary on Sat - I'm definitely breaking out "Help me, Obi Obialo, you're our only hope".

Marshall has had a good season. This is their bowl game. Outside of their actual bowl game. If we don't share their intensity and passion to win this game, we will lose.

So what I'm hearing from most of the people here is that if VT comes here with anywhere near the same intensity they approached the UVa game, they should be able to manage.

After ODU, I don't think they're going to show up here sleepwalking.

If I had a quarter for every time I said this AND WAS WRONG! I would have enough money to retire early and start donating to the Hokie Club as a Platinum Hokie.

This tech team has played down to its competition more often than any of us would like to admit and there have been several good examples in our history which could be used as cautionary tales and yet WE KEEP DOING IT!

I hope the Hokies win. I think they are capable. But I stop short of assuming they won't sleep walk into this game. History tells us they typically do.

Onward and upward

I agree - they need to show up to play.

Both teams are going to want this win, and we needs it. Keep the streak alive, and earn much needed practice!

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

I say we go by FPI and don't even bother playing the actual game. That would have been wonderful this year.

2026 Season Challenge: TBD
Previous Challenges: Star Wars (2019), Marvel (2020), Batman (2021), Wrasslin' (2022)

Unless they are expecting us to continue the emotional high from beating UVa into well executed play, I'm not sure how we can be expected have a 70% chance of beating anyone this late in this season.
