WBB Virginia Tech vs Florida State Stats and Open Thread

Update to add more stats and some comments. No pics today.

Don't have time for much this morning. Have to walk the dog and get ready for church. If I have a little more time after I finish my chores, I'll add Season Stats and Pics later.

Virginia Tech vs #22 Florida State(16-3, 4-2ACC) at Cassell.

Game time is 2PM and coverage is ACCNE and VT/IMG Radio

Here are their Conference Stats:

They don't shoot 3's well and they are not much taller than we are. If we can play a complete game, we should have a chance.

Overall Stats:

Player Stats:

They have won on the road at UVA(by 2) and UNC(by 1) and at BC(by 20) and at home against Duke( by 4). They lost at home to # 30 Clemson(by 12) and #4 Louisville(by 19).

Just looking at the stats, I would conclude that they are a good defensive team. They hold opponents to 63.7 points per game in ACC play and 57.8 points overall. We are going to have to be careful with the ball today.

They are susceptible to foul trouble. Myers averages 4 fouls per game in ACC play and has fouled out twice. Gillespie only average 1.5 fouls per game but has fouled out once. Woolfolk average 3 fouls per game. Only Ekhomu and Myers shoot free throws well. Only Myers averages more than 30% from 3; and she has only tried 3 shots in ACC play.

No Pics today. Out of time.

Hokies in their normal position. Leading by 7 at the half. If they can play a full game, they can win this. Don't lose concentration.

Another game, another choke job...

How is it possible to blow this many games?

Keep calm, Gobble on

It's actually incredible the different ways they manage to lose. I've never seen anything like it.

Amazing. FSU leads for first time with 22 seconds left. This happens after Emery missed 2 free throws (she shoots 84%). Then she gets 2 wide open mid-range looks (airballs the first one and misses 2nd). This team deserves the Chokie designation more than any other. They were in position to win every ACC game except Notre Dame (which is completely understandable) and maybe Miami (I just can't remember). I don't understand how a team with so much experience can't close out games.

You are correct. We started to blow the game near the end of the 3rd quarter against Miami. The others were all 4th quarter collapses.

0-7 in the ACC in year 3 of Coach Brooks. 6 very winnable games that we fell apart in. Brooks has to go if we don't start winning games. The team has the talent, but they fall apart every 4th quarter. It's really pathetic to be dead last in the ACC when we're supposed to be an NCAA tournament team. Brooks should be embarrassed and fearful for his job

Let's not forget how much money he's making for a non-revenue sport...

Led 52-42 with 4:53 left. 5 turnovers and 4 fouls from there. Made 1 lay up and missed 5 shots and 2 free throws. All they really had to do was hold onto the ball to win the game and they could not do that. Then it got close and they really choked. Disappointing.

At the very least, they needed to try to let the shot clock run down. When they did get a shot off, it was still solidly in double digits. That's on the coach.

This is also the second game that Emory has not only not contributed much(4 for 11; 1 for 4 from 3); but has missed critical foul shots and field goals late. We need someone to step up at the end of these games and make the critical shot.

Led 54-47 with 2:47 left in the game and somehow managed to not score again.

I think it's time to admit Brooks is in over his head in the ACC.

"When I was growing up, Virginia Tech was a school that was kicking ass and taking names, and it's time we get back to that" - James Franklin

Brooks is not the one dribbling into double teams in a corner; or the one making horrible telegraphed passes. But you would expect him to coach the players how to break a press and not to pick up their dribble until they know where they are going with the ball. He did diagram a perfect play for Emory near the end of the game where she shot an uncontested air ball. Maybe he is doing as well as he can with the players he has. I still remember his comment after one of the games where he said he told the players to change the plan to break the press and they did not follow his instructions. I am willing to give him at least one more year to get his players into the system.

this all sounds dreadfully familiar....
