WARNING: VT vs. UVA not on ESPN

Because people had trouble finding the GT game, the UVA game will be shown on Raycom Sports in the ACC broadcast region (East Coast). If you are not in this region it will be streaming on ACC Network Extra or through cable on ESPN College Extra.

If you are in the DC region it will be on Fios Channel 6 aka Fox5 Plus (formerly My20). If you know what channel it will be on in your area please let others know in the comments.

Why this isn't the 7 pm slot of ESPN Super Tuesday instead of Kentucky-Georgia is beyond me.

ESPN knows football season is over right? Two top 10 teams, instate rivals....

For folks who have Cox Cable in Northern Virginia, the game will be on My20 (Channel 20.)

Five star get after it 100 percent Juice Key-Playing. MAN

Digital Antenna is 20-1. It's the channel that keeps showing Pitt games over VT games in this area.

Thanks! Great tip as I will be in the area for business and planning the evening around the game.

Not available at all via broadcast in NC. Watch ESPN only for us

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

I was really mad at first that it wasn't on in NC at all, but WatchESPN is how I watch most VT basketball anyway. I rarely turn it on a TV and sit down and watch. I'm always watching while I wash dishes or bathe the spawn.

Man, just when I thought I was done with posts about Raycom affiliates . . . Feels like football season, ya'll!

Here's the affiliate list:
http://theacc.com/sports/2018/12/21/MBB_acc-raycom-VT-UVA-1-15-2019.aspx

(NC State at Wake is also a Raycom game that night, so it's splitting the affiliates, hence the game not being on tv in NC.)

For the state of Virginia, it looks like the same stations you would tune to for ACC Network/Raycom football games - NBC 29 in Charlottesville, CW stations in Roanoke, Richmond, and Tidewater. Also, the previously mentioned WDCA 20 out of DC. (I always remember it as the UPN station from those days.)

EDIT: They changed up the Virginia stations in the past two days. As of 10:45 AM on Tuesday, these are the stations you can see it in Virginia:

Nova (DC market) - WDCA 20/Fox 5 Plus/the channel formerly home to UPN
Hooville - NBC 29
Richmond - CW Richmond (65 over the air, 13/513 on Fios)
Roanoke/Blacksburg - Fox 21/27 (WFXR) **this is a change**
Tidewater - CBS 3 (WTKR) **this is a change**

If WatchESPN doesn't work in your area, it's also streaming on the ACC website (and I'm assuming the app too).

Personally, I'm a little annoyed because it's forcing Flash to 10 PM, so I'm hoping the game doesn't go too late and mess with my DVR.

Thanks for the link. If I don't see my city (NYC) on that list, does that mean it won't be blacked out?

In theory yes, check your local listings though. I've seen a lot of people on twitter saying that official affiliates list is incomplete and NYC should be getting one of the two raycom ACC broadcasts

Thanks, did you mean to say "incomplete"?

Yes I did, fixed that in the post

CW stations in Roanoke, Richmond, and Tidewater.

I'm not sure if there has been an update to the affiliate list since you posted, but for Tidewater Hokies, the game will (now) be on the local CBS affiliate (WTKR) and not the usual channel for ACC Network/Raycom broadcasts on the CW (WGNT).

They did change the list since I posted it. It has much more variety across Virginia now. Updating the above post now.

The OP mentions this but I just want to point out that in DC the game is not on channel 20 (at least not on FIOS).

Its on channel 6, which is "Fox 5 Plus".

Hokies United l Ut Prosim

If you get the channel through over-the-air means, you would have to tune your television to channel 20. Unfortunately, some cable systems like to move local channels to different numbers.

Not being in the DC market anymore, I can't keep up with the branding. I'm still trying to not call it UPN 20. (Branding for that channel really got screwed up after the CW merger.)

What does ESPN, ESPN2, and ESPNU have airing that's better than a primetime top 10 matchup?

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

SEC basketball. It just means more.

If its not Duke or UNC in the ACC, ESPN really doesn't care.

We have a top 10 matchup in primetime and ESPN passed on it. This would be a prime candidate for a showcase ACC Network game, and the vast majority of the country is going to have to stream it. Just another reason why this Raycom deal was so bad.

With that said, I'm glad this is happening with the game in JPJ rather than in Cassell.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

It's not that ESPN passed on the opportunity for a top-ten showdown. This game was tabbed for Raycom even before the season started. (proof)

I don't know how the TV contracts work, but I imagine there's a selection process between ESPN, Raycom, and the group of RSNs, and Raycom must have given this game priority.

But even then they still do joint broadcasts sometimes. I know UNC-Duke and the ACC tournament are available on both Raycom and ESPN. If ESPN wanted to air the game they probably could have worked something out.

Yes, but in those cases I'm sure they've come to the agreement before the season starts. At this point, with Raycom Sports losing ACC broadcast rights at the end of the season, I don't see them budging a single bit.

Where Raycom screwed up was putting two games on at the same time.

Warning for anyone with a streaming-based cable option, I tried to tune into the UVA-Clemson game this weekend with youtube.tv, pretty sure it was CBS, and got a "This game is not available through internet streaming" message. A primary network channel was blacked out for two hours on a paid-for service, could see it happening for this one as well.

Same for DirecTVNow customers - AT&T and Disney are fighting, so you can't use your login for WatchESPN.

If you live within the blackout area, you can't stream this game through ESPN. If you live outside the blackout area, you should be able to stream it without a login.

Or you connect to a vpn outside the blackout area of the east coast of US and watch it on ESPN app.

Well, yes. But if you're inside the blackout area, you should be able to get it via antenna, and a VPN is not cheap for a connection fast enough for streaming HD video and can be confusing to set up for some of the less-technically-inclined people here. Not the first thing I'd recommend to someone.

Just download a VPN app on your iphone. Speeds usually are plenty good.

Optimum word is should. I am lucky that I usually can pick up a Raycom affliate, NBC 29 out of Charlottesville because they bounce their signal off a tower on Massanutten Mountain outside Harrisonburg. But I can't pick up the local ABC affiliate that is in Harrisonburg on my antenna, go figure. If it isn't on a ESPN channel or on the Raycom Affiliate and its on Watch ESPN/ACC network/RSN, then most likely it will be blacked out for me and I have to use the vpn.

But if you're inside the blackout area, you should be able to get it via antenna

Haha, that's bullshit. Where I live in King George, I can't get *anything* without a high-gain directional antenna, and only a couple of stations at that. Yet I'm still in a blackout region. These arcane 20th century blackout rules are such bullshit, and need to go.

Nope. DC area couldn't get the VT game the past two games because Pitt had the ACC affiliate channel in the area.

ExpressVPN isn't that expensive and I'm able to stream HD from a server in Chicago to Africa.

Any recommendations for VPNs?

First of all, CBS is kind of a pain in the butt with streaming because they want you to sign up for CBS All-Access.

That being said, the UVA-Clemson game was a Raycom game (and had nothing to do with CBS, it just happened to be aired on the same station that airs CBS programming in your area), so lack of streaming probably had something to do with it being syndicated and the local affiliates don't get the streaming rights.

Direct TV, folks. Cutting cables is all well and good, but I get what I pay for and don't have to convolute to do so. No, it ain't free, and I negotiate with them every six months to keep costs down, but I've more than once read people's trouble "streaming" games when I could watch them on my choice of several regional channels. I realize I'm not helping anyone here, but every time I read threads like this, I reaffirm my choice of TV provider.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

I despise DirecTV. Unfortunately they're the best provider, but their customer service is awful. Luckily my apartment building gives free DirecTV and they're so unorganized that they don't realize they gave me one of the top packages for free (instead of the one without ESPN that I should be getting).

Rip his freaking head off!

I don't understand how everyone thinks DirecTV is the "best" provider. IMO, they're a step below all the major cable companies (Comcast, Time Warner, Cox, Charter... and yes I've had all four plus DirecTV at one point or another in the last 12 years or so, so this is coming from first-hand experience) in customer service, even before considering their significantly higher price, especially if you're already paying for broadband internet anyway since the added expense of "bundling" cable to an existing broadband account is actually somewhat reasonable unless you're getting one of the gigantic channel packages.

The only "pro" I can see in the DirecTV column is that they're available anywhere, since all you need is a satellite dish and electricity, meaning you don't need a terrestrial data connection at all. I switched to DTV since (a) it was effectively the same price as bundling TV with my Shentel internet, (b) I heard nothing but bad things about Shentel (and experienced numerous issues in the year they were my only option for broadband, including near-daily 15-minute-to-2-hour outages for MONTHS before they finally replaced the line running to the townhouse), and (c) DTV was running a deal for free NFL Sunday Ticket for new subscribers. Even then, I still regret switching to DTV after all the dirty tricks they tried to pull when I moved.

DirecTV was great until AT&T took over. Their customer service was excellent before, but now it is pretty bad. And now I seem to have glitches every now and then too. This is my first experience with AT&T and I have not been impressed.

My experience with DTV came before the merger. If it's gotten worse I'm glad I dropped them when I did.

I didn't realize it was possible for Comcast to be a step above anything short of watching paint dry.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

Yes, Comcast is awful. So are all the other telecom companies that have a geographical monopoly over their territory. However, there is a hierarchy of ineptitude, and in my experience Comcast is fairly low on that list, right around the same spot as Cox. At least with Comcast what you see is what you get. Most of the time, you can set it up yourself, and once you get it set up it generally works, until your 1-year discount is about to expire and you call to complain and they offer to extend it for another year. It's a shitty process, but it works.

I've had DTV for at least 15 years and have no issues with customer service, but you do have to be proactive when it comes to rising costs. I use my phone to actually call someone up (yeah, really!), then do whatever I have to do to get someone on the line I can understand and who understands why I'm calling. Yeah, it sometimes takes a little while to get satisfaction, but I generally always do. Folks today might be surprised what a little voice to voice contact can accomplish, but I know I'm pissin' in the wind on that front since the younger generations are seemingly afraid of actually talking to people on the, you know, telephone?

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Or in the case of this younger generation member's point of view, realize there are options out there that don't require so much hassle to get what I want, and therefore I use those instead. These companies have gotten away with making this process so difficult for too long in my opinion, and I'm not required to give them business if there are alternatives on the market that aren't trying to rip me off quite as much. Has nothing to do with some voice phobia. Though I will admit that I'm more easily flustered on the phone than any other form of communication.

Though I will admit that I'm more easily flustered on the phone than any other form of communication

That's because there's usually a dumbass on the other end.

Not from the youngest part of the crowd, but I legitimately just hate talking to people in general and talking to someone on the phone is by far my least favorite method of communication. Face to face, then text/email/chat which also helps to leave a trail, then phone.

Their phone customer service can be pretty miserable as well. But their introductory deals are impossible to beat, especially if you like the NFL. At one point in the past I threatened to drop them with 1 year left on my contract to use Hulu Live, they offered me the final 12 months of my deal at $21 per month, with Sunday Ticket included.

For my fellow Millenials, yes you actually have to talk to someone. But I'm willing to trade spending 30 minutes talking to someone for about $400 per year and a better package.

Rip his freaking head off!

I shouldn't have to get on the phone to beg to not be screwed by a TV company. I pay $35/month (I'm grandfathered) for YouTube TV. No hidden fees, no shenanigans with calling on the phone, no bullshit. It's not about calling people, it's about getting what I want for a good price. This isn't a "millenials are entitled" debate so don't try to twist that to fit your narrative. At the end of the day its cost. It's really that simple.

I shouldn't have to get on the phone to beg to not be screwed by a TV company.

You shouldn't, but such is life in the 2010's unless you switch to a streaming provider like you have. Though I wouldn't call it "begging", more like "hollowly threatening".

In any case, I imagine it won't be long before the cable TV providers change their ways to better compete with the streaming services. The only question is, whether they'll be good changes or bad changes.

The streaming companies will eventually start acting like the cable TV companies honestly.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

Not so fast. The main reason the cable companies have gotten away with charging a fortune is because they were the only game in town. Your options were either "the one cable company in your area" or rabbit-ears.

Now they actually have competition in the form of these streaming services, so they can't continue to charge whatever they want since they're being undercut. The way this could go wrong is if the Net Neutrality regulation gets cancelled, since they'll have the ability to throttle the various streaming services, therefore giving themselves an effective monopoly again. The next few years will be interesting to watch.

You do it your way, I'll do it mine, but I'm not worrying about getting the games or the other entertainment content I desire. If you don't want to pay for it, I get that. I do have to call people once a year or so to keep my costs in line, though, and it saves me money and keeps me receiving what I want, but this doesn't piss me off or ruin my day or anything. Not everything in life can be resolved with a tweet or a text.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

I'm 26 and am happy to call to get what I want. All these companies will happily screw you over through email, but they tend to give you a lot more over the phone.

Rip his freaking head off!

Not everything in life can be resolved with a tweet or a text.

Just stop. That's not the point of cord-cutting. People don't cut the cord to avoid calling people. People cut the cord because it works for them. If paying two-three times what I pay for the same content just so you can get a basketball game here or there works for you, then go for it. I think I have may have not gotten one game since I cut the cord two years ago. That's well worth the savings, and not being tied to a contract, in my opinion.

I have no idea why my username is VT_Warthog.

Arkansas blew a 24-0 lead in the Belk Bowl.

I don't tweet or text to get my digital entertainment either, but I also pay less than DirecTV would be. So I really don't see your point.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

My point is that I'm an old crotchety asshole who likes his DVR and the wealth of programming I get from DTV. I'm a technophobe, and don't want to watch anything on the computer or a telephone. I have figured out a way to get DTV for less than most people I know spend on their smartphone service, and can't speak about twitter without disdain and disgust. It's largely a generational thing, I get that, but I don't have to like it.
It isn't just me that notices the "younger" generations seem unduly and increasingly disdainful of phone conversation and yes, that irritates me too. Netflix seems cool, but I'd likely get it in addition to, but not in lieu of DTV. So, I tilt at the windmills.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

Since single smartphone plans start at $50/month from the major carriers, and adding a second line takes that to $80/month, plus the cost of the phones themselves, it's not terribly surprising that you're paying less DTV than most people pay for smartphone service. That's an apples-to-oranges comparison.

Yeah, I know, but I was just making an observation about what people feel is necessary. Not having a smartphone does give me more discretionary spending money, though, and DTV is much more useful to me than a telephone that so many cannot, or will not, live without. I feel like I get good value for my money. And for the record, I do have a tracfone for emergency or travel use, but no set plan. I have used it for texts when necessary on the road, but use it for actual conversation almost exclusively and never have to buy a new one unless I break it.

Y'all please forgive me for being argumentative, I'm not in a good mood today and tend to take it out on whatever pops up. No excuse, but it is today's reason. I'll check out on this conversation now, since I obviously add nothing but an irritation factor to the discourse.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

The money savings far outweight missing a game here and there, of which I've only had an issue maybe once. I'll gladly miss a game here and there to stay out of a contract with Dish or Directv.

YoutubeTV - far and away the best cord-cutting option that I have found and I have tried them all, local channels to boot. No contract so I'll prolly drop it after the tourney as we'll be up at the lake a bunch in the summer and pick it back up come football season.

Only if you have greater than 3 mbps internet speeds. Technically my zip code may end up being in the area where youtube tv says it is available but my only available internet source due to my rural location leaves me out.

I've done Sling, Hulu (albeit very limited), and PS Vue. Current I'm using PS Vue and I'm pretty happy with it. Haven't tried Youtube yet. Why do you consider it the best option?

I'll chime in here. It's the first option I tried out and have loved it. Local channels wherever you go, unlimited DVR space, you can set your favorite teams and it'll record a game whenever it's broadcast, on demand movies, and no contract.

I have YTTV for sports and it was by far the best when I last compared. I get all of the ESPN networks including SECN, NBC Sports, CBS Sports, FS1/FS2, Fox Sports SW (I'm in TX), plus the local channels. It also gives access to WatchESPN for things that are digital only.

I can't recall correctly but it was on FS1 or CBSsports channel on Charter/Spectrum. That might explain why you couldn't find it.

For the LOLUVA game, it should be on the local airwaves on WPCH PeachtreeTV. Not sure what channel that is over the air but its channel 07/707 on Charter/Spectrum

funny how a lot of places & roads are named some form of "peachtree" something.

Then again, I do laugh every time I drive by Trickum Rd. So, the humor is there I suppose 😂

There are at least 71 Peachtree something roads in the metro area, including:

Old Peachtree Road
Peachtree Road
New Peachtree Road
Peachtree Street
Peachtree Creek Road
Peachtree Lane
Peachtree Avenue
Peachtree Circle
Peachtree Drive
Peachtree Plaza
Peachtree Way
Peachtree Memorial Drive
Peachtree Walk
Peachtree Park Drive
Peachtree Parkway
Peachtree Valley Road
Peachtree Battle Avenue
Peachtree Dunwoody Road
Peachtree Industrial Boulevard

I'm not even from Atlanta, only visited twice (once for a Bama game and once for a vacation of sorts), and I still remember Peachtree Dunwoody Road. Also, you missed "North Peachtree Road" and "Peachtree Boulevard", which form a fairly small triangle with Peachtree Road.

Edit: I had to go look at the map, and it's even more ridiculous than I remembered. Peachtree Blvd splits from Peachtree Road at one point, and they roughly parallel each other before "Road" intersects with "Blvd" again. And then shortly past that interchange, Peachtree Blvd becomes Peachtree Industrial Blvd.

I don't understand how anybody knows where anything is around there.

Lived in Atlanta for a couple of years in my early twenties. Worked at the corner of Old Peachtree Rd and Peachtree Industrial Blvd.

I also lived by one of the about 8 sections of road on the east side named Rockbridge. Also near where Deshon Rdturned into Deshong Rd.

So basically, without GPS, the only way to know your way around is to be from there. Because it's almost impossible to learn.

I'm hacking this bitch from vipbox or firstrowsports, screw ESPN I'm not giving them my watch time for this bullshit.

Looks like I'll have to stream the game (or erect and antenna, hope for signal from Hagerstown). I have FiOS, howard county.

This means Cory Alexander will be announcing, doesn't it?

It's hard enough to listen to him call a Tech game that's not against Virginia.

Tickets are still available for relatively cheap, considering the magnitude of the matchup...

If you are a comcast user, the game will be on channel 812 in HD, and you should have access with just the basic cable package.

Northern Va Comcast is showing up on chl 810 in the onscreen program guide.

We have Dish and the game is not showing up in our guide. Normally we'd just stream it on the watch espn app but I'll be coaching little league bball at 8pm tomorrow night. Does anyone know how soon after the game ends you can replay it on the espn app? Can you start game from the beginning that is currently in progress? Help!
