Zion Vomitosis
Buzzketball gets a second chance at Duke, one with much different lineups now that Zion and Robinson have returned. The Hokies face a monumental task in the spotlight of Washington DC. This game comes down to two major factors. How well do the Hokies score from outside and how do the Hokies handle Duke in the paint.
This will be the fifty seventh meeting between the Hokies and Blue Devils. Duke leads the all-time series 46-11, starting all the way back in 1912. Tech could really use some of that February 26th magic to reappear in the form of someone leading a barrage from all corners.
The Blue Devils are coached by Mike Krzyzewski, who has coached Duke to a 1058-284 record, an almost 79% winning percentage. Prior to Duke, Kryzewski coached Army to a 73-59 record, giving him an overall record of 1131-343. In the 38 years that Coach K has been at the helm, Duke has only managed to not make the NCAA tournament four times, and barring the year he had surgery, and relinquished the helm in 1995, it was only his first three years as head coach that they didn't make it.
One thing to keep in mind when facing Duke is a Coach K mantra, "A winning basketball team makes the opponent react to them, whether they are on offense or defense"
This team is full of stars, with the potential to have the first three players taken in the draft, which would be the first time that has ever happened in the NBA. At first glance, having Zion back for the rematch would be thought to be all the nails in the coffin but most analysts seem to overlook that Robinson was also out and how much better this team operates with him in the game. Both teams get their best player back. Duke will be missing reserve forward Jack White with a hamstring issue, so that's 4 points and 5 rebounds not available tonight. There was question during the week whether the Hokies would be missing Ty Outlaw but that issue for the game has been resolved.
Defensively, the Blue Devils employ a high pressure attacking defense that varies its form and style based on opponents. This season had been almost exclusively 3-2 zone with Williamson and Barrett responsible for the paint and the other three "guards" locking down perimeter shooters. Its hard to refer to players like Reddish or White as guards with their overall size. Duke will also rotate into a 1-3-1 formation depending on the opponent. A couple other tenets of a Coach K defense are that his defenses involve getting all five players to play together: talking on defense, seeing the ball, and moving as the ball moves. He expects all five guys to play for the charge as a standard. He also coaches his team that defense continues until the ball is in Duke hands.
Offensively, Duke usually runs a three out, two in Motion offense, which involves the perimeter players looking for bigs at the free throw line to create space, open up driving lanes, or allowing for kickout shots from the corner and did involve a ton of lob it up and let Zion fly. The Blue Devils excel at moving without the ball so they are in the right spot to take advantage of a defensive miscue. Duke isn't exactly the fastest paced offense so the Hokies should look to speed them up if they can.
Blue Devils Backcourt
Tre Jones, (#3) 6'2, 183 Lbs, Freshman Guard makes things go for the Blue Devils on offense. He is averaging 8.6 PPG, 3.7 RPG, and an incredible 5.3 APG. He is shooting 25% from outside and 41% from inside this season while shooting 71% so far from the line. Jones will look to dribble penetrate to facilitate Zion, Reddish and Barrett scoring down low.
Sophomore Alex O'Connell, (#15) 6'6, 183 Lbs, Guard, comes in having been kind of an afterthought most of the season for the Blue Devils, but with Zion out he put up 20 in their win over Syracuse, going 5-8 from outside. He is putting up 4.6 PPG, 1.8 RPG, .6 APG and 1 SPG. He is averaging over 38% from outside, shooting 60% inside and is shooting 75% from the line. This is the shooter that could turn the game inside out for the Blue Devils. The Hokies need to be ever aware of his location on the outside.
Blue Devils Frontcourt
Freshman Forward Zion Williamson, #1, 6'7, 285 Lbs, is averaging 22.5 PPG, 8.8 RPG, 2.1 APG, 2.1 SPG and 1.7 BPG. He shoots 69% from the floor, 33% from outside and 65% from the free throw line. The combination of him and Barrett down low may be too much for the Hokies to handle.
Freshman Forward R.J. Barrett, #5, 6'7, 202 lbs is the leading scorer for Duke. Barrett is putting up 23.3 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 4.1 APG, and 1 SPG. He is shooting 53% inside, 33% outside and 69% from the free throw line. The Hokies will have to be aware of Barrett's ability to find the open shooter, especially if its O'Connell.
Freshman Cam Reddish, #2, 6'8, 218 lbs this season is averaging 14 PPG, 3.6 RPG, 2.2 APG, and 1.9 SPG. He is shooting 40% from the inside and 33% from outside while also hitting 78% of his free throws.
Junior Marques Bolden (#20) 6'11, 250 Lbs is averaging 5.4 PPG, 4.7 RPG, and 1.9 BPG and will be counted on inside to cover most of what Zion's role was. Bolden is shooting 62% inside and 68% from the line.
Junior Jack White (#41) 6'7, 222 Lbs, is averaging 4.6 PPG, 5.2 RPG, 1 APG, and 1.2 BPG. He will miss this game due to injury.
Javin Delaurier (#12). 6'10, 234 Lbs. is averaging 3.6 PPG, 3.8 RPG, 1 SPG, and 1 BPG over about 14 mpg. He shoots 78% inside and 58% from the free throw line.
What to expect from Duke?
The Blue Devils play predominantly a half court high pressure defense in either man to man or zone geared towards making opponents make mistakes. Their goal is to take the ball away any way possible, limiting the number of shots that an opponent takes to instantly give them an advantage on the other end. Relentless attack on the ballhandlers so that they move from defense to offense. The ability to guard the perimeter is bolstered with the return of Zion.
The Blue Devils are the number five scoring offense in the country, averaging 85.5 PPG and only allowing opponents 66.9 PPG. That's just short of a 20 point average margin of victory so far this season. Expect Duke to use their size to get in the lane and try to overwhelm the Hokies in the paint.
Rebounding wise, the Blue Devils you would expect to be a dominating team on the glass but that really isn't the case.
Duke has six players that average over two fouls per contest Hopefully the Hokies ability to speed up the game and stretch the opponent will lead to a few more opportunities as they force defenders to reach. This could dramatically alter the course of this contest.
The Hokies
Tech needs a high paced tempo the entire game without letting up if they want to win this matchup. They have to be able to get a high number of transition baskets while forcing Duke out of its comfort zone in methodically attacking the ball. Essentially force Duke to deal with their own medicine when they are on offense. They were able to do exactly this last game and it proved invaluable in that victory.
Tech will have a tough time winning the lane on offense facing Zion and Barrett together down low so it has to be able to hit its jumpers, especially critical is hitting its perimeter shots. Tech likely needs to shoot better than 40% from outside to be a factor in this game. Duke has held opponents to 32% shooting from outside so far this year.
This may seem counterintuitive but they still need to Pound the Paint, as both NAW and Blackshear need to play a major role in this game. Getting the ball inside and forcing Duke's bigs to adjust to the Hokies challenging them inside. Hill should also play a major factor in possibly getting the Blue Devils in some foul trouble.
One thing to remember though is that Duke is averaging an unbelievable 7.5 blocks per game as a team so the
Hokies need to make sure that they get quality looks at the basket or force the defender into contact or driving into the lane will just lead to a ton of turnovers. This is one area that NAW and Robinson could get themselves in trouble, especially if they lose control of their drive, which could lead to charges.
The Hokies advantage of playing team basketball should hopefully be on full display. Smooth passing, pinpoint drives, finding open shooters. That said the Blue Devils have struggled against faster pace teams this season so the Hokies need to continue pushing the pace to keep Duke off balance.
If the Hokies take a page from UCF or UCF took a page from the Hokies that likely will be utilized, is essentially daring Tre Jones to shoot from the perimeter. UCF turned a large chunk of their game into 5 on 4 defensively.
In Closing
We need to see a game much like the last two February matchups, where Duke didn't have a chance to catch their breath. This led to fatigue in the waning moments which the Hokies were able to take full advantage of. All the arguments of talent and size go out the window when you are a step behind your opponent all night. The Hokies have speed and athleticism that Duke cannot match. They also have to make sure that they close out the game strong, rather than make the mental mistakes that UCF did late in that contest.
Duke on the other hand has a size advantage at most positions on the floor so expect Duke to back down defenders in the lane to get easy lay-ups or hook shots.
Buzz should look to stretch the floor to try to attack Duke before they even manage to get across half court so they are able to limit Duke's time to set up offensive plays but also hope to create transition baskets or foul line opportunities.
Justin Robinson. Justin Robinson. Justin Robinson. What is he able to contribute, How long can he stay on the court?
Blackshear, Blackshear, Blackshear. Jokes early in the season were made on twitter about Zion fouling out Blackshear in the shootaround. Blackshear has become much more attuned and been able to manage his foul issues but having him on the floor for the majority of the game is obviously critical to the Hokies success.
Hokies continue their domination of Duke and get a second victory over them this season, becoming the first team to ever beat Duke in the tournament after beating them in season. Hokies win 77-73.

LETS GO

Gimme more of that sunshine!
I promise I'm not watching any of it. In other words, it's in the bag.
I'm AMPED, let's take it to them once again!
Red five standing by. I'm at a bar so I won't be in this thread very much, but Godspeed to you all. I'll see you on the other side.
Awesome writeup again. I'm looking forward to the final 3 of these for the 2018/19 season!
Hopping on a 10 hour flight to Argentina. Hoping for good news after landing!!! Go Hokies!!
Game is on CBS in Pittsburgh area. They are saying tip at 9:45.
Here's to hoping Auburn signals the trend for tonight!
I'm gonna be blunt and call it now. Outlaw smokes a three to win it tonight. The buzz will be burning through this joint tonight!
And I'm gonna be smiling ear to ear
Cam Reddish knee issues...not starting....🚨
Edit: They are playing Sandman to start the game
Cam Reddish not starting. Clever move K.
5 not starting. Clever move Buzz.
Was at Columbus when no one there game us a chance. Was told "Thanks for coming, you will lose"
my response "Let's let them play"
Same mentality. Let's go boys, lay it all on the floor.
Listen to that crowd tho
Haven't seen a shot on the broadcast, but very loud both ways. What's the split?
(Let's Go chant very loud)
Damn, NAW might have a concussion
my thought exactly. they need to keep an eye on him. seems to be OK, however.
That looked nasty
Oh, we shooting shooting.
I'm liking that Bede is feeling the range
You mean "Bebe" haha
Man Bede has grown tremendously. Playing with a ton of patience tonight. And both NAW & Hill playing like DAWGs so far! LET'S GO HOKIES
Make it rain 3s FAM
Is five out or just wearing warmups for the heck of it on the bench?
Nvmd five's in
Pretty happy thus far. Gotta keep crashing the boards and moving the ball around.
This is some fun ass basketball we should do this every year!
Well my bracket is busted with UNC down. Only thing left is for tech to win it all.
ZION REJECTED BY KBJ
Ohhh, KBJ!!!
This broadcast is a literal drinking game of cliches
Resist the temptation or you will be dead by half.
OOOOOOOOOOHHHHHHHH HILLL
Getting some great rim action tonight so far.
Can I get that intravenously Hill? I NEED THAT IN MY BLOOD
Good thing hes an AHMEDIC
WHEW THAT OOP WAS NASTY. LET'S GO BOYS I'M HYPE
OH THE BABIES!!!!
This has been a fantastic game so far just from a fan of the game.
That was a sweet lob by 5 and great finish by Hill.
That's going to be one of the most used gifs on TKP, calling it.
I swear I think Hill knows just how long he can hang on the rim without getting a T
I think they let him slide a bit on that one.
I'm talking all year long tho
I'm amped and it's weird to say that for basketball
Man what a great, offensive packed, clean game so far. This is fun.
Agree with this. This is great basketball. Very entertaining.
BEDE
Bede showin out tonight
NAW got fouled about 4 times on that last possession
I thought he also traveled but it worked out anyway.
I love watching fun games like this. Boys look they are just having fun and feeling loose out there.
Good game so far
We have got to pull some separation. We're following every good stop with a bonehead offensive possession. If we weren't sinking threes, we'd be falling behind
Didn't see a lot of contact.
NAW getting some questionable calls against him
Especially after Rat man was talking to the refs.
Hah I like how the ref goes to talk to our guys when RJ was the one swinging bows.
Hill and 5 didn't come all the way to DC to play one game.
Man we are playing like freaking alpha-dogs tonight & I'm loving every second of it. Not scared at all.
KBJ or whoever's in the middle having some trouble passing it out...contributing to the turnovers.
Let's take a moment to be thankful that the refs seem to be staying out of it and letting them play for the most part.
For now. K tends to wear refs down as the game goes on.
Ol Buzz can get after those refs too
We have to find a way to score points inside the arc down the stretch of this game.
I hope we can keep shooting like this. Looking great, Hokies!
Outlaw needs to get some shots
Who is this Bede kid? Should have played him more this year :)
The previous two comments are nominally mutually exclusive
Bede playing his best game in a VT uniform
Hill's gone a little cold. But Bede has had a great half. 2 threes, a drive to the basket and offensive board and putback. He's also played some great D.
Bede is having the best game of his VT career tonight.
Okay I guess I'll drink
Bede is all over it tonight. Looks like hes possessed. What growth he has has in the last 2 months.
We both have 27 shots so far. We're shooting 42%; Duke shooting 52%. But we're making more threes.
3 > 2, math checks out #analysis
sciencemathematicsIf this is the Bede we can expect in the future, we ok, if we can get some support players
I remember 5 did not shoot well as a sophomore.
Karma
5, just pure guile.
Terrible call on Hill. He was straight up.
I think the refs almost forgot they can bail Duke out.....
3.3 secs. We should take a time out.
That was oh so close by Hill
Feel like if he didnt stumble he might have made it.
Wait til the second half. They will remember.
Bede Bede Bede
via GIPHY
Idk what the hell that is but I'm into it
That's Twiki a little robot from the 70's version of Buck Rogers. He'd walk around and say things like "Bede Bede Bede".
And it dances like Bede on the bench
How are we just bringing this up now????
Wow, up 4 at the half, gotta come out with our hair on 🔥
What a game
LOL Buzz. 😂
Oh Buzz
That was really weird, hearing VPI Victory March while the Duke band was playing on the screen.
Buzz dropping zingers in pre-half interview. I am gonna miss that guy.
I'm not gonna miss him until he's gone.
Not missing him yet...
Chill. At the very least we got 3.5 more games with the man
Seemed like he was going to skip it as she turned away...but wait, there was more.
Buzz with the jokes, lol
I LOVE BUZZ
Buzz pretty loose at the half
Lead by example!
I love Buzz!!!
Man this has been a fun game to watch so far. We've been notorious this season for coming out slow to start the 2nd half so hopefully we come out with similar energy cause they're definitely going to make a run at some point. But damn do we look like we belong or what. Love this, wish Buzz could stay forever
God dammit boys, I'm fucking fired up!
LETS FUCKIN GO
Buzz is the best halftime interview in sports.
That was one of he most enjoyable halves of basketball I have watched in a while. We only allowed a 7-0 run that we answered with a 3 ball. National stage, biggest basketball game in program history and we are loose, flying around and playing well.
Like Buzz said, we need to cut down on their points in the paint. However, we are getting Duke to play to their weakness and hoist up outside jumpers.
Legs for the Hokies in DC. The let's go Hokies chant sounds loud and great on tv.
It's great at the game. Right next to a vt section. I love you all.
OOOOOOOHHH WERE HALF WAY THERE.
Oh OH
LIVING ON PRAYER
We played a beautiful half of basketball there fam
Buzz has made this an exciting basketball school, one that also exemplifies Hokie standards. Thank you Buzz for giving us all something to be proud of, and am not only talking about the win-loss record. It's about more than basketball, and Buzz gets that.
Let's Go!!!
Is the sound guy for capital one arena a Hokie? Loved hearing Enter Sandman!
Blacksburg is LIT fam!!!
Is it just me or are the refs doing everything they can to avoid putting fouls on Zion? There were a few times I thought Zion was obviously the offending player and they call the fouls on some guy less involved.
This game (and the Houston game) will be decided by 17 points. 100% of tonight's games have done that. It's science
Cool, only 13 more to go.
Huh?
This is about to be the most stressful half of basketball I've ever watched it's a shame halftime had to come that first half was the best I've seen in my time
Agree on all counts. I'm too old for this late night March Madness shit...
I was surpisingly fresh this AM after staying up to watch the LOLUVA game. It hit me around 6 PM hard. I am running on Bender fuel.
I hear ya. I started at 2:20 with a tee time and 7 beers. Not a great way to last into the wee hours lol. And my 8 am tee time tomorrow is in jeopardy if Tech wins....
I'm not stressing. Just enjoying the ride. We aren't supposed to win so its house money. This could just be the 7 IPAs though.
Made my wife get out of my seat on the couch before the game started. I was sitting here against St. Louis and Liberty. I am not superstitious, but if I sat on the other side of the couch and we lost, I'd feel terrible!
Well past my normal bedtime and I feel like I could run through a wall. Go Hokies!!!

I really don't want to turn this game off. They have to change the pace Duke is setting out of half time. But I will if it helps get the win again.
Weak call on Outlaw, there.
Zebras making their presence known early
We are getting the swtich with Jones on Blackshear, need to take it to the post
Gotta get up around 4:45 tomorrow morning for a bass fishing tournament. Really wish we could open up about a 30pt lead real quick so I could go to sleep.
Off topic- where you fishin?
Philpott. Tough little lake.
Sorry, cleaning up a party foul in the bathroom
What'd I miss since the half?
Mini duke run, getting 50/50 calls. We're hanging tough
"A chicken wing right there!" Oh you mean an offensive foul?
Isn't a hook a flagrant 1??? 🙄
Hook and hold is, just the arm hook is a common foul
And a new point of emphasis... allegedly
Buzz needs to get in the refs ear on that, Zion was doing that nonstop against UCF
This is Duke we're talking about. There is no such thing as fouls against Duke to take away points.
You know, we were shooting better when I was drinking...
Another glass it is!
The way the announcers talk about Zion is so unbelievably cringey. Things like he'll put the fear of God in you... Kid's 18 guys, tone it down.
Bullshit jump ball call on Zion.
That was a fucking bear hug
Not sure how that wasn't a foul on Zion
Because Zion.
Refs are all of sudden a joke this half
When are they going to call Barrett for traveling. He takes two steps, pivot and double hop almost every time.
Zion over the back and hook isn't going to get called either.
Apparently KJB cant go up for a rebound without it being over the back...yet Zion climbs over and it's a highlight reel.
Ok turning it off so that Tech can win again.
Thank you for your sacrifice.
Robinson gets absolutely mauled on the drive, no foul call. But apparently Blackshear picks up his 3rd foul going for a rebound. Shocker
hmmmm
So flat, come on hokies!
Brace yourselves. The Duke calls are coming!
Where have you been??? They started 15 minutes ago...
Yes, I realize it started at the beginning of the second half. Thank you.
Refs stepped in like we knew they would
Ugh! KJ, the obligatory "stupid foul" for the game, honestly hes had 2
WOW! that Zion Alley-Oop was something else!
Yikes. Not sure what we can do differently. Refs are letting them get away with murder & we can't hit a shot. Might get ugly if we don't find a rhythm soon
This game ended when KBJ got that BS 3rd foul and it is blatantly obvious Zion can't foul no matter what he does
Need Outlaw or Hill to make a three to calm everyone down.
FTFY
He's not human...
Need to get back to our 3's, stretch the floor, they keying on that pick and roll
Even with the score so close, the last 5 minutes or so has just felt like we're letting the game get away from us and we have no answer.
Drive and kick boys. Shots will come
We need to shoot better.
Blackshear has missed like 8 layups on the 2nd half
We are slowly falling apart and it is ripping my soul to shreds
Blackshear has had a really bad game
18pts, 16rb... Bunch of offensive rebounds. Terrible game by Blackshear indeed..
Wow thanks for coming back 3 hours after the game was over to single out my comment and provide his final stats. He had a great finish to the game & really helped us with a great performance on the offensive glass. But at the point of my comment he had just had like 4 easy missed shots from point blank & a terrible turnover to Hill on a fastbreak. In context, my post was correct.
Fuk!n bonehead plays.
Too many turnovers.
Every time we get a momentum play we give it right back, really frustrating
I know I said I can live with losing to Duke, but I don't know if they just fall apart like this
The refs definitely made some bad (non)calls but we had about 4 turnovers and/or missed layups in a 2-3 minute stretch that seemed to be what really changed momentum... Just need to settle in again, not over yet.
J rob needs to put the team on his back for a few minutes and swing the game
This. We know the calls will go their way, but we are missing layups right under the basket and throwing passes straight to them.
It's a huge game, clearly a lot of Duke fans, and they're so quiet. I don't get that?
2 possession game. Chill yall.
KJ's confidence is killing us, he hasn't been right since he missed that free throw, we have no chance if he doesn't get his head out his back side, cause they are keying on 5 and 4
I think NAW's fall in beginning of game really affected him. He's had an awful game so far.
I was shocked there was no concussion check on that.
Looked good there though
"Not stopping that!"
"Oh it's a charge that will stop it"
Eat shit Nantz
How was Zion's bear hug earlier not a reach in the way Med's was?
Our jerseys don't say DUKE on the front.
We are toe to toe in the sweet 16. Whatever happens we are here
Lol fuck that and fuck dook
Wonder if Zion has ever been called for a goal tend?
JRob putting the golden child on skates. Gotta finish.
Wow. Not sure there are many guys who can recover from that move by Robinson to get a block
Damn, JRob put the move on him and he still recovered.
After that gorgeous play, 5 has to know who he is playing against there
He is the most explosive basketball player i've seen since westbrook
Zion hits Hill in the face in a spin. Foul on Hill
...and Hill never touched him.
Wrong.. Med fouled Zions extended arm with his face. 🤮
Zion hits hill, foul on hill?
It's an illegal fucking play. You CANNOT reach your arm like that. F1.
It's not incidental if he reaches out to push off.
There is no foul on hill
So Hill's face caused that foul to Zions elbow? WTF
Hah. Ok.
How much does fuckin gene get paid for this
How in the ever loving fuck is that on Hill
How in the flying fuck is that a foul on Hill and not on Zion? That is the biggest BS.
"That's just a big man using his arm in a (legal) way" - Head Offcial. Sure sure bruh.
Refs have finally broken their spirit.
Zion with a clear hook on the dunk. Why don't they call anything on Golden Boy?
He too athletic and talented. Anything he does to anybody is ok.
Exactly. If he's that big, strong and fast he shouldn't need to get away with cheating.
Ratings
Not sure what more we can do when it's 5v8
Zion must have about 9 dicks for every announcer, ref, and tv station to be sucking it at the same time.
If they sucked any harder the balls would come through the pipe..
Fuck Duke God forbid we touch Zion but his size means he can elbow anyone in the head cause you know it's all about size
8v5, can't win with those #'s
I always feel like a little baby blaming the refs but really, they have been straight trash with these calls. Zion's our there throwing bows and Hill somehow gets called a foul? Bullshit.
Ay yo that call was SHITTTTTTT
Come on hokies!!!
I have never seen 1 player get by with so much bullshit. Between the end of the UCF game and this, it is obvious they will not call anything
Zion is Teflon when it comes to the refs. His style aligns well with the NBA.
Wait until he tries that against Draymond...
My heart....
Set up a three. Let's win this one at the buzzer.
Lets just win it.
In general, as long as we score more points than Duke, I will be happy!
The seniors want it bad. Go hokies
If Grant Hill says "Buzz Wiliamson" one more time!!
Here we go bois
Holy shit
No matter what. I am proud of these Hokies!
Definitely, best team in over fifty years.
Devastatingly might be for the next 50. Crushed.
Ever notice there's a Duke alum calling every fuckin college basketball game?
Heart in my throat
Wish Robinson took that shot.
They are not calling fouls on duke now.
As opposed to how they weren't calling them on Duke earlier in the second half...
Shit....
That was fun
Crap! Great game...great season.
So close. Damn.
My favorite Hokies...Hands down
Oof
Zion smiling like he stole a game...cause he did.
Hate to be that guy, but Hill has to make that shot. 3 shots at it and we grazed the rim once in the closing 20 seconds.
So proud of this team but this is almost the worst way to see them lose
I would hate to be you too.
He was probably afraid Zion was going to hit him in the face and get called for a charge.
No he whiffed that. It's fair to say. I'm still proud of the team for fighting hard. Mad at the zebras.
Not blaming anybody but the refs. Duke is a Damn good team. Zion will actually be a better player when refs actually call fouls against him.
I'm dead inside
I know I'm alive because that hurt.
But it was a fun ride except the crash at the end.
HIll rushed the last shot just a bit. He could have held it a bit longer. Great effort tonight.
Bittersweet... that hurt though
Fuck Duke, K and all their cocksucker enablers. Thanks for the memories Buzz.
I don't know why this got downvoted cause you're speaking the damn truth
That hurts so bad ..
The fact we made it that close deserves a hell of a lot of credit we played our asses off this sucks so hard but this team was amazing
Damn. Sucks for this team to end the season like that. Hold your heads up fellas.
I really thought this was going to be our year as the clock wound down. So many missed shots but such an effort. It really feels like that was our chance at a natty for the foreseeable future, but so it goes!
Went down swinging. Had exactly what we wanted and it just didn't drop. Damn damn damn.
Man I feel bad for Hill. He'll never forget that one for as long as he lives.
That was so close.
Not enough bourbon.
how fuckin lucky can that god damn duke get. I hate those fuck heads
My soul hurts...
I REALLY hope Purdue kicks the ever-lovin shit out of uva. PLEASE!
Fucking heart wrenching
I am having a god damn heart attack right now.the hokies played their ass off but those duke fuckers slide again. delete my account, I don't care. I am tired of the duke bullshit
It just hurts you know?
Can't ask for a much better opportunity than that. Hill had it 2 feet from the basket all alone, just couldn't get it to drop. Great play by Buzz, dude is a fantastic coach & these kids are terrific people. Really excited for the future of VT men's basketball, but damn I wish Buzz was staying cause this would be fun every year.
I hate it for our players but I can't describe how proud of them I am. They fought their nuts off and took the #1 team in the land to the wire. We gave them all they wanted and damn near won it. I'm so proud to be a Hokie. LET'S GO!!
I feel beyond terrible for Hill. For him to get that opportunity as a Sr and not execute something he knows he can do 99/100 times is rough.
It just looked like he let it go a tad too soon like he was worried about the clock...oh well...hell of a game.
I hate Sean Dockery. I hate Zion Williamson.
What a amazing season. Nothing but love for Med. Dude played his bits off this year. I think is momentum was pulling him so hard he was worried about being too strong and instead he shortarmed it.
We played hard, had a chance with the final shot, which is all I wanted going into the second half. I feel for Hill, but that's just the way it goes sometimes.
Great game, and an all time Hokie team.
Gentlemen, if this ends up being the end of an era, it's been a hell of a ride. The growth and maturation of the basketball program over the past 5 years has been fairly miraculous. Virginia Tech actually has...an identity. In basketball.
The loss stings, and it will for a while. But the fact that we were even in a position to get our hearts broken like that is a strong fucking testament to the men on the floor, and their leader on the sidelines. I'll always be grateful for Med, JRob, Ty and Buzz...and no matter what happens, let it always be said that Virginia Tech CAN be a winner in college hoops. We're still on the rise. Hokie Hi.
Well said. Even with a loss, this team has been more enjoyable than the football team IN A LONG TIME.
broadnoodle did you get participation trophies when you were growing up
No...but I did get a little bit of perspective. You might want to get some of that yourself.
Ooooo I like the response
Harsh bro
Preach. What makes this hurt so much more is the (likely) rebuild on the other end of this. We can be back to this level but it is likely several years off.
Exactly. Likely no coach and 3 scholarship players? Could be straight back to the basement and that devastating.
I hear you. I share that concern. I just hope that what we've gained here is the proof that you CAN win in Blacksburg. I hope we can attract a quality candidate who can in turn attract a high quality recruiting class and continue some of this momentum. That's the absolute best case scenario (other than Buzz staying, of course), but it's the one I'm holding on to...
Several years? Shiiiit, if Buzz leaves, I'd say 10+ years before another sweet 16.
The only thing that makes me think otherwise is there is now proof that at VT you can field a competitive team in the country's best basketball conference, advance deep into the tournament, take down the Duke's and U.Va's of the world, etc. When Buzz came on board, all we really had was "at Virginia Tech you can be a part of a great team that will get shafted by the selection committee every single year."
It all depends on how much of the culture shift the program, the university, the remaining players, and the fanbase can retain. If it truly was all "Team Coach Buzz," then you're absolutely correct. We're likely heading for some dark days.
This has been "proof of concept".
And I have a lot of faith in Whit.
Fucking Zion.
Haven't felt that sad since Danny caught that pass.
Proud of the team! Can't ask for more than a chance to beat the #1 overall seed at the buzzer.
Not gonna be mad at Hill for missing that.
Wish we would've gone for the win.
Either way great game, great season, and great era of BUZZKETBALL!
We did go for the win, twice. We had 3 attempts at the win or tie.
It's already been said a few times.
Great play call. But I hate that for Hill. I know that's going to haunt him for a long time. Hate to lose but I hate how he must feel right now much more.
We had a chance to win so I hate to blame the refs. They called some tough good calls against Duke in the last minute. But that 5 minute stretch in second half where they were awful ruined it for me.
That was my first thought, too - he's going to be completely devastated. He's never going to get over that. He'll beat himself up for the rest of his life.
Then I remembered a picture I saw of him holding his young daughter, and I have a feeling he's going to be just fine.
Oh agreed.
And between us I hope he's fine by Monday.
But I had plays haunt me for years and I didn't play remotely at this level. He makes that shot probably 99/100 times. If we had to lose I would've preferred a tough 3 that you can't blame yourself for.
But what a playcall. Duke never saw that coming.
I knew when it was an in-bounds play that Buzz had something drawn up. They've been fooling people all year. Just didn't quite make it this time.
Coach K even admitted that last shot was the perfect call, it just didn't quite work.
Ahmed is the best. He is an absolute stud. His play was one of the only reasons we were close at the end. I have a hard time bringing in his family into this discussion.
Can you clarify? I only brought up his daughter to express relief that he'll have the support to get over this loss, but if I was out of line I apologize.
I practically broke my hands on my coffee table when Hill came up short. I felt that man's pain in more ways than one. Always a good day to be a Hokie, what a game for these guys.
Proud of our team. That is all.
Too bad the play didn't end like this
Man fellas.... I feel like I just said goodbye to someone that I'll never see again. It sure feels like the end of something.
I love this basketball team!
I think you are right
Refs weren't absolutely awful but they did make some calls turned out to be consequential. I fucking hate Duke, they're getting absolutely lucky as fuck. I think we win this game at least 7 out of 10 times. UCF probably wins those last two minutes 9/10 times.
If they had reversed the call on Hill to be justly on Zion, or called any of the early calls on Zion instead of people standing near him, he would have fouled out halfway through the game.
Just imagine if Hill makes the dunk he missed in the first half...
Or we make one of the 7 shots we missed from 2 feet...
Or if Tre Jones doesn't go 5-7 from 3pt range
That's the dagger. He's not a good shooter from distance and he absolutely lit it up and made us pay.
This so much. He had a career game tonight.
Anyone got a replay of the first blocked shot by Zion? I swore it was goaltending and told my wife "we better not lose by freaking two points after that no call"... and here we are. I'm salty.
Wouldn't have made a difference...oh wait...
I've been saying the same thing....Kerry is 6'10" that ball had no where else to go but down
Refs woulda made up for it somewhere else
I cannot wait till Rat retires
Watching the post game and he has spoken very highly of our program. Claims we were one of the top 10 teams in the country.
Sports are great. I loved feeling sick to my stomach for the past few hours only to have the payoff be incredible sadness.
For real, why do we do this to ourselves? Why don't we just rally around our engineering department achievements or something?
The only thing that can take away this sting for a long time is if Buzz says he is staying.
Love this team so much! Never felt prouder to be a Hokie. I literally almost shed a tear when that shot rimmed out cause in a way all 5 years Hill has been at VT flashed before my eyes and I felt terrible for the young man.
Despite the BS calls, we had 2 shots to win, and 1 shot to tie. And that's all I can ask for.
As for Buzz, go to Texas sir, you've given your blood sweat and tears for this school, you owe us nothing. I'd love for you to stay, but if you left I wouldn't be mad at him one iota. Hopefully the inbound coach (Please Gregg) will see how Hokies turn out. That was a home game and it sounded like it all night long, from Sandman till the buzzer.
On that note, love all my fellow alums, sleep well, and Go Hokies!
Not even mad. Bummed about how it ended though. I can take a little solace in that tip in was just to send it to OT because I'd be devastated if that was for the win.
But you just gotta tip your cap to Duke. They just happened to be the (barely) better team tonight. We played about as well as you could ask for and just came up short (literally). Yes, we shot poorly in the 2nd half but a lot of that was due to Duke's aggressiveness. An example, first half we shot 17 threes and made 7. With 2 minutes left in the 2nd half, we had only shot 7 threes total. They really took away a lot of our good looks. Then you factor in that Tre Jones made everything, that's the game. We gameplanned to leave him open and he stepped up and beat us.
We did what we could do, it just wasn't enough tonight. That's all you can ask. Go Hokies!
I don't care how many negative comments or ref blowing call comments there are on this thread (I read none of them). That was a good fucking game and I'm proud as fuck of this team. They never gave up. The plan was incredible, we executed as well as we could and fell just short.
Go Hokies I love this team.
Ugh Hill is the fucking man. With everything he went through last year and how much he rebounded this year, totally made sense he would get a shot to tie it.
Unfortunately, he def must have thought he had only time to volleyball tap it vs a basketball tap in (maybe even maybe dunk it?). Worst feeling since the Michigan football game but damn that was fun to watch.. I'd thought I'd never say this but I would take basketball over our football team any day in the current state. BUZZ PLZ STAY!!
The way he tipped it was definitely the way you'd do it if you thought you had 0.6 seconds left. Not sure he realized they added more time. It's just one of those deals. Sucks to be on the bad end of it.
He had time vs the clock, but what about that 18 year old man-child breathing down his neck? You saw him recover after Five broke his ankles. I would have given it just a quick tap too!
I haven't felt this bad since the Michigan sugar bowl, when I knew the team as we knew it was done. We dominated that game but lost. Now we didn't dominate tonite, but we weren't going to win. It felt exactly like the sugar bowl. That was beamers high water mark. Same with hoops tionite. It will be a long time before we ever reach this level on the basketball court. Not negative, only fact
Drained! Duke is good but damn are they lucky. It took all Duke had to beat Tech. I have a feeling MSU may put an end to their luck.
Dax wins Twitter tonight!
I'm KOing everybody I see wearing a Duke shirt on campus tomorrow. Y'all have been warned.— Dax Hollifield (@ChiefDax_25) March 30, 2019 " target="_blank">
Jamie Luckie needs to hang it up. He missed the hook by Zion (who initiated the contact), the goal tend by Zion, a bad call on outlaw against RJ where Ty went straight up, several out of bounds plays and about a million other calls over the last 20 years in the ACC.
It's time for him to be done. He has always sucked, but tonight was epically bad. I realize games like that you have to take the win, but it's infinitely harder with some of those calls.
Obviously, I'm salty. Nothing but love for Ahmed. Not focused on the last play and I hope he doesn't either. The guy was the heart and soul of this team.
Disagree with the take that the refs were especially bad. There were some questionable calls, but this game was about as well officiated as any Duke game I have seen.
game was about as well officiated as any Duke game I have seen.
Except for Jamie Luckie... Seriously, if you watch a lot of hoops with no emotional attachment to the game he is a really terrible official. Lazy, does not hustle to see through the play, inconsistent. Has no business being in the ACC and Def not sweet 16
That's a little generous right there. They missed an east Zion goaltend on KBJ early I the game, and after rewatching the game, Zion should have fouled out with about 7 min to go (armbar on Hill, 2 reach ins called for jump ball, foul on drive with robinson) But that wouldn't be good for TV so alas here we are
I hate how the game ended, but it was a damn good one. I think what I'm most proud of though is that we looked like we belonged in that game. We looked like Duke's equal. We were big dogs this season. I feel privileged to have gotten to watch this team play and develop this year. And as a bonus we got 5 back for three games when many people thought he may never play as a Hokie again. I love you all. Go Hokies!
Brutal, wish one of these big ones would start going VTs way one day.
Ouch. Hill makes that play all the time. I think he pulled that exact play against St. Louis or Liberty earlier in the tourney.
Our team played well but left a lot of points on the court. We had six straight possessions without points. It's hard to overcome that against a team like Duke. It's a big stage, it was historical. Those guys must have felt a lot of pressure and making those shots fall became harder.
Regardless we should be proud of this team. They're fighters. They never gave up.
Go Hokies!
After sleeping on that crushing outcome, I feel a little better. We gave them a game for 40 minutes - pushed them to the limit. Three shots to win or tie at the end of the game is all you can ask for against the best team in the country with arguably the best two players. I'm disappointed that we don't move on, and that the group of great kids have their careers at VT come to an end, but happy that we got to be there in the first place.
When I did the math, I just realized that lady luck wasn't with us at the end of the game. Med makes that shot 30% of the time, Ty probably makes even that contested three 30% of the time. If I remember the math right, that means about 50% of the time one of those shots goes in. Add in Med making that shot at least 9 times on of ten, and the chance we don't win or extend the game drops to 5%. I would have accepted those odds to make the Elite 8 at any time in the season, especially at the end of the game. The ball just didn't bounce our way.
In another thread about Buzz, I gave my favorite Dr. Suess quote, and I'll add it again after this game:
Don't cry because its over, smile because it happened.
Remember how we use to be disappointed when we always seemed to be one of the "first four out" during tournament selections? Remember settling for the NIT? Guys, we were a freakin' 4th seed this year at the big dance! That's rarified air and I like it.
... must
. ... have
. . ... more.
That's what I what I want to here from Blackshear
The next morning and that loss just feels soul crushing. So proud of the way our guys played, but man to lose like that hurts.
I thought we were the tougher team last night and gritted our way to almost winning.
Duke's edge in talent showed and was the reason they won. Their margin for error is a lot larger than ours.
I could complain about referees, but even a well officiated game would a have one or two calls that would swing a close game.
I ain't complaining, but I do find it peculiarly interesting how Zion has managed to steer clear of foul trouble during this tournament.
Has something to do with his ability to bear hug someone without it getting called a foul.
