I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but Football Outsiders has its F/+ ratings up and we come in at #16. That's a result of the #72 offense and... the best defense in the country. http://www.footballoutsiders.com/stats/fplus
How great is that?

The rankings are based on scores through October 5th, so that's including UNC, but not Pitt. Our defensive F/+ score through the first six games was +29.2%. For comparison's sake, last year's National Champion Alabama team had the top defense with a defensive F/+ score of +27.8%
107th ranked special teams.......
I've been waiting for these rankings to get posted. I had a sneaking suspicion we'd rank at the top of the list. Coaches have a lot of positive things to take on the recruiting trail this week.
Bill Connelly's rankings have VT at 12, with the #3 defense and the #99 offense. Sounds about right.

Just a quick update, 2 weeks later these rankings have our D at a crazy 32.2%. 2nd highest D is Bama at 26.3. Our O is also slightly improved at -0.8% and #63.
Here's our actual stats, not adjusted for anything. Offensive numbers suck, defensive numbers are glorious.
Edit: Not to take away from dmet's post. Good find! Just providing the actual stats as a basis for comparison and just a general update.
Those Defense numbers...

See, this is more like it. I recognize these numbers from, oh, say, 2004-2011.
Anyone know where we rank in terms of turnovers (margin)? I am sure its out there on the interwebs, but I'm not sure where to start looking. I have a co-worker who is a Mich St Alum that is tossing around the claim that the Spartans have the best defense in the country based solely on the yards per game allowed and I need some ammo. Thanks.
here's some ammo for you. they have played W Michigan, South Fla, Youngstown St, ND (lost that one), Iowa, Indiana and Purdue. None of those teams are known for their offense this year.
We shut down Alabama's offense (206 total yards) obliterated GT's O (which consistently gets 400+ yards) and handled dynamic teams like Marshall, ECU and Carolina who all employ up tempo spread offensive schemes.
you could also use this
"The Hokies 27 sacks are tied for the most in the nation and theyve racked up 13 interceptions this season, good for third nationally. Overall, one out of every 5.6 passing plays by Virginia Techs opposition ends with either a sack or an interception by far the best rate in the country. Two other ACC teams, Clemson and Miami, rank second and third, respectively, on that list."
That is exactly what I'm looking for.
hope it works. Glad I could help
To answer the original question , we are tied for sixth in turnover margin at +9
perspective...as in amazing. 1 in 5.6 really highlights the dominance.
(A-HEM cough cough cough )

Am I'm reading these rankings correctly? I see the Hokies coming in at #8 while last week we were #16.
Yea. They also have ASU at 6 and Utah in the top 20. I'm gonna take the rankings with a grain of salt.
ASU's beaten Wisconsin and put up a ton of points on USC's defense which has played well in every other game. Their two losses were to Stanford and ND, which are respectable losses. ASU may actually be good.
Also why they dump the top and bottom computer rankings in the BCS.
It helps make the average more realistic, in case one particular method is particularly favorable or unfavorable to a specific team. It's the same with Olympic scoring. Gotta offset the Russian judge!
I predict that our offensive numbers go up after tomorrow's game but our defensive numbers drop slightly..here's hoping that they don't but I'm concerned about Kyle and Brandon out with Exum possibly not being ready.
Probably right, but even more reason to run the ball and limit the amount of time that Duke gets to throw on our D.
And.....dial up a lot of pressure on Duke's QB.
