I know today we had a lot of top notch talent in to watch this game. I can only imagine some of the things that were said. I just hope the recruits look at it optimistically and wanna come here to help this offense since we already have a nasty defense

Moot point. Look at Blanding and Brown.
I hope Nnadi saw an insane defense and a crowd that doesn't give up on its team until the bitter end.
I saw what appeared to be a 75% filled stadium on television? Was that the case in person?
from the looks of the west and south sides yes... the NEZ stayed pretty full through the game...and I was in East so I don't know what that looked like...
That certainly does not impress recruits!
student sections were phenomenal today. it was full and loud the entire game. much less throwing of paper airplanes than of late. the empty areas of the stadium were top of south, top of east on south half, and some of west
There was plenty paper airplane throwing in East. Thankfully the wind stopped them from actually going anywhere though.
I wish I could get a GIF of someone throwing an airplane into the wind, only to have it spin around and nail them in the eye.
Sorry, I guess my mean streak is still settling down after yesterday.
Where I was in the west the stadium looked pretty full except for the south end zone which is always 75% full.
Yeah, the only sections that looked empty were the usual student ones in the south. Just seems like everyone would rather squeeze in like sardines, rather than sit/stand comfortably in their own section.
I would say to any offense recruits at the game today "You could start here next year if you commit to the Hokies".
Tim settle said he had a good time.
I think if we keep winning, won't matter.
LOLUVA gets top recruits, and look how their season has gone so far. I can't imagine anybody could be in Lane Stadium and not want to play football there. Regardless of the game today, Go Hokies!
The stadium was loud to the end.
From the way it sounded on TV, the stadium was loud at the end. It seemed pretty quiet the rest of the time.
this was a great look
Not too many years ago even those seats were hard to come by! Where is the student body that is supposed to be filling Lane?
I think most of the upper south is lottery tickets that students use and them move to east or north. The game experience just isn't the same from up there.
Thats exactly what I did my freshmen year, got south endzone for 3 or 4 games and just sat in east or north. Had a friend print off an extra copy of their ticket and just use that when inside the stadium.
My friends and I, as well as pretty much everyone I've ever talked to, did this as well. South End Zone sucks, and I mean SUCKS from an atmosphere perspective compared to East or North. Maybe if everyone who had tickets there actually sat there it wouldn't be so bad, but the fact of the matter is freshman year a lot of people legitimately acquire East tickets and then their friends who end up with South sneak in with them to sit there, so South will never fill unless it is switched to non-student seating where the people who get those tickets actually intend to sit where they're supposed to.
They could do what Penn State does - each gate is separate for each section of the stands. Your ticket can't get you into a different gate. At least I think that's the way it works. I don't know anyone that has ever tried.
I can tell you East stand is always packed. The south end zone has always been like that from students sneaking in to the east side. I know I did that. Upper south is such a crappy view with no energy
We're kidding ourselves if we think that this doesn't hurt. Obviously recruits know that losses are gonna happen, but a win just makes for such a more enjoyable experience. And I'm sure all the offensive recruits must just be dying to come play for Loeffler.
Interesting - I don't recall Loeffler suiting up yesterday and throwing into double- and triple-coverage all day.
I do recall seeing receivers wide all day open as a result of a very good offensive scheme designed by Loeffler. Perhaps you missed that?
I've been very vocal on here that I don't think Logan is a good QB. Loeffler really does not make the best calls when it matters, though. We do not score in the red zone and were atrocious on third down. Those two things are a direct result of bad playcalling. Speaking of, did you see that stat that they showed over and over again about how we're the second worst in the ACC at third down conversions? Or perhaps you missed that?
I think it's valid to expect more of Loeffler than where we are currently.
i think that's unfair. He's having to clean up an epic mess of all messes. He's only had 8 games. I think everyone is overreacting. I love LT3 because he shows a lot of heart and he fights hard and is obviously the leader of this team. But he is a tight end, not a quarterback. I don't think it's fair to expect more than a 6-2 record out of an offensive coordinator who is trying to get a bunch of tight-ends-playing-other-positions to unlearn years of terrible coaching and execute a brand new offense. He's doing what he can but cleaning up the mess that has been left over the last decade+ is going to take some time. As somebody pointed out on another thread, excluding Thomas, the most productive players we have on offense are the youngest players who don't have to unlearn old habits from bad coaching under the previous staff. I don't think we're ever going to have a flashy, fast paced, high flying offense like the Oregons of this world, but give Loeffler 3 years and I'll bet we field a pretty effective offense that will help the defense to win a bunch of games every year.
Two yrs. The avg is 2 yrs to install a system.
What's the average on pro style systems?
I would say that LT is a QB, but he is being asked to play as both a QB and as a RB. Having him carry the ball 20 times in addition to passing is plain stupid IMO. LT needs to concentrate and being a good passer, and not get the crap beat out of him running the ball as much as a featured back would run. Ditch the read option please, and hand the ball off to the guys on scholarship to run the ball. We have 3-4 good ones, last time I checked. I do not buy the argument that LT is a TE, not a QB. He played QB 2 years in high school and now 4 and a half years at VT. He is a QB, but he needs to stop being a RB as well. #LT4QBnotRB
I cringe everytime I see the read option.
You KNOW that Logan is going to hold it alot, and there's a 50/50 chance that it's the wrong read.
Maybe it's also a liability to have a 6'6" guy hand off to a much smaller RB, but it seems that the fabled mesh point is a point of uncertainty.
I guess I'm old school, but give the RB the damn ball, and then RB-hit the hole!
Defensive recruits? None. Offensive recruits? Maybe one of two, if that. Recruits don't way heavily on losses like these.
If I were a defensive recruit, I would still walk away from this game shaking my head. It's so demoralizing for a defense to play like that and have the offense piss it all away. I definitely see the appeal of joining an elite unit, but when the circumstances out of their control are this bad, what's the point? I'd much rather look to join a team with a good offense and mediocre defense where I could step in and potentially make a difference.
I don't think we scared anyone away. They either want to be at VT or not. If not I wish them good luck and hope they enjoy their college experience as much as I did. If they do join the Hokie family I'll cheer for them regardless of what the team's record is.
upvote for NYC!
My wife actually had an insightful comment yesterday about this, so credit goes to her.
"Any kid that wants to play bad enough in Blacksburg won't care, someone that wants to play elsewhere won't care, and any kid that is swayed by one game is someone we don't want anyway."
This comment wins the thread. Nothing else needs to be said.
Except those players that are on the fence are the ones we need to impress. It's delusional to think that we should only want players that bleed orange and maroon before they even play here.
I agree with the sentiment above because I tend to think that a level-headed kid who's on the fence will not decide his entire college career based on the outcome of a single game. If he's on the fence and he's not convinced by (1) the legacy built here at VT, (2) the impressive facilities that are only getting better, (3) a strong game day atmosphere, and (4) getting to play on national TV almost every week, I agree with the quote above. We have a lot going for us to swing the fence-sitters, if all of that doesn't sway them, good luck to them wherever they end up.
Boom.
THE MIGHTY MONARCH HAS SPOKEN AND IS AT FULL SALUTE! GIVE IT TO HIM, DR. GIRLFRIEND!!
Just a few points to consider -
If you're a recruit for the defense, I don't know how you could dislike what you saw yesterday. How could you not want to play for a Top 5 defense and possibly the best DC in the country?
If you're a recruit for the offense, I think you could plainly see some major opportunities to play early and often. The offensive scheme yesterday was not the issue - we had guys open all day but LT threw into double and triple coverage most of the game. We were lucky to end up with only 4 INTs. Just like we've credited LT in the past for carrying the team on his back and willed us to win, he was way off yesterday and deserves the bulk of the blame for losing to Duke.
If you're a kicker and saw Journell miss 2 out of 3 FG attempts, you KNOW Tech has a MAJOR opportunity to start next year.
Oh, one more point - if a home crowd had a major effect on recruiting, how does Miami continue to land top recruits each and every year?

In their defense, this was a spring game and their attendance is normally twice as many people as pictured here.
Yes this is a joke, and yes I hate miami
we already have a top kicker coming in next yr. A lefty to
Mmmm... Kicker.
ba-dum da da-da-da da titties and beer
I noticed the lame attendance at the UM game too. I've seen them play twice and other than Duke Johnson (who's a beast) they're not impressive and definitely not top 10. I think we can hang w/ them.
I think it could potentially scare defensive recruits away rather than offensive players. It has to be so frustrating to allow less than 200 yards of offense and have them convert on only ONE third down the entire game and it came in the fourth quarter. Are these recruits going to want to experience that? I hope not, but Reavis has a promising tweet saying that he was hokie nation for life, so hopefully other recruits will feed of off this.
Alright so here's the deal, according to 247 sports, Tim Settle and DeShawn McClease both said they had an awesome time at VT over the weekend...Brandon Lee said the L didn't affect him, and put a video of enter sandman on his instagram. It looked like he had an awesome time in Blacksburg this weekend (who doesn't).
Anyone who thinks one game will turn off recruits doesn't see the big picture and is being a prisoner of the moment.
Plus one for "prisoner of the Moment"...
Nobody committed. That says something for me. That's just my opinion.
To be fair, nobody was really expecting anybody to commit this weekend.
Settle is 2015, and the other top guys want to take their officials. Temper some expectations man.
