A natty under Bennett and probably this year. That opinion was met with mixed reviews of course, and I don't blame anyone since it is a hokie board after all. But, I had a feeling. Super coached team with 3 NBA players, some size, great defense, great 3 point shooting, running roughshod through everyone in the ACC except Zion, etc etc. I thought they were the best team in the country in December and I think so now. Add in the incredible horseshoe's in their arse the past 2 games and I think they win by 12-15 points tonight, and our lives suck in terms of UVA fans henceforth... You think they are arrogant and bring up the fact we have zero championships now??? lol multiply that by 1,000 in terms of annoyance. IT IS GOING TO SUCK if they win.... Go Red Raiders... please for the love of god.
Welp, I said on this board in December that UVA would win

Clown Dis, which might actually be fitting?
And this is why we need TKP.
TT isn't going to go down easy. I have confidence in the Raiders playing better defense than the Hoo's and winning.
Raiders play super physical and are one of the best hustle teams in the country. If they play like they did Saturday I think they beat UVA.
I agree
They need to be up by more than 9 points under 10 seconds left though... not TIC...
Slight exaggeration but true have to curb the absolute ridiculous ability for UVA to stay calm and get extremely lucky.
And if they do, so be it.
Maybe actually watching UVa win a major National Championship will wake up our donors and athletic department to realize that, hey maybe we should strive for something better, too.
We keep patting ourselves on the back for the football streak, but at the end of the day that means nothing when they've got titles and we don't. A natty in basketball trumps anything we've ever done (and lets be honest, their natty in baseball already does, but its harder to ignore this one). Period. I hope that doesn't sit well with our fans, alumni, boosters, and staff.
Agree 100%
Seems a little sad if insecurity (or little brother complex) turns out to be the biggest motivator for the alumni base. But hey, I guess that's college sports. Regional rivalries at their finest.
F*#K LOLUVa
You projected a 1 seed to make the championship....
Whupty do for you.
Thanks for the extra negativity. If they win, so be it.
I liked it better before the edit.
As did I, but trying to keep things civil I guess.
Huh?? They weren't a 1 seed in December, and there were plenty of people that dismissed my opinion. What is the point of this post? To slam me? cool. But i'm being "negative" gotcha.
Dude, they were preseason No. 5, and the No 4 team in the country in late December.
Way to go out on a limb.
And because of my amazing prediction, I decided to make a new thread that was totally new thread worthy.
For real though, why is this the only user that thinks his poorly articulated opinion warrants its own thread.
How is my opinion poorly articulated...? oh you disagree with it. Gotcha
UVA wins NCAA tournament = Uncomfortable thing for Hokies.
Thank you for that mind blowing insight.
And thank you for putting it here, rather than a more appropriately named thread. It would be rough to have to scroll through everyone else's commentary in order to get to this gold...
Silly me.. the actual DAY of the game where our arch rival is playing for their first real national championship but gives us ENDLESS grief already about not having any championships is a poor topic.. TODAY.. the day of the game. On the public basketball forum. Right. Totally off topic and ill timed/ill related.
I don't necessarily disagree with you. It's your whiny tone, both in this thread and historically, that is absolutely insufferable.
My tone probably is a bit whiney... yes.. tough few days for Hokie hoops.. Buzz leaves 3-4 scholarship players in his wake, and UVA pulls out a final four game down 4 points with under 10 seconds left. Not the most upbeat time in hokie sports I admit.
Your mistake was that you made it about you.
In all seriousness I think we need to talk about adding some sort of community guideline to put an end to your shitposting. If you had simply titled this "UVA Going to NCAA title Game" with a brief description on your feelings about it that would be fine, but that's not what you did. This is some self aggrandizing clickbait that seriously degrades the quality of the discussion on this site, and at least once a week it's something else.
I don't know what to propose exactly in terms of a new guideline, but it really does feel necessary at this point.
Perhaps a mute feature
And you were forced to click on it....how?
Look at me, Look at me.
You should have posted a link to your December prediction, that way we could go back and give it a leg.
I have never seen someone pick a #1 seed to win, and then start a thread just to draw attention to themselves. Make no mistake....this thread is not really about UVA....its about YOU, and wanting to gloat about a prediction that a child could make. Your post offered no insight, just you, rehashing a prediction you made, to draw attention to yourself.
Stop worrying about UVA.
They won. I dont care. I dont care if you predicted it.
Man up....they earned it and they won it.
I'm focused on the Hokies rebuilding and future success.
You clearly add value to the thread with the faux board host moral high ground outrage too, yes.
GUNS UP BABY
Tech beats UVA for first national title. I like the sound of that!
Once again, we have a Bass Fishing Natty. If douche canoe UVA fans want to brag about their 1941 Boxing national championship and 1980 Women's Rowing Team, then I'm happy to shove a Bass Fishing Natty in their brie cheese eating faces.
But yes, you are correct, they will be insufferable. I've also seen multiple VT fans say they are happy for UVA. Uh, no, no I'll never be happy for them to win in anything and I don't understand any Hokies feeling otherwise.
Hopefully UVA loses to another Tech tonight.
The issue is that "Bass fishing" is not an NCAA sanctioned sport. UVA probably has club sport natty's too. But they have real ones, so they don't mention it.
UVA folks wouldn't know what the hell to do with a Baitcaster. They do look snappy in a blue blazer, though.
I understand, but UVA fans don't know the difference. They simply want to brag about all of their titles, so if Women's Rowing gets them going, Bass Fishing counts too.
I'd be happier getting the clap than I would watching UVA win a title. Any other opinion is wrong
If it ain't the Red Raiders, it's an asterisk. #Doubledribble.
Getting the clap is usually the fun part. It's having the clap that sucks.
(I wouldn't really know, honestly. My high school had really thorough sex ed that scared/prevented me from doing anything without protection until I was married. Wrap 'em up kids.)
Quoting for truth.
Why didn't you predict Virginia Tech to win the national championship if your predictions are highly accurate?
IF my "predictions" were always highly accurate- which I never said or even hinted at...I would have picked the Hokies, yes.
Oooo DC you let the sarcasm go right over your head
Doesn't matter. Still haven't beaten us in football this decade.
If we as a fanbase honestly think our streak in football over them trumps their potential basketball natty....yeah we're delusional and don't deserve to win one. That's a pitiful thought process. Good god...
You should check the italics in my signature!
Besides, there's really nothing to debate here. They're in the championship game, and we have beaten them in football so many times in a row. Both are facts and nothing that we as a fanbase think about either affects the world in any meaningful way. I suggest relaxing and just having fun!
Wait, people actually read those?
Saturday, my wife made the statement that "Well, Tech had a great year, and UVA is having a great year...can't you just be happy that somebody from the state is going to play in the final four?" My response was "WAR EAGLE". So tonight it will be "Guns up". It's going to be downright insufferable around here if LOLUVA wins.
Your response was wrong...
its WAR DAMN EAGLE
You ain't shittin. Positive note: I'll be a shoe in at the Oscars next year for Best Actor. TIME TO GET INTO CHARACTER!
Don't worry Chris Beard is gonna take it for us, UVA football isn't the only one that chokes. UVA B-Ball has 2 of the biggest upsets in history in the bag, hopefully they choke here too.
Seems like your victory lap might be about one day early.
DC Wilson Celebrating Being Right
I see you, and raise...
let's practice what we're going to say should the dread event happen tonight. Ready?
1.....2.....3 *deep breath in*
Well, there's still The Streak.
I always pick whats best for VT.
In this case, it's a UVa win. Good for the ACC, good for VT. The state of Texas/Texas Tech getting a national championship in basketball does nothing for us.
As much as it sticks in my throat, Go Hoos.
Edit: Eh, what's with the downvotes? We're not allowed to have opinions here?
Trying to understand how UVA winning is in any way good for VT? Love to hear the rationale. Thanks
I'd say that a strong ACC is good for us. We play the best on a regular basis. I want the ACC to have the best teams, the best coaches, and the best players. And while Virginia winning doesn't directly do anything for us, if they stay strong and we beat them here and there, it does make us stronger.
I certainly think that being able to say we play in the strongest conference is a good selling point. Sure seemed to be when Buzz used it.
Texas Tech winning does NOTHING for us.
A strong ACC in hoops- perhaps the strongest period in the leagues history- got us a crap TV deal compared to every other major conference... so nope, that doesn't help VT. let's see.... UVA being the clear cut flagship hoops program in the state and can recruit now with a national championship banner? nope that doesn't help VT. UNC beating us in hoops roughly 98% of the time and Duke roughly 75% of the time in hoops under the "ACC banner" helps VT? nope. UVA winning "for the ACC" won't help VT at all.
I understand I'm in the minority here, and did, even before I made the comment.
What I'm saying is that the ACC being perceived as strong also helps the perception of VT when we win conference games.
Which is why we were a #4 seed in this year's tournament.
Yes, we were the indirect beneficiaries of the perception regarding the ACC.
You will have 0/100 people argue with the statement "The ACC is the best basketball conference in the country" if UVA wins or UVA losses tonight.
Eh, what?
There were people on this board arguing that the SEC is shiny new conference in basketball last week when Buzz was leaving.
I seem to remember a similar thread In the Football forum where the consensus seemed to be Clemson winning the national championship Wasn't good for VT. Not sure how that logic is twisted now that it's basketball
ACC is already viewed as the best conference. Like by far nationally. That wasn't going to change anytime soon.
"Strong ACC hoops" didn't bring Gregg Marshall to Tech. This conference supremacy stuff is bunk.
Trying to understand why this is such an important topic to you. You posted in December, posted this topic with a link to that December post, and want to be grouchy all throughout all posts. How is that good for anything?
I loathe the meme's, retorts, FB posts, Twitter posts from insufferable UVA fans after we beat them every year in football or any other sport that is always "yeah but we have 50 team national championships and VT has zero in any sport".. now imagine them getting a real, revenue, national championship... with VT's top programs still nowhere close to that. Hell Wrestling is very, very, very good but not really close to a Natty in all reality. It's going to be insufferable for the next 100 years. it really is. Cmon Texas Tech
agree
Guns Up!!
And good for Texas Tech to be honest. They are always the third tier here in the state, and hell even lower than that when you throw in Baylor/TCU/SMU. They are also the only program in the state that has really put an effort into being good at basketball, and that has been the case for years. They even went out and hired Bobby Night for christ sake!!
Fuck LOLUVA, go Red RAIDERS!!
Side Note: Lubbock is probably going to burn to the ground tonight regardless of the result.
This Twitter feed is the picture of futility when you know what's coming.
The city would sooner stop tectonic shift than prevent what's going down in Lubbock tonight.
Yeah this is certainly not the best result for VT and take back what you just said.
Oh, like Clemson winning the first natty a few years back was a huge boon for VT and the ACC as a whole in football?
Certainly didn't hurt us.
Would work better, of course, if we could occasionally beat them.
I hope you're not serious. Clemson recruits directly against us in regions. Selling National Championship Clemson Tigers has certainly hurt us. Rooting for you conference opponents to win a national championship definitely hurts us directly.
Come on. That's a bit overplayed, isn't it?
Me hoping an ACC team wins it all isn't hurting our recruiting one tiny bit.
What would help us is being better at playing football, and not losing to ODU.
I'm not pulling for us to be in the weakest conference so we can win it. I'm pulling for us to be in the strongest conference, so when we win it, it means something.
So yeah, if we can't win it, I'll pull for Clemson in football, and I'll pull for UVa in basketball.
You're right in that your hope has no bearing on recruiting. But it appears that you're saying that a regional power's sustained success doesn't hurt us in recruiting and it's just not the case when we compete head-to-head for a player.
Yes all of things would help. We've proven we're not a weak conference in basketball.
Rooting for a conference opponent to win always results in more harm than good. I don't see how anyone can logically argue that UVA winning because "conference" is a good thing. Same with Clemson in football. The ACC is an established conference, we should root for VT and VT pulling recruits not other teams having more to sell recruits than we have. It's not at all overplayed.
Clemson has signed 4 5 star QBs alone since VT signed Kendall Fuller... think about that. Their program recruits on an entirely different level now. We are nowhere close.
I'd say that our recruiting by and large has little to do with Clemson, except when it's head-to-head. And even then, we need to sell on the strengths of our program.
Imagine Kellin Ferrell on our DL last year instead of any of the DE's we trotted out there. He is much better than any of them, including Trevon Hill. He is from Richmond... VT recruited him very hard.. the list is longer too.
You make a good point.
I'll still be pulling for UVa tonight.
I get not being upset if UVA wins...well no I don't really but...to actively pull for them? That's a big yikes from me.
Well, "pulling for" may have been a bit strong. I'm not going out and buying a t-shirt or anything. But I couldn't care less about Texas Tech.
KJ
VT Coaches to potential bluechip football recruits: Hey, so we play in the same conference as Clemson. They won the Natty and consistently make the playoffs. That means you want to play with us, right?
Bluechip Recruits: ...
Bluechip recruits signs with Clemson.
Yeah, that perception seems to benefit us.
I disagree with VTKey BUT at the same time I routinely see the narrative that recruits go to SEC teams, not just because of the the specific team (obviously Alabama is a huge draw) but because of the strength of the conference and getting to play against the best.
So I understand the stronger ACC argument as trying to build the same appeal for ACC teams. That being said, no way in hell am I cheering for UVA tonight.
They also have the most $$$. Everything is nicer. Football is religion to the south. Athletic budgets are huge in the SEC compared to the ACC.
The SEC has the most money in football. I certainly don't want to concede basketball to them, too.
Luckily the SEC just doesn't have the passion for basketball that they do for football. ACC is comfortably the premier bball conference in the country and that won't be changing any time soon.
I'm still mad because I thought it should have been a no-brainer for Buzz to stay at VT.
So I won't be pulling for any Texas teams in the foreseeable future.
??????????????????????????????????????
are you saying that it didn't hurt us because we could theoretically beat them?
No, I'm saying that when we DO beat them, I want it to be because we're strong, not because they're weak.
Our recruiting efforts say otherwise.
I refer you to my first point
So Clemson is the reason our recruiting isn't stronger?
I don't believe that.
They've definitely had a hand in that in Dabo era; yes.
Their recruiting footprint overlaps ours, and we recruit the same players. They're just another school that now poaches the top players out of our region because of their national prestige because they've won a Natty (now 2) with their current coach. They are a major reason why we are not able to get the top end talent to push us over the top that we had back basically from 1995-2012.
Its not a coincidence our fall from grace almost directly overlaps with their rise to power. Hell, their rise started with 2 upsets over VT in 2011.
Yes, it is... they have gotten several players we were after directly. They recruit the same territory we do, and they do it much better... mostly because they have 2 national championships in the last 4 years. they are 1A behind Alabama right now, and we have to recruit against that head to head. of course it hurts us.
Frankly, I'm a LOT more worried about UNC than Clemson right now.
Would UNC winning a national championship next year be good then?
No, can't say I'd want that.
Okay wtf.
In state, in division, rival winning national championship in basketball: Good for VT
Out of state, in division winning national championship in football: Not good
I'm not going to win you over, so what's the point?
But I do see a difference between where UVa and Clemson are in those respective sports and where VT is. We're playing catch up to them in those sports.
I see UNC in football as a bigger threat. We're ahead of them in football, so their recruiting gain is much more at our expense. Plus they're a lot closer than Clemson. Yes, I'd have some resentment if they passed us up and went all the way to the top in one year.
Feel free to disagree, but that's the way I see it.
Not sure UVa winning or losing tonight is going to affect our head-to-head recruiting against them all that much.
I have some bad news for you then
I've already seen it, and it doesn't make me happy.
From the Community Guidelines on posting a new topic:
counterpoint: dude, he called it
And yet a thread that follows those guidelines (A comparison of rosters as Young comes in) and was posted 2 hours earlier than this one is getting much less burn in the comments. Seems to me the community engages more with this type of topic, even if it's just to dogpile on the creator in some cases.
LOL. Leg.
More insufferable - definitely. But we could win a natty in football 2 out of the next 5 years and compete in basketball and does any one in here honestly think that would change our perception to UVA or make them less insufferable? It doesn't matter what Tech does, the air of superiority will always be thick with that school. If they win so be it. I'm not losing sleep. I keep donating and cheering on my Hokies.
That's way too mature... get a grip dude /S
DC and posting a bummer thread before a game to gloat about how he was right. Name a more iconic duo.
From a human interest standpoint, UVA winning the natty would be a cool story. Last year, they suffered what might have been the most humiliating loss in major sports history. You go in as the #1 seed and lose to #16 UMBC by 20 when you were favored to win by 23? Tony Bennett is seen as a great coach, great guy, and someone whose teams under-perform in the tournament every year. Kyle Guy has a well-documented history of being hot garbage in the tournament.
And now? Tony Bennett shuts up everyone who criticizes his style. Kyle Guy beats Auburn by hitting a 3 with 9 secs left, and hitting 3 clutch FTs with 1 second left after being down 4. The guys who suffered the humiliating loss get the taste of being a champion.
Is there any tiny part of your Hokie heart that would be happy to see them win this?
Cute story but no
NO.
I want them to lose in everything.
The answer is no , for $100.00
Anyone else find themselves rooting even harder for Texas Tech simply so that DC would be wrong?
10 years ago, I said UVA would win a national championship in basketball one day. Nailed it.
