I haven't seen it announced anywhere but I got the "5 Things to Know" e-mail for the spring game and saw that the Effect shirts are going to be for sale as expected but not which games are the Effect games. I looked at HokieSports and SGA Facebook pages and didn't see anything there. Finally I check the schedule and saw that they are updated there. According to that they are:
Orange Effect: 9/14 - Furman
White Effect: 9/27 (Fri) - Duke
Maroon Effect: 10/19 - UNCheat
I wasn't a big fan of White Effect being the Duke game since that is one of their primary colors but then I realized it will probably look good under the lights since that is our night game this year. Anybody else have any thoughts?

I don't get why we wouldn't want to wear orange jerseys against ODU...
Also, it should be noted that:
Hall of Fame Day & Band Day – ODU (9/7)
Orange Effect & Military Appreciation – Furman (9/14)
White Effect – Duke (Friday Night 9/27)
Maroon Effect & Homecoming – UNC (10/19)
"Hokies For the Hungry" & Senior Day – Pitt (11/23)
I don't think White Effect will look good because it's got by far the lowest participation of all the "effects". Not a fan.
It seemingly rains every year its white effect. white out whatever you want to call it.
Correct, it is actually wet t-shirt effect.
I dont see the issue
No issue until we lose.
I still call the JMU game The World's Saddest Wet T-Shirt Contest.
We've never played JMU.
Michael Vick would disagree
It also rains when we play Duke.... 2 years ago it was a MONSOON.... I remember the team using the NEZ as a slip and slide
Stop reminding me of ECU 2014
Which is why I'm trying to figure out why we don't have the white effect every time UNCheat comes to town and guarantee that W?
this is what I would like to have:
Orange: Duke
Maroon: UNCheat
Enter Night (all Black): Pitt
drop PSU white out knock-off bullshit and stay true to brand with the greatest entry in college football. And can we come up we better monikers for these than "effect"? Where is the VT marketing team? we pay bucks to have some terrible graphic designer give us a shitty circa 2000 logo and we can't pay some people to come up with some clever nicknames?
Slightly confused - why wouldn't Duke be the enter night all black game? That's at least guaranteed to be a night game.
I consider Pitt a bigger rival than Duke and no reason why Pitt couldn't be a night game.
^ Came here to say this. Enter Night blackout game is a no-brainer.
With black being my favorite color (I know that's debatable) and as a metal head this would be the greatest thing ever.
Orange Effect can stay as it seems to have some thought. Maroon Monsoon or Maroon Platoon combined with Military Appreciation, etc seems too easy not to do it. Stadium Stripe game or Line the Lane game would be two others. I agree with dropping the White Out game and replacing it with Enter Night, which would be great to do for a 3:30 game later in the year, as in the sun sets early when the team takes the field.
most of the work from the effect games come from SGA which actually sits outside of the marketing team. The slogans and designs are submitted usually by students and there is one person from marketing on the committee that has a say on the ones that are selected so it might not be appropriate to lay all the blame on marketing
Yes I know and while this is true I am a firm believer that if the Athletic Department wanted to change these names they would be able to do so, and are not be held hostage by the decisions of the SGA.
I wasn't a big fan of the blackout idea for football but your marketing pitch makes it much more intriguing.
Should drop the White Effect and do a "Maroon and Orange Effect" where the West stands and South endzone wear Maroon and the East stands and North endzone wear orange, or vice versa.
Yes! replace the White Effect with the Stripe that we did against ND
The stripe effect looked way cooler than I anticipated and I think it should become a regular thing. Replace the white effect with the stripe effect.
I'd go along with that.
Almost couldn't believe it worked the first time, but it did, and was very cool. May be even better now that most everyone has both maroon and orange shirts.
Yea, this may sound extreme but, to a degree I actually base my decision on whether to attend the game or not if I see it a White Out game.
Look, there are only 6 home games per year and with an adult schedule, travel, cost etc maybe 3 that I can go to. I want that maroon and orange atmosphere for every game--especially if I'm bringing non-V friends for the game day experience. I don't want to have to explain to them why 60% of the crowd is wearing white because some half-baked "White Out" nonsense.
It's like the rain games where I get a little sad inside that the crowd is going to be an array of colored ponchos except here we are doing White Out by choice. And, perhaps it's all in my head but, the crowd seems like into it these games (or maybe because it's usually against a weak opponent early in the season).
Please, scrap White Out.
AME Effect every game por favor
I'm good with them except orange. Wish that was for an ACC game.
Some pretty great games in the past were orange effect.
Scrap them all until we start winning home games, and have legit opponents on the schedule to have some type of manufactured hype for the crowd to wear a color. Who cares what everyone is wearing to play ODU or Furman? And seconding the ideas to scrap white altogether for Enter Night black ". Fund the SCA another way nd stop relying on these weak promotions
Why do you think tradition should be stopped just because we are not as good as we used to be or we dont have strong opponents on the schedule? Tradition is something that transcends a particular team/player/coach at any given point. The Effect games are a fun easy way to get fans involved in the game.
I agree that the home schedule this year is less than ideal, but that happens. Everything comes in cycles. Considering we lost to ODU last year, no game is a gimme. And for the superstitious people, they dont want to wear Orange vs ODU and I don't blame them.
What traditions? How is white effect a tradition? It started a few years ago. The number of years of VT football without effect games is much greater than the number of years with effect games. Like all gimmicks it has run its course. They need to be more meaningful or it means nothing. An effect game against Furman is meaningless
Eff it! Why stop there.
Let's make them really earn it. No numbers until they earn them. Also they need to break a paver!!!
/sssss
Make the team run out to the Curb Your Enthusiasm or Benny Hill theme songs
Make them break a cinder block with another team's name spraypainted on it.
If you're going to go weak, go weak.
The first Orange Effect was 2002. The same year Enter Sandman became our entrance song. And I believe the first White Out game was in 2008 against Furman, and we've been doing it annually since, including the 2015 game, also against Furman.
As an aside, that 2008 game we also introduced the throwback set that we ended up wearing for the next 10 years, albeit this game with the pretty sweet throwback helmet
I believe that was 2000
I think white effect is 10 years old. VT football and Enter Sandman are now synonymous with each other for a lot of people, but that only started 20 years ago. We now jump to Enter Sandman in the graduation ceremony in Lane, that's about 4 ish years old. Not all traditions are 100+ years old because they have to start from somewhere
I've stated my side so I'll leave you to your opinion. I've always liked the effect games and hope they continue.
We stopped the Hokie Pokie over the third quarter break for no good reason. Still upset at that.
Have we seen the effect designs yet? Or will those come out this weekend?
I'm wondering about this, too. We're going to the Furman game with a group of Furman fans (yes, they exist!). Somehow, out of all the VT swag my husband has accumulated, the only orange shirt he owns is his "Real Men Marry Engineers" tee.
The white effect in the stands will most likely not look great...
But the all white unis will look awesome under the lights!
I don't have a problem with any of the effect colors. Maroon, orange, or white, it's all good, and most fans probably already have all those colors. If not, great excuse to get a new jersey or the SGA shirt du jour... I usually have enough VT gear to supply any guests we have at the time the appropriate attire, and we suddenly have a few more fans... They've gotten a lot of use over the years.
I suppose we'll find out on 9/27 how good the white looks at night. I like that the fans are alert and committed enough to participate. The "alternating sections" effect at the Notre Dame game last year was really cool looking.

I can't find anywhere official that the Furman game is military appreciation game. If it is, that t-shirt has nothing to do with that, which would be disappointing.
Thought that was usually the White "whatever" game...which would put it on the Duke game.
Unless it's the ODU game.
It's the Orange Effect game. Orange Effect & Military Appreciation – Hokies vs. Furman (9/14)
Thanks for the link! Apparently my google skills this morning suck. Disappointing that nothing in the t-shirt design reflects that.
My question....
why the metallic gold on both?
It's just terrible photos from the Bookstore.
They were in the stores yesterday. It's orange/maroon/white (as always) like in the Athletics promotional graphic.
seriously?
sigh, and we call ourselves a tech school
Yup, not a marketing school.
Hey, be happy you get 256 colors in AutoCad now; or whatever drafting program.
We were all green in CadKey....ugh.
Ah, CadKey - those were the days!
