Ask TKP: Would you rather? Schadenfreude edition

Choose between the two:

Option A: Overall #1 seed UVA loses to #16 seeds UMBC in 2018, and UVA wins national championship in 2019

Option B: Neither of the above occurs, but UVA makes two consecutive Final Fours in 2018 and 2019.

Why?

Option B leaves the Whos without hardware, so that seems like a pretty easy pick

21st century QBs Undefeated vs UVA:
MV7, MV5, LT3, Grant Wells, Braxton Burmeister, Ryan Willis, Josh Jackson, Jerod Evans, Michael Brewer, Tyrod Taylor, Sean Glennon, and Grant Noel. That's right, UVA. You couldn't beat Grant Noel.

If you play it, they will win.

Technically speaking, you still get hardware for making the Final Four. Its a smaller bronze version of the main one for winning a regional.

I think we've gotten a couple of those in at least soccer. I know we got one in wrestling a few years back for finishing 4th.

But I agree with you. Option B, it leaves them without a Natty. Breaking through to get one opens a lot of doors I would have preferred remain closed.

Any scenario where UVA does not win a championship being down the last 12 seconds of their last 3 games... that one... #2...

Option B by far. Natty wipes the upset away and is the trophy/history forever. Final Fours are nice but no championship.

Thing is, in a couple years, only UVA fans will remember who won in 2019. Everyone will always remember who the only #1 to lose to a #16 was.

Now finish up them taters; I'm gonna go fondle my sweaters.

Except now it will always be part of the story about the team that redeemed itself by winning the championship the next year.

Really? I think that the #16 loss has significantly been exorcised. Yes people will talk about it, but not in the same vein. Before the NATTY you had just the complete collapse end of story. Now, it will always be linked to how the core of THAT team turned it around and made the most of it and won the whole thing.

Valid point.

I only have one Hoo friend that I see maybe once a year...if we're ever discussing this, I'll just bring up UMBC, then punch him in the nose, and walk away before he can respond with the 2018-2019 story.

I need to find an acceptable workplace equivalent.

I guess not to many people like A, but that's what I pick. I dont know who won last year. But from now until another 1 seed loses UVAs failure will be mentioned every March. 30 years later they will still mention it.

While I think it's a valid point that years down the road only loluva fans will remember who won the NC in 2019 and everyone will remember them losing to a #16, that leaves out the fact that 30 years down the line when some talking head is talking about their loss the next statement will be, "and then the next year they won the whole thing." Not to mention, how even more indescribably insufferable the hoo fans are about to become.

I like the option where the UVa football team never wins a game against the Hokies again. Ever.
