Virginia Tech has released a series of videos featuring Hokies who have worn the No. 1. That jersey, a highly coveted number, is currently unclaimed. I don't think it will be that way for long.

King?
Tayvion might fit. Or a special award like 25 for the best epitome of "one team".
Fuente will wear it this season, to reaffirm that he is in charge and this is his team. /s
I could see King, Robinson, or maybe Payoute getting it.
Bud will wear it, because he is number one. And, really, who would dare take it from him??
Big Play Tre??
Michigan did it already!
But we should do it too.
My guess is they're giving #1 to a senior to wear the whole season. There is only one option this year: Reggie Floyd.
That's a good thought too. When everyone was thinking freshman you were thinking senior.
Either him or nobody wears it. No switching each week; the 25 is enough.
Legged and disagree!
The number 1 should be purely merit based. We should use it to tell the other team that this is the guy that's gonna give it to ya
Do they allow Roman numerals on jerseys? Cuz word the street is that X gonna give it to ya.
Needed this reply in my life.

A Roman soldier walks into a bar with his 4 buddies after a long shift, holds up two fingers and says "five beers please."
I'll be here all season.
Yeah but we've retired the number 10.
Wish I could give this X legs!
And look damn good, too
*whole 'hood of dogs starts barking*
We signed X to tha Z?
Some connection to The Man. Bud tribute?
I'm thinking long snapper, 1 is a slimming number.
EDIT: I guess no one is interested in a Slim Shadley? The real slim shadley if you must.
Reggie Floyd will wear #1 as the senior leader of the defense this year. Check out his new Instagram handle @st1ckkup. Been coming for about a month now—great new tradition.
Will it just be Floyd? Or will an offensive player also wear 1? Because two players can have the same number as long as they aren't both on offense or both on defense.
No one on offense is deserving of it at a skill position, except for maybe Dalton Keene.
There's a guy whose nickname is literally "big play."
He's doubled down on the #1 already.
Been promised to Grimes
tony pls
Meanwhile in Charlottesville, nobody rolled around on the ground well enough to earn the number 1 this year.
I'd say No. 4 (Eddie Royal, David Wilson, DeAngelo Hall) is the prime VT number, and No. 7 (Michael Vick, Bucky Hodges, Sean Glennon, Kevin Jones as a freshman) is 2nd behind that.
No. 25 (Kevin Jones So/Jr years, Frank Beamer) is honorable mention. And don't forget Eric Green in the No. 1 club.
Interesting that you include Glennon with the 7s. It's not that much of a stretch. He was the 2007 ACCCG MVP and was the starter for the 2008 win over ranked Maryland. With that being said, the only time in his career where fans weren't calling for either Ike Whitaker or Tyrod Taylor to replace him was at the end of the 2007 season when he was actually rotating with Tyrod. 2006 and 2007 weren't completely his fault given how that offensive line couldn't pass block, and 2008 certainly wasn't his fault when his receiving corps consisted of three freshmen and previously mentioned Whitaker, but I'm not entirely sure he belongs in the same discussion as Bucky, MV7, and KJ given their abilities. Maybe if he had a decent offensive line all three seasons and experienced receivers in 2008.
Also, I'm glad you mentioned Green. I love the attitude and swagger he played with. If there was a pile, he hopped on. If there was a turnover, he was blocking (or asking Vinnie Fuller to pitch it). He had some awesome tackles in that 2004 USC game, namely the one where he picked up Reggie Bush by the legs and threw him down.
Going to be that nitpicky asshole here, but KJ wore 7 his first 2 years and changed it up his junior year to 25 I believe to honor an old coach's son... I was always impressed with his performance wearing the 7 jersey following the legend that needs not to be named, but he was truly phenomenal wearing 25.
I actually appreciate the correction. I'm a big fan of getting the facts right.
KJ was great his whole career, but you're right, his junior season he was on another level.
Maybe #1 is not worn by any player as a symbol that the team is #1?
But then what do you do with the #1 jersey? Hang it on the sidelines with TEAM in the name space? I don't know.
I guess it's hard for the absence of something to be a powerful symbol.
I saw Jovonn Quillen campaigning for it on his Instagram page a little while back. If I were Floyd, I'd keep 21 because when it comes to a DB number, we all know it doesn't get any better than that.
Ryan Hash agrees
#28 forever and always

Obviously going to the Aussie Punter, next question
I thought it was because we had like, 1 week till BC.
I agreed when they were posting stuff on saturday and we were exactly a week out but continuing it into sunday made me question that as the reason
Team-only vote on who gets #1.
Ryan Willis is #1 in Ryan Willis' heart.
By exploiting a little known loophole, we'll give everyone on the team the #1 to confuse the other team and give us an edge going into every game.
And if the mental image of a 300+ pound lineman wearing the 1 on his back doesn't excite you at least a little bit then I really can't help you.
Oh cmon!!!
😂😂
May not be a popular opinion, but we have the 25 jersey, we don't need another honorary jersey. Just put a C on the captains chest or something.
I agree, I really hoped all the posts were just a 1 week/Game 1 thing. I'm just so 'meh' on this. However--is it confirmed they're still awarding the weekly 25, or is this replacing that? Are any Beamer players left?
Not replacing 25 is weekly. 1 is for entire season voted by players.
Duly noted.
I'll get behind what the players want though
The 25 is more special teams though right? This is more general? Idk. Also guessing the 25 is a coach picked thing where this 1 is picked solely by the players.
Yes, 25 is exclusively for players that participate on special teams. Also, not only is the #1 jersey selected by the players, but it's also for the entire season, to show respect for the leader of the team.
So we don't want to do what players want? That's how you lose a locker room isn't it?
I'm reading this as the coaches decided that the number 1 should be awarded but the players get to pick who it goes to with no coach input.
Watch the video. They say players asked.
I stand corrected
Not really, no.
Edit: misunderstood fireman's post but leaving the comment for context
Players ask for this coach says no and you don't think that would impact player coach relationship?
I read your comment as fans not wanting what the players want would have a bearing on the locker room.
I mean if turkey bacon could cause the empire to crack, anything goes
Its Floyd
From the article:
At first I was worried about "another jersey gimmick" but considering the past season, this seems like a great way to instill togetherness and reward character
It's literally the team saying "this is our guy." It's a great thing to push leaders as well, make them work hard and set the examples for the young guys. I love it Maggle.
Legged for the JBL to Michael Cole reference alone.
A fitting honor for The Hero of Pittsburg™!

I LOVE this! We keep talking about what has changed since the "Glory Days" of tech football in the late 90s and early 00s, its the leadership. All of our favorite teams had a guy that was the heartbeat of the team and set the tone. Darryl Tapp, Cody Grimm, Danny Coale, Corey Moore, etc. They would go out and make a play when they were needed. That wasnt there last year (arguably for a few years). Letting the team do something special to recognise that guy is going to help bring that back.
I am also really glad Reggie is getting it. He had a rough year last year but he is also has the abillity to turn an entire game around with his effort (see Pitt 2 years ago). I expect big things from him this year.
Sam Rogers on line one...

You're right he definitely belongs on that list. We also finished 10-4 his senior year and nearly won the ACC Championship. We didnt have that type of leader the last 2 years and it showed.
https://247sports.com/college/virginia-tech/Article/Reggie-Floyd-Virgini...
Floyd got it...do Keion Carpenter type of things
As a side note, I really hope the game uniforms aren't going to say "Team" where the name should go.
After last year, could be worse...
Honestly and personally, I don't want it. But they know the dynamic of the locker room and the team. If that's what it takes, so be it.
Chills.
I personally always considered #4 to be a more prestigious number here than #1
I dont think it is about who wore it in the past. I think it represents the person that is first in line to lead the team on the field and in the locker room. Players picking who leads them is a new tradition to help move them forward from the past. The marketing and promotion chose to look back but I doubt the team is.
Agreed, always thought #4 was special.
So, this means when Fuente calls me out of the stands it's to run a wheel route for 6?
