My phone crashed on the old one so it was time. This might help with the Financial gap between the SEC and other conferences
The Haslams pull the same shit at UT, which is why they haven't had a decent coach since Fulmer and why this last coaching search was such a cluster.
Maybe, but the SEC has lots of donors, and lots of big money donors, that will keep the money flowing regardless of their conference deal quality.
On the other side of the Network payout spectrum, you have the Pac-12 netowrk that is struggling big time. Pac 12 Network only paid each school $2.6 million in 2018. Average payout over the Pac 12 network's six year existence has been just $1.6 million.
Clicky clicky
... And worth just about every penny.
Well, maybe not.
The article why they are pulling out of Espn is crazy town
http://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/25797430/inside-cleveland-browns-fron...
How bad is your office when you see porn up on a wall and think well might as well give this 20 min
Given the amount of time I have worked on various government contract with former Navy and other military guys, I feel like they would artistically critique the videos like it was a college film class. I can honestly say this wouldn't be the worst thing I have heard or saw after spending days of long hours developing and testing in various labs or customer sites.
Maybe they thought it was an ad for a pool cleaning service
Or pizza delivery, or plumber or school detention.
Josh Downs committed to UNC. Good get for them, although Dre Bly is his Uncle, so if they didn't get his commit, I would have to question his recruiting prowess.
Bly will look good until he runs out of kids he had relationships with at Myers Park, and the whole never been a coach before other then 7 on 7s thing kicks in.
I see they have a 4 Star recruit ILB outta Richmond (Ethan West). It's actually become comical how bad VT is with recruiting Richmond over the years. Sure you could name a handful of RVA kids that have committed over the years but I'd respond with a bigger list of 4/5 star recruits from the capital city that went out of state.
I'm not personally familiar, but I've heard that Ethan West is terribly overrated and will likely drop throughout the year. The complaints were that he doesn't move well and isn't a natural athlete, but I'm sure someone here has a better account of his talents.
Word on the street is he's Charmin soft
MACK BROWN IS OLD, he will be 70 by the time these kids are playing
It hasn't hurt Coach K
Basketball coaches usually are much older than their football counterparts.
Edit: There are 7 basketball coaches 70 or older.
There is 1 football coach over 70.
255~ football programs FBS and FCS
347~ basketball teams
So what would be the math for that then?
Are those numbers adjusted for the greater numbers of b-ball coaches?
By percentage of overall coaches by sport it would be:
FBS: 0.769% coaches 70+
D-1 Basketball: 1.99% coaches 70+
Not a huge difference, really.
One could say the percentage of basketball coaches over 70 is 2.5x that of football.
Who knew that statistics could be interpreted in different ways to fit different arguments?
As an old friend who worked at the Pentagon once told me - Figures lie and liars figure.
(Not implying anyone is lying on here, but you get the point)
There are 130 FBS Schools, so there is 1 ea 70+ coach by these numbers (Mack is it)
There are 347 D-1 Basketball Schools, so there are 7 ea 70+ coach by these numbers.
So there are the actual numbers.
Mack isn't 70 yet. The 70 plus year old coach is at University of Ohio, Frank Solich.
Coach K could keep Just For Men in business all by himself. He'd look like Bobby Cremins without his daily hair dye.
And you know this....how?
Coach K been there 40 years Mack just starting and yes he was there before
UNC is currently sitting with 4 4*'s and ranked 13th in the country in recruiting. Meanwhile Tech is 27th and has 0 4*'s, kinda depressing if you think about it.
Crazy early in the process for next year. Drawing conclusions now seems silly
When you take into account that they jumped ~60 spots in recruiting rankings after Mack and team took over last year, it's not as silly to assume their strong performance on the trail will continue.
Honestly how many years do you see Mack coaching and Webster staying at one team?
Does that matter? Each year they're there and we sit on our hands staff/recruting-wise, we are at significant risk of falling behind a program who you can't even call a 'peer'
Why is that relevant? They're taking recruits from us RIGHT NOW that we badly want. Even if he's there for four years, that's a large group of talented players that aren't on our roster.
What signed recruits do they get this cycle they Tech had a shot with but Mack coming in got instead? These kids committing aren't signed.
As for why it's relvent Mack will be the second oldest football coach and soon one of only two guys in their 70's to coach how long you think he can keep telling kids and their parents he will be there in the next 4 years for that kids playing time?
Uhhh someone named Eugene Asante? Asante fell in love with Clint Brewster over the last few weeks of his recruitment, but you know what really sealed the deal? Larry, eugene's brother, had a previous connection to Mack Brown from some sort of coaching clinic. The two reconnected on Eugene's visit and really hit it off. Before the visit, Larry wanted Eugene to go to Nebraska the most, with VT a close 2nd. After the visit, Larry was all UNC. Eugene was truly torn between VT and UNC, but Larry's influence really pushed him over the edge. Btw, Eugene told just about anyone that would listen on his OV that well he was going to VT.
CRS was also a silent commit and was planning on announcing for VT in December. When Mack hired Dre Bly, Bly convinced CRS to hold off and take a couple visits to Chapel Hill and the rest is history.
So to answer your question, he beat us out for the only 2019 that we had a real shot with (not to mention Wisdom Asaboro who we were pushing extremely hard for to visit), who has since signed, as well as our heaviest lean of the 2020 class. You can say all you want about how he isn't singed yet, but I'll give you my left night if he flips.
So one as for the other guy I mean come on isn't Bly related to him either as a relative or high school coach?
He was but that doesn't assure that a recruit will follow him. Bowick (CRS's best friend) stayed committed to and ended up signing with VT. J Ham was Deng's coach at VMI and he ended up at Cal. Porter Rooks goes to Meyer Park and he committed to NCSU after Bly was hired. Demarco Hellams didn't follow Elijah Brooks to Maryland. And don't you think that if we hired Loren Johnson and created a pipeline to Highland Springs that Fuente would, rightfully, be applauded for the hire? Wasn't hiring Bly a decision that Mack made??
At some point you have to stop making excuses for losses and give credit where credit was due. You can pray and hope that Mack fails and say "but he's old!" until you're blue in the face, but he is doing very very well on the trail right now. All of the proof out there supports that claim right now too.
I'm not making excuses I'm offering my opinion about a person and a team. What is your threshold for UNC and Mack saying they will do really well recruiting? 5 spots higher in their year to year average class ranking?
2003 18th ranked class
2004 28th
2006 26
2007 10th
2009 12th
2010 23rd
2011 18th
2013 28th
2015 28th
2017 29th
2018 20th
From that list I'm pretty damn impressed with UNC recruiting for awhile now. What's Tech's best class in that same time period?
Edit: Tech's best class since 2003 is 18th! EIGHT lower than UNC's best class and still behind one other UNC class and tied for two others. UNC has out recruited Tech for a long time. So what is the difference Mack brings that Fedora, Bunting or Davis didn't have? Is Mack getting them too 10 or 15 classes?
it's like you're having two separate conversations or something
Yeah I'm really confused with the point of that past post and how it relates to what we were just talking about.
Mack isn't going to drastically change the average class at UNC. He isn't some recruiting god sent to UNC to make them nationally relevant.
He. Is. Hurting. VT. Recruiting. Right. Now.
UNC π has πalways π hurt π Tech πrecruiting.
We really going down the period after every word road?
No one is disputing that. Mack Brown and Dry Bly just reinforce it even more so. If UNC had same coaching staff as last year, we probably have Asante as a part of our recruiting class.
Or he goes to Nebraska which was a strong contender.
He didn't visit nebraska. It was VT or UNC with UMD a distant third. If it wasn't UNC it would've been VT
There is nothing you can say that will change his mind
Didn't you say his brother want him to go to Nebraska? Or were you talking about another player earlier? If you didn't then I take that back.
Larry wanted him at Nebraska cause it's his alma mater, but Eugene was not interested in going that far from home. His four OV's were to VT, FSU, UCLA, and UNC and he took a midweek visit to UMD. VT, UNC, and UMD were the only schools in consideration at the end
I'm just here for the downvotes.
And comments bringing attention to you getting downvotes in hopes to get upvotes... love you buddy
It honestly doesn't matter where their classes rank. The major issue is that they are getting recruits that we want, preventing us from getting our roster where we want it to be.
I'm not worried about UNC's long term on-field success. I am worried about how losing recruits that we think can make OUR football team better is slowing us down from getting to where we want to be. It is especially frustrating losing them to a lower quality football program like UNC.
The recruiting losses to UNC affect our roster this season, and next season, and possibly the next season, and those misses can add up. The outlook of our program could be different if we don't lose those 2-4 key guys to UNC each year, which is what is what is happening right now.
Without looking because I just went through all the class rankings. UNC has always recruited well based on rankings how many top 15 kids have they taken from Virginia the last 15 years.
So you're talking about just VA guys now?
No but I have no idea how to find whatbguys in 2003 Tech wanted from NC or anywhere else that instead went to UNC. Say Mack keeps his class at 13 that won't even be UNC highest ranked class in last 15 years. So why should I be more concerned about Mack than I was for Fedora?
That's a fair question. I think you'll see more of a VA presence from UNC going forward. They've already landed two 4* players from VA and it's only been a couple of months. We'll just have to wait and see
How would a comparison of our North Carolina recruiting and their VA recruiting look?
Hard to say. NC is deeper state than VA in my opinion. We had a great class there in 2018 but it dropped off a bit in 2019. From a pure numbers standpoint though, VT has pulled more talent from NC than UNC likely will from VA
This guy gets it.
They take from us, we take from them. It seems like something dramatically changed because they just moved in on guys we were hot on. Had they been here prior, we may have already moved off those guys once it was obvious where they were leaning. Everybody needs to relax on Fireman here. The point about past classes is valid. Mack is just keeping it going.
Agreed. In terms of coaches before-and-after, is the current UNC class really different from their past recruiting standard? Looks like not. With the natural ups and downs of recruiting it doesn't look like their class is an outlier of UNC's recruiting capability. They have always grabbed a few guys we wanted and time will tell if the new coaching staff is better or worse at a this recruiting game. Early projections look like yes, but the small sample size means conclusions can only be drawn with low confidence.
Fuente just needs to show some of Mack's bonehead ESPN footage.
The issue is a lot of us aren't giving credit where credit is due. We just look for someone to blame on our side instead of for a split second thinking maybe the other school made a more compelling sales pitch. We can sell the hell out of Virginia Tech, but if early playing time is a kids #1 priority and another school can offer it and we can't, that kid is going to the other school. Not saying that's what happened with Asante, but if another school can offer something we can't and that's high on a kid's list, I don't put that on our staff.
ding ding ding!!!! had a conversation with kyshawn king and Robert simmons III coach a few days ago, I was giving him a hard time about getting simmons to go ahead and commit so him and king could stay together at VT. He was telling me how much they liked Blacksburg but how they BOTH want/wanted to stay in florida but the situations at UF just didn't fit them and how king had to do what is best him individually and how VT was that. Point being at the end of the day UF couldn't sell what VT could and what we were selling outweighed "staying home" and whatever sales pitch UF had. Sure a slimeball can sell sand on the beach but that's not going to work to many times. Coaches have to be realistic in what they offer kids. Sometimes what the kid is looking for is not what we have available to offer at the same pace, volume, etc as another program. We love it when its in our favor, but refuse to understand it when its not.
Funny you mention this, LAhokie, because I've seen it talked about elsewhere; except as being "more than hypothetical". Know something, as well??
It's been discussed but idk how real it is
I see Mack having at least 3
So that means a 2020 recruit who redshirts will have him for one year as his head coach while he is on the field.
based on what? you keep spouting this as if it's fact, and in reality none of us know.
He was basing it on my guess of at least 3.
"at least three" vs "one year for a 2020 recruit who redshirts", though... unless "at least three" effectively means "definitely only exactly three" and i missed that middle school english lesson on connotation?
Based on the answer to the question I asked him.
UNC was 29th (2017), 32nd (2016), and 28th (2015) in recruiting rankings. 2018 is the outlier in all honesty. Yes they'll be a pain in our side in recruiting, but that's nothing new. I'm not labeling unc a powerhouse recruiting school based on their 4 2020 recruits that still have a whole year to back out.
It doesn't matter where they were under an old staff. Would you point at Fuente's first years and call any of them an outlier as compared to Frank's classes? I find it hard to believe anyone would make that argument.
They focused on heavily recruiting, which is already showing dividends. We haven't addressed significant recruiting shortcomings on our staff. It couldn't matter less what UNC did on the trail in 2015. What they have no will make getting talent in Blacksburg more difficult for us.
Unless you have inside information (which you don't) then I don't know how you can say things like "our staff is sitting on their hands" or "we haven't addressed significant shortcomings". Please tell us what you KNOW this staff hasn't tried to do to land the recruits UNC has signed. All you're doing is saying "well we didn't get Recruit A so our staff must be the reason why" which is ignorant.
I just pointed out that the 2018 signing class wasn't typical of UNC's football recruiting, which in hindsight I should have looked up because they were ranked 20th. Every year they're ranked right there with us and we have been competing with them to sign players, this is nothing new. I just don't think Mack Brown is going to take them to another level. I don't see them consistently being top 15 recruiting program. Also as I've pointed out previously, our recruiting rankings(regardless of the coach) have been pretty consistent for a very long time. Low 20's to low 30's with 2016 being our outlier. I'm a realist. I don't see that changing. When we start to have more success on the field, I can see us getting into the top 20 every now and then, but I think we have limitations as a program and school that will keep us from being a consistent top 15 recruiting school. I just find it ridiculous when you blindly accuse the staff off "sitting on their hands" when you have zero clue.
Kinda too early to be thinking about it.
Oh true
Willing to bet money 2 of em aint 4*s when its all said and done
We're were sitting with only one 4 star last spring. That changed vastly over the course of the year.
Hyatt will be a 4*, and Powell is right on the cusp right now. Ethan West and Ray Grier are not 4* talents. I'm really impressed with what Mack is is doing, but the gap is not as large as it seems right now.
Speaking of Powell's, Antwuan Powell is going to be a 4* DE when its all said and done. I know you mentioned it before, but gotta get that guy apart of HokieNation soon.
Not depressing at all signing day 10 months away and a full season to play first
I know we all joke about if Stars really matter ( they mos def do) but take a look at the link below, some HS students created a fake player out of thin air(Blake Carrienger, 6'6, 315 lb offensive tackle ) and said he had offers from UGA and Bama. Both sites Rivals & 247 automatically made a profile for the player and rated the guy 3 stars. They got catfished.
https://www.reddit.com/r/CFB/comments/aqh50l/hs_students_create_fake_recruit_247_and_rivals/
Florida State just offered him. Could really use the depth on the OL.
Pass
lets hope so. lol
I hear he's ranked only a couple of spots behind George P. Burdell.
In that same vein, my dad has always told me Ima Pigg was a favorite to win homecoming queen at Tech in the 70's.
Embedded for ease.
Reminds me of the story of Kevin Hart (not the comedian) who said he had offers from a couple D-1 schools and held a press conference in his high school gym to announce he was committing to Cal yet he didn't even have a scholarship from Cal lolol
Clicky clicky
I remember that. Did he really think that is gonna work
In his defense, apparently he went to a camp somewhere, i forget where, and the school said they were "seriously looking at him". He got super excited and returned home thinking he was offered. Then found out there was no offer and he was embarrassed because literally nobody from there has ever played D1 ball, so started to lie to save face. It snowballed when his coach and school started making press about his now "offers". He was trying not to disappoint anyone.
From what I heard he was a pretty nice guy.
Didn't Houshon Gaines commit to Florida because he had an "offer" from a fake Florida coach?
Not that it really matters to anyone here but French's post about his old coach sparked a bit of ire in me about this portion of the article which is 100% horseshit.
Dave Hart made Fernley athletics what it was. He dragged the school kicking and screaming and in the end 2 father's who thought their kids were the be all, end all decided he wasn't good enough to coach their kids. So they started raising hell. They couldn't get Coach Hart removed by petition or request so they went political and got on the school board and led the way to firing him. Then they brought in a win-at-all-cost coach that had promised them that he would bring his star QB and players from his old school with him, which isn't allowed. These two assholes then embroiled the school in a mess for the remaining time until Hodges left and this whole thing with Kevin happened to which Hodges claims innocence but never once interacted with a single person on any college staff during the whole thing. Dude is slimy AF. The two asshole fathers eventually were removed from the school board and their kids barely cracked JC ball.
Dave Hart was one of the best people in the community and he genuinely cared. He played smash mouth football but essentially believed in HS ball a simplified playbook run to perfection was a recipe for success. Here are some lies:
Complete bullshit. Dave Hart was the one that established and developed the weight training program. When the school refused to fund it he raised the funds himself with the help of the team. I know because I knocked doors for it. We did the same thing for field lights a year later and got those as well. The team was in the weight room every day. It was rudimentary but it was something. And one of those fathers, way back when I was playing with his oldest son, would regularly complain about kids working out on their own off hours claiming hazard and liability, even though we were trying to become stronger as a team. But he was already making his case even then about Coach Hart not being fit for the job.
more bullshit. The town had never been a strong sports community in anything (except for softball which my sister-in-law coached and has won multiple state championships. she's a legit badass). The years before his removal were some of the least athletic crop of boys ever and then Fernley got an Amazon fulfillment center and an influx of families. There was a strong upswing in talent in the intermediate school sport level and then before they got to HS Coach Hart was removed.
although we played run first we had a healthy passing package and would average 60% run/40% pass per game. This is complete lies.
Still true to this day. It's a small town in the middle of the high desert for fuck sake. Moreover, other than Bishop Gorman in Vegas very few kids from anywhere in Nevada get to D1 at all. I'll give you a mindblowing stat. I was the first kid from there to attend a university East of the Mississippi and graduate. It's a small town in rodeo country, people don't tend to venture too far away.
Dyrell Roberts has been an assistant coach at Norfolk State for the past 2 years (receivers/special teams). Would be nice to see guys like him continue to move up and eventually make it back here. He'd probably be a pretty effective recruiter. He's from the 757 and has now coached/recruited there the past 2 years, he's been a part of the program, and he always had the personality for it. Plus he was a top recruit himself, so he can relate to the players thought process. Hopefully Fuente isn't against considering old Beamer players for the staff down the line.
Dyrell Roberts is a great dude and is crazy passionate about the sport. Also, shameless plug, I tackled him a few times when we played Smithfield, so I bought his jersey when I came to Tech. But be careful, people get awfully spooked when you mention wanting to have someone with VT ties come coach for us.
Yea that's why I laid out his resume before I even suggested it. Was avoiding the "LeT's BRinG In A CoACh wiTH No EXperIEnCe" response as much as I could.
I've never seen a negative comment about Justin Hamilton, Cody Grimm, or Jack Tyler being on the VT staff. Same for the hiring of Mark Diethorn, who is a VT grad. The first 3 guys are getting experience and working their way up and Diethorn worked for Florida, Pitt, and the Steelers over the course of a decade before being hired at VT. People are receptive to having Hokies on the staff but it doesn't mean you competely disregard how they fit with the current coaching staff or their coaching experience.
It's one thing to discuss if VT should consider Loren Johnson (10 years at Highland Springs and a lot of success at the high school level) or even mention Dyrell Roberts (2 years at Norfolk State and building his resume). It's another to seemingly want a staff of Deangelo Hall, Kam Chancellor, Brandon Flowers (how many DB coaches are we going to have anyway?), Brendan Hill, Michael Vick, Sam Rogers, Michael Brewer, and Danny Coale. It's an added bonus if we have a successful coach with VT ties, but I'd point out that it's not guarantee of success as we have had mixed results with former players on staff- Torrian Gray was excellent, Cornell Brown didn't meet expectations, Shane was not viewed that favorably during his time here, and Kevin Jones didn't seem to leave a significant mark from his position.
Strong opponent of the 'don't hire former players just b/c they're former players' view here., and I totally agree.
I'm all for hiring former players (especially on defense) as long as they have coaching experience that justifies the move. Neither Mike Vick nor D-hall has ever coached or been a GA at the college level (to my knowledge). While I'm sure they have sound foundation for coaching and could develop the skills, that does not mean that should be immediately tapped for a role as one of the 10 coaches. They can be hired in some sort of other capacity (GA, Support Staff, etc) where they are mentored in coaching, not playing.
Grimm/Tyler/Jham are getting experience in the coaching world, and if the staff thinks they're the right fit, then they should by all means be extended an offer.
People (myself included) get annoyed, not spooked, that so many posters suggest popular VT alumni who played whatever position is in need of a coach; even if said alumni has never coached a day in his life.
Being a VT alumni is a positive. Having played that position is a positive. However, it would be an atrocious decision to hire someone like Eddie Royal (as an example) to coach WRs at VT because Eddie Royal has zero coaching experience.
Shawn Witten for the win! Has been HC at his high school forever.
Have always been a Shawn Witten fan. Kid had some hands.
Hiring Frank Beamer worked out pretty well for us.
He was a HC before VT he had experience.
Y'all remember him? VT legacy, and was considered a big loss because of the state of the OL at the time of his recruitment. Oh, how times change. That being said, if we have room I wouldn't be against giving him a shot.
Has he played a complete season at FSU? He has been hurt ALOT.
And not played well when he has played.
He has played relatively well (by far their highest OL when in there) but that's not saying a lot considering the rest of their line. OL is certainly a position where the performance of those around you will affect your performance. I'd be willing to be that if he was surrounded by solid players, he would really excel. Take for me all day if he's not taking a scholarship away from a serviceable DB or CB. Would immediately be our highest ceiling OL excluding maybe Nester.
You can never have too many 4-star or better offensive lineman.
Also we could have him and Nestor anchor half of our line for the next two years.
Would be the only player in the team with a 5* rating from any of the major recruiting sites.
Before anyone says Hunter, 247 absorbed scout at the end of that cycle so his scout ranking became his 247 ranking
Had his chance. No thanks O line already stacked
And when was the last time a VT fan ever uttered those words?
don't recall seeing this shared anywhere
one of these things is not like the other...
Yeah, one of those teams had a victory against a top 15 VT team last season.
3 of those teams beat us last year. Idk our ranking at the time.
Louisville seems like a win win for both Kumah and for that football program. They need bodies badly, and he could be targeted a lot.
Is he really a target for ND and PSU?
PSU just had a couple receivers transfer, also with McSorley leaving and them breaking in a new QB, I'm sure having a fairly sure handed big body receiver would help ease that transition
Who cares?
Louisville seems like the only decent option. Don't think he'd get as much PT as he did here at ND or PSU, and Cincy and ODU would be a sizable downgrade. I don't see him going all the way to TTU.
Good for him.
Is it bad that I feel like half of his list is him trolling VT or taking a shot at Fuente? ND (big win), ODU (upset win), and Cincy (Bowl win). I'm not saying that his offers wouldn't have merit, just seems strange that those 3 also fit in with Penn State, Texas Tech, and Louisville. Although, I will say that ND is still ND as compared to the other programs.
I just think regardless of school choice this is simply a grass is greener decision. He won't be the last kid to think recruiting = day-to-day interaction or the fact that a school wants you to attend generates different feelings than when you have to earn your spot. Seeing other schools first hand plays into the grass is greener feeling.
other side of the coin - could be teams that reached out to him because they saw him first hand this season and liked what they saw
Were gonna need a whole couple threads just for the discussions on UNC and the ability of mack brown at this rate
Recruiting discussion is always going to be tied to the schools we compete most often against. Right now UNC, PSU and Ncst fit that bill.
I'm just joking on it feels like everytime i look at a recruiting thread its just arguments over macks age and stuff like that and nothing else
Look! We all can agree Larry Fedora was pouring Gasoline on the Dumpster Fire that IS UNC football, and that fire was helping to keep us warm. So of Course we are going to be mad when UNC hires Mack Brown to contain the fire. So now we need to open the check book and pay the heating company (assistants/support staff), but Firefighter Mack is approaching retirement and that Dumpster Fire will return, and when it does we will be Hot!
Comes to the recruiting page after seeing "19 updates," only to realize we're still talking about Mack Brown/UNC, proceeds to leave again:

February Recruiting thread part 4 =
Someone mentions Mack Brown recruiting well
Hokiefireman, channeling his inner playground: "Yeah, well my dad (Fuente) could beat up your dad! Your dad is so old!!!"
Sure because I talked about how Fuente was a better recruiter, right? Nope I didn't. In fact what I did was went back and gathered actual facts and looked at UNC historical recruiting and asked why will Mack be more of a threat than any other UNC coach who has historical done better than Tech already?
MFW all Mack Brown.
via GIPHY
Jimmy Butler, Jaimie Foxx and Ahmed Hill must be distant cousins, if not estranged brothers.
At least last time we were pretty self aware and just created a "Hatin on James Franklin" thread. Who thought we'd forget about that guy so quickly?
I think +52 (correction) is the closest I ever got to going plaid...LOL (Big thanks to all my peers)
Came in expecting to see more of a debate on Mack Brown, thanks for the "actual" recruiting news senjohnblutarsky (you get a leg for moving us forward)
All I will say is Virginia 2020 class is pretty over hyped. Look for VT to go outside the state a bit more this year.
Fuente has been going out of state a ton since he arrived. We have 23 commits in our 2019 class and only 7 are VA kids. 2018 had 7 out of 26 kids being VA kids. Say what you will about our recent recruiting classes but I remember pretty frequently, game commentators would bring up how many kids on our team were from the State of Virginia. I hope Fuente and company can keep making positive strides with Virginia HS football coaches and try and stop all the top VA talent leaving to PSU, FSU or SEC.
Getting top VA kids as been a struggle for over a decade in fact in 2003 I think not a single top 10 VA kid came to Tech.
I'm not saying he isnt going to go after them this year but there is a rating inflation more than most years with this years class. Some are over rated by quite a bit. The same talent kids in other states are more realistically rated. It will all sort it self out after camps but right now it's off
I genuinely dont understand the obsession with getting VA kids. Go get the best players because it's not like any kids from VA give a fuck about VT.
From a strategy standpoint, it should be low(er) cost to recruit VA. Given limited resources, it makes sense to recruit nearby (assuming there's enough talent). Also, it's worth noting every top program/quasi-blue-blood owns in-state recruiting - that may be more of symptom of success than a cause of success, tough to say.
That said, if we think we can get better talent recruiting Charlotte than Richmond, then we should focus more energy/resources on Charlotte.
This reminds me when Greenberg was coaching for VT. He NEVER wanted to play any school in Virginia other than UVA. He wasnt shy about it either, calling it a lose lose senerio. I remember the flack he got from it.
You play other schools in the state for exposure, good relations and to be able to say "we run VA" which helps in more ways than one. Recruiting VA kids is really important for the future if VT and the football program. Its not difficult to understand why investing in people from your Home state where you're located should be a high priority. Investing in the home state will pay dividends later, just trust me on this one. Its why coaches try and build relations with high school coaches at coaching clinics.
I don't disagree with the logic. I would say that your region is more important than your state.
Obviously, some of your region is your state, but you can't ignore than Raleigh, Greensboro, Charlotte, parts of TN and OH are closer to your school than parts of Va. You have to combine various factors like where is the talent, demographics of the future, realistic reach (based on your resources) into your approach.
Selling out for your state has risks along with benefits. What happens when the talent is elsewhere?
Investing in the region will help us win later even if that isn't always Va.

Apparently we are interested in this QB, has us listed as one of his top 10, but Rivals is predicting him for Michigan.
Just visited yesterday actually. Planning on reclassifying to 2020. He really enjoyed his visit but Canadian players, for whatever reason, generally are drawn to Michigan.

They like being able to go to Windsor and gamble it up and drink at 19.
And don't forget going to the Windsor Ballet.
kid looks like Macklemore pre thrift shop.
I think he looks like Kyle Guy from UVA...he's got the hair.
Oh I hated that Guy!
Some guys require Cookout on campus, others Tim Horton's.
Mike Danna committed to Michigan unfortunately
As a Michigan kid that has to be his childhood school.
Danna-it
(I'll see myself out)
So, I noticed Wheatley's brother is in the transfer portal. He's a TE. Not really a position of need. But, I did find it curious he'd also be ditching their father's alma mater.
His father just took the head gig at Morgan State. Probably had something to do with the transfer
Michigan is getting some crystal balls for Blake Corum now...
Some meaning 1 in this case.
How many crystal balls should someone have before I am allowed to say "some" instead of a literal number?
1 = a
2 = a couple
3 = a few or some
This advice is free an not to be confused with professional consultation \s
At least two - "some crystal balls" is clearly plural
Had a bad day, sorry.
Or, you could just admit you were wrong and not lash out at those who point it out.
The difference between "one" and "some" in this instance causes a massive difference in the message being conveyed. One CB is relatively insignificant (unless it is one of the more "in the know" experts). Some CBs indicate that at least two insiders have new information. It is not just about semantics. Different words have different meanings and convey different messages.
If anyone is being Hooish, it is you.
Damnnnnnnnn why u had to burn him like that my mon?
This is a peak off-season thread right here.
Bruh you literally ASKED
This is 3 minutes of time reading I'll never get back!!!π
I don't know why this got downvoted. I think he is trying to say Uva fans correct him when he says they had a few fans at their spring games instead of a fan. Am I interpreting this correctly?
Had a bad day, sorry.
Oooof you have gone full on LOLUva fan
Also you can't cry about losing Turkey legs when you're downvoting us in return
Had a bad day, sorry.
Ohhh you're pulling a me card I try that strategy before but I love these people more than my ego so I'm back
I would give you a hug if I could. Or a beer...or something. Take five and revisit the thread and you will see there were no ill intentions here.
The numbers always work I guess π€·ββοΈ
This gif is overused but perfectly reflects my feelings after my initial comment
If you had had better writing skills, I might have missed you.
People who are obsessed with grammar are called Grammar Nazis, not communists. Please judge appropriately.
Sincerely, this Grammar Nazi
The Constitution guaranteeing Freedom of Speech means the government can't restrict what you say or what topics you want to talk about. It has nothing to do with giving you an excuse for misrepresenting a situation by mangling the English language.
TBF, grammatically speaking, "some" is an adjective clarifying "crystal balls." "Some" is defined as unspecified amount of a subclass being at least greater than zero. So, some crystal balls is any subset amount of crystal balls in the totality including 1, 2 or any fraction (although fractions are nonsensical in this case).
The adjective that may be singular is modifying a clearly plural noun, though. Don't be such a communist.
So maybe I just missed this, did Aaron Willis officially decommit at some point?
I just noticed this also. He had Virginia Tech commit in his bio on twitter but it's not there anymore
I think he is just blessed about all the offers he has
So top 14??
Committed to having a top 14 commitment list.
Huh..well I think anyone paying attention knew that there was a long way to go to signing him in '21, but this didn't even last as long as my pessimistic expectations suspected..
He has not decommitted.
Forget about this puppy. But don't worry, the number always work out!
And back to the
45 man QB room we were all hoping for.Is it required that recruiting threads have at least one off the rail agruement?
Yes.
A chain of name puns is an acceptable alternative.
As is tradition.
Kind of like cake being the best thing for special occasions am I right?
Cake anagrams to better than pie

What on Earth is an agruement??????? Don't you mean "argument"?????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????????

Holy shit! Check it out, Joe. There was a sale on question marks at Costco. This guy bought em all!
well, duh. They were out of exclamation points after KennyHokie
excuse you, my question marks are handmade, artisanal question marks
Artisanal anagrams to Art is Anal (didn't even need software for that one!)
Quit being all artsy fartsy
(EDIT: How many times a day do you think Joe logs on, reads our stupidity, rolls his eyes, and says out loud "why do I even bother...?")
I tend to think of it more as Joe logging on amidst the chaos of his life, cracking up, and thinking "this is totally worth it"
Thank you! I see my comment above as the thorough, thoughtful analysis that makes TKPC worth paying!
You're welcome!
Let's try to get this thing back on track...
We failed to make the top 8 for 2020 LB Antoine Sampah #1 player in VA βββββ
But did make the top 11 for 2020 DE/OLB Fadil Diggs ββββ
Bummer about Sampah but honestly would rather use dedicate resources other places if he isn't interested.
Diggs, Powell, Baron, and Hardy are all so critical to this class. Have to pick up at least two of them along with a few talented DT's.
Would be stunned if we got two of them
But which ones would you be least stunned to get?
Far and away Powell, but that says more about the other three than it does about him.
No chance on Baron?
Going to UT with his dad
:C
Feel like Diggs, Baron, and Hardy are are all major longshots so I wouldn't get my hopes up. I certainly hope we can pull one of those three and will congratulate the staff accordingly if they can pull that off.
Temple??? One of these is not like the others
Maybe he didn't hear the Manny Diaz news?
Any recruits FB or BB, take in the game last night?
What are the chances that we loose out on Chris Tyree because he went to LOLUVA?
I've seen some rumblings over on the Saber about his visits to C'Ville and a snippet of an article referencing how he is their #1 target for this next recruiting cycle - along with the fact that Mendenhall has been forging a relationship with Tyree's head coach.
Lol nah
I am sure he is their #1 target. I just doubt they are his #1 school.
I'd put the percentage of him staying in state at about zero.
Multiply the number of times they've beaten us in the past 15 years by 5. That's their chances.
any info on j'wan Evan's who just committed?
PWO? 5' 10" 175 lb rb from East Rockingham High in Elkton, Va. Just what I've found on the net. Don't see a 247 page.
Who had a scholarship offer to ODU.
Feels good to be a big dog π /s
Getting a kid to walk on over going to a school with a scholarship while not flashy is good selling jobs by the staff.
Here is his Hudl page. Local to me but I didn't get to see him play any because his school is Class 2 and my kid's school is Class 3.
