It appears the Hokies are the ACC team chosen to skip this years' ACC/BIG10 Challenge (15 ACC teams v. 14 B10).
UPDATE:
Mike Barber reports VT volunteered to be left out
#UVA gets an Elite Eight rematch with Purdue in the ACC/Big Ten challenge. The #Hokies volunteered to be left out of this year's event, a school spokesman said. https://t.co/A8aZT5tmsp— Mike Barber (@RTD_MikeBarber) June 6, 2019

Well now we can schedule somebody good instead of Penn State for the nteenth time
beating michigan certainly helped us.
I doubt we'd get somebody good
we usually dont ill admit. but weve gotten a really good purdue team that had jujuan johnson and etwan moore and then michigan, even if we only get a good draw once every few years i think its worth it. they usually have a good # of teams make the tourney and it helps to have beat 1 of them come the end of the season.
At least we're going to Maui.
I wonder if going to Maui and not participating in the ACC-B1G challenge are related?
It probably had more to do with the league expecting us to be hot garbage.
Nope. 2003 was the last time that Maui didn't include a team *from the ACC that also played in the ACC/Big10
That's kinda bullshit. I thought the last-place team was supposed to be excluded. We were near the top of the league last year. Why are we left out? Did Whit or CMY request that because of the expected rebuilding year?
Looks like VT volunteered to skip this year, per Mike Barber (updated OP)
I really don't have a problem with this.
We're in rebuild phase and surely won't have a competitive team by then. We'll be fine.
That update probably warrants a title change.
Seems legit, going to be rebuilding for a few years in the new coaches image so no need to be embarrassed on national tv...
Anyone else worried this is going to hurt recruiting? 5 stars aren't going to sign with VT if we're not playing in the ACC/B1G challenge, especially if we're the ones ducking it! Sorry but after seeing this and if Blackshear doesn't come back, I think it might be time to end the CMY experiment.

It certainly isnt a good look regardless of where we are in transition or competitiveness. To purposely opt out of a single quality OOC game that if we are going to be competitive this year we certainly would have it close to together by whats normally the 8th or 9th game of the season. That said, its done, so now its on CMY and staff to find another quality matchup to fill that hole in the schedule. It more then likely also would have been a home game this year since we were on the road last time, so if we get a quality opponent to fill the slot it more likely will be a neutral site game rather then at home, which effects how the team plays dramatically.
we're playing in Maui and our roster situation is such that several freshmen are going to get a ton of minutes. I don't see the need for another high-major OOC team on the schedule.
Doesn't change that there's no reason to opt out of the game
Yes there is. We'll be left out eventually. Why not opt out this season when we're expected to be down, and then get it out of the way and maybe build some good will with future selections.
Sounds like every team is supposed to opt out or be excluded at one time or another based on the # of teams in the conference, but I doubt that rule applies to the higher end teams like UNC, Duke or UVA. If we're going to opt out, this is probably the season to do it. I don't think one game is going to make or break our recruiting, either, unless it's a tournament (ACC, NCAA) or rivalry (UVA) game.
I agree I'd rather we play but odds are we would have gotten a bottom of the barrel big 10 team, so I don't think it'll affect our noncom SOS. At home against a bad big 10 team is probably a Q3 game.
I thought they based the matchup based on the last years season. In which case we would have been playing a top half B10 team.
I thought I read that ND took our spot @Maryland. I don't think we would have turned it down if it was a home game against a P5 opponent since those are pretty rare and could help our early season attendance.
