Round 2: 2700 miles to play Liberty
Buzzketball came out high energy on both ends of the floor and held St Louis to the lowest half of scoring in any modern NCAA tournament game. A quick 22 point lead at halftime though dwindled in the second half as the Billikens pushed back to get within ten. That was as close as the Hokies allowed the game to get. Now they get a second helping of Liberty on the season, after playing the Flames in the preseason scrimmage back in early November. The Hokies won that scrimmage 86-70 with some hot perimeter shooting, five Hokies reaching double figures, including 16 from freshman Isaiah Wilkins. Liberty reached the second round by upsetting Mississippi State.
This is the 18th time the Hokies and Flames will meet on the floor. The Hokies are 14-3 in the previous contests. The Flames are 29-6 and won the Sun Conference in their first year. The Flames are coached by Ritchie McKay, who took over the program in 2016. Prior to Liberty, McKay was the Associate Head Coach at UVA under Tony Bennett for six seasons. Before that he was a head coach at Liberty, New Mexico, Oregon State, Colorado State, Portland State. He is 288-240 as a head coach, while 123-82 between two stints at Liberty.
Defensively, the Flames employ the pack-line defense that Coach Ritchie McKay took from his six years under Tony Bennett. Think UVA version .75, as they employ the principles nearly as effectively as UVA. So far this season, Liberty allows the 8th fewest points per game at 61.2 PPG. Opponents only manage to shoot 32% from the perimeter. The one major difference in how McKay employs the pack-line is that he does utilize some man to man tendencies more than UVA does.
Offensively, McKay's system is mainly an inside-out offense that uses the bigs receiving the ball and then passing to open shooters on the perimater. It requires a big man that has good floor vision and excellent passing touch, while also being a threat to turn and take the ball to the basket. The Flames are able to run a multitude of set plays from this look. Ideally they look to create an overload on defense to identify an open shooter.
Flames Backcourt
Junior Caleb Homesley, #1, 6'6, 205 lbs is the Flames second leading scorer, playing more the role of small forward than guard. He is averaging 12.5 PPG, 5.5 RPG, 2.7 APG and 1 SPG. He shoots 59% inside, 32% from outside, and 71% from the line.
Senior Lovell Cabbil, #3, 6'3, 170 lbs, at scoring 11.7 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 2.8 APG and 1 SPG. He is shooting 52% inside so far, primarily because he uses his big body to get to the rim. He also hits 46% from the perimeter so this is the one Flame the Hokies really need to extinguish to control this game. He also makes 86% from the line.
Sophomore Elijah Cuffee, #10, 6'4, 185 lbs is putting up 7.7 PPG, 2 RPG, 1.9 APG, and1.4 SPG so far. A bit of do everything, especially defensively which is critical in Ritchie McKay's defensive scheme. Cuffee shoots 50% inside, 42% outside, and 87% from the line.
Freshman Darius McGhee, #2, 5'9, 160 lbs rounds out the main rotation of guards while putting up 7.5 PPG, 2.7 RPG, 1.1 APG and 1 SPG. He shoots 57% inside, 31% outside and 91% from the line.
Junior Georgie Pacheco-Ortiz, #11, 6'1, 170 Lbs is the sixth man. He averages 7.1 PPG, 1.6 RPG, and 2.3 APG spelling the primary ball handlers in Homesley and Cabbil. He shoots 46% inside, 48% outside and 88% from the line.
Flames Frontcourt
Junior Scottie James, #31, 6'8, 235 lbs is the Flames leading scorer and a major contributor on second chance opportunities, averaging over 4 offensive rebounds per game. He is putting up 12.9 PPG, 8.7 RPG, 1.1 APG, 1.5 SPG and 1.5 BPG.
When James is unable to go, or the Flames are struggling against a team with size, then they utilize two additional forwards.
Senior Forward Keenan Gumbs, #5, 6'5, 230 lbs will spell James down low. He is averaging 5.9 PPG, 2.2 RPG, 1.1 APG, 1 SPG and 1 BPG.
Junior Myo Baxter-Bell, #0, 6'5, 255 Lbs is also utilized in this role. He averages 5.1 PPG, 2.5 RPG, and 1.4 APG.
What to expect from Liberty?
The Flames play the pack-line defense with man to man tendencies, utilizing larger guards and a single forward to shut down the lane. Cabbil and Homesley typically clear the perimeter shots. Shortening the shot clock and forcing opponents into turnovers and challenged shots is the ultimate goal. The forced Mississippi state to miss 10 of their last 11 shots in the first round game.
This team is the polar opposite of the Hokies first round opponent from the free throw line. While St Louis was second to last, the Flames are 12th in the country in Free Throw Percentage. This likely doesn't play a major role, as the Flames only go to the line an average of 15 times per game but if the Hokies find themselves behind late, having to foul this could be a determining factor.
The Flames do not get into foul trouble, with only one starter averaging over 2 fouls per contest this season. They also do not rely on starters for heavy minutes, with 29.9 MPG the highest of any player and seven players playing more than 20 MPG.
The Flames average over 24 attempts beyond the perimeter, shooting 37% on the season, so the Hokies need to ensure they close out or face giving up quick baskets that will keep the Flames in the game.
The Hokies
In the rebounding game, the Hokies need to be ready to score transition baskets on defensive rebounds, as Liberty focuses hard on preventing transition and getting set in their half court. If the Hokies can get out ahead of the Flames than they will find a much easier time scoring rather than allowing Liberty to get into their half-court game.
The pace of play could vary greatly in this contest, so the Hokies need to be steadfast in finding their way to the basket or finding open shooters. If they are able to consistently get good looks than much like the last contest, they should build an early lead and be able to repel surges in the second half.
Blackshear, Blackshear, Blackshear, Blackshear.....get him the ball. The more possessions that he touches the ball the more likely the Hokies are to win.
The Hokies need to not let the opponent get in their head. Play this game as if Duke was across the aisle rather than an opponent they should beat and will cause major embarrassment back home if they don't.
In Closing
How did Justin Robinson handle the first game and the tweaks to his leg that showed him shaking them off? How much is he able to contribute in this game. There is a noticeable difference in the passing with him on the court rather than off it.
Get out and move. Aggressive defense throughout, not just the first half. Find and make the open shots as they should be in short supply on both sides of this game.
The Hokies have better size in the starting five but both teams primarily employ four guards and one big. The key to this game will be controlling the defensive rebounding and not playing into turnovers. Once in the half-court, crisp passing and lane penetration are key to success.
Hokies win with a big game from Outlaw and normal contributions from Nickiel Alexander-Walker and Kerry Blackshear. Defensively Isaiah Wilkins will create a couple momentum plays that help separate this team.
Hokies 75-63.

Let's GOOO!!!
HOKIESSS
LET'S GO!!!!
Let's put out them flames
Pregame Dance Ritual: Alright. [crosses fingers] Please don't lose, please don't choke, please don't screw up, PLEASE don't fuck up (unless you're fucking up the other team, that is)! [Opens eyes again. Exhales]. Ok. RUN THESE HALF-LIVES OFF THE COURT & OUT THE DAMN GYM!!!
Let's Go Hokies!
Liberty's backup center is built like Jared Lorenzen.
That dude looked like Suge Night.
Weve gotten some clean looks but they're not falling yet
Then we gotta stick to what works.
Momma, there goes dat man (KBJ) again
They can't stop KBJ. Feed him.
DAMN there's a lot of slop shit going on down there! Quit fuckin around!
What is up with our 3 PT shooting?
They can not handle Blackshear. Get the ball to him all day long
WTF with the FT!? You have to nail that shit in a game like this!
That freshman guard for LU is on fire right now. Need to stick Bede on him and shut him down.
We look like total shit right now.
I'm not worried about right now. I'll always be concerned about the 2nd half. But the BS execution on the floor absolutely WILL NOT win them the game. If I were Liberty, I wouldn't be too worried.
We aren't looking good so I shouldn't look ahead but that Duke win stung... I will not apologize for wanting as easy a path as possible and a Duke team wanting revenge and coming off a game that wakes them up will be tough to beat.
At this rate we may not have to worry about that...
This isn't ideal.
This team better get their heads out of their ass, because Liberty isn't gonna just go away
Does anyone genuinely believe Justin Robinson could run that monster over? Dude's built like a heavyweight wrestler or UFC fighter.
Oh he sold that call.
No chance, but still a foul. 5 lowered is shoulder directly into the center of his chest.
Ain't no way 5 knocks down #0 that easily, I'm sorry.
Not playing well.....
Zero ball rotation. Slow defensive rotation. No energy...
I'm calling it. IF Liberty has a 5+ pts lead going into the half, they WILL win this game. Calling it.
Evening out your downvote because I agree with you
I would love (& still hope) to be wrong, but until Blackshear just now FINALLY got one in, how long has the drought been going on?? I'm not being given a ton of reason to have much confidence.
If this kind of contact is allowed all game then it plays right into Liberty's plan to muck it up
#0 moving on that all day, thats a block
Our 3PTA is low again just like St. Louis. I know we want to feed Kerry but let's get our guys hot. Liberty has attempted 13 to our 5.
We haven't made but one and that was an odd shot by Bede.
I think we've missed more lay-ups than 3's
Don't have a good feeling about this. With the lack of upsets thus far in the tournament, a screwup here against Liberty will be talked about all week.
For us, it'll be MUCH longer.
We're shooting 28% and 20% from three. They are shooting 53% and 46% from three.
All of this and the game is still only 6 pts. We will be fine once we get in our rhythm offensively
We're looking like we have no energy or legs at all.
This performance is like a balloon of farts
Shooting 28%
Haha Blackshear with the push off the back on Bede's shot. Whatever works if they won't call it.
After being fouled the past few times in the paint with no whistle, he's gonna have to keep it up.
Outlaw is way off tonight. He's had 2 or 3 wide open looks and wasn't even close.
Maybe put Wilk in for some energy?
so Outlaw can shoot? The little that I have watched this year; I am not seeing it.
Leader in the nation in 3pt % most of the year
Well, we need that NOW. Heck, we needed it the entire 1st half. So where the fuck was it?
In his halftime interview Friday, Buzz said if we can't keep it ugly we'll lose. Well we're losing and this can't get any uglier.
Uglier helps Liberty.
They're nothing but scrappy.
They need to be consistent on charge versus block.
Not sure if consistency is an issue. They just need to call it right.
True, but that call wrong. It was a charge not a block.
Yes.
That is a horrible call. Charge all day long
It was close enough to not be egregious. In real time I can see how a ref might think he had his heel in the restricted zone
They have replay cameras.
They are not going to replay a charge in the first half.
Are we not doing officiating anymore?
Charges on one end
Blocks on the other
Sort of need some consistency.
Been pretty consistently calling the foul on VT
That's not what I meant, but it's how they're doing it.
And actually that's not true - we were in the bonus pretty quick (although then then the whistles stop blowing for us.)
Ugliest game of the season.
Someone didn't watch our game against NC State.
Liberty won't play much better and we won't play much worse 3 points is okay.
They can't keep this shooting pace up, we will be ok
What a shit first half. Lucky to be only down 3. Someone has got to start making buckets in the second half.
That was maybe the worst call I've ever seen on that block.
These refs must not understand a block vs a charge
I know I don't understand how they're defining them.
Must be by uniform color.
I swear if we lose to these bitch asses from liberty I'm going to go insane. What the fuck are we doing
For a while there, we couldn't hit a basket.
We were lucky Blackshear was getting some serious offensive rebounds.
Do these refs understand the rules of charge vs. block, because they are literally calling them opposite. Liberty player sliding in, VT called for a charge. VT player holding his position outside of the restricted area, called for a block.
Hey guys! Just came back from watching the Duke game, how much are we beating Liberty...
Shit performance all around from the team 1st half. I don't give a fuck about the stripes because neither I nor the team can control that shit. I go into every game expecting most calls to either a) go against us; b) not be called against the opposition or c) BOTH. As a result, it reduces my disappointment in that department. But how & WTF did this team do to prep for Lib on Sunday!?!? Right now, IT AIN'T WORKIN!
Right now our apparent level of preparation is indicative of Buzz spending too much time Texas house shopping on Zillow.
I actually laughed out loud, leg for you sir
Feels bad right now, but that's about as bad as VT can play offensively. Look for Buzz to push the tempo in the second half and start J rob. Considering how poorly the Hokies shot the ball and played on offense we are in good position.
We'll see...
I don't have TV so I'm listening on radio.
The fuck?
Cant watch on your phone or tablet?
the fuck indeed
I'm guessing it's prettier on radio. At least visually.
Liberty hitting threes, VT not. Started to shift right at the end.
I would like to see great officiation, but you know what I would like to see more? Better than 35.7% on FG and 37.5% on 3PTs. We do that, we don't have to worry about officiating.
Young guys do not remember VT futility in this tourney.
Correct. However, regardless of age, everybody's damn tired of it.
I think we need to clamp down on their 3 point shooting. Less concerned with their drive game and can live with mid range shots.
I don't have a good feeling about this. We have no energy and are making terrible decisions (so help me if we take one more stupid 4x covered ugly shot...there are 4 open guys!). We need to amp up our energy...play D like we did first half of StL...cause some havoc. Work the ball on O, inside out or screen cuts. Need more motion...and emotion.
We're still in it after that half. I'd expect some improvement in shooting by VT, and the refs to review how to differentiate a charge from a block. VT does need to get some hands up when Liberty is shooting a three.
Got a new 1L of Gentleman Jack today. It may not survive this game. Good grief that 1H was ugly.
Se what happens when you make shots?
These Liberty Jokers are putting me on tilt.
That's what jokers do.
Wait, are you talking about the players or those guys in makeup?
Yes.
That was a terrible shot by Bede
A consistency he possesses (bad shots).
We can't handle the big guy on Liberty.
Mostly because of the charge/block calls.
Bede can look like an all ACC caliber player when he is driving, but then he shoots....
edit: replied to wrong comment.
I am unhappy with the frequency of calls
These refs man. The block on Hill was correct becase of the restricted area but the ref behind the players calling the foul he can't see is BS
Be nice if we could hit a damn shot or get a foul call.
It's just so ridiculous. They're no calling hard fouls...but if you're near one of them when the shoot, they're calling a reach.
The big dude from Liberty is what I think I look like when I play basketball.
Our energy is gone again. Med misses a 3, everyone turns and walks the other way. 0 attempt to rebound.
Have you watched our team since Buzz took over? We almost never attempt to rebound 3pt shots.
This is correct. His (and most coaches without multiple elite bigs) philosophy prioritizes limiting transition points over getting the rare offensive rebound.
Yep. I was screaming at NAW, as the ball went right to where he had been on the shot. No effort whatsoever....just trotting back.
Nope. Not good enough. Not even a little.
We are really letting Pillsbury dough boy beat us right now.
The 5'9" freshman's not looking to shabby, either.
Is this the most poorly officiated game of the season?
Top 3 thus far
No, FSU was in my opinion.
No. That Louisville game was a crime scene.
I thought it was UNC... I hate complaining about officiating, and honestly don't think this game has been all that bad. That said, vs. UNC we were up BIG early and then the officials decided there was NO way UNC could lose and called any contact we made and nothing on UNC and the rout was on. I stopped watching at halftime because I was so pissed.
Yes. You are the winner. My bad.
This is starting to feel like a loss.
Our worst performance since Penn State?
Ok guys I turned it off, every game I've havent watched this year we have won.
K
Thanks, and leg.
I want to ask how it's going but I'm not sure what the rules for me are.
much better since you stopped watching, keep up the good work.
I downvoted this comment to bring it from +17 to +16. For obvious reasons.
Well thanks I guess.
Watching this game is strange because we all share a feeling that it is completely unacceptable to lose to Liberty for so many reasons.
We look like a bunch of pussies out there. We're bigger & stronger but we're playing like they took our lunch money & we're too scared to do anything about it. Fucking man up & punch them in the mouth Jesus Christ.
I strongly doubt He'll do that considering this is Liberty
It's a charlatan organization so I don't think you're correct.
He did wreck shop in the temple that one time...
That would certainly be a foul.
Fucking man up & punch them in the mouth Jesus Christ.
Since this is Liberty, I am fine with punching Jesus in the mouth
This comment is highly offensive.
Come on guys, get out together. Game is still winnable.
We have to get someone hot and we need to take the refs out of the game. I don't think their big can keep up with Blackshear if he played toward the basket. I'd like to see him either drive from the high post or catch it on the block and spin to face the defense and drive.
5/15 is not a good start for him in the post
Fuck it. Whatever. Every time this team either takes the lead or ties it, they immediately lose it. We'll see what happens here.
Thank God someone showing life on offense.
Outlaw better keep hitting those because his defense is ruff
Why do we sometimes put players in to rebound our foul shots and sometimes not?
A 4 pt lead is better than a 3 pt lead.
NAW has got to make that bucket
NAW has been way too quiet in this one. He should be overwhelming the Liberty guards with his size and length.
That turnover amounted to ZERO pts
FUCKING FINALLY!
I started watching at halftime. You're welcome.
What on earth was Bede doing after that 3?!
His fingers must smell like a made jump shot... maybe got it from Outlaw.
I can go years without seeing that again and be happy.
Med playing his way into an NBA contract.
What the fuck was Bede doing in that celebration?
Snortin threes. I guess it's better he do that than coke
My wife just asked the same thing. I have no idea.
Everyone likes their own brand
On NAW's whiff, the announcer said his right hand was tied up. Oh you mean he was being actively fouled...
I knew NAW was gonna miss that layup because I saw the ball roll onto his forearm on the way up. Happens to us normies all too often.
Going for the slick one hand finish and the ball rolls off your wrist.
This game is not helping my sunday scaries
Shit! Needed that 10 pt fuckin lead.
If NAW wants to be a lottery pick, he needs ten points in the second half. He has been a non factor in this game so far.
Missing point blank layups doesnt help
Multiple...plus tripping over his own feet for a travel.
He's looked like garbage.
Revising from non factor to liability.
I disagree, I think him missing easy layups has been a major factor
I was gonna say, NAW has been NULL this ENTIRE FUCKING GAME.
He's definitely been a part of the game
He's a big reason we aren't up double digits.
He has NBA talent. Just flashes it rather than playing like it most of the time.
Active on the defensive side of the ball and a couple great drives to the basket in the first half. I think the physicality and lack of calls is starting to get to him though on some of these missed easy buckets.
That's a fair observation.
If they weren't allowed to mug him he'd at least have half a dozen points on the free throw line.
He's a great player, by far VT's most talented, just painfully inconsistent.
When it's not your day...dig in and play nasty D.
If we can keep them from bombing the threes, I think we can pull this one out.
NAW is not in the game right now
NAW is struggling
Not basketball related. But that coach's wife is forgoing breast cancer treatment and is pursuing more "natural" treatments? What?!
Not going to comment no matter how stupid i think that is.
Friend of mine's mother did the same thing. When she was almost dead she elected to go the regular medicine route and somehow recovered and survived.
NAW is sucking tonight. Sometimes you have to execute rather than get fancy and he has had 2 if not 3 plays that he tried to do wayyyyy too much and lost the ball or missed it. Then he flat missed a layup
I'd like to see 5 run the point. NAW is just not in it tonight.
NAW has been absolutely garbage tonight. Trying to force way too much on his own & putting the team in really bad positions
If NAW could actually find the basket this would be an amazing performance from him. Has 4 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 steals.
If you drank every time they told us the miles separating the schools, you would have alcohol poisoning.
hic... say what?
But yet they don't mention we've traveled 3000 miles to play each other in the EAST region!
This game is already giving me alcohol poisoning
Anybody else notice the distance had decreased from 97 to 87 miles since the game started?
Continental drift is serious business.
what's the distance between VT and liberty? /s
After all of the no calls all night they call this shit on Blackshear?
Does anyone else think they way overuse and overemphasize the Bench Points "Statistic" in all of the graphics?
James with the foot shuffle that wasn't called
We need fucking points RIGHT NOW DAMMIT!!!
Calling blackshear for breathing hard now.
Everytime JAMES shoots they call a hand check. Despite him pushing off to the the ball.
FUCK DAMMIT HILL!!!
We have had every chance to pull away. This is beyond irritating.
No Med fast break dunks in this game....
just wait for it
FUCK DAMMIT!!!
What the fuck was that last bullshit call on VT?
How much money has Falwell given these refs?
A lot. Probably.
Jerry Falwell would never do such a horrible thing........./ssssssssssssss
No. But his son would...
Okay that was stupid by blackshear.
JFC Blackshear what were you thinking there
Knowing him...he probably wasn't.
We need him in there on D, if he can play smart. With him out I think James and that tight end playing in the middle will eat us alive.
Tight end, we could use him at DT this season.
Lol true
How are his tacklin skills?
That one was actually a foul...
Refs always hate [my team]
That was certainly a foul on KBJ. But what about all the contact on our end of the court. Its almost laughable at this point.
As a senior, Robinson has to pull that last one out and get a good possession common
Really poor by 5 there
What a fucking terrible reach in foul 30 feet from the basket by blackshear. Where is your head dude
I feel like I should not scream at my tv at this point in his career when he makes stupid fouls. Reach over the top on a damn entry pass that put two forearms on someone 40 ft from the basket.
I guess I just have too much Tech in me - Harvey Updike
The shooting from three...
Worst officiating I've seen.
Did... did Robinson just do a one touch pass off the ref's handoff?
Horne had position outside the arc, that was a charge.
Eh I don't think he had position.
Can someone tell me how that's a block on Horne? Was he not stationary? I honestly don't get it.
That was a block. They seem to have no trouble making the correct call when it's on our guys
^^This^^
5 getting grabbed on the drive
"And just like that, the lead goes from six to nine..."
SWEET FUCKING YES!!! SWEET 16 BITCHEZ!!!
EDIT: this aged well.
LOL, Liberty's player gets helped up by his teammates, I mean, the refs.
Great block by outlaw better acting by liberty.
Outlaw just committed murder. What a block.
Now Blackshear needs to make the free throws.
Its going to be a long 40 seconds
HOW SIXTEEN IT IS
As long as he makes them I don't care, but does it seem like Blackshear takes longer to shoot free throws than anyone on the floor?
Aannnd . . . my husband just started singing the theme song from "Who Shot Liberty Valance". Goofy man. β€οΈ
He was the
greatestbravest of them all!Love that we get to be the team to knock off ZION!!!!
Sweet 16 baby!
I DECLARE WEEKEND GIFTORY!
Bede 11:28 (i think) 2nd half
5 to Hill - 3:13 2nd half
Gimmie that FAM thread!!! What a win! What a season!
Ugly win over the Lynchburg Cult. I hope we got the bad mojo out of our system. Better bring it versus Dook and hopefully our fans show well
Cult, yeah... because Christianity just never caught on.
I just don't get the Liberty bashing. Those without sin, cast the first stone, is how I'd play it.
Nobody hates on Liberty for being Christian affiliated, they dislike Liberty for being Falwell affiliated. People don't dislike Notre Dame, Boston College, SMU, etc because of the religion connection. Maybe there's something different about Liberty... like Jerry Falwell?
And even leaving out the controversial ministry element, why can't we hate on Liberty for buying an athletic program with online tuition money?
Not only that but the decisions being made in their athletic department also raise a lot of questions, such as hiring former Baylor AD Ian McCaw as their new athletic director before all the findings have even been made public about the Baylor Sexual Assault scandal that saw McCaw resign and others fired.
Here was Falwell's comment on the decision to hire McCaw, that shows just how much they either ignored or were oblivious to
His hiring came at a really questionable time as well,
There is also the shameless grasping of affiliation, such as when Nick Foles was leading the Eagles to the Superbowl, their school athletic department seized on the fact that he was taking graduate classes through their online program and posted articles about
All fair points. That being said, I am no fan of Liberty but I think the use of "cult" was inappropriate and against the Community Guidelines.
And even leaving out the controversial ministry element, why can't we hate on Liberty for buying an athletic program with online tuition money?
Besides this, they have quite the hypocrisy of being a "good Christian school" that hired an athletic director who oversaw a rape culture at Baylor.
Are you talking about THE Jerry Falwell or his son that took over the school after his passing???
Nobody hates on Liberty for being Christian affiliated, they dislike Liberty for being Falwell affiliated. People don't dislike Notre Dame, Boston College, SMU, etc because of the religion connection. Maybe there's something different about Liberty... like Jerry Falwell?
Context from the comment above is correct.
As for sin... personally, I'd rather laugh with the sinners than cry with the saints.
If this is over the top, I apologize on the front end, and I'll take the down votes...
As a devout Christian myself, I feel a bit "yucky" to be associated with, from the public view, Liberty U. I have many great friends, amazing people, who happen to be affiliated with the school in some way, so my distain for the institution itself is in no way directed at individuals who are or who have been part of the University.
My main issue, as a person of faith, is that the $$$ have clearly taken the drivers seat. So instead of really doing the robust work of striving to find the goodness in higher education and scholarship itself, Liberty is striving, to their own admission, to be the biggest and best (best at what I'm not exactly sure).
The mission or vision statement (or whatever it is) of LU is to "Train Champions for Christ" - in every every vocational field. That sounds really cool to the evangelical world. The problem is that the institution itself is not embodying that reality in the form of good education. Its highly hypocritical.
They will never be the "Notre Dame of the Evangelical world" because there is nothing inherently robust about the education that exists there.
This article is spot on and encapsulates much of my experience with LU: Liberty U
FLAMES DOUSED!!!

Buzz wants it ugly and the team abides...
SWEET 16!
The whole Sweet Sixteen appearance will prob be a big turnoff for aTm, right?
Right? Guys?
Maybe it'll convince Buzz that he wants to stay at VT and dominate the ACC.
sloppy Sloppy Sloppy! But you just try to survive in this tourney.
I will take any win, pretty or ugly.
I'm not a mathologist, but I am pretty sure W=W.
I need to get into that building on Friday...anybody know how the tickets work for the Friday games? Is it one ticket for both games?
Any y'all got summa dem tickets??

Through VT the tickets are for both sweet 16 games and the Elite 8 game even if VT doesn't advance.
You buy either session 1 (sweet 16), session 2 (elite 8) or the whole regional strip. So yes you get all sweet 16 games there.
Depends... You can get individual game tickets on online ticket brokers, or you can get the full weekend slip.
EDIT: VT ticket office starts selling single game tickets on 3/27 @ noon: link
do you know how much they will cost through vt?
300 for the whole regional slate of games. Not sure about fees though.
