Robinson Out Against Florida State

Justin Robinson won't make his return against the Seminoles. That's according to Buzz Williams on the ACC basketball coaches teleconference.

Bummer.

Hopefully this is more to get him some extra rest with the knowledge we are probably playing FSU in the ACC tourney one way or the other.

I suppose the good news is that it's a close enough to him being back that they have to announce it one way or the other.

I thought he said 5 wasn't going to play?

For some reason I just have this nagging feeling that Robinson might have already played his last game in maroon and orange. Maybe they're saving him for the tournament run, but man, you'd think we'd have some kind of time frame around a possible return. The fact that we seem to be going out of our way to avoid talking about it just seems....

I hope I'm wrong

Keep in mind we never heard anything about PJ Horne before his return. I know Robinson's a more important player than him, but I wouldn't assume the worst quite yet.

I think this is now Buzz's norm with dealing with multi-game injuries. He doesn't wan to give up any competitive advantage. IMHO, 5 could have a high ankle sprain or a fractured ankle, Buzz would be acting the same way.

Good thing he doesn't have a off season scrimmage to worry about broadcasting.

Both Fuente and Williams are fairly tight lipped about their program but personable in an individual setting.

Agreed. It's better for Buzz to keep opponents guessing.

In Blackshear's postgame Skype interview with Andy Katz after the Duke game, KJ said "when 5 comes back" at some point so the players seem to expect him back at some point

The only people that need to know if/when 5 is coming back are the coaches and his teammates.

I really hoped I was wrong. Unfortunately, it looks like this is likely at this point.

For a much more positive note on the day, the Hokies vaulted up to #15 in this week's AP Poll after beating Duke. FSU is #14, so tomorrow could have big implications on our final ranking with a win (and shouldn't hurt us much with a loss).

The jump in ranking is nice, but I thought a bit shy of what beating the high and might Duke should have yielded... 10 or 11 seems more appropriate since both teams were missing key players, not just Duke.

VT is a top 15 pick wout 5, a top 10 w him. His impact is measurable. I think him and Blackshear together are dynamite. I hope he's back for tourney play.

Pain is Temporary, Chicks Dig Scars
Glory is Forever, Let's Go Hokies!!

If you would have told me heading into our last 2 games we'd still be ranked in the top 15 with a chance at a 4 seed in both tourneys without him, I would have called you crazy. It would be nice to have him back for senior night and let him get the recognition he deserves, but I wouldn't be surprised if they're saving him for the NCAA tourney. If we get a double bye... maybe the ACC.

Gobble Till You Wobble

I mentioned this on twitter but should also mention it here. It's a little confusing to me that Buzz has changed up his strategy in regards to injury announcements.

Horne was "out indefinitely" until he all of a sudden wasn't. Teams had to prepare for him returning at any point without knowing either way.

Even more so with Robinson. But now, FSU has plenty of time to plan for the game
tomorrow knowing that 5 won't be playing.

Just odd, in my opinion. Why tip your hand for such a crucial game?

maybe its reverse psychology and robinson IS going to play.

Dreams do come true

My thoughts exactly. Makes no sense to me.

"What kind of person would throw away a perfectly good dog?"

There might be some behind the scenes stuff that we don't know about...who knows, maybe a coach complained to Swofford and now Swofford is forcing Buzz's hand.

Screw them. Nobody is telling us when Nolley is eligible, so I think we have every right to keep the rest of the NCAA world in the dark related to the injury status of our players.

"That man was violating a city ordinance, and I was just doing my duty to enforce it." - Mike Curtis

eh? Nolley will be eligible after spring semester. I thought this was cleared up a while ago. Pretty sure I read somewhere (here?) that he was declared a partial qualifier by the NCAA, which means he has 4 years to play 3 once he completes his freshman year and with a GPA that meets the NCAA ongoing eligibility threshold.

Yeah, I am pretty sure the public not knowing (i.e. he is not playing) means he did not score appropriately. It's an academic issue, so it cannot legally be public.

They might not know themselves when exactly he returns. Same reason Coach K has been giving day before updates on Zion but no definitive date of return. No point in giving Robinson a 6 week timeframe if it might not even be exactly that. He'll return when once he's ready, whether that's this Friday or in 2 weeks

I get what your saying, but I think if Robinson even did play, it wouldn't be much and not nearly enough to alter FSU's gameplan.

In Sam Rogers we trust.

Could be that, win or lose, they anticipate playing FSU again very soon in the ACC tourney. They might've wanted to make sure FSU didn't spend this "extra" time prepping for 5 so they can get full advantage of his return in the tourney.

If that's true then everyone else is playing checkers while Buzz is playing chess.

Yeah, if FSU plays the same way with the same game plan on a neutral court and we have Five back - we win by 10+.

is anyone else going to the game? I realize its a Tuesday night and pretty hefty drive for most hokie fans. But tickets are DIRT cheap. I got lower level about 20 rows on stub hub for 20 bucks (+ the outrageous fees they charge) its only a 2 hour drive for me and itll be the only time I get to see hokie hoops besides wayyyyyy back when I got to see the central Connecticut state game after the marshall football game. so im pretty excited!

I debated it the three-hour drive with having not been to a game this year but with upcoming road trips and taxes to finish, I'll watch from the couch.

You will see this game, this upset and this sign next on ESPN Sportscenter. Virginia Tech 31 Miami 7

His decision was made after a phone call with longtime Virginia Tech assistant coach Bud Foster. All Foster told him was, "We win. They don't."

yeah I went back and forth on whether I should go or not but when I saw how cheap the tickets were I couldn't pass it up. I don't get to see much hokie hoops live. ive seen us play in tally 3x and it has never been a good out come for us. Im hoping we at least play competitive tonight there length scares me although duke has great length too we got lucky and got them at home.

Question: does Robinson's being out hurt his draft prospects? Was/is he projected as a 1st rounder??

Always has been an unlikely draft pick. Maybe somebody will shock me and take him late, but I'd be surprised if he was taken. Likely Euro player.

the nba draft is only 60 rounds. remove the 5 dukies, 5 tarheels, 5 wildcats, and 15 international players that leaves you with about 30 picks left and I don't think JRob makes the cut. Hes great for VT and could get on a NBA team I think but much like Delaney itd be an uphill battle for him. Hed have to have a great combine and summer league to make a roster. More likely for him is he would be a GREAT EURO player.

nba draft is only 60 rounds

Could you imagine if the NBA was like baseball were towards the last 20 rounds teams just started drafting random people just because they were athletic?

If you can't handle my shit posts, you don't deserve my memes

lol mybad 60 picks

if JRob couldn't make it in 60 rounds we need to re-evaluate our recruiting strategies

Pick up a Tall Man costume and see if you can get drafted.

As someone who had to painstakingly go through all (roughly 1,300) MLB draft picks one summer to get as much background info as possible, 60 rounds sounds like a nightmare. Only good thing about that was a kid that got drafted had the greatest name ever...

Not surprising... From my perspective the team is starting to find their groove to playing without 5, and this is a HUGE game with major implications (when in the heck were we ever fighting for a double-bye in the ACC tourney????). Why mess with the team composition now? If JR is 100% then let him get his reps in against Miami when there is much less risk to our ACC seeding outcome.

Come on back JRobb. Unleash the full power of this team.

The Dude Abides

I have a strong feeling he will be back for the Miami game.

Wagon's full and Momma I'm coming home.

I think Buzz is just saving him for the tourneys.

dumb question here - what can a guy do in his situation to hold on to some semblance of physical endurance? I imagine with a foot/ankle injury you still can't even do the bike, obviously running is out and i would assume swimming as well. i'm hoping someone with some PT experience can give me hope that 5 wouldn't be totally out of shape when he comes back because we really don't have time to ease him back in.

I would imagine at this point in the injury, he is probably able to run, bike, swim...I would think it is the in-game movements that are taking longer for there to be not as much pain, or risk of reinjury (jumping, cutting, etc.)

#sauce ... sounds logical to me

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

It depends on the "stage" of healing he's in. At first, you're not going to be as worried about his overall fitness as you are aiding the body in the healing process and keeping his pain down. I'm sure he was still doing upper body workouts that didn't break his weight bearing status or put too much strain on his foot/ankle. Swimming is a great option since it requires no weight bearing and research has shown that submersion in water has great healing properties.

That being said, he won't be in the same shape he was prior to injury. Obviously he'll have rust but i can guarantee he had a great rehab plan that made sure he kept as much of his fitness as safely possible.

"GO BACK TO YOUR ROOM LITTLE BROTHER, THE CUP IS COMIN’ ON HOME!”

With horses, underwater treadmill rehab can result in too much strength in relation to the durability of the skeletal structure. You can get to the point where the bone structure is not strong enough for the physical load that a fit horse can generate.

He'll have some rust initially, but he also should be fresh, without some of the nagging bumps and bruises players typically have this time of the season. If we can just ease him in a few games prior to the NCAA tourney, then by tourney time he might be 100% w/o the rust. I just worry about the team getting used to playing without him, and then all of a sudden having him, because when he's out there, the offense tends to go through him. Right now, our offense is primarily going through KJ, and sometimes through NAW. Hopefully, it will end up being a positive in the sense that we'll have the versatility to run our offense through a multitude of players (5, KJ, NAW), so when an opponent wants to take one of our players out of the game, we can easily adjust.

Even if he is healthy, at this point I would just have him rest up for the tourney

Buzz's psychology of injuries is weird, but my immediate thought was 'oh, good, we're talking about him coming back at some point, so this has to be good.' And I'm sticking with that.

Old sigline: I've been cutting back on the drinking.

New Sigline: lol it's football season.

Only way to get in game shape is to play. He's been out way too long to have not lost some endurance and picked up rust. If he's healthy, he'd be playing.

At the same time, if he's borderline for FSU he should wait for senior night to come back. I'm just hoping he was almost ready to play.

Can't forget that he's not just been sitting there on the sidelines cheering. He's been studying the game as we've had to reinvent it without him. I think he's a smart guy and will see where he can fit in coming back to take advantage of KJ's increased involvement, and help get NAW, Hill and Outlaw back in top gear offensively. He doesn't need to be trying to score 30 right away, just provide some quality minutes as he returns to form. Also, he would have been practicing if he's going to play, right? I'm excited to see him again as soon as he's cleared.

Reel men fish on Wednesdays

He should probably shake off the rust by playing a few pickup games at McComas. What could go wrong?
