WBB vs Longwood

The Lady Hokies play the Longwood Lancers on Sat at 2 PM in Cassell. Game will be on ACC Network extra. Longwood is 1-8 on the season and probably will not provide much competition. But, what do I know? I thought Ohio State couldn't make 3's. This post is more for practice for me as I figure out how to do these and whether I want to try to do this regularly. So if you have any suggestions, let me know. The comments below do not include stats from their last game, a 33-35 loss to UNCW, because I can't find them anywhere.

Starters(I think based on minutes per game)

Dayna Rouse: No. 21; 6'0" Junior forward/guard. Plays 30.4 minutes/game. Shoots 57.7% from the field, 0-4 on the season from 3, 82.4% FT. Contributes 5.3 rebounds and 10.3 points per game.

Mallory O'Dell: No. 25; 6'1" Sophomore forward/guard. Plays 32.2 minutes/game. Shoots 34.7 from the field, 18.2 from 3, 52% FT. Contributes 8.5 rebounds and 8.4 points per game.

Stephanie Guihon: No. 3; 5'6" Sophomore guard. Plays 30.1 minutes/game. Shoots 31.3% from the field, 22.2 from 3, 72.7% FT. Contributes 2.6 rebounds and 10.3 points per game.

Ciarah Bennett: No. 5, 5'2" Senior guard. Plays 25 minutes/game. Shoots 39.1% from the field, 33.3 from 3, 78.6% FT. Contributes 3 rebounds and 9.6 points per game.

Kristina Antonenko: No. 24, 5'10" forward. Plays 27.1 minutes/game. Shoots 44.9% from the field, 0-2 on the season from 3, 63.2% FT. Contributes 6.9 rebounds and 7.0 points per game.

Others with significant minutes:

Milou Vennema: No. 2, 5'11" Freshman guard(that's what their website says). Plays 16.3 minutes per game. 0-21 from the field, 0-16 from 3, 50% FT. Contributes 0.9 rebounds and 0.1 points per game.

Khalia Hall: No. 11, 5'8" Redshirt sophomore guard. Plays 16.1 minutes/game. Shoots 39.6% from the field, 34.4% from 3, 55.6% FT. Contributes 1.1 rebounds and 6.8 points per game.

Jada Russell: No. 4, 5'7" Junior guard. Plays 14.3 minutes/game. Shoots 22.9 % from the field, 22.7% from 3, 50% FT. Contributes 1.3 rebounds and 3.7 points per game.

Akila Smith, no. 13, 5'11" Freshman; Kate Spradlin, no. 30, 5'6" Redshirt Junior; Ashlee Jones no. 15, 5'8" Senior; and Jessica Belcher, no. 14, 5.5" Sophomore. Play limited minutes(4-6) per game. Interestingly, Smith is the only player not listed as playing guard on their website.

I really don't see Longwood providing much of a challenge. On the season, the Lancers are being outrebounded by 7.7 and outscored by 16.9 per game. Probably a team that is only on the schedule because they are in Virginia. I hope the ladies remember the football game against ODU and take this one seriously. I would hate to see our great season(so far) marred by a bad game against the Lancers.

The 22-1 Hokies Basketball teams play the 2-20 Longwood Lancers and UMES Hawks. I'm guessing this is the widest disparity between the 2 VT programs and their last 2 non-conference opponents.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Thank you for doing this, good job!

Great read! Appreciate the "leg" work

Lady Hokies moved to 13-0 today with a 93-39 destruction of Longwood. Its almost like the ladies decided they needed to score more and give up less than the mens team the day before. Regan Magarity outrebounded Longwoods entire starting five by pulling down 18 rebounds to go with 14 points to lead the Hokies to an undefeated OOC Schedule.

How are they not ranked? Teams with 3/4 losses are ranked ahead of them.

Weak schedule. Keep winning in the ACC and they will be ranked. Big test coming up next with Miami at Miami. Win that and they will be ranked. May sneak in this week; but teams above them are not losing.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

I'm sorry if you have 4 losses you shouldn't be ranked ahead of a team with 0 losses.

I did not see any four loss teams on the ap poll. Two teams with three losses have lost to Notre Dame and UConn, Miss State, Miami and Syracuse. All teams in the top 25. Our best win is probably Villanova, which does not even receive votes. We might deserve to be ranked; but we have not proved it yet.

Started the season high in the rankings like 10th, moved up to 7th and its losses are to #4 Maryland, #7 Baylor, #11 Oregon State, and a 90-85 Overtime loss to Drake the day after losing to Oregon State in their Thanksgiving tournament when their all world guard fouled out at the start of OT. They have wins over Clemson, Purdue, and Temple.

The Hokies started the season close to 50th in most rankings and are 13-0 but their only wins vs upper echelon teams is Villanova and Ohio State. In years past the win over Rutgers would have meant more but not this season. Their other wins have 6 or 7 280th or lower in the rankings. Perception also plays a big role. Last year 11-2 OOC, 6-10 ACC, year before, 13-0 OOC, 4-12 ACC, year before that 12-1 OOC, 5-11 ACC. Trend is too much for voters to ignore.

That said, I think they have the size and talent this season to finish above .500 in ACC play and will go to the tournament this year for the first time under Kenny Brooks. In years past they, much like the mens teams got dominated in the paint again and again in ACC play. Magarity finally has the right help in Baptiste, Taylor, and others. I also think the long run in the NIT did this team a world of good in terms of experience with post season play that will benefit them this year. That and this is kind of a down year for the ACC overall with only NC State, Syracuse and Miami currently ranked ahead of the Hokies.

Notre Dame and Louisville are ahead of us too, but I agree with everything you said here. With Duke, UVA, and FSU losing a lot there's a good chance for this team to finally do well in conference play. And the ACC carries a ton of clout in the women's game- the team nearly played themselves onto the bubble last year and UVA was a #10-seed after going 8-6 in non-conference play and with only a couple of really good wins.

So another case of teams who start out ranked high stay ranked despite poor play.

Miami(24) loses to Central Michigan; and Iowa(16) loses to Michigan State(21). There may be room for either Iowa State or Tech to move into the top 25. Maybe both.

Hokies #26 this week. Only Miami bumped from the top 25. Double bad news: we're not in and our next opponent is no longer a top 25 team. Still will bring our strength of schedule up. I watched them lose to Central Michigan. We can beat Miami, even in their house.

We have kicked the ball through the end zone all season and now twice we give them the 40 because dumb mistakes
