Buzz confirms Landers Nolley and Chris Clarke will not be playing this season. #Hokies— Henry Skutt (@henryskutt) January 5, 2019
Figured we could use a new topic on it so you won't have to dig through all the old discussion. If Henry or someone else on staff makes an official post, I guess you can just delete this or merge it.
Anyway...UGH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to 2019!

This is carry over from 2018... 2019 gonna be better! Right??
Yes, it's carryover. This is still the month of Checkuary 2018.

In regards to the Nolley thing, I have many things I want to say, but I think they are adequately summed up by...
The NCAA is full of shit.
Will Nolley be eligible for a redshirt for having not played this year?
He DAMN WELL better!
it will depend on how the NCAA treats the test score issue. If they rule against him, he would lose the year as a partial qualifier. If they determine the score is now a non issue he should be able to redshirt
Did they change the rule for partial qualifiers? Mo Alie-Cox was a partial qualifier for VCU and he was allowed to redshirt his first year
he wasnt ruled eligible so how does he lose a year of eligibility? Not how it works but he should still have 5 to play 4 IMO
That's not how partial qualifiers work. Redshirt year 1, then 3 to play 3.
Both Clarke and Nolley are eligible to redshirt during the 2018-19 season. It is unclear if either will be cleared to return to the program in the future.
whatever that second sentence means

The article says that, but I'm guessing that's just spitballing.
Take a peek at this, and it's even on TKP. 4 years to play 3, after this season. No redshirt.

Does he regain the year lost by graduating in 4 years or completing 80% of degree work, including the year sat out? Based on the post it appears so for a non-qualifier so assume a partial gets the same deal.
I wonder if the NCAA has ruled on Nolley and cleared him, but due to it being so late Buzz decided it was best to just redshirt him.

I'm pretty sure the Nolley thing is the punishment for UNCs cheating scandal.
Does anyone know what Buzz's exact words were?
The NCAA should get out of the eligibility business regarding academia. Their beauracracy leads to decisions based on appearance, politics and anything but fact. This situation was botched by the NCAA
The NCAA just accidentally the whole thing.
Does anyone know if we can be confident that Nolley will play for VT next year, as opposed to some conjecture about transferring that I saw on TKP few weeks ago? Losing him for this year sucks, but I sure hope he's playing wth us next year.
I don't have first hand knowledge, but the issue is not related to Vt in any way so transferring is a waste of time. If there is still a NCAA issue it would follow him. In reality next year Vt will have a tremendous amount of turnover in basketball so staying this year would make the most sense assuming the eligibility issue gets cleaned up.
Point is - transferring solves nothing and appears to be a pure rumor At this point so I would be confident he will be here next year simply due to the circumstances.
How does his scholarship money work? Does he get to be at school on his dime? At schools at all?
Partial qualifiers can be on athletic scholarship, so there are no issues there.
Fuck the NCAA is all I got
Landers is redshirting according to my #sauce in the program.
That's good. I assume that means there was some
Sort of ruling that he was a partial qualifier which would make the redshirt applicable.
What does the starting 5 look like next year.... Bede, Horne, Clarke, Blackshear, Nolley ?
Thats still a solid starting lineup and that is assuming NAW leaves early. Exciting times ahead for buzzketball.
Clarke and KJB returns are questionable. Both could be making Euro money. Especially if Buzz leaves.
But assuming the best, that lineup is short a 2-guard. I would think you would want:
1: Bede, Harris/Gordon
2: Wilkins/(McNeilly?)/Harris/Gordon
3: Clarke, Miller/Gilutekin (sp?)
4: Nolley, Horne
5: KJB, Horne (2019 post recruit)
Feels like we could use a transfer, at any position, just to pick up some experience. If CC returns, that's huge. Otherwise, we likely are starting 2 or 3 guys with zero experience.
Whoa, whoa, whoa!

Back up there a sec!
KJB would be wise to stay another year and finish his degree. Euro money will be waiting for him regardless of when he leaves, but having that degree to fall back on after basketball is ideal. Plus, there's a chance he could backdoor his way into NBAGL or NBA role player if he continues his strong season and builds upon it next year.
KJ and Robinson both graduated in December. They've been announced as "grad students" in the starting lineup since then, and both have the graduation cap embroidered on their jerseys.
And get that free grad degree. More $$$ for the future
I don't know if I've ever heard of someone leaving college basketball for Euro before their eligibility is up.
Happens quite a bit, even at Tech. Malik Mueller left Tech to go back home to play professionally. He is playing in Germany for the ProA Hamburg Towers. His team won its league title in 2016 and a German tounament title in 2017.
Robert Krabbendam was another that played three seasons at Tech before going back to the Netherlands to play. He has carved out a 12 year career over there so far.
Going into the wayback machine, I think Terrence Oglesby from Clemson (08 maybe?) left early off of a good Clemson team to go pro in Europe. Nick Calathas left UF to go pro in Greece I think. Every year there's a couple people who declare for the NBA knowing their future lays in Europe too.
yeah but when those guys left, they were not in line to play a major role @ VT
That might be but Clarke isnt likely to gain much traction in Europe with another year and its a year where he could be earning six figures versus not getting paid while staying at Tech. Limited years left to earn money considering he is almost 24 now.
Thought for sure Clarke is only 21
He turns 23 tomorrow (took more google searching than I thought honestly).
KJ would be traditionally leaving, but not necessarily for the Euro. I'm sure he sees himself as a NBA player.
CC would be "not returning." We aren't sure how all that went down, whether he is invited back, whether he felt fairly treated, etc. and he may see himself as a NBA player too.
That's correct. He was ruled a partial qualifier. I don't think you'll see Clarke ever again at VT.
you can see Clarke at VT today. or tomorrow. just not playing in a basketball game unless its at mccomas.
It never gets old. Speaking of which i need to do some catching up.
Just bought the preorder game for my wife for Xmas.
It's a shame bc with those guys I think we'd be legit Final 4 contenders. Now I think we'll have to put together a special run. Maybe JRob goes all Kemba.
I think what we have is still talented enough to achieve some lofty goals but knowing those 2 aren't coming back means we have a razor thin margin of error now. A key guy gets injured or is in foul trouble early and we could be hurting real quick. So basically, the same VT Basketball we all know and love. One year, I swear, we'll have depth. I still believe!
As I was walking out of Cassell, after the game, I overheard someone saying that Clarke had been seen playing/shooting in McComas wearing headphones and not talking to people. I guess that means he's still enrolled; not sure what it would mean for the future. Take that for what it's worth. #nosauce

I wonder if I could convince him to join my intramural team in the spring....
*writing game plan*
1. Pass Chris the Ball
2. Win
Foolproof
3. Profit
4. Beer
I played against both Logan Thomas' basketball team and also Robert Brown's basketball team in intramurals and they were filthy.
My little wife spiked on Deron Washington in a volleyball game against his and his mother's rec league team. Once.
My dad has diabetes.
Well played good sir. Well played.
