OT: Gamer's Lounge (May)

Hey all.

We had a pretty damn good conversation a couple months ago about all things video games so I thought I would throw out a new thread.

What's everyone playing these days? What system? Should I start playing Apex Legends? Did anyone else name their horse in Red Dead 2 "Roach"? ARE WE ACTUALLY GOING TO GET A NEW NCAA FOOTBALL GAME SOON?!?!?!?

Any and all gaming conversation is welcome here.

Rage 2 is a good good just to have fun, not a groundbreaking game like God of War but still good to just to have fun.
Just got Mordhau also, class based Medieval combat, have been fun especially with some ragdolls.
Finally finished Persona 5, fuck me that last boss.
Now just waiting on DOOM Eternal and Borderlands 3, also will post something soon about Summer Games Done Quick since it's a little bit early this year being in late June instead of early July.

I'm playing through the Shadow of Mordor/War games now on the PC. The combat in those games is just absolute fun. I will occasionally go to Stardew Valley if I want to mentally unplug for a little bit. Cities: Skyline has a Campus sim DLC coming out later this month that I'll check out. Other than that, I'm just replaying Mass Effect 2 for the gazillionth time.

Edit: I also heavily modded Final Fantasy VII and got it looking wonderful. That's going to eat up a lot of my time.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Apex is good. Honestly I'm still on Fortnite, they are doing a John Wick event right now.

I can't really get into any of the new battle royal games. They just don't capture the tomfukery and chaos of the ArmA2/3 mods.

I enjoy it for the group gaming. Especially if you can get people with a mic who are adults.

Started a new Diablo 2 run yesterday, been at least 10 years. Legendary game.

I started season 17 of diablo 3 last night. Haven't played in 3-4 years.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 and the expansion. Seriously might be the best game on the Switch for my money.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I beat Xenoblade 2 earlier this year and about halfway with the DLC, I like them both though some of the character designs are "questionable" and wasn't expecting that.
The art design is definitely different from the first one since they had multiple artists for the characters.

Yeah you have to be willing to deal with a large amount of anime tropes to enjoy the game. Really the only downside for me.

1. I actually did name one of my horses Roach in RDR2.

2. Playing AC Odyssey tonight I found myself trying to click in the left thumb stick to every time my horse would shake his head.

I'm about finished with the division 2. I still could spend 50 hours wrestling around looking for every little thing, but I'll finish off tidal basin when I get on next and the maybe some hunters and be done.

Been on Apex and FFXIV a ton. Did a PC rebuild last week so my rig is a hoss right now.

Should you play Apex? It comes down to do you like building? If you do, play Fortnite. If you wanna just run and gun, Apex is the ticket.

Destiny 2 and Apex it is for me. For all the things Bungie screws up, I can't put down Destiny to save my life.

Been playing Destiny since D1 beta. I agree. They "screw" things up and don't listen but, I don't know of another console game that has the tight controls and game play that Destiny does. Used to be on the forums a lot as well but, it got old.

PSN: DrNicewater

The gun play is just too damn good to give up. Even in PVE everything just feels so smooth. Got my Recluse this season and it's completely changed crucible and everything else for me. I just can't get past this dread of everything that I love and worked hard for will eventually get the nerf hammer. Xbox is DredgenMoore

After years I finally stopped playing because the gun play is all hand cannons and i just dont like them. But they basically force you to play hand cannons.

Hand cannons were my favorite but I still stopped playing because I kinda hated crucible (even though I didn't suck at it too bad) and the grind to try to get the pinnacle weapons in crucible was torture.

And now apparently they're nerfing those same weapons.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

Yeah Luna's was awful to get. I was going to push for NF but once they announced the nerf, there was no way I was subjecting myself to that.

I'm all scouts most of the time. I do wish that the drops felt special in D1. If they do feel special they get nerfed immediately. I hardly run Crucible anymore. I don't suck. Pretty good K/D. I just get bored with it. I run a lot of Gambit mostly. Used to run a lot of raids but, I have a non active clan. I'm not sure I've even completed any raids in D2.

I find most of the D2 raids lacking compared to D1. I have 26 completions on Last Wish simply because it may be my favorite raid of all time but I have less than 5 completions on all the other D2 raids combined. There's not a lot of engaging, replayable endgame content right now, especially in PVP since Trials is gone which is one of the bigger problems in the game right now.

Man I used to love scouts in D1, but just can't find one I like in D2 so I've been using a lot of pulses. I like Chattering Bone a lot, but really miss my Hung Jury

I use the Conspirator with firefly and Oxygen SR3 with firefly the most. LOVE these scouts. I rarely will use pulse's or hand cannons unless they make something explode haha. Got the Breakneck auto from Gambit and it's pretty legit for an auto. I agree though, some of the raid scouts in D1 were the best ever.

Haha yeah firefly is awesome. RIP VOC :'(

I haven't found a scout that's viable for Crucible but there's plenty I like to plunk with in PVE. I mainly use Outbreak Perfected/Recluse or Bite of the Fox sniper/Luna's if I'm in Comp. I have a Talons of the Eagle Scout with drop mag, outlaw, and rampage that can be pretty fun to use. Are you guys as pumped up as I am for Season of Opulence? Seems like they took the best parts of Black Armory and are incorporating it into this season so we can grind for the gear we want directly.

Oh man... My Hung Jury with the perfect roll.

... Had so much fun with baby.

I just feel like D2 is hand cannons all the time. The scouts aren't as good as D1 (which i always ran with scouts), the pulses are okay, the autos range from good to unusable depending on what patch you are playing. Maybe someday Destiny will have good weapons again.

Gotta change it up every now and then. I ran a Sunshot and then a Sweet Business in PVP this weekend and it was some of the most fun I've had in a long time. Hand cannons are doodoo on console outside of the 180's on console because of how bad the bloom is.

I'm completely with you on this. I kind of lurk on the forums just every now and then for updates.

That game didn't just die .it got assassinated. Huge blemish on 'games as a service', roadmaps, preorders, and bullshit E3 promos. So glad I was able to convince myself to stay away from this one.

Back to sports games for me for a little. While playing FIFA and NHL 14 I figured it was time for an update so I got 19 for both. I forgot how much fun I used to have in NHL.

I hope they start making NHL games on the Switch. I don't have the patience to play sports games on a stationary system but I have had some enjoyment with Fifa on the Switch. Being able to press the on button and play for 10 minutes here or there makes it much more appealing.

VT Class of '12 (MSE), MVBone, Go Hokies!

I really wish I could justify buying a switch. I have a big enough backlog of games on my laptop, and a PS4 that's collecting dust, that I can't in good conscience buy a system that would just be sitting on a shelf for significant amounts of time.

Pokemon Sword and Shield this year

It's Time to go to Work

I mean, I'd be into Mario Kart right now. I like Smash, but just picked up MK11, so I'd probably play that as my main fighter. I haven't played the Pokemon games since like Gameboy Color, so the OG ones (Blue, Red, and Yellow). I'd love it for travelling, but even for our mini getaway most summer weekends, I just play NBA Jam on my phone in the car most of the time. (I also realize that I'm literally defining first world problems via video games)

Currently looking for a good switch game that I can play sans internet if anyone has any suggestions. I've played BotW, smash, and Mario kart.

If you haven't already played Stardew Valley on another platform, holy shit it is a ton of fun for a farming simulator. Cuphead if you feel like screaming at the TV and hating life. Mario & Rabbids Kingdom Battle if you want to play X-Com without aliens. Fire Emblem is coming out at the end of July and has been one of my favorite turn based strategy franchises for decades. Heard great things about Octopath Traveler but haven't researched it too much personally. Mutant Year Zero Road to Eden was another X-Com ish game that was a surprise hit. Darkest Dungeon if you feel like watching your pawns go insane while hoarding treasure for you. I don't think For The King meets the offline criteria but it kicked up some dust a few months back. This War of Mine if you want to cry yourself to sleep because you had to steal food from an old couple to survive a wartorn Baltic state. Dead Cells is an awesome little rogue lite that has you run around and master endless levels.

And that was ten pages of Best Buy Switch games I recognized. If anything sounds interesting or you want specific genre recommendations, let me know. I spend entirely too much time gaming.

If you don't mind lengthy RPGs here are some I played/currently playing on the Switch.

FF XII: Zodiac Age: Remaster of a PS2 game that is still really good and doesn't feel dated (maybe for graphics but still looks gorgeous), currently playing right now because never had a chance to complete it when I was younger. Just started a week ago getting back to the combat system (really good BTW) and the changes to the licensing system is a great quality of life change. Top 3 FF game for me.

Octopath Traveler: Back to old school Turn Base RPG and sprites with a gorgeous world and setting. Picking to start one of the eight characters allows for a different experience in each playthrough beginning. Nearing the full ending of the game but highly recommend.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 (adding Torna DLC since the DLC is a prequel and adds some interesting lore): Just need to get past the change of art direction between Xenoblade 1 and 2 (and some anime fan service) for an enjoyable RPG with a very intriguing combat system. Finished the base game and in the middle of the DLC. Good game where I enjoyed beginning to end.

Looks like FF XII has a Dragon Age: Origins style combat system. Maybe not widely loved, but one of my personal favorites.

For some reason I'm playing through KHIII for a second time on critical. Biggest disappointment I've ever played yet I still have to go through and beat it on critical πŸ™„

Once I figured that I was forcing myself to play through in hopes that it would get better, I stopped playing. Not too long after the Toy Box.

I cannot stop playing Rocket League. I got it after quite a bit of persuasion from a few friends and it's addicting.

Another white bronco? The first one didn't go too far.

I go through a cycle of playing that game nonstop for two weeks, then deleting it for a month because I get pissed off at it. So addicting though.

I got Xbox game pass a few months ago so I've been bouncing around various games.

Still haven't finished RDR2 - fantastic game, I just get burnt out on huge open world games. Same thing happened with Ghost Recon: Wildlands.

Recently finished a play through of Crackdown 3, Banko-Kazooie, Sniper Elite 4. Still working on a franchise in NHL19, Metro 2033 Redux, Deus Ex: Mankind. And I have Just Cause 4, Ryse: Son of Rome, and Shadow of the Tomb Raider next on my list.

I splurged a little and got a flight stick for the XBOne and I've been playing through Ace Combat 6 again. Totally different experience than using the controller.

Still in the early learning curve.

Feels a lot like MOO3 right now - loads of detail (aka overwhelming options), poor "governor" AI (you probably need to get into those infinite details and micromanage to succeed in the higher difficulty settings), and a UI that's not entirely intuitive (because they're trying to squeeze in all this data and all these options). Periods where you just sit and wait for an event to trigger.

You ain't wrong chief. Game always shined when I had a session to play with friends. The shenanigans, confederacies, surprise wars, and all kinds of shit was great.

I've mostly been playing through my backlog of games on the Switch recently. I'm very close to 100% completion on Stardew Valley (120 hours in on this save). I picked up Celeste and Dead Cells during recent sales. Both are awesome indies. I've also been playing Smash and Tetris 99 in short bursts. The only attention my PC has gotten is when I play Rocket League or Factorio with friends.

I'm very excited for Nintendo's upcoming releases. Super Mario Maker 2 next month and Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, and Pokemon Sword & Shield all by the end of 2019. Link's Awakening also looks really good. My wallet is gonna be hurting here soon.

While I love Classic as a concept, I could never do it. I'm still fairly hardcore as a player but the grind required in that game in vanilla state was absurd. Watching streamers like Amsongold, Sodapoppin, and a few others put in like 5 days just to scrape level 30 as they are power leveling is absurd.

Rocket League has ruined gaming for me.

No matter what game RDR2, Apex, Borderlands, whatever. Every time I play those for a week but never have time to actually play them so I put on RL for two matches which takes 15 minutes turn the console off. Then when I want to play something and have time I'm still hooked on RL.

This is what's so great about the Switch for me. I can flip on the handheld, play for a few minutes while on the pooper, and flip it right back to sleep and go on about my day.

Using /s is for cowards.

The most underrated part of the Switch. People don't talk about it as much as I feel like I do. You can hit the sleep button in the middle of a boss fight and when you hit the button again the next day, it starts right there, no delays, no startup... just play. It's been a HUGE boon to me when it comes to JRPGs and sports games, as I said above.

I've been making my way through Shadow of the Tomb Raider. They put a heavy emphasis on exploration, story, and puzzle solving in this one, which I absolutely love. Combat is so-so but I don't mind. Highly recommend.

That's next on my list to knock out. Loved the first 2 of the reboot

I got Far Cry 5 on sale on the Xbox Marketplace, that game was awesome...I didn't love the ending but the game as a whole was really fantastic.

Started playing Road to the Show as a pitcher on MLB The Show 19. Got drafted by the Royals and decided I wanted to have at least some at bats. I figured if I demanded a trade, I'd have more than a 50% of being traded to an NL team and get a few at bats.

Got traded from the first place Royals to the last place Orioles.

I've been continuing my RTTS from The Show 17 where for some reason I changed a setting to where I only get fastballs in the strike zone, soooooooo over my 8 year career I have 732 homeruns and I can't figure out how to change it. Is 19 worth the money?

I can't really answer that because this is the first Playstation I've owned and the last MLB The Show game I played was my college roommate's and it was from like 2007.

But for me, it was.

Currently between three games: Destiny 2, Division 2, and Days Gone on the PS4.

Can't wait until E3 (though no Sony conference there will probably be an extended video they stream from somewhere around that time). I love the news of Borderlands 3, but not sure I'm as amped about it as I've been for other games in the series for some reason.

I can only focus on one game at a time and right now it's Division 2. Typical open map shooter game and the story is "meh" but I'm impressed with the amount of detail they put into the map. It's about as close as you can virtually get to walking around DC.

After living in DC for four years, I often find myself wondering around the map just because it feels like I'm in the city again. (granted, in a post-apocalyptic environment)

I'm just hating the RNG right now. Still waiting on a D50 for my Liberty pistol.

Up until around gear level 450ish I've really enjoyed it. The end end game is just not holding my interests.

Also I hate games with lots of story. I play video games to do something not to watch something, I'm happy to just start shooting. So the lack of story is a huge plus.

Mordhau gets a 10/10 because you can play a lute, actually 20/10 because you can download MIDIs of songs and have a script to play them on a lute.

I play Factorio. Its kind of a combination of Minecraft and a Tycoon game. If you are an engineer or programmer, you will probably really like it.

I am really getting into the Switch and have realized I've been playing it a lot more than the others. The portability is a huge advantage that I didn't realize I needed/wanted, and being able to plug it right into a TV when on the go is... well, its pretty revolutionary to be honest.

Trying to find a few great games for it. I see that it has NBA 2k and FIFA. Are they worth the price?

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

Breath of the Wild is a MUST. One of the greatest games of all time easily. I like the Switch for the indie stuff too. Diablo III is really cool to take on the go as well.

Diablo3 seems like a great game for 5-10 minutes of free time, playing season 17 I got into adventure mode hit a quest up and am done shortly. Greater rifts are max 15 minutes so not bad if you have a little bit of time.

I have a feeling that in addition to FFII (American 2 if you weren't paying attention in the classic games thread), Kingdom Hearts will be making an appearance in la casa de Enginerd/Lancer... Mini LancerHokie(our daughter) saw it on the shelf this week and asked HokieEnginerd about it. She seemed very interested in the game and will probably be playing after school gets out.

FF6 makes its way onto my TV every few years. So much better as an adult when I understand what characters have the real power in the game (mimic and setzer)

I picked up Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice just over a week ago and love it. The game is pretty freakin hard, but so much fun. Anyone else give this game a try?

Anybody see that long ass release-date reveal trailer for Death Stranding?

Still no idea what the story is about... Other than some link to the past? Militaristic subhuman demons? I dunno

Seems like a game with a heavy emphasis on stealth, crafting, survival, and story.

I get the feeling that it's going to be a political story that's complicated and convoluted.

... I'd embed the video but I'm on mobile and it just seems like a huge pain in the dick to figure out right now, if I'm being honest.

I have no idea what Death Stranding is about but it looks like the most original game I have seen in a while and that alone has my interest in it. The cast they have for the game is well-known name heavy too so that is a plus. I won't preorder it because I refuse to preorder any game but I am looking at this game closely.

It's definitely original. Can't deny that. I just haven't seen enough to spark my interest.

Just saw the trailer for the new COD Modern Warfare. Looks like they're going back to reality and back to InfinityWard. If this game can get away from the fucking jetpacks and other random perks and multiplayer maps like Overgrown I'd have to get it

I hated ghosts, BO3, AW, and IW..... but WW2 and BO4 were very fun. Looking forward to the new one

Recruit Prosim

I haven't liked any of them since MW2. To be fair I gave up on them entirely after BO2

Posted this in the other thread, but a remastered version of the 2009 Ghostbusters game (the one where Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Harold Ramis, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, and William Atherton reprised their roles as voice actors) is set to be released for the PS4, XBONE, Switch, and PC (through Epic) later this year.

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

Is anyone playing Dauntless on XBox, PS4, or PC? The game now has cross platform play

Kind of a poor mans co-op Monster Hunter, but I am hooked. Easy to jump in for 5-10 minutes to kill a behemoth and upgrade gear

Look me up as AZHokie22 if you ever want to group up

I am a bit late on the game, but I finally beat Run for It in SuperStar Road on New Super Mario Bros U on the Switch last night. Good. Grief. Was I pissed off when I finally beat it. And the worst part is I am not done, I still have to go back through and get the star coins.... CURSE MY INNER COMPETIONIST!!!!

Tech time, looking for some lighting for behind the TV but was wondering if they have any smart lighting for Roku tvs or for consoles for back lighting. Saw the Phillips hue stuff but that's only for PC

Directions from Blacksburg to whoville, go north till you smell it then go east until you step in it

You want the lighting that corresponds to what's being shown on screen?

I just saw this pop up on my IG and I've never wanted anything to be a real thing as much as I've wanted this.

I found TKP after two rails from TOTS then walking back to my apartment and re-watching the 2012 Sugar Bowl. I woke up the next day with this username.

Any possibilities of getting a June thread started for this? E3 starts soon and it would be cool to have a place to compile and talk about all the big reveals.

Yeah, I can throw one up.
