Fortunately, unless the bottom drops out and we lose to ND or Miami along with both Duke and FSU, coupled with NC State winning all of their last 4 (where the toughest test is @FSU), we're going to finish with a top-7 seed, meaning we get a bye and our first opponent will be coming off a game the previous day.
Unfortunately, getting the 4-seed with its highly-desirable double-bye is only likely if we go 3-1 or better, with one of the wins coming @FSU. And when I say "likely", I mean we have a good chance unless there are some pretty big upsets. We'd need UVA to sweep Louisville; Syracuse to drop 2 out of 3 against Duke (home), UVA (home), and UNC (road); and FSU to lose @UNC. All of which is reasonable, if not likely.
I'm giving up on the double bye, get me whatever seed ends up facing UVA with Rob ready to play and I'll take it. We can beat them.
Yeah, the double bye is very unlikely at this point. Had we beaten Louisville in particular, it would be a different story.
If we beat Pitt, FSU, and Miami to finish at 12-6, the double bye is likely ours. Unfortunately, I think it's pretty unlikely we beat FSU. If we finish at 11-5, we'll probably be 6th or 7th. 10-8 and we'll be 7th unless NC State wins out.
VT has six days off before the FSU Game. VT seems to shoot better when they have fresh legs.
FSU is on a ridiculous 8 game winning streak right now and they have probably the biggest team in the country. They are enormous at every position. It's a horrible matchup against one of the best teams in the country over the last 4 weeks
Really big teams also have issues defending smaller teams. Throw in that they love to push their defense out and switch everything means there will be driving lanes for us. The thing that concerns me most there is that they are really good at getting to the free throw line. Could kill our depth. Especially Kabengele, dude draws the 7th most fouls per 40 min in college basketball and Blackshear has been known to foul.
With Zion likely out for Tuesday our chances of going 4-0 over the remaining games greatly improved.
from 0.0% to 0.9%
Obligatory
I think a 4-0 record with at least one win in the ACCT gets us at least a 5 seed if not a 4
Wins over Duke even without Zion is a top 10 team and a top 20 FSU. Both wins without J-Rob then he comes back for the tourney. He'll yeah that's a 4 seed easy.
I always post this website around this time of year
It's definitely one of my biggest sources of procrastination around March.
This is the greatest thing ever
And I'm wasting time......
Thanks!
(Cool site. )
Just get that Day 1 Bye so JRob has more time to come back before the real season starts
Sorry to break it to everyone, but this team is not going anywhere w/o J-Rob. This is why you need depth.
Its just a matter of opinion
True. We don't have 2 or 3 all ACC PGs on the bench. We suck.
😜
With or without 5, this team has earned a spot in the NCAA tournament. They call madnesses for a reason.
A 16 seed beat the number 1 overall seed just last year.
Really? I didn't know that
This post has not aged well
Off topic - I hate the whole double bye thing. There's 15 teams in the ACC today; just do four rounds and give the only bye to the #1 seed.
This would be 13 games, which, by my count, is the same amount of games that is played in the double buy system in place today. My guess is that the ACC wants to protect the top seeded teams and avoid upsets right before the big dance.
It's pretty hard to do eight televised games in one day on one basketball court.
Two games at the same time on the same court. It's called March Madness for a reason.
you joke, but C-USA did this last year with a curtain in between the two courts.
Was it 3 on 3 in a half court? Make it/Take it?
Gotta win by 2 baskets - shirts and skins.
It would only be 7 games but I understand your point. A 10am tipoff is probably not great for ratings.
The most realistic option would be to add an extra day and have the 2, 3, 4 and 5 seeds play on the first day giving them the opportunity for a day of rest with a win.
Tuesday- 4 games (2-5 & 12-15 seeds)
Wednesday - 3 games (6 - 11 seeds)
Thursday - 4 games
Friday - 2 games
Saturday - championship
That would mean spending more money on accommodations, both by fans and by teams. The winners of the Day 1 games would be sitting around for an extra day before their second game.
All things considered, I feel like the current format is the best overall compromise between fairness and efficiency.
Growing up in North Carolina, this would be the best school day of the year if games started at 10am. ACC tourney week was always the least productive week at school in March during middle school and high school
Beat FSU and we clinch the 4 seed, right?
Louisville still needs to lose 1
Last night's win would allow us to win a VT-FSU-Louisville tiebreaker due to having a win over the highest ranked team. So we get the double bye with:
a win over FSU
ANDa win over Miami OR 1 loss by Louisville OR FSU wins over NCSU & WakeEDIT: Looks like BC did us a favor tonight and made this easier - beat FSU and we are guaranteed the double-bye
I think VT and FSU control our own destiny. Both have only 5 losses. UofL has 6 losses. We beat FSU and Miami, we are a 4 no matter what anyone else does.
If Tech beats FSU and Miami, the 3 seed is still in play as well. Would need some weird results though.
Duke needs to lose 2 of 3 to Miami, Wake, and @UNC, while we win out.
For that matter, the 2 seed is still in play mathematically, if UVA loses out, Duke goes 1-2 down the stretch, and we win out.
I'd rather Duke win out and improve our resume for the dance that actually matters, and take our chances with the ACC tourney. Don't mine me, though... I don't care about winning the ACC at all.
Tech's resume is probably as best as it is going to get. Best possible thing for Tech is to get the 4 seed in the Acc beat the 5 seed hopefully Gets Uva in the semi finals and beat them. Or of course win the Acc tournament and probably get a 2 seed in the Ncaa tournament
If the Hokies can get the double bye, I see them winning that first game and then having as good a shot as any in the semis.
If we can earn that #4 seed and nab a couple wins in the ACCT, I don't think a 3 Seed is out of the question for the Big Dance
Where's that link that shows all the game possibilities and how teams would end in the standings?
It would be best to have that in the body of the post
We are currently ranked fourth in the ACC.
The only ways to keep our fourth ranking and the double buy are:
win at Florida State which would earn Virginia Tech the double bye even if we lose to Miami and Florida State wins their other two games.
Or
Hope that Florida State loses to both NC State and wake forest ( not going to happen) and we beat Miami
We will fall no lower than the five seed as long as: Virginia tech beats Miami and Louisville loses at least one of its last three games. (Louisville's last game is at Virginia)
Let me know if I missed anything.
Louisvlle is still a factor because they own the tiebreaker. Here are the scenarios for getting the double-bye with the games next week2-0 = Double-bye
1-1 (FSU Win) = Double-bye
1-1 (Miami Win) =
Double-bye IF FSU loses to NCSU & WakeNAW0-2 =
Double-bye IF there is a tiebreaker between VT/NCSU/FSU/Cuse OR VT/FSU/NCSU at 11-7NAWEDIT: Updated after the Louisville loss to BC tonight.
Edit 2: FSU beat NCSU
TLDR:
if FSU beats NCSU on Saturday then we must beat them next week for the double-byebeat FSUI had no idea Alexander-Walker was seeded so low.
Here's the bracket scenario thingie where you can play with outcomes of all the games. Bottom line: Beat FSU.
ACC Bracket Scenarios
Technically Tech can still get the 2 in the Acc. Actually They can still get the 1# seed
I tried this yesterday afternoon and figured out the scenario where it could happen. Tried it this morning and couldn't remember nor figure it out again and thought it became impossible with UNC also winning last night.
Yeah. UNC had to lose to Syracuse last night for us to be able to pass them.
Awww man😢😢😢
With Louisville's loss to Boston College tonight, VT can clinch the double bye with a win against Florida State.
Also with the Louisville loss is looks like we are almost guaranteed the 4 or 5 seed. Both put us with an FSU rematch in the quarterfinals, just hopefully with a healthy jrob and maybe even that double bye for some extra rest.
It appears that the second game against FSU (the one in the tournament) is the more important one. Would we be better off with JRob having three games to prepare for that one (against FSU, against Miami, and against 12/13 seed winner) vs just two? I'm almost thinking that having three games for JRob to get up to speed is a better situation here.
Edit: Dammit, okay hokie07ME, I'll drink.
so here's my question. Say FSU beats NCSU this saturday and we come into the game absolutely having to win to clinch the 4 seed. Also say that JRob is marginally good to play. Do we risk losing to FSU for the sake of getting an extra game to knock the rust off of 5? Or do we stick with the formula we have, give Robinson another few days to rest and bring him back for the Miami game?
Or say FSU loses to NCSU. Technically we can still get the double bye with a loss to FSU if they inconceivably lose to Wake. Does that change the calculus?
Last one: does any of this matter? Is FSU such a bad match up for us that we lose with Bede or with a rusty JRob so it's a moot point?
To me it's easy. When JRob is 100% let him play. If he isn't, don't.
Since it looks like we are going to be a 4 or 5 and replay FSU in the tourney anyway, I think it should really be about his status more than seeding in the ACCT. Would love to win some games there but the NCAAT is what really matters and I wouldn't put that at risk.
Is literally any player 100% in March? I know this isn't football, but it's a long season.
So we lose next week, win Day 2 ACC game to force a rematch on Day 3...or win next week, get a Day 3 rematch with no Day 2 win (double bye).
Assuming we lose FSU rematch: So is it better to split with FSU and have no tourney wins, or get swept with a win over 12/13?
(Worst case: lose next week, also lose to 12/13)
Much better to split. If I understand correctly, you're proposing that we trade a road win over a ranked team for an ACC tourney win over a lesser team and an extra loss.
Yes, that was my "proposal". A tourney win and 2 FSU losses or 0 tourney wins and a win @ #14 FSU.
Given those 2 options, gotta go with plan
AB. PlanBA is just awful. Now, I'd like to propose plan C, where we end up 27-6 and earn a 2-seed to the Big Dance.
Agreed. A win in the ACC tourney against a nobody would be pretty much worthless to our resume.
Subscribe.
Don't have to play him the whole time. Start with what's (been) working, test the waters, then give him some minutes. Doesn't need that many, we've got Miami after another 3 days rest.
It's impossible to argue what Buzz has done here, his philosophy, etc. His record speaks for itself. But if there is one kryptonite to the 3-4 guard/wing heavy team approach Buzz favors- it's FSU. Big, long, athletic team that can guard the post and hit open shots. It's a very very tough matchup for us. FSU is just as scrappy and tough as we are, but they are much bigger. Hamilton is also a good coach- he's not going to blow the game on coaching. Buzz's teams aren't built on size, and it shows in this series in particular.
small and fast players can make the big slow guys get fouls with reach ins as they blow by. But it has to be jrob running the show. I am getting awfully tired of NAW going to the rim, getting stuffed, and not drawing the foul.
Big teams have trouble guarding small teams and vice versa so I think it'll be a shootout. Biggest thing for me is keeping them off the free throw line and keeping Blackshear out of foul trouble. They excel at getting to the line which could prove problematic for us
If J'Rob can play, let him play.
He won't be in game shape, so his minutes will be limited. Also, he has a great stroke from outside. So, he doesn't have to run point the entire time or at all to make a difference. That added offense could help elevate the abysmal 3pt shooting we've seen over the last 8 games.
Wondering why we're talking about if it would be better to get Robinson back for 3 more games vs 4 more games before the tournament when it's abundantly clear that we're going to have 5 more games.
A new tweet on @Hokie_Hoops shows J Rob standing on a bench WITHOUT a walking boot filming Buzz dancing! https://twitter.com/Hokie_Hoops/status/1101513188695257088
Correct. He was without the boot for the entirety of the Duke game.
I didn't see that, all I saw was Zion.
Really. I was so busy squinting at half of my TV screen trying to follow the game without benefit of the announcers that I didn't even notice.
Well I guess this just leaves one thing for us to do on Tuesday
FSU beat NCSU. So that's that. Win and get 4th seed. Lose and we get 5th
The good news is NC State gave them a game so they didn't just cruise and rest a bunch of guys. They also didn't look particularly impressive. So the only thing to do is go out and win next week.
Not directly related to this thread, but is anyone seeing Purdue just murder Ohio St right now.
That win keeps looking better and better
What is this? Football season?
We beat them right....
Ohio State suspended their top scorer and rebound guy right before this game so not suprised they look terrible.
I keep arguing this with the Big Ten folks around but I live in State College PA and we can't escape that thing.
Yeah, but that PSU game was one of the few games this year when I could have gleefully driven over those refs with the truck.
I would like to see JRob get about 10 minutes against FSU and 20 minutes against Miami. After that it's full go for the Tourneys
Here is a website that I like to use to look at our chances for different ACC seeding throughout the season.
Sooo....about that website....
If you're looking for the link, click on the first word of that post.
Looks like the 4/5 seed will be playing the 2:00 games on Wed/Thurs and 7:00 on Friday night.
Clear your work calendars appropriately.
