Boom!
Will reclass to 2019, great news!
How do we feel about this kid?
Solid, with a chance to be better. He's a 3 star guard that's played pretty well against good competition in the traveling circuits. 6'4 guard that can play both spots but is more of secondary guard. Shoots very well from outside.
He committed to VT, so he's a future All-American. That's how we feel about him. If he decommits later, he was overrated.
arvin says he would have been a 4 star kid in 2020 ill take it
Sounds like a Hokie
For a point of reference:
Jamon Gordon: 1380 points
Justin Robinson: 1383 points
Deron Washington: 1408 points
Justin Bibbs: 1457 points
Ahmed Hill: 1473 points
Erick Green: 1742 points
Zabian Dowdell: 1785 points
A.D. Vassallo: 1822 points
Malcolm Delaney: 2255 points
Damn, Malcolm Delaney was a beast.
Damn, Malcolm Delaney is a beast! FTFY
Point of reference for the older guys:
Del Curry: 2389
Ace Custis: 1706
Wally Lancaster: 1696
Bobby Beecher: 1548
Shawn Smith: 1440
Damon Watlington: 1224
...and Bimbo Coles had 2484.
And Dell's totals were WITHOUT three pointers. If they "re-calculated" his points based on the shots he already took, I 'll bet you would add several hundred more points. Then if you figure that (with a three point line in place) he would have likely TAKEN more shots from outside, 3000 points wouldn't have been out of reach!
Saw all those guys play, including Bimbo, but had forgotten Smitty. Don't know how, he was one of our favorites. Thanks for the reminder.
Wha' the hell?
Drinks like a fish................
Oh......you know me?
watlington plays in my slowbreak league dude can put up 40 anytime he wants.
D-Wat was also one of our faves. Hell, they all were. We used to really love VT basketball in those days.
We had a guy who showed up occasionally on our softball team named Quinton Nottingham who played VT basketball back in the day. Twice, we were an outfielder short, and Quinton played left and center field. Nothing got by him. Nothing. We also had a couple of other former VT football players who'd occasionally show up like Sidney Snell and once Donald Wayne Snell (auto homers from them both) and a former football star, Mike Giaccalone who played regularly. Unreal the difference between decent players and "real" athletes, despite their sport of note.
My roommate played on an intramural softball team with Bobby Beecher (nothing like a 6 ft 9 second baseman) and Bimbo Coles.(shortstop). Almost every hit by Bimbo was a double 'cause he would round first at full speed on a routine single and be halfway to second by the time the outfielder fielded the ball! Also their pitcher(whose name escapes me-sorry) would throw his first pitch with about a 10 foot arc. If that landed on the mat for a strike, the next pitch was either a 20 foot arc OR a knuckleball that you could swing at and miss three times before it hit. That team was a beast! For those who remember the Prairie Quad BEFORE they added three dorms next to the gym-they would practice with home plate being at the corner of the Prairie near War Memorial Gym and I saw multiple hits that bounced on the basketball court in front of Lee Hall!
Sounds like a character from jersey shore.
During the Dooley era, he was the all time leading VT receiver. During the Dooley era when a pass was still a VT rarity given Dooley's 3 yards and a cloud of dust offense. Mike hit some bumps in his road after VT, but was a solid contributor to VT football, and the best all round athlete I personally have had the pleasure to know socially. Of course, it would be impossible to forget him for me anyway. My left shoulder has been screwed up royally since a collision with him in the 90s after a pop up down the third base line, him being 3rd, me being catcher. He was my size, but when we collided, I felt like I'd been hit by a brick wall moving my way at 50 mph.
i played high school ball for Shawn Good he used to show us tape and tell some stories about the NIT championship team. It was cool being a fan and hearing all that
That was a fun team to watch. Goody was a great guy to talk to and like so many of the players from those years, hold a special place in the hearts of we here in the fish house who were fortunate to enjoy those years in the Cassell.
Much happy! Many rejoice.

So based on a combination of prior play, recruiting rankings (Alleyne rated 88 by 247) & assuming Cone is a starter, best case (KBJ comes back, Aluma gets waiver):
Starters: Cone, Bede, Nolley, Aluma, KBJ
Bench: Alleyne, Bongo, Wilkins, Horne, Johnson
Redshirt: Cattoor
Walk-Ons: Radford, Palmer
Two scholarships left. In this scenario, would ideally love to see us snag two grad transfers: a 6'6"+ combo forward and another point guard so we could play Bede exclusively off ball. Would allow us to redshirt both Alleyne and Cattoor.
Aluma would have to sit a year pending hardship waiver, dunno if he has applied for one though.
Can't he get one since his coach left?
No, you're misunderstanding. The hardship only applies when you have to follow your coach to a new school.
No no no, the hardship only applies when you are a QB and going to a blueblood institution.
Seems unlikely that Alleyne is going to redshirt after reclassifying to 2019.
Or that we would have the option of redshirting anyone with 9 eligible scholarship players on the roster.
I mean if KBJ comes back and Aluma gets a waiver, we'll have 11. If Drew Harris comes and Lawson doesn't transfer, we'll have 13.
likely that Cattoor won't redshirt; he isn't going to get any quicker or taller and is the best pure shooter on the roster. Cattoor, Kabongo, and Alleyne will probably be competing for minutes as the 4th, 5th, and 6th guards behind Cone, Bede, and Wilkins.
I think they'll add Ojiako. Hopefully they'll get KJ and/or Jones as well.
Based on recruiting valuation alone, Cattoor projects as a non-rotation player as a freshman. In the admittedly far-fetched best case scenario, we already have six guards ahead of him or seven if we land another grad transfer. I don't see the point of wasting a year of eligibility.
We'll see. Wilkins got 14 minutes per game last year. I think Cattoor is the same type of player and is more advanced coming out of HS.
Redshirt or not, I'm confident both of us want him to play well.
(fyi you fixed one Allen to Alleyne but not the other two Allens to Alleynes)
edit: now you fixed all the Allens but made them Allenyes and not Alleynes
Radford is now on scholarship. Understand that leaves one for KBJ or an open spot if he doesn't return.
Great article, on 247. Seems like a prototypical "3 and D". They said he was planning on taking a prep year and would have been a 4 star after prep school:
looks like we picked up Ojiako, too:
