HOKIES

Lets be honest about the RB situation. Fuente has all but loathed publicly that he doesn't have "his kind of RB" on the roster. Combine that with the fact that the most productive RB on the roster couldn't get enough carries last season and McClease entering the portal makes perfect sense.

RB's still on the roster:

Jalen Holston - Jr. (next year) - Career carries - 127/ 507 yards (3.99 ypc)
Terius Wheatley - So. - Career carries - 21 / 126 yards (6 ypc)
Caleb Steward - RS Fr.?
Keshawn King - incoming 4* Fr.
Tahj Gary - incoming 3* Fr.

did I hear that Fox and Beck have left the program as well? Regardless, I think we'll be okay. McClease had some flashes of great runs, but if I look back at this past season, Peoples was a far more valuable runner.

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

Can't speak for everyone but Jackson and McClease leaving doesn't surprise me one bit. The writing was on the wall for both and a transfer makes sense. Wish them both the best, assuming JJ does in fact go into the portal.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

I don't McClease. He was going to be the clear #1 this year.

We put the K in Kwality

That's what it seems like at first glance, but he couldn't beat out a converted fullback (Peoples) this year. With King coming in, Hunter switching to RB there's no guarantee he'd be a clear #1 in 2019. I was always rooting for him to break through but he never could quite pull it off. Reminds me a lot of JC Coleman.

How in the world does King and Hunter change anything lol? Neither guy should make any senior worried. This is just silly.

Hunter is an elite athlete, if he demonstrates that he can handle the RB basics of blocking & hitting the right hole in a zone blocking scheme, he's easily the most dynamic guy in the room, except for maybe King, who is a step up in terms of ability/talent compared to McClease and would only be behind him in terms of learning the offense.

At the very least they represent two more dynamic players competing for reps in a room where nobody has managed to breakout head and shoulders above the rest. And that's not even considering the steps Holston, Wheatley, or Steward may be taking this off-season.

He is an elite athlete...that barely got playtime at the position he was recruited for. Not exactly fear inducing. McClease was going to be our best RB this next season, at least to begin with and most likely the entire season.

McClease was the defacto heir apparent, but there was no guarantee he wouldn't be jumped or at least stuck in a committee at the position. He obviously likes his chances better elsewhere

as for Hunter - RB's don't have to play zone defense - they read holes on the line of scrimmage.

Ok great. But doesn't it tell you something about our depth of RBs when we are converting DBs? Remember the last blue-chip DB we converted to RB?

Not really since insiders were saying Hunter was getting a look at running back back in October, long before it was certain that McClease was leaving.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I don't agree with the king and hunter narrative, but agree that the writing was on the wall. He didn't fit this offense at all. He was beat out by a converted fullback this year. Out of all the rbs he had the worst avg rush yds per attempt. Out of the three rbs that actually played a lot mclease had the shortest "long" run of the three at 27 yds. He had fewer rushing attempts this year than he did as a sophomore and fewer yards. He also had fewer rushing attempts this year than Ryan Willis who didn't even start the whole year. I'm guessing after two years of qbs running more than he did and getting fewer carries than the year prior, he might be thinking that a change of scenery is his best option.

Keshawn King better be damn hungry...

Literally. Dude needs to put on weight

Fuente using those NCAA '14 pitches to get Mclease to stick around

It's unlikely he could land at a similar tier P5 school. He might be realizing this is his highest tier opportunity to be the starter. I don't claim to know what's in his head, but that is how I'm seeing it.

Your vision is 20/20

McClease and his family approached VT about getting back in, not Fuente recruiting him to stay. Merry

It'll be very interesting to see how Fuente handles the situation. At least McClease had the foresight to seemingly not torch the bridges with his announcement.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

"oh, you want to come back? Well, you're going to have earn your spot because we have other RBs in this program that didn't try to leave and are 100% committed to this program. You're going to have to work to earn playing time and the trust of your teammates"

or

"We've decided to go in another direction and we're going to use your scholarship to address some other needs through the portal or this year's recruiting class"

Fuente would be crazy not to want him back. However, I have never seen McClease as a workhorse back; I don't think his body will handle it. So, we still have concerns with or without him. I thought Holston was looking better this year too. Bottom line, the rb room is better with McClease than without.

"A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky dangerous animals and you know it." - K

On paper it's preferable to have McClease but I don't think it's a given to take him back. Some guys stuck it out and focused on uniting the team while McClease chose to spend his time looking to leave. I don't believe his transfer message or actions placed him beyond redemption but he gave up his spot on the team. I'd have the team to vote on letting him back and make it clear that he lost some trust and will be earning his way back on the field.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

I was thinking the same thing about a team vote. The message has been shifted from rats jumping the sinking ship to trimming some fat in order to improve. Letting a guy back into a locker room where players may feel he abandoned the team will only backtrack on the progress made in unifying the team toward a forward looking view. If the players feel he rushed some things and he is still committed to the success of the team above the individual, let him come back.

Plan for the worst and hope for the best, not the other way around.

Theres no way you can spin this, this is a dramatically good thing for this football team and Fuente has absolutely won the locker room over and if he doesnt watch himself hes inline for a contract extension.

Without knowing the dynamic between the player and the coach: I would let him back on the team without any issue what so ever. Of course he has to compete for playing time but he was already doing that. I would tell him that the staff is excited to see him elevate his game to the highest level.

No need to rub anything in his face at this point. Just an invitation to continue to work hard and compete.

Good reminder that the portal doesn't mean they're transferring. Just keeping their options open. It does not mean they're bailing on the team. These are kids trying to make the best decision for their lives.

Always choose joy.

Very curious to see how Fu handles this. From my understanding, a very hard line was drawn at last week's meeting and a deadline was given for player's to decide if they were in or out. Part of me thinks the staff may not welcome him back. I think for the first time since he's taken over, Fu's culture is on the brink of being fully established, and welcoming Clease back might compromise that

I'm definitely going to be asking about this one as soon as I can. I would think it would also be a good opportunity for Fuente to show that he is human. But wtf do I know. I'm interested in how this one lands.

There is a way out of this that let's McClease potentially come back without Fuente look like he's breaking his word or position. He lets the players vote. But if you go that route, you have to be willing to accept two things:

(1) Whatever the players decide, you support. If they vote to let him back on the team, you let him back on the team. If they vote not to let him back on the team, you don't let him back on the team. Under no circumstances can you put it to a team vote, have them vote no, and then decide to bring him back anyway. (FWIW, whether true or not, I heard the former staff did this with one particular player. That staff had more goodwill built up though so could weather that kind of decision).
(2) If the players vote to allow him back, that may in reality make more players in the future want to enter the portal and test the waters as they don't see a sense of finality in it and reason to themselves they can come back like McClease. So you'd potentially be cracking the door to more difficult situations in the future by taking him back.

I agree with the 1st point of letting the players vote and make it a "team" decision. I don't think any decision made by the team as a whole would come back to seriously hurt us (I also don't know any details of why he entered to portal, outside of wanting more PT next year).

I am curious how Fuente responds here. In recruiting he seems pretty stern on players showing commitment to the program and not wanting commits to take additional visits. So by Clease already not showing commitment to the program, this raises the question, would Fuente open the door for his return...although he has already been committed to VT football for 4 years and I see that argument as well.

I think I would put it to a team or a captains vote

Free Hugh

I have to imagine this was decided over the weekend when Fu met with McClease and his family. Also we may not have hit the deadline yet?

I took LA's post to imply that the hard deadline had passed. Hence the uncertain situation.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

To me, this sets a precedent for the Portal for every year moving forward. I say you CANT have this happen on a regular basis every year so you can't let him back. It makes it seem too flippant of a decision and I don't think it is that way for his teammates. They want the guys around them to be all-in, not half in half out.

Tu-rod did it Mikey! Tu-rod did it!

All the portal jumpers should be taken as a form of feedback to Fuente.

He's not going to be able to please everyone, no one can, so every year we will hear about the people in the portal.

He needs to take this feedback and sell the vision of where they are headed better. It's obviously tougher to do after a season like we just had, thus probably the excessive amounts of portal guys this year.

If Fuente doesn't think he has to make some changes personally to his approach after last seasons debacle he won't be here much longer.

I have a feeling he will and look forward to the feature.

What's
Important
Now

There is more potential for leeway when someone makes a mistake with something new. Players and coaches are both learning about this new portal thing. Coaches can make this clear.

Without knowing details, assuming nothing bad was said or done, you have to entertain him coming back, people make mistakes. He's what 22, every 22 year old is a dumby. If that is a team decision and an apology then sure. I am not sure an apology is the right word, but a statement about how he realizes he wants to be at VT. With this team. Not even public, just to the team and coaches. maybe just the team. But he made a mistake that was barely a week long? If Fuente wants his guys to be committed then show that it is a two way street. Just how Reavis is a hokie to me, McClease is a Hokie, and not helping him after a mistake isn't a commitment to your players, because lots of players will make mistakes, they're human. Now that doesnt mean McClease doesnt have to work on his side of the commitment, but this is a teaching moment.

This is tricky because if Fu doesn't welcome McClease back, it may play into the narrative portrayed by malcontents that he doesn't care about the players. However, I agree with what others have said here in that the meeting last week established a unified front so to speak.

Have the players decide, I have no problem with McClease coming back if the team welcomes it.

Counterpoint - if you let the players vote you will end up with two different (albeit potentially minor) factions UNLESS somehow there is a unanimous vote.

Leadership courage is making the hard decision, not delegating to the masses.

Cuts both ways. I could easily say the exact opposite and it would work: "leadership is having the strength to delegate and trust the decisions of your people"

Free Hugh

I agree.

I guess I should have specified that my opinion based on what I have heard about and observed (albeit from message boards) is that we had a fractured locker room that wasn't 100% bought into leadership.

If a team meeting was held and the team drew a hard line in the sand around commiting to the team and this deadline has passed, Fuente has already done as you suggested and had the strength to delegate and trust his team. If he does not stand firm behind the team's initial resolution and asks them to take a vote on an exception, he risks losing their trust.

Of course this is all speculation because I am not in that organization.

I would welcome McClease back but I could easily just stick with Holston, Wheatley, King, and Gary. Let them get experience and have 2 backs, a work horse and a change of pace. I have seen enough of McClease to know that he does have his moments with good plays but he fumbled a few times and he isn't running over a linebacker. I like Wheatley on jet sweeps, and Holston and King sharing carries, let Gary redshirt and McClease can go to a smaller school and be the man. Ok, I am done being a couch coach. Best of luck to McClease, Fuente, and all the other players and coaches doing best for themselves, the team, and getting the culture and transition from the Beamer to the Fuente era finalized and everybody either buying in or leaving. Most of Fuente's recruits make up the team now and the players recruited by Beamer at this point have played more under Fuente than Beamer, they know the deal.

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

I forgot Steward, I hope he surprises a lot of people this year as well!

FIRST DOWN, HOKIES!

I'm puzzled as to why he didn't get any looks in the "you can play 4 games now" scenario? We didn't see him at all.

I wouldn't be surprised if he doesnt finish his career here, I've heard a lot of different things coming out of his camp, but who knows. I do know he will be hosting pat Bryant on a visit coming up in the next couple months.

Yeah, Fu needs to improve player evals if that is the case. Seems like a ton of guys don't "fit" after they get here.

That's usually the case with about 25% of players in any given recruiting class.

I just sit on my couch and b*tch. - HokieChemE2016

Totally agree. French brought up similar concerns about scouting in a midseason post. We can't afford to recruit at a top 30 level, and have 25% of our players not 'fit' (as RealDeihl suggested). We to hit on a small percent of the bottom of our recruiting class, and we need the other lesser recruited players to be 'glue guys', so to speak.

If all he did was put his name in the Portal to investigate his options, and he is otherwise in good standing with VT and the team, bring him back with open arms. Seems like a good kid and a solid player. Not likely our #1 answer at RB, but depth and experience are both good things.

I say, make him earn the spot on the team. He has till the end of Spring to show the leaders on the team and his teammate what it means to be team first and be a real hokie.

"Welcome to the Terror Dome." -- Corey Moore

Treat him like a walk-on and make him earn his spot? Sort of like they did with Ray Minor?

Way back in the 90s, on BeamerBall.com, I asked Coach about one of our players, whose name I forget. The guy got arrested for some drug thing and suspended. I asked Coach why he would let him back on the team. CFB wrote something like "When a kid makes a commitment to VT and to me, I make a commitment to him." (The guy wound up getting drafted into the NFL, back when that didn't happen all that often for us.)

Let's not forget that DeShawn is a kid. Let's allow him his mistakes and growing pains. I say, let him have his scholarship and work his way into the lineup like everyone else. No punishment. Just put your arm around him and say "Welcome back, Hokie! We missed you! This will always be Home!"

this. great post

Saban told a similar story a few years ago about giving players a second chance. The player he referenced was Muhsin Muhammad (Mich St) and that second chance gave him the opportunity to create generational wealth for his family forever.

Sometimes giving second chances will bite you in the ass, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth giving someone a chance to correct a mistake and move forward.

Sorry, but he's not a kid. Legally he's an adult & decisions bear consequences. That being said, I'd like it if he came back and (hopefully) had the bulk of the carries. He performed VERY well in our bowl game (going for well over 100 yds).

I agree. And if I didn't agree, I'd at least tell you why instead of down voting you.

If he is still a kid at his age, college and his coaches are failing him.

I think it is entirely debatable whether or not he made a mistake here. We aren't privy to his reasoning.

So I think it's a little insulting to this adult to imply his decision making process is childish without knowing the details.

I agree that he is an adult but that shouldn't mean he can't make a bad decision and ask to come back. There is no value in being so hard line that the door is closed indefinitely.

someone recently left my company with one of their co workers. they found out in less than a month the grass was not greener. they tried to come back to my company and were turned away. now they are unemployed. life is hard sometimes. that is how adulting works sometimes. not all times. but sometimes. so im fine with whatever fuente decides. would this fellow coming back to our company help as he has experience of our systems, report with fellow employees, and vendors, and was a great employee while with us, but the message it sends to other employees is just as important. I doubt we look back in a year or 2 and say man we really miss him as he can be replaced with someone equally or close to equally as productive but if we get a bunch of disgruntled employees feeling like they can just at every new opportunity that comes there way and if it doesn't work out come right back where they are comfortable that would cause a problem a year or 2 down the line.

So what? I have a story about a staff member that left against my advice and came back in a lower position and is now Head of Projects.

Drawing a line is a good policy. Knowing when to enforce the line is leadership.

that is how adulting works sometimes

I was just saying if that is what happens to clease then tough shit. that's how adulating works, key word sometimes. if it worked out the way you mentioned above, then great. That is also how adulating works sometimes. I would not have been upset at either outcome. McClease would not have a right to be either IMO. His decision to enter the portal took away his control and put it into someone elses hands. Lucky for him his boss was more like your company and less like mine.

That just means you need to be damn sure of your value and abilities before you begin to try to leverage them

but that shouldn't mean he can't make a bad decision and ask to come back. There is no value in being so hard line that the door is closed indefinitely.

I don't disagree. My point was confined to making value judgments on someone else's personal decision that was made based on criteria we know little to nothing about.

And if I didn't agree, I'd at least tell you why instead of down voting you.

Thank you. It would be nice if those few other folks in the community would the guidelines instead participating in seemingly groupthink behavior.

male brain aint fully developed until age 25

(and based on this message board sometimes later than that...ayooooo)

Correct. However, the law technically delegates that a male is a legal adult by the age of 18 (whether their brain has matured to said status or not). Also, on the note of biology, while the brain may have not developed until 25, the rest of his anatomy has.

the law technically delegates

Not technically. It just states.

that a male is a legal adult by the age of 18

Only males? Also it's at 18, not by 18

while the brain may have not developed until 25, the rest of his anatomy has.

I would guess that some human development majors might have something to say about this.

Why do you insist on doing this literally every time this issue comes up? The point is never that they aren't legally adults. The point is that young adults are still prone to poor decision making. You look ridiculous. Stop.

The Orange and Maroon you see, that's fighting on to victory.

Why do you insist on doing this literally every time this issue comes up?

First off, there are at least a dozen other posts on here (& littered throughout TKP) referencing this (& other) legal, adult athletes as "kids" that I have not responded to or mentioned. Therefore, that proves that I DO NOT, in fact, bring it up "literally every time". Second, I chose to respond to this one because of the original commenters' repeated, hammering narrative of McClease being a kid (which, legally & in many biological aspects, he's not). If he had just used the whole "he's a kid" phrase once or twice & just emphasized this

The point is that young adults are still prone to poor decision making.

then I probably wouldn't have felt the need to offer an interjection. That being, because he needlessly rehashed the whole "being a kid" thing, it sort of drowned out the more important point that he may have been trying to make, for me. As for this

You look ridiculous.

even if that carries some truth, it doesn't weigh enough for me to care in this specific instance. At least, not enough for me to assign value to it right now.
EDIT: One more thing. In my initial response to the original commenter, I spent about 2 (just 2) measly, & brief, sentences discussing why I disagreed with his repeatedly emphasized "kid" assertion. The bulk of my response (regarding McClease coming back) was my main assertion. You stated (in your response) that his (the original commenters') "kid" emphasis should be (essentially) be overlooked (not directly quoting you) and that the point about people making mistakes should be paid attention to. Don't you think my response deserves the same thing you've just stated? I think it does.

Lmao PEOPLE ARE TRYIN TA SLEEP!!!

The rest of his anatomy has

Excuse me?

I can't believe this is a question here. Not letting him play would be shooting ourselves in the foot. Let's be clear he is ON the team right now. He is not coming BACK from anywhere. He decided to explore interest elsewhere, it's his right and if it doesn't go anywhere then it doesn't.

The only way we could reasonably kick someone off for this is if Fuente established some sort of rule about it that he violated. If that happened then sure but there's been no indication of that.

you don't need a "rule" to release someone of their scholarship. (see cam goode) If you want a reason as to why that he can legally stand by for doing so.... "actions detrimental to the team" "violation of team rules" would fit the bill and be all he needs to say. He would not have to elaborate anymore than that if he choose not to.

hes currently still in school but he is NOT with the team. he is not participating in the winter work out program and therefor is not with the team.

This isn't an attack, however, your posts are littered with grammatical errors. Just simply an observation.

wasn't me that down voted you. I know I suck at English class. its been pointed out on here numerous times. im not planning to take any English/ grammar courses anytime soon though so try and bare with me and read it the best you can as im typing it the best I can. if you cant read it or don't want to just move on to the next comment. thanks and im sorry.

I know, and I wasn't insinuating that you were. While your grammatical structure can be head-scratching at times, the content of many of your posts bring up great points. Truth is I'm used to (not just mine) posts getting down-voted on TKP without explanation. It's a regularity. That's why (most of the time) it doesn't bother me.

upvoted to even you out. #fam

LoL! Thanks. Ya didn't have to do that, but thanks. Appreciate it all the same.

Derrius Monroe?

Apparently, Cornelsen just said in the Roanoke meeting they expect Mcclease to come back to the team. Nothing official but that's what they think will happen.

Gobble Till You Wobble

Wait, is McClease really Khadim Sy in disguise?

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

That comparison just made me think of this totally absurd picture.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

Scary part, she is wearing heels.

There's gotta be off about that photo. Shaq is 7'-1" and Simone is 4'-8". That's only 2'-5" difference between the two of them but he looks twice as tall as her!

Taking McClease back would undermine everything that Coach Fu is trying to do recently. He can't do it, he just can't. He has had a fractured locker room since he took over as coach, and now he is trying to avoid that by taking a hard line stance with some guys in terms of honest assessments and playing time projections. Yes, he is trying to "weed" some kids out that are not on board. Can't take McClease back now, not after what he told some players about the vision moving forward. Just my opinion.

I think this is a fair concern. I don't know what the situation between McClease and Fuente is, but I guess you have to just trust Fuente to make the right decision on this one.

It's not as though we have a choice or say in the matter anyways.

fuente lands composite 0.8711 3 star RB from the transfer portal 1 week before National signing day! HUGE GET! lets gooooo!!!!!!!!! HOKIES!!!!!!!! and yall said that man cant recruit! /s

McClease officially no longer in the transfer portal and will be back with the team.

I've got the inside scoop on this one. I saw him play a couple times when he was at the University of Virginia Tech. He ran for over 100 yards against a top 25 defense in their bowl game. He might be good enough to contribute from day one.

Huge get!

For anyone still worried about Turner leaving, I'd like to think that him welcoming McClease back to the team is a positive sign.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Saickoooo is a welcome back? What is he trying to say?

Saicko_slim is McClease's handle (user name) on Twitter so I'm guessing that's what his friends call him.

Can we update the post title to reflect the fact that McClease is no longer in the portal?

I think that's big enough news for everyone to know that is currently lost in the noise of this thread.

Could read something like McClease Portalled back to Tech

What's
Important
Now

Or, McLease escapes portal, still a Hokie

McLease right-clicks a town portal scroll to get back home.

Sick reference

Warning: this post occasionally contains strong language (which may be unsuitable for children), unusual humor (which may be unsuitable for adults), and advanced mathematics (which may be unsuitable for liberal-arts majors)..

How do we know McLease didn't step into the portal, go to the future and play an entire season, step back into the portal and return to present day? We may be getting a more experienced RB!

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

Maybe the portal has a critical mass? So when Hooker went in, the critical mass was exceeded by about 180lbs and it spit McClease back out.

"Nope, launch him into the sun and fart on him on the way up"
-gobble gobble chumps

"11-0, bro"
-Hunter Carpenter (probably)

McClease is back on the team
