Hokies wrestling are 2-2 in duals this year and are coming off a solid showing at the southern scruffle last week. This weekend is the Virginia duals that has a strong Field of Arizona state Lock Haven LOLUva Old Dominion Oklahoma Kent State Chattanooga and of course your Virginia Tech Hokies

Hokies wrestling beat Chattanooga today 35-4 they face ODU tomorrow at 2pm. Winner faces the winner Of UVA\ASU for the championship at 7pm tomorrow
Absolute domination.
Mekhi Lewis, y'all gotta see this kid wrestle.
He's the real deal
Crazy energy and pace. I kind of feel bad for McFadden though, he isn't ever going to get a natty with Hall and Valencia in his bracket.
I'm still disgusted he lost his match against Mizzou because of back to back ify hands to the face calls
I think Mitch Moore is finally starting to feel good because he has been on a tear the last two weeks. Won 5 of last 6 by fall.
2 in the first 20 seconds of the match
Tech dominates ODU 31-9. Only dropping two matches. The team really needs to find a solid guy for 125.
Big time win for BC Laprade. ODU forfeited at 197.
Yep Odu guy was 6th in the country
Hokies vs Hoops for the championship later tonight
*Hoos but always appreciate a dig at them.
Thanks for keeping us up to date!
Not being a jerk, but camas are your friend.

I know what commas are, but unfamiliar with camas🤔🤔🤔
Great call MacGruber!
I have no idea how that corrected to "cama"
Cama police, arrest this man
Is the competition tonight broadcast on the internet?
Track wrestling has a streaming feed
Anybody have a passcode?
Was going to ask the same thing! Trackwreslting link not as good as watching live, but it's something.
Mitch Moore with a huge upset/pin! This kid is going to be good!
The Moore brothers are beasts. Excited to see what they accomplish at Tech. Brent beat Kevin Jack at the ACC championships last year and Mitch is wrestling great right now. Hopefully Nick Moore continues the family tradition and becomes a Hokie.
Hokies up 18-5 rn!
Hokies win 37-5
Put another point in the Commonwealth Cup Tech column.
Doesn't count. Only the LOLUVa-Tech dual meet counts. This was a coincidental mtg (since there was no guarantee that both teams would advance).
Hokies beat Pitt 27-6 in ACC dual match. Match of the night was in the 133 lb class with #13 Korbin Myers upsetting #2 Micky Phillippi 5-3.
Should have been 7-2 but the head ref wasn't that good
I really need to catch up!
We have been domination duals recently, excited as conference play gears up, our wrestlers are focused.
Tech beats #24 LeHigh 23-9. Solid showing all around.
I am worried about McFadden at 174 this year. It's going to take time to get used to the weight. Next year he has a shot, but probs not winning a NCAA title with Valencia and Hall in the same bracket.
Tech dominates dook to the tune of 40-3.
#GivingOutSpankings
Dominated doesn't do it justice for how awesome we were. We left a path of destruction.
Tech v UNC tonight. Myers just blew a huge lead...
Refs giving away matches too. Uneasy start before tech gets to their bread and better weights.
Lower weights have wrestled very conservatively, and well, not good.
Mehki Lewis comes through with a major!
way to go ZZ! major...take a swipe to the head for the team
Sleigh getting worked by a freshman currently, hopefully Sleigh pulls it out.
It comes down to Billy Miller, this is the worst i've ever seen Tech wrestle.
Sounding like football
That was some sorry wrestling by Sleigh. Not sure what's wrong with him but you deserve to lose if you are going throw out weak shots like that.
We lost to UNC. Sorry wrestling by some of the big guys like Myers and Sleigh. Miler has been a huge disappointment all year. Worst wrestling i've seen from Tech in a long time. Seemed timid and lackadaisical. Not going to win the dual title, but maybe we can pull out the tournament title again.
That was bad.
What a disappointing performance. Just when I thought we were gaining some momentum. Couldn't win a single swing match and Sleigh and Miller to cap it off was just bad wrestling.
The only guys I feel comfortable with are Mekhi and ZZ. Even McFadden seems to be struggling to finish matches this year.
Even though McFadden has been winning it feels like he is struggling at 174. Today he started strong for a period and a half then was visibly gassed. It's kind of been his MO when I've gotten to see him wrestle.
Tech v Princton rn. I have a feeling it's going to be another long night for the Hokies.
Zavatsky absolutely dominated by Mark Dean. Big upset to start the night...
I hate watching Miller wrestle. This duel is a L. Hopefully some individuals get some wins.
You sure about that?
Yea, it's going to be pretty lopsided. Prata did much better then I thought he would though.
Didn't end up lopsided, the ZZ loss really hurt though
way to go billy!
Thanks Primus I have not been keeping up this year!
We should've taken this one... great effort in the comeback attempt. Mehki looked real good!
Hokies dominate UVA 30-6
With one of the two losses being our backup wrestler at the 197 lb weight class.
He has heart
So is that the meet that determines the clash point?
ZZ gets the good guys started off beating #3 seed for NC State!
Strong Sleigh ride puts us up 6-0! Impressive returns in that 2nd period.
Billy with the major!!! 10-0. Impressive showing for the heavywt.
State takes next 3 weights... tied at 10. C'mon Hokies!
Take down with 2 seconds left spoils BC Laprade's solid performance against #4 in the country... down 10-16 and we need to take the last matches to have a shot at the ACC title
Mehki and McFadden win their matches to tie 16-16 but State wins on criteria 16-17.
Mehki was so close to getting major at end of his match which would have been the difference.
Disappointing end to the dual season. It frustrating that it feels like our best two wrestlers are in the same weight class and McFadden is wrestling up.
I'm not sure what to expect at the ACC tournament... We need ZZ, Mekhi and McFadden to all win to have a shot. One of the lightweights is going to need to pull some upsets and get some consolation points for us.
I don't see a great team performance at NCAAs but I am curious to see how Mekhi performs on the big stage with a jump in competition. He is really fun to watch.
McFadden's struggles at 174 is confusing because it's a more natural weight for him to be at.
He gets gassed easily
It appears that way but it doesn't make logical sense to me why he would get gassed more easily at 174 than 165. I would expect him to have more energy since he isn't cutting as much weight.
Guess its harder to take down people at 74 so it takes a lot more energy to finish a take down
He certainly has struggled to finish takedowns this season. I thought he'd have a quickness advantage that would help overcome the strength difference but it doesn't seem like his style has translated well at 174. At this point I question if he would even be close to the same wrestler at 165 as he was last year.
Wrestling is brutal on the athletes and VT has seemed to have a lot of wrestlers burn out over the course of their careers (Zach Epperly, Solomon Chishko, Cody Gardner, and Kevin Norstrem come to mind). I hope that isn't happening to McFadden and he is able to raise his game to become our first 4x All American.
Chishko had a string of injuries that really affected his ability to compete.
On the podcast Robie said McFadden seems to want to go heavy on the head and hand fight a lot more. He needs to get to his offense where he is really comfortable. The other adjustment to going up a weight class is he is no longer significantly longer than his opponents.
http://theacc.com/news/2019/3/1/acc-receives-league-record-37-qualificat...
ACC record for qualifiers this season.
Hokies are most likely looking at 7-9 qualifiers
ACC Wrestling Tournament is in Cassel this Saturday. Here is the schedule.
All rounds will be on WatchESPN but I encourage anyone near Blacksburg to attend.
Here is where our guys are seeded - top 2 get a bye into the semi finals:
I think we have a shot at the tournament title which would salvage a rather disappointing ACC dual season with 2 losses. In order to win the team title, Lewis, McFadden and Zavatsky need to hold serve as the #1 seed and win their individual titles. I then think we need at least 2 other guys to make it to the championship and hopefully 1 can maybe pull an upset like Brent Moore did last season over Kevin Jack. Go Hokies!
More info can be found in the TSL write-up on the tournament
NCAA seedings were released today. Upon a quick look through the brackets, I don't think it's going to be a good tournament. Bracket Here
ZZ has a legit chance to be a national champ. However, he will likely face Rasheed of PSU in the semi's. I honestly think everyone will lose in the first round excluding 165-197. If they make it past the first round BC is staring down Nolf of PSU, Myers would have Suriano of Rutgers, Mitch gets a stout guy from Michigan, Mekhi is looking at Marinelli in the quaters, McFadden is looking at Valencia in the quarters, Sleigh could make it to the quarters but then has Kolin More of OSU,
Not a great draw, a top 10 finish will be had in the wrestlebacks. I hope I am very wrong haha
PSU has a legit chance to have 6 national champions, which is just gross.
To be fair a top 10 finish is almost always made in the wrestlebacks. I would say last year's performance was more of an anomaly than the rule. I'm looking forward to seeing what these guys can do when the lights are on. I'll be attending the tournament so I hope they can pull some big upsets.
I get what you're saying but at the same time... it's nationals. You are almost certainly going to face elite opponents in the quarters or semis. Obviously we aren't favored in 4 of the matches, but we don't have a single wrestler with an impossible first round matchup either.
It will be interesting to see how it goes this year as I do believe that seeding the entire field will change things and probably reduce some upsets. If the entire field wasn't seeded, I would be especially hopeful for Mitch Moore and Korbin Myers to get better matchups... but it's always possible they'd have just drawn worse ones.
Just watched Blees and Meyers lose in the 2nd round. Blees went to 4 OT and Meyers was semi smoked. We are in 9th at this time.
Myers hurt his leg, looked like his knee, mid way through the match after looking good early. Couldn't get an escape after that.
Suriano isn't exactly chopped liver either. Dude is an elite wrestler and could easily win a championship. Myers looked locked in before his injury but it would have been a huge upset.
McFadden.
If you wrestle for Iowa or PSU you get on espn. Saw nothing else. There were 8 mats going.
End of day 1. 8 wrestlers moved on. Miller is out. McFadden was on the wrong side of a major upset.
Last second hands to the face calls, they'll get after ya.
Shouldn't have came down to that in the first place. But refs shouldn't decide matches.
Lewis takes down #1 seed Marinelli at the end of the 3rd by points!
Mekhi takes down #1 Marinelli. That was the best match I've seen in a while. Huge upset on what was a mum session 3 so far. Let's get ZZ in the semis!
Lewis win jumps Hokies into tie for 7th overall
Big time Mekhi!
Awesome win for Mehki... loved his reaction right after the win!
Dang it ZZ!
He's 1-4 against foster so I'm not surprised
That kid has ZZ's number. Had total control of him most of the match. Wish he could have gotten a different matchup but hope can wrestleback to All-American status to finish a great career.
End of the first sessions of the day for Tech. On paper it wasn't great, but not awful. Sleigh, ZZ, McFadden are still alive in the Consi's. They all need to win at least one more match to secure AA status. Mekhi had an amazing match and is on to the Semi's. He has secured AA status as a R.Frosh which is an amazing accomplishment.
Myers, Mitch, Blees, and LaPrade all bowed out today.
At the time of this post, VT is at 10 in the team score.
How are the 4 remaining expected to do in their next matches?
Looks like Mehki's got the #4 seed Evan Wick of Wickonsin who won by MD, 7pt dec, and pinned the #5 seed. Tough opponent but Mehki is smart, tough, quick, and a Hokie!
Mekhi will face Wick of Wisconsin. I would peg this a toss up, but if Makhi goes out and does his thing he can win. I wanna pick Mekhi for this one.
McFadden faces Lujan of UNI. I believe Dave can beat him, but he really hasn't looked himself all year. It'll be a tight one, but my gut says Dave will drop it.
ZZ has Venz of Nebraska. Another toss up. When ZZ is focused he can beat anyone, but he seems to get in his own head a lot. I think ZZ comes out pissed off and takes this one.
Sleigh has Warner of Iowa. I really don't know anything of Warner, but he is a 5 seed and from Iowa so he's gotta be stout. Sleigh seems pretty focused and ultimately gave Moore a run, but I think Sleigh drops this one.
At this stage really every match is a toss up. I can see Tech going 4-0 next session, but could very easily slide the other way. Realistically I think they are looking at 2-2.
Mekhi has a funky wrestler coming up in Wick ZZ is 0-2 against Ventz Sliegh goats warner
Welp I need to drink
Lewis got a vote of confidence from Jordan Boroughs. He has a legitimate shot at making the finals.
Mekhi motherfuckin Lewis!
Letsss goooo Lewis! A huge win and gotta get that Hokie Natty tomorrow night!
3-1 for this session. Huge win for Mekhi, he will face Joseph of PSU in the finals. He could actually win. Marinelli wrecked Jospeh in the big 10 finals, and Mekhi looked real good against marinelli. Mekhi just needs to watch the inside trip.
It was great to see Dave dominate someone finally. Excited to see how it pans out tomorrow.
VT currently sitting in 11th for the team score.
Tomorrows schedule:
11am
ZZ will wrestle for 7th
McFadden will wrestle in the consolation semis and then either for 3rd or 5th
7pm
Mekhi will wrestle for VTs first individual wrestling championship!
Go Hokies! Go Mekhi!
My voice will not survive if Lewis takes it home.
McFadden with a last second reversal to grab 5th place
Man ZZ was an amazing wrestler, he could just never piece it together for the NCAA's.
They are starting with heavyweight tonight, so Lewis is the 7th match. If its anything like last year, I wouldn't expect it to start before 8. Top 4 team spots are already locked in.
Hokies are just ahead of Rutgers for 10th.
Ashnault is a beast.
Lewis coming up next match... c'mon Mehki bring home the national title!
The 157 match before was probably the most boring wrestling match I have ever seen. The 1 seed from PSU just manhandled the 2 seed.
Go time!
Lets Go Hokies chant going on
SO CLOSE!
HALF AN INCH FROM A PIN!
WOW!!!!! Near fall then amazing defense at the end of the 2nd.
WHAT A SAVE FROM A LAST SECOND TAKEDOWN!
Mehki Lewis First Va Tech National Champ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Mekhi. Motherfuckin'. Lewis!!!
LETS GOOOO
NATTY BABY!!
8 SEED MEKHI LEWIS TAKES DOWN BACK TO BACK CHAMPION FROM PSU.
can see Lewis in the UFC as a welterweight in a few years
Great VT contingent in the crowd.... WAY TO GO MEHKI!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
congrats Mr. Lewis!
Hell yeah. What a win.
Wow that was something else. Just electrifying! First time watching!
This deserves its own thread from someone with wrestling knowledge. You could hear the HOKIES chant around the building during his interview.
Mekhiiiiiiiiiiiii!!! I've never watched wrestling before tonight but that shit was dope. Let's Fucking Goooooooo!!!
I knew after a great redshirt season He was gonna be a star I'm fucking crying right now 😢😂
That was amazing! I thought he was going to get that pin. Could you imagine if that had happened?! Still amazing!
Legs all day for this picture... mom and dad with front row seats to witness history!
A couple seconds later Mehki is smiling while laying on top of Joseph knowing he's got it wrapped up
He should be named the tournament's outstanding wrestler. Beat the top seed, the four seed, and then crushed the two-time defending champ.
Hell Yes!
In case you didn't see this, he did. Well deserved, too. That young man had an incredible tournament. In addition to the difficulty of winning as the 8 seed, where he had to go through the 1, 4 and 2 seeds (with the 2 being a two-time defending champ, as you mentioned), but he went 6-0 through that meatgrinder without giving up a single takedown. Absolutely phenomenal.
That was amazing, knew he would have a shot given his quickness and ability to score. Kept his distance and didn't allow the guy get a chance to get inside for the trips. Hopefully this is the first of many and his freestyle career also follows suit as it would be awesome to have an Olympian from the Burg.
They showed the top 10 teams, Tech didn't even make top 10?
Hokies finished in 11th by 1 point
If Rutgers had lost one of their two finals matches we would have been 10th. They won both but I'll still take it since we got our first national champion.
Tech swept the acc awards: coach, wrestler, and freshman of the year.
awesome! thanks for posting
