WBB vs Wake Forest First Round ACC

Edited to change the title. I think the comments about last weeks game are still good for this one.

Hokies vs Wake Forest at 3:30 Wednesday Mar 6 in Greensboro. GAme is on Raycom.

Winner plays Clemson at 6PM Thursday. Also on Raycom.

The Lady Hokies play Wake Forest at Cassell at 2 PM Sunday Mar 3. Last regular season game. The game is on ACCNE.

The ACC Tournament starts Wed with the same strange seeding system as the men. The Hokies are currently tied for 10th with UVA and Duke and I think they hold the tie breaker over both. Beat Wake and we get the 10 seed, which means we play Wake again on Wednesday. Lose to Wake and we could still get the 10 seed. UVA will probably lose to Notre Dame and Duke should lose to UNC; but Duke and UNC is a rivalry game and UNC is not that much better than Duke. If we end up as the 11 seed we would play Pitt. The 10 seed plays at 3:30 on Wednesday; the 11 seed plays at 6:30. Both games will be on RSN. The 10 seed would probably play Clemson or UNC at 6PM Thursday. The 11 seed would probably play FSU at 8PM Thursday.

Wake Forest Roster

Two players on that Roster will not play. McKenna Frank was an early season walk on, who is no longer listed on the roster. And Elisa Penna, possibly their best player and only senior, is out for the season with an injury.

Wake Forest Season Stats

I could not find Conference only stats for Wake.

Wake is a young team and has struggled mightily in the ACC this year. Their only win was against LOLUVA at Charlottesville 52-42 on Jan 27. LOLUVA shot 26% from the field and 15% from 3 and only 9-16 on FTs. Wake only makes 4 3pt shots per game shooting 30%. And they average 39% shooting overall. Their top 2 scorers average 12.7 and 11.9 points per game and that includes the early season out of conference games. Wake is the only school I could not find ACC stats for; but I would guess they aren't doing that well in conference.

This should not be a tough game for the Hokies if they can maintain their concentration. Should be a good game for the seniors last game at Cassell.

I hope we win. But turnovers and poor shot selection has hurt VT. Sometimes I see . K. Brooks over his head in coaching at the ACC & P5 level.

Duke up by 20 on UNC with 5 minutes left in the 3rd quarter.

Doesn't matter if it's cake or pie as long as it's chocolate.

Wake up 32-31 at the half. Hokies shooting 20% from three. Looks like they are in control, but the shots are not falling. Duke won; so we need to win to get the 10 seed. Magarity 10 points and 9 rebounds in the first half.

I think the line up is Wake at 3:30 on Wednesday. If we win, Clemson at 6:00 on Thursday. If we win, Louisville at 6 on Friday. If we win, 11 seed Duke, 6 seed FSU or 3 seed NC State or Miami at 2:30 on Sat. I guess 14 seed BC is also possible.

They need to win at least 3 games to make the ncaa tournerment

The taste is so divine
A chemical come alive
Welcome to your vice
Good luck with life
'Cause you can't
You can't
You can't kill me that easily

And NC State is the 3 seed.

I think Wake should be a win. Clemson is realistic chance. They will have to play lights out to beat Louisville.

just realizing that the Lady Hokies are only playing 16 conference games raises my ire of the men playing twenty next year that much more. Pretty obvious its a money grab especially so the ACC Network debut has all the material it needs to be constant.

Curious as to why you see that as a bad thing? I like the fact that we will get ACC games around Xmas time and 2 better opponents earlier in the season

While you might enjoy it as a fan to see better opponents, its not better necessarily for the team, especially with the toll the 18 game schedule already takes on ACC teams. Moving to a 20 game schedule will now take that much more of a toll on the team physically and mentally when most of the other conferences are not doing the same. This also complicates normal standards for evaluating conference performance. Now you are going to have to win 12 games in season to likely be guaranteed a tournament slot, while those teams from the other conferences will still be held to the 10 or so wins as a threshold. Another factor that pains me is what happens to Tech post Buzz, for as much as I would love for him to stay at Tech forever, I just don't see that being the case. All of those combined but my bigger fear is having teams that are worn out by the time the real tournament play comes around.

one way I would be more in favor of the 20 games is if they reduced the ACC tourney to the top 8 teams and got rid of byes. That would reduce gameload prior to the tournament but they wont do it because it would cut half the conference fans out of conference tourney making it harder to fake filling arenas for that

Maybe they could go to a regular 16 team format with only the 1 seed getting a bye. As I was typing this I thought: "Are you crazy? You think the ACC is going to give up the revenue from those extra games just to avoid overworking the players and coaches just before the NCAA?"

Silly me. Never mind.

Yeah I know its a lost cause. Unfortunately, its still about the money and then about more money and more money. I guess I might be ok on this if they decided to start the season in mid October so then there was more space between games.

This is a very winnable bracket for the Hokies up until the championship.

Never Forget #1 Overall Seed UVA 54, #64 UMBC 74

Updated with some info about the Tournament. Hokies should win this one and move on to Clemson tomorrow.

That is the start you want, up 27-10 at end of the 1st.

Margarita 5 rebound 9 points. Emery 13 points.

55-30 At the half . Magarity already has a double double.

Up by 25 at the half.

Now to my NC centric ACC rant. The woman tournament is low attendance anyway why is it being held in Greensboro? Move that thing around.

Wet stuff on the red stuff.

Total cost for the 15 teams to travel is probably just about at a minimum with the tournament in Greensboro. Doesn't make sense to move it unless you're going to increase revenue in a different venue.

I would love to see Margarity get a bunch of assists in the second half and get a triple double.

85-63 final score. Not sure where this team is going to find rebounds next year with Magarity graduating. I know they have height coming in with the freshman class but they are going to need to contribute immediately or next season could be ugly. Baptiste should be back so that will help but losing a regular 15-18 boards a night is going to be a major adjustment. The graduating class will take close to 50% of this years scoring and rebounds with it and about 75% of the blocks.
