All hail portal!!!
THE CAKE IS TRUE
Portal giveth, and portal taketh away.
Alright here comes a bit of good news
did NOT see that coming.
That's huge.
The IG post isn't embedding properly, adding Mike Barber's tweet here:
Yeah that is a surprising development to be honest. Makes me like the kid even more
and fuck the NCAA
I hope that lion can be our center.
Lion would probably foul out quickly.
Lets recruit the ghostly figure in the background, that guy is huge!
Hope that doesn't mean he's trolling us and heading to PSU.
or ODU
Upvotes for everyone! 🦃
Nothing sort of huge. He is a solid piece you can build the new path of the program around.
I was totally expecting bad news. Today has been great - keeping Nolley and bringing coach Antwon on board
As much as I love Blackshear, in terms of the future of the program Harris and Nolley are the two most important players we needed to retain.
We got one, and I'm starting to think we have a good shot at keeping the other as well.
Didn't Harris post that he is committed to A&M? Or am I mixing him up with others?
Gordon and Gultekin both committed to A&M along with Cashius McNeilly.
Gordon and Gultekin (sp?) committed along with Cashius McNeilly reclassifiying to 2019 to commit
I mean
Felt like at least two guys in the portal will come back. Based on all the seniors graduating and recruits going with Buzz, some guys have to see the positive as far as playing time and opportunity to be a starter next season. Nolley should be an alpha.
Agreed. Wouldn't KBJ like to play on the court with Landers? This is a good starting point for guys to decide to stay put.

Dope
Quick someone get him an edit before the NCAA sees it.
If anything he needs to add misspellings. We all know the NCAA doesn't like a basketball player who's too smart. It makes it look like they don't go to UNC.
and they might get classified as a
partial qualifier. EDIT...Academic Redshirt.via GIPHY
Major step in the right direction.
But is he free though?
#FreeNolley
Question - do we know for a fact he would be eligible next year? We never really got any resolution about the stupid NCAA's issue with his test score. Would absolutely love to see this guy play
so I've been researching this a bit, and the NCAA term for his status is Academic Redshirt. If he gets decent grades and stays good on VT's academic progression requirements, he will be eligible to play next year. This status replaced Partial Qualifier status a couple of years ago.

By all accounts his grades have been very good since he got here. I'd fully expect to see him take the floor next year for VT.
So we're still a basketball school?
well..that depends on how September through January goes
WE NEVER WEREN'T BABY
PRAISE PORTAL
Also Nolley is cleared to play next year.
big, if true.
Excellent news!
Which Childish Gambino song is this?
E Pluribus Anus
...or is he the guy from Lethal Weapon?
No, that's not Danny Glover. He's to old for this shit.
...dammit, my retirement is tomorrow.
Coach Young's first victory at VT.
Ahem. He has 4 wins under his belt.
Don't forget his coaching staff, which is very good.
That is very good, but it's already been dismissed by some on this board as "part of his job". This win can't be ignored.
Agreed that it's part of his job. But he could've got 3 duds and would've been 0-3 out of the gate.
Recruiting is part of every coaches job, but everyone cheered when Nestor flipped from OSU. That's part of Fuente's and Vance's job, doesnt make it less exciting.
Mission Completed!
Let's make T-shirts
But will he play?
Yes, this
Yes see above comment by me
Source? Because that's great news.
#sauces
Last time I trusted a #sauce on here, we were going to hire Gregg Marshall or Mick Cronin
My #sauce is better than their sauce.
Definitely huge trying to bring in some of these recruits. Jalen Cone's brother and mom liked that post.
Definitely first big recruiting win for CMY
69 comments.... nice
What is that? That warm feeling that things are going to be okay? Is that... hope?

This is a class ACT!!! SCORE!!!
Great news. Now bring back Blackshear, Bede, etc.
I talked to Nolley back in January. Based on that conversation I put him staying at Tech if Buzz left at 0%. He said Buzz was THE reason he was here. So I have to say this is 100% a victory that the new coaching staff deserves at least some credit for.
800% a Victory
Oh shit, we're getting Cam'ron Kelly too??
Ok so who else have you talked to? Cmon we need more good newz
I get to talk to football and basketball players and in a setting where they are comfortable being open and honest, but I don't get to choose who and when unfortunately. When I get the chance I take advantage though.
So you're either a counselor or a bag man?
/sssss
Excellent news. I'm very interested to see how well he does next season
I think this is such a great sign for two reasons.
1) It shows that top end talent can (and does) recognize that Virginia Tech is a viable spot to come and play ACC ball even without the coach that helped get us to the point we are at right now, and
2) It shows that Coach Young clearly has something in his pitch or the way he interacts with said top end talent that convinced Nolley that this is still a place he can thrive and be successful for his long term goals
I personally don't see NAW declaring or KBJ likely moving as any kind of reflection on Young's ability in that regard.

This a huge win. Makes my confidence for the new coach skyrocket. That's recruiting right there.
So, anyone else read that as no other ACC team would/could take him?
I find this hard to believe, but I guess it's possible.
Academic foibles never scared UNC any, so there's that.
As a non-Graduate transfer, he would have been subject to a two year transfer sit if he had wanted to go to another ACC school. That would mean three straight years away from basketball games, so tough sell for everyone involved.
Sitting out a year may have been a huge factor in the decision overall.
However I'll take him staying for a year to be under Young for the opportunity that he doesn't transfer next year. He gets to really know coach and then can make a more educated decision, hoping that he becomes thrilled with what he sees though.
I read that more as a nod to the ACC. It's pretty much the same as a football recruit saying they want to play in the SEC. And let's face it, our basketball program is very much riding the prestige of the conference as say Ole Miss is for football.
Kabongo had announced he's staying, too
Now time for Nolley and Kabongo to get in Blackshear's ear. And Bede while we're at it.
Well first they gotta get in Bede's ear since he is in the transfer portal. But Wilkins and Horne need to get in their ears too since they will be staying
Yeah I meant get in Bede's ear about staying, not Bede getting in Blackshear's ear. I worded that not great.
Not that it matter now, but I must have missed that he was in the portal. I don't recall seeing anything about him possibly leaving
Not if we walk him off like some have suggested /s
But wait, is he gonna get to play next year? Or is he still too smart?
I... I don't understand. I thought the offseason was for bad news. This changes everything I thought I knew.
via GIPHY
You spoke too soon. Our kickoff kicker just entered the portal. Back to your regularly scheduled offseason
Is he Landers "The Lion" Nolley?
Apparently all the elephants drowned trying to make it to Kings' Landing, so lions it is.
I thought they couldn't fit them on the boats?
Cersei would just end up murdering them anyway.
I was gonna say that you're thinking of Joffrey or The Mountain who really like killing animals. But then I remembered S1E2 RIP Lady
After having her way with them, most likely. Why else would she want them?
Hollar at your boy!!!!
I read his second paragraph such that he may have heard Buzz had been planning this for a year and was put off that he was misled. He signed up to play in the ACC.
I can't help but think the NCAA will find another way to hose us.
They'll question his driver's test score, or how he filled out his Kroger rewards application.
Meanwhile, UNC...
It's going to be pretty hard to hose us now. If Nolley did well enough in school to be on the team then the NCAA cant do much. Now Nolley has lost a year of eligibility, but as long as he has the grades in college he should be elligible.
He didn't really lose a year of eligibility . It was more of a forced redshirt. Still has 4 to play 4.
Really did they change the rules to partial qualifiers?
yup.. division 1 now has "Academic Redshirts" instead of partial qualifiers. Functions like a regular redshirt, leaving 4 years of playing eligibility.
The conditions are a bit stringent too, requiring a certain % of core classes be completed before senior year, to cut down on players transferring to basketball academies and magically completing all their needed core classes in 1 year.
The NCAA won't be nearly as worried about us if we are not pre-season ranked. They are much more likely to go after A & M now, at least until MY dances a few times in the O&M.
Hasn't worked out too well in the past. See UNC.
