Ask TKP: What's Your Six-Team College Football Division

The Hokies are one of them, which programs are slotted 2-6, and why?

So here's my criteria:

1) Assuming travel is negligible
2) "Tier 1/2" programs
3) Passonate fanbases
4) Cities/college towns I would actually want to spend time in with great restaurants, bars etc.

1) Michigan
2) Wisconsin
3) Georgia
4) Texas
5) Washington (just so I can tailgate on a boat on a regular basis)

  1. Virginia Tech
  2. West Virginia
  3. Miami
  4. Tennessee
  5. Penn State
  6. Florida State

I went with regional programs (powers) that the either that Hokies have a history with (Miami, West Virginia, Florida State), or should (Penn State and Tennessee). A home-and-home round-robin of this schedule would be legit fun every season.

It would be fun, and we would hate the other 3 schools schools as much as WVU and Miami inside of five years--if we don't already in some cases.

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

I felt a massive anger rise up inside of me. This would be a great list.

I see you went with the hate week every week division.

If you play it, they will win.

I pretty much the exact same list except I would switch out UGA. Michigan, or BC. I know BC football hasn't been great as of late but I really enjoy playing them. Similar style to us. Respectable program. and fuck matt ryan. I could spend the rest of my life making them pay for that without being mad I didn't play anyone else.

VT, daU, UVA, NebCorn, LSU, PSU

Why: No idea but I'll try to explain.

Nebraska is a long travel but their fans are awesome and I'd love to head back for some VT Corn games.

da U and loluva: Rivalry reasons, I was about to include WVU then I remembered how shitty Morgantown is.

LSU: Big Time program, decent history, on the rise. This was really a toss up of current mid-high tier (read not Bama) SEC teams and Clemson (who I didn't pick cause I already picked two teams in our conference)

PSU: Fucking stop taking our states talent.

Edit: Might trade in Michigan over LSU who was my wildcard pick..... Danny Coale caught the ball
Edit again: this thread has me thinking a lot. I took away WVU cause Morgantown sucks and put Miami in there...like i guess Miami is okay but the games there kinda suck.

Are ya ready? Prepare for something weird

1. Virginia Tech
2. Utah
3. Maryland
4. Iowa
5. Syracuse
6. Boise State

I picked these teams because, as a program I feel we're more on the level of Iowa and Utah. Also, I want to beat them in our 1st matchup. Finally, I picked 'Cuse & MD because I want to even and surpass them (records wise) in the overall series.

Yikes....this doesn't leave much room for program advancement.... sell those recruits on the "we get to play the powerhouse that is Iowa every year"????

(add if applicable) /s

I warned ya it was gonna be weird. I created mine totally based on vengeance.

Carrier Dome every other year? Hard pass.

We need to destroy-nay, OBLITERATE that notion completely, & not by running from it.

No, really... Fuck that.

Leonard. Duh.

As a big Iowa fan, the first time VT plays them is a dream for me as well as a nightmare. With a continuous series though it would be alright since I'd get to see it again next year.
With that being said, I completely agree that they are generally on the same level and would make for a good and likely unpredictable matchup every year unlike a lot of the teams people have listed here that we CAN beat but until we get both offense and defense clicking consistently at the same time will likely beat us more often than not. Good list.

I'm a Hawkeyes fan as well, but for me they're a solid second behind the Hokies. Would like to see them play, though.

My wife is a Hawkeye. I can only imagine that a VT/Iowa game would not be a pleasant event at our household. I'd be in a no-win situation.

Edit: Where did you get your VT/IA flag?

Take the shortest route to the ball and arrive in bad humor.

We're a program on the level of Utah? Let's not set that bar too high, eh?

Even with our recent down years, VT is still tied for the 4th most wins over the last 25 years. We can do better than Utah.

Why? They've had a winning record since '03. And let's not even get started on how their bowl record (in terms of Ws) absolutely DWARFS ours, which includes 2 BCS wins (a claimed Natty), and a blow out of Bamy in the Sugar Bowl. I wish our team played as consistently as Utah.

LSU - great fans
Nebraska - great fans
Miami - because I like beating those smug assholes
UVA - because I like beating those smug assholes
NC State - they need a different rivalry. They're trying to compete too much with the smug assholes at unc and duke. They can be a decent team from time to time; it would make for a decent state school rivalry for us.

I like this list, one school off from my list and my dad went to NcSt so I could watch him openly root against his old school.

Go Big East!
P.S. we'd play UVA every year out of conference/division.

Florida State
Clemson

We don't play FSU and Clemson enough as it is, I feel like playing Texas A&M would maybe be a more good natured rivalry if not a geographically sensible one, and I will always salivate at the thought of whooping ass on An U and those pricks in Knoxville. Thought about WVU, but really would just rather not with them. In this imaginary scenario LOLUVA is relegated to in-state-division status and is our cupcake game early in the season.

ATM is a good one for sure. I've always respected them and thought a matchup with them could be a great military appreciation day due to the long history we both have with the cadets.

1. University Texas El Paso
2. New Mexico State
3. University of Louisiana Lafeyette
4. Ball State
5. Alabama Crimson Tide

Wait, is this a division or a guess at the first 5 games on LSU's 2022 schedule?

Not the bagman VT deserves, but the bagman VT needs right now.

Talk about a division where home game schedules every year in division are guaranteed to be awesome.

UVA is a locked rival of course but not in our division.

A home and home with A&M every couple years.

VT
FSU
Ole Miss
USC
Texas
Arizona State

This is purely based on tailgates and golf trips for away games.

This is a very cool angle to take with this. I subscribe. I look forward to not shooting well and having a great time anyways at all these golf outings.

Virginia Tech
Penn State
South Carolina (wish we had games with them...but we don't get to play the one SC one in our own damn conference, so why would we be able to do this?)

Wisconsin and Nebraska would be good in the fun road trips section, though nebraska could be country western.

My six team division for VT with permanent crossovers and second six team division for a dream 12-team conference. You would have a huge ratings draw every weekend for every conference game, plus preserves a ton of rivalries and great national and regional matchups.

Virginia Tech - WVU
Penn State - Pitt
Ohio State - Michigan
Tennessee - UF
Miami - Florida St.
Clemson - Georgia

Would bring me great joy for Clemson to have to play hard all year instead of coasting until the postseason.

The STATE Conference:
VPI&SU
PSU (alternating White Out at theirs, and Black Out at Lane)
LSU (terrordome v death valley)
FSU (need a tie to florida and I find the turnover chain more douchey than the chop)
BSU (Boise, because it's a cool place with good fans)
NCST (NC2VT shall never end)

Give me OkSt over BSU and I'll take it.

My logic is that the division would be made up of the best football school in each nearby state.

I assume you mean historically because Tennessee hasn't been the best team in it's state in a few years (a few coaches ago).

2 local powers (Penn St and Tenn) that could easily become great rivalries, 3 actual rivalries. Completely VT-selfish list.
