Win those you Should Even when you are challenged
Buzzketball takes last place Pitt on the road. This should a rather overmatched conference opponent but it all depends on which version of the Hokies comes out on the court. Will we see the team that moved the ball, played tenacious defense and seemed to be in control of the majority of the game against Georgia Tech or will we see the offensively challenged, a step slow on defense, down and out team that showed up against Clemson? That goes a long way to decide who leaves the arena today with a victory. While no conference opponent can be overlooked, this should not be a game that the Hokies allow to remain close. The Hokies absolutely have to win this game to keep itself in the current rankings posture as the Panthers are not good enough to strengthen the Hokies schedule much if the Hokies take a loss.
This will be the Fifteenth meeting between the Hokies and Panthers. The series is currently tied 7-7. The Hokies have won the last three matchups. The Panthers at 12-13 and 2-10 in conference have had little to celebrate since conference play began. Their two conference wins are surprisingly over Louisville and Florida State, both at home, so it shows the Panthers can get focused enough to take down better teams.
The Panthers are coached by former Duke Assistant Head Coach Jeff Capel, who is in his first season trying to put the Panthers program back together after a couple of terrible seasons for Pitt due to bad coaching decisions and poor recruiting. The Panthers came out in the out of conference and surprised many with how competitive they were in such a short time under Capel. Capel has a 187-121 record as a head coach with two previous stops at VCU and Oklahoma. He then spent seven seasons sitting next to Coach K at Duke which likely prepared him to quickly incorporate key freshman into his team with how often Duke turns over players.
Defensively, the Panthers rely on the 2-3 zone, mainly to try to mask deficiencies in their defensive capabilities. Pitt is currently holding opponents to 32% shooting from behind the arc but struggles more inside where opponents are hitting almost 45% of their shots. They do rebound fairly well which limits second chance opportunities. They are well disciplined, and do not foul often or allow much in the way of transition baskets.
Offensively, Pitt has made significant strides over the last two seasons. They rarely turn the ball over, currently 34th in the nation. Coach Capel favors a progressive looking motion offense, utilizing multiple wings rather than bigs, running essentially a five guard set. One area of focus for the Panthers is utilizing pick and rolls for penetration into the lane. It is a major part of their offense.
Panthers Backcourt
Xavier Johnson (#1) 6'3, 190 Lbs Freshman Guard from Northern Virginia comes in averaging 16.6 PPG, 3.9 RPG, 4.5 APG and 1.2 SPG. He is shooting 39% from outside, 46% from inside, and 81% at the free throw line. In any other league, Johnson would be the leading candidate for Freshman of the Year. He is known for his quick first step and ability to drive inside.
Trey McGowens, (#2) 6'3, 185 Lbs Freshman guard out of Hargrave Military Academy is averaging 12.2 PPG, 3.2 RPG, 1.8 APG and 2.1 SPG. He is shooting 29% from behind the arc and 47% inside. McGowens has been nothing short of phenomenal so far for the Panthers. He has stepped right in and become known as much for his great individual defense, causing havoc with opposing teams primary ball handler than his scoring.
Jared Wilson-Frame, (#4) 6'5, 220 lbs Senior Guard is averaging 12 PPG, 4.9 RPG, and 1.5 APG. He is an amazing outside shooter for the Panthers which is not a good thing for opponents. He is averaging 40% on seven attempts per game. He is also shooting 45% inside. He is a terrific free throw shooter hitting from the line at an 81% clip.
Au'Diese Toney, (#5) 6'6, 210 Lbs, is the third Freshman contributing important minutes to the Panthers so far this season. He is averaging 8.3 PPG, 5.8 RPG, and .5 APG. Toney is shooting 25% from outside, 42% inside, and 71% from the line.
Malik Ellison, (#3) 6'6, 215 Lbs, Junior Guard is averaging 6.8 PPG, 3.9 RPG, and 1.4 APG. Ellison is shooting 14% from outside, 49% inside, and 51% from the line.
Panthers Frontcourt
Terrell Brown, (#21) 6'10, 230 Lbs Sophomore Forward is averaging 5.9 PPG and 4.8 RPG. He comes in shooting 50% from the inside the perimeter and 65% of his free throws. If he can stay out of foul trouble, expect the Panthers to utilize his size quite often against the Hokies. He may see more floor time than normal because of Blackshear being on the court.
Kene Chukwuka, (#15), 6'9, 225 Lbs Junior Forward is averaging 3.8 PPG and 3.5 RPG.
What to expect from Pitt?
The Panthers rely on a rotation of seven to nine players, with the starting five predominantly freshman with a renewed focus this year of getting to the basket, as they only hit about 7 three pointers per game. This is a much different offense than most the Hokies have seen this season. One area they must be careful of is to avoid reach in fouls as the Panthers guards drive into the paint. The Panthers force opponents into 20+ fouls per contest so far this season albeit against mostly inferior defensive skillsets. This also contributes to the almost 24 free throw attempts per contest the Panthers are currently averaging.
Pitt has six players that average more than 2 fouls per game and against much less athletic, aggressive offensive players than the Hokies bring to the floor. If that happens today, they will be forced to rely more on their bench players which would be a huge boost for the Hokies. Scoring goes down, talent goes down, and pressure goes up.
The Panthers will look to expose weaknesses in the lane. Don't be surprised to see quite a few alley oops or high lobs over the top to a big under the basket for an easy score after initial dribble drive penetration by a guard. This will usually be with Johnson in the game, so getting him in foul trouble could simplify things on both ends of the court.
The Hokies
Tech needs to drive inside to get fouled. This is a team with very similar energy and speed so this likely comes down to execution. Tech needs to be prepared to do so at a very high level. Even with Pitt coming in on an eight game skid many of those contests were very competitive. With Robinson still out, this makes it a lot closer.
The Hokies defensively need to prevent interior passing and also disrupt dribble penetration from the Pitt guards. They need to be aware of quite a few back door follow up drives by Pitt shooters. This is one of the games where Horne and his knack for shutting down the baseline could be very important as the Panthers use the baseline drive quite often.
Ahmed Hill and Ty Outlaw need to have a good day at the office tonight. Shooting from the arc needs to probably be around 45% for the Hokies to stretch a decent lead to a blowout. This could be one of the few ACC games where the bench gets involved.
Defensively this game is fairly balanced but unless Pitt plays a big significantly more than normal, Blackshear needs to have a monster game underneath on both ends of the court.
In Closing
Pitt is going to look to pound the paint either by pass or by drive. The Hokies have to find a way to keep the ball out of the interior. Having Horne available even for short bursts is a huge plus in this game. This is one of the only ACC teams the Hokies face with such a focus on scoring inside the perimeter. The Hokies have to prevent Wilson-Frame from having a huge game from the perimeter.
The offense has to be operating at a fluid clip. The Hokies should have mismatches at almost every position in terms of talent on the offensive end so using that to their advantage and getting the Pitt guards in foul trouble could play a key role in a Hokies win.
Hokies overcome some early sloppy play and win 73-65.

Comments
Let's Go
Hokies!
Will be an interesting game. Can see us winning easily, but Pitt has a way of uglying games up.
Not that this game is a must win in terms of season goals, but it is a must win to keep pace in the race for the #4 ACC tournament seed. Louisville and FSU won today, and with their remaining schedules I am not sure we can afford more than one or two more losses. With Duke on the schedule, I'd prefer to not lose winnable games
Another sloppy start on offense so far
Huge 3 by Blackshear. Gonna need him to dominate today
Blackshear with a 3 and then a step back. Lord he's grown since hes been at VT
Edit then a beautiful dime
You're gonna need more edits, lol. Blackshear putting up a clinic.
DAMN HILL!!!
MED HILL MED HILL
Nice dunk by hill!! Love the emotion there.
Didn't realize Pitt was 2-10 in conference. Really need this W today
Defensive intensity and emotion are definitely there today! Just gotta keep our foot on the gas for the whole game.
BLACKSHEAR! He's feeling it today. This is a matchup he can dominate
Trey Blackshear?
Would like to see us go into half by 17 or more.
up by 11, 12:09 to go in the 1st. time to finish them off. make this game be over by halftime.
Gotta keep extending this lead! Blackshear is playing awesome thus far!
They placed the microphones in the crowd very badly. That girl needs to shut up
Damn so much for pressing that lead.
LOL at that bullshit chant! The defender's arm was touching both of Hill's arms at the same time during the shot attempt.
Might have got away with backcourt violation
Great seeing Horne back in the court.
Man we are playing fantastic defense so far. If Bede could hit an open 3 we'd have a huge lead right now
Jesus these refs are callling a soft game. Very little contact on several calls for both teams
One-handed held ball...impressive.
Bede is a poor man's Devin Wilson.
Seems like we've been shooting better than 20 points.
(I think it's the
threesBlackshear)Too many missed free throws
Bede, woof🤦♂️
Can we go back to NAW running the point
Bede's shot makes my eyes bleed
Pitt is scrapping to get back in this game and we appear to be letting them.
You're telling me thats not a flagrant/tech?
We are ASS when NAW is on the bench.
Holy sh** can we hit a 3?
It's amazing how much this offense just shuts off.
Up 11 and will most likely be behind at half
NAW with two completely BS offensive foul calls
The first one was horseshit. The second one was legit.
They were both terrible. The dude was twisting and falling over before NAW even got to him... By definition that is a defensive foul
NAW comes in for one play, picks up his 3rd
Just awful
LOL dude is already falling before NAW gets there & they call a charge
We must not have paid our ACC dues or something.
We need to get Outlaw some shots
Bede probably wouldn't see the court on many other ACC teams this year... And he's our starting PG
If you want to know why we suck with the ball, that's why
He can't be the starting PG next year.
He's almost halfway through his college career while learning from maybe the best PG in college basketball. He hasn't shown improvement since he got here. I hope he proves me wrong, but I really don't think he should get any minutes for us next season.
hold up! no, he's not five. but when you say we suck, offer a solution. he put us up by five right before the half. was that a suck play with the ball?
NAW do better?
He put up 2 points the whole game. That's suck.
Also had 7 assists and a huge block.
But whatevs.
They won, so, you know, good 'nuf.
This is like the GT away game all over again Pitt uglying the game up to stay in it
This team is literally garbage without 5.
So the team who beat NC state and Gt is garbage? Ok
Isn't it funny how perspective has shifted?
NC State beat themselves and GT just happens to suck more than us, but that game too could have gone either way. You really feel confident about any remaining games? At this point it's praying we beat ACC bottom dwellers.
when you beat ACC bottom dwellers it makes you a top dweller.
I know we're gonna give Virginia hell Monday and Tech can beat ND FSU and Miami
Also if you think the team is garbage then why are you watching them
Them being garbage doesn't mean I don't want them to win lol
Well they are about
If the team is this bad without one player, then they are not a good team.
I mean they didn't look all that bad until NAW picked up his second,
Good-ish D keeping us in the game
Or it's just the sport of basketball. See UConn 2011 or UConn 2014 maybe sprinkle in every LeBron Cavs team. Anybody have any other examples of a great player whose team falls apart without them?
I feel like Bede's mind is tying up his legs. Trying too hard and just making simple mistakes
Can't figure out how to watch with these awful black outs, but Laze is making it seem like every foul call is horrendous
http://sports24.fun/fox?id=prime
Here ya go. & he's right, there have been some egregious calls both ways
Similar to GT game so far. Up by 9 and couldn't get over that 10 pt hump. Pitt starts playing with emotion and comes back from being down 10 and we can't hit anything and miss great opportunities when Pitt gives the ball away.
We eat zone defense for breakfast
Screw 5 PG's at once. I want 5 KBJ's at once, lol.
I dont know much about basketball, but I dont get it. Kabongo comes in, gets a nice drive and assist, then gets benched. We have deadweight bede out there doing nothing
Great finish by Bede!
Let's go Bede! Huge coast-to-coast there right before the half!
Finally Bede taking it to the hole! He's gonna have to do a lot more of that for us to win this game.
1st Half: Great start, crappy middle and good end
Bede is good ya'll, just give him a chance.
#trusttheprocess
via GIPHY
If he can do that a little more often it will make a huge difference for this team
Bede should drive more
That was a great move at the end by Bede. Good killer instinct to drive like that. He needs to do that more often, because his passive approach to offense hurts more than helps
Bede and "killer instinct" lolololol
Sorry, I'm just a little bitter at him. But ya, that was something we all want to see more of.
exactly, I think he can do it... he just has to do it! I saw JRob coaching him up earlier in the game. is he 5? no. but he is what we have now. he needs some confidence. hopefully he will find that "good killer instinct" going forward.
I don't think NAW has played awful, but I do think this stretch without 5 has really hurt his stock (at least in my book). I don't blame the kid for leaving if he's told he'll be a top 20 pick, but he doesn't seem ready to me
1000% agree. His limitations have been exposed during this stretch.
SI has him at like 18 on their big board
My blood pressure is at 2016 MBB levels and I don't like it.
Let's see a few more minutes of Kabongo to start the half
Ka-Bingo Ka-Bongo Ka-bango
I now second this. Threeeeee!
Wow what a terrible call
We are about to get screwed. They will put it on Med.
Refs starting to take over.
KABONGO
Lot of fouls being called on VT rn
LOL we have 5 fouls to their 0 fouls 4 minutes into the half. That's absolutely ridiculous
Whistles all one way on a short bench as is
Chance to go up 7 and Bede throws it away
Definitely bad but at least he didnt stop like he normally does just to turn it over later
Kobongo playing big rn
Get one after the shot but moving screen much before that on their big?
These give aways are killing us.
Man it looks like the coaches are screaming at Bede to do something when he moves the ball up the court.
Where is the technical foul? All that screaming at the official but nothing
hook and hold too.
Ahmed "contested inbound corner three" Hill
No way that turnover was clean. This is garbage.
Missed the hook and hold. Dont know why that wasnt reviewed.
What the hell was the bench warning for? Lol did buzz cut one of these refs off in traffic this morning? Jesus
Bench warning was likely for questioning all the non calls on our offensive end but no techs for screaming at officials after legit calls
Our ability to melas points after they miss is horrendous this game.
4th on NAW with basically 10 mind left
Not good
Sounds like they corrected it, NAW still with 3, which is good
Sigh, and now he picks up his 4th.
fortunately not on NAW... correction... while I was typing this, he got his 4th
Only been happening every time down
I know I'm late to the party - any streaming options for those of use where ESPN is blacked out?
You can always check reddit for mbb streams
So I guess the hook and hold isn't a thing anymore.
I've seen it three times by Pitt super obvious to everyone so far this half
No way, both those defenders grzbbed NAW as he went up. Amazed Buzz hasnt lost his S already
Agree. A lot of our ball handling TO's have been uncalled fouls. They can bump, reach and grab with impunity.
3 offensive fouls on NAW, could argue 2/3 should've gone the other way
Make that 3/4...
this is "beginning" to look like bullsh!t
That dude was far from set
I'm no basketball expert. But that guy was moving. That's a block.
need for Outlaw to step it up these last 6 minutes
right on time
Got to get this over 10 and suck some life out of Pitt
Kabongooooooooooooooo
If there's giftory...
#Blackashear@7:15
10: Twice as good as 5
KABONGOOOOOOOO. This kid has some serious dawg in him
Kabongo getting some good minutes and doing well!!!
Nice behind the back to the wrong team.
Love that KBJ three where he pointed, got the defender to take half a step back and then drained the 3.
Yeah that was savage af. Reminded me of something Embiid might do.
Rumors of Kabongo's death have been greatly exaggerated.
Soft call on Kabongo there
Just never stops
Leading by twelve with only 2 free throws under 5 minutes
Guy cant dribble foul on blackshear come on
Holy shit these fouls are fucking terrible calls
HOLY FUCK
Capel learned those check writing skills from Coach K.
Well that's not a good sequence by KBJ but can't deny the full product
Cmon. So close to putting this thing away but are keeping them just within reach.
Feel like we would be winning by 20 if the refs were making the correct calls. Definitely keeping Pitt in the game.
That whole sequence was bullshit. Our guy has possession and gets flattened no whistle Pitt three and now Blackshear with another foul on the offensive end that seems ghostly. Refs determined to foul us out
Lol can't breathe near Pitt or it's a foul
If we had as many points off of turnovers as they do this thing would be long over.
We need an Outlaw 3 to ice it
Missed the travel & then call another VERY soft foul on Kabongo. Jesus Christ dude fuck these refs
Wow both ends of the court three trips straight fouls on us. Seven straight calls on us.
Lol handcheck call under 3 min. Lil Jerry Heater is on 🔥
BALL DON'T LIE
Is there a foul every time they get the ball???
2, one isn't called
And no foul when blackshear is being tackled but again foul on us defensively
Foul on Bede there....?
Maybe better that outlaw is steady from 2
That was a shit eating grin for NAW and I fucking love it
NAW definitely has some dog in him.
Lol Pitt fans crying about officiating at this point is comical
It's what Pitt does.
Good one NAW. 💯
Hahaha. Handchecks on our end and NAW get ridden 65 feet down the court without a call
Seems like the refs need to cover.
But no technical there?
Pitt fans are incredibly annoying with their whining about the refs. A clear charge and they flip their shit.
NAW fouls out and now its possible to get within one score
Foot was in the restricted zone.... That's not a charge and now NAW is fouled out
I..... Didn't know they could review that.
You can review under 2 minutes. We learned this week you can't review goaltending under 2 minutes.
And what are they reviewing? Wow reversal by a heel
foot was on the line
This doesn't even feel like basketball anymore. Just waiting for the referees to arbitrarily call fouls.
DONT LEAVE YOUR FEET WHEN YOU PASS THE BALL. BAD THINGS ALWAYS HAPPEN
Oh wow they got it right.... I'm surprised
Wtf is this? Dude these refs.
The player with the most control, of anyone on the court, ends up with four offensive fouls today.
Whew, lucky break there
What a play by Bede
BEDE WITH THE MASSIVE BLOCK
BEDE!!!
LET'S GO BEDE!!!
Huge block by bede
Is the arc still applicable if he wasn't shooting?
Yes
Finish it NAW!!!
Surprised they didnt review bede on the jump ball after the block because he jumped from out of bounds so it should have been a dead ball
Whew...
Gutsy win. Nice job to get it done!!!
Man, the refs almost screwed us big time there. Hell of a job by our guys to finish that game out
20-5 FAM!!
If only NAW could have made those extra free throws my score would have almost been right on.....come on NAW
Wasn't pretty and it's taking more effort than you'd expect from a Top 25 team
But that's win #20 on the year.
I think we as fans discount how hard it is to lose one of your best players and adjust the rotation on the fly. Then throw in Horne was out. I think we're seeing a lot of growth from Wilkins and Kobongo though that will pay dividens in March if Robinson can come back
Gutsy win. Five on 8 and we still manage to prevail.
One of buzz's biggest wins!!
Injuries and in eligibility no problem! Offense of fouls on NAW no problem !
I don't know what the fuck I just watched. But I'll take a W.
Couldn't watch but followed on gamecast the last few minutes. Glad we won but that seemed incredibly frustrating. Also, I went to bet VT-5.5 but the line changed to -6 by the time I logged in and bet. So, yeah, fuck those refs for keeping it so close.
I'm proud of the way this team has persevered, and found ways to win with a diminished roster
a W by any other name is still a W. on the road in the ACC no less. good win!
No thanks to ESPN and Cox cable and whoever makes basketball deals, because I don't get to watch these games even though I pay both of those organizations for the very experience of watching these games, yet I'm not permitted to stream them when I'm not home.
I also have a VPN, but for some reason that doesn't seem to help.
Credit to both Buzz and the players that, somehow, no one fouled out of this game.
Missed it by that much.

Maxwell Smart kudos!
I grew up on Nick At Night before there was a TV Land.
I grew up with Get Smart on first-run network tv....but I'm old.
Agent 99 was my first girlfriend. Or maybe it was Mary Ann. Can't remember, but they were the first two.
Blackshear owns Pitt. He needs to let the football team borrow some of that magic.
who's your point guard...
BEDE: 2 points, 1 rebound, 7 assist, 2 steals, 1 block, 3 fouls, 3 turnovers
NAW: 9 points, 1 rebound, 3 assist, 1 steal, 0 blocks, 4 fouls, 3 turnovers
It comes down to the offensive production you get from the fifth guy on the floor when you sit Bede. Today Wilkins and Kabongo combined for nine points, three rebounds, a steal, an assist, three fouls and a turnover. Today was much different though because of the foul trouble that had NAW on the bench for 17 minutes less than his season average.
It's so weird seeing people bend over backwards in these game threads to fellate Bede despite him routinely playing sub-par ball.
On a much more positive note, KJB is playing lights-out (Exit Light, Enter Night?)
Bede assisted on 7 of the 20 baskets made tonight (minus the one he scored). That is pretty damn good to start.
He also came up with 2 steals, was effective at containing Xavier Johnson (committed 5 turnovers), and Bede only had 3 turnovers in a very physical game. He missed 3 shots - 2 were threes and he was fouled on the 3rd (KJ picked it up and scored).
I think everyone would love to see him be a better scorer and run the offense a little better, but he is a sophomore that played very limited minutes last year and is being thrust into a role that he seldom played before 5 went out. But the kid plays hard, is learning on the go, and from everyone who has insight into the program, is an extremely hard worker on and off the court.
I say we give him a break. It's not like he is doing anything different than what he was doing when 5 was playing - all the while we were lauding his defensive prowess.
yes, bede is still a very good on ball defender... everybody praises wilkins' offensive spark, but his defense was dreadful today and it seems like in general he just doesn't have quick feet. kabongo is interesting because he has hit open shots but has more athleticism
hopefully bede keeps taking the ball to the rim because good things happened when he did that today. he seems to have some sort of confidence issue now, but this team needs him so there's point in just constantly going in.
