Editing this post to comply with CGs and allow for a more constructive discussion. Are we considered a big underdog to Duke tonight? Without Williamson, I feel we have a punchers chance. In my opinion, David v Goliath does not apply tonight given the circumstances. What are your thoughts? (Leaving the article I originally posted for insight)

While I enjoy the odd look into other fanbases' biased points of view this is pretty close to a CG violation.
Hmm, I can definitely see I am straying into that territory. Apologies everyone, this is why I usually stay away from posting threads. Wasn't my intent at all. Joe, sorry to waste your time on this one.
Well, I mean, they're not wrong.
David won. Saying "we're not David" isn't great if you're going to use that metaphor.
Unless our social media team is saying Duke isn't Goliath, in which case they're still wrong cause uh.... they've got some serious NBA talent on that team.
Decent drag on the social media squad. Unless they are trying to say we are the same caliber as Duke. But come social media team, do good.
Well the way I took it was our social media team was trying to say that they didn't want the team to be labeled as David, since that would imply a monumental upset like UMBC over UVA if we were to win. The intent was to say that Duke is going to have to work to get the W, so the David vs Goliath moniker doesn't even apply
That makes the most sense but, in my opinion, it shouldn't be the first reaction of fans to say "wait hold on didn't David win?"
Feels like the message could've been more clear.
Yeah I think there is enough of a sample here already showing the message is being misconstrued. I think most of us Hokies immediately get it, but to those without the O&M shades we're huge underdogs by default.
I thought the article was pretty funny. The #getBetter hashtag at the end made me chuckle. The real hardship I'm having is trying to weigh winning against Duke and in turn improving UVA's chances at a ACC regular season title, versus losing to a Puke team that historically I can't stand? Hmm choices...
UVA is fortunate there are only 15 teams in the ACC, meaning at worst they'll lose to the 9-seed in the second round.
Which highlights how epic that loluva bed shitting was. Damn near a year later, every time a loluva basketball fan tries to throw shade on someone else, there's that adorable Chesapeake Bay Retriever telling them to #stfu.
And fans of every other team in the country chuckling quietly to themselves and making a mental note about how douchey the fighting zimas are.
I don't think STL got the message from the VT media guys.
The overall message is that we intend to not be the little guy.
Those were my thoughts exactly
But how are we not the little guys if Buzz doesn't recruit big men...
I saw this yesterday and personally, I was confused. See what our intent was, but it wasn't a great use of that metaphor.
That stupid nonsense is up there with Drive for 25 emails the morning after GT whipped our ass in Lane by 21 without passing the ball. Get a freaking clue. Aren't these "marketing" people? LOL
as a marketing person, I can say...

What are you talking about? They threw a pass. /s
Hey now, they passed once in that game.
*reads title too quickly and sees "Is VT David Duke"*

Also took a double take
UVA can suck it .
Oh, did VT Athletics communications make a fool of themselves again? I'm shocked.
#FirePete
Nowadays I'm just thankful they haven't reached FSU Twitter levels of cringe yet.
Well now I'd like some examples.
Until we become a big dog, we're always going to be David.
#getBetter... I mean we did, didn't we? Stayed within 6 at home without J-Rob. That had to have caused concern for UVA given how badly they beat us WITH J-Rob.
Typical LOLUVA behavior.
Can this team perform better than it did at ND? Probably. Hopefully. I think they are going to have to to beat Duke.
I think the entire team is getting a little better every game even if they don't put it all together every game.
Go Hokies!
Maybe we should have gone with 'We aren't here to be the UMBC to their UVA', because we will literally never be irrelevant enough to be a 16 seed.
You must have missed the JJ era.
JJ would have loved to have been a 16 seed.
JJ would have loved any post season action.
I'm impressed they were able to type up that article, you know, on their Blackberries because they're such successful business people.
For as smart as UVA claims to be, their people are incredibly stupid...
Anyone with half a brain can understand the metaphor the article is about, they just choose not to see it to write a trash piece about us.
They have their own issues to worry about. I don't care if they have a #2 next to their name, they're shaping up for another early Tourney exit this year with how they've been playing.
Never forget #HardThingsTogether
The answer is Yes Fam, ty outlaw three was a round stone to the forehead
Your metaphor is perfect
I dunno about all that, all I know is Duke has lost three straight in the Cassell fam
This aged well
Have a leg FAM
Looks like the answer is strictly yes
So me personally, I still do not believe we should be labeled as David. We handled our business last night and while euphoric, wasn't all that shocking. Definitely an upset, but not a David over Goliath scenario. However, the community has spoken!
Unfortunately our fans rushed the floor like we were an unranked team that pulled off a shocking upset. So while most of us want to think that this game should not have been considered a David vs Goliath matchup, our fans proved that it was.
Don't bash the students for doing that. It was a big win over the #3 team. Let them celebrate.
They should celebrate every win, but when we win over Maryland Eastern Shore they don't rush the court. Why? Because we know MD E Sh doesn't belong on the same court as Tech. When we beat a team ranked about the same, they don't rush the floor, because there is a feeling that the opposing team is an equal. When the fans rush the floor its a sign that there was no expectation of victory and we beat a team that we didn't have any place beating, so it fits the David v Goliath metaphor. The fans could have all celebrated in the stands and on Main street like they should every win. We are #20 in the country, we should be able to give Duke hell on our home court and shouldn't act like we pulled off a monumental task in winning this one.
Meh, I think you're reading too much into it. Duke was ranked #3 in the country. No matter, that's a big win. Let the kids have their moment. And to be fair, we were missing our engine and floor captain for the game, which makes it even a little more special.
Heck, MSU rushed the floor when they beat Michigan, and that was 7v10...
Rushing the floor in basketball is different than storming the field in football. Last night wouldn't be football field worthy, but the court, meh. Let em have it.
That is a great point. In that case argument conceded
I told my wife with 5 minutes left: "I hope they don't storm the court"
I was kinda impressed that it was a slow and confused court storm... you could tell Reece Davis was expecting it and was shocked when it wasn't happening as quickly as he thought it would.
Small court storm = students expect our team to win just about any game now = doesn't make us look inferior.
Hey loluva. And Hey Duke!
