Scott Van Pelt Hammers the NCAA

Van Pelt used his ESPN platform to scrutinize an inane and irrational NCAA decision.

"Look, I understand every case is unique. I don't know why some transfers get approved and this one didn't.

"Maybe the NCAA could explain it in a way that might make some sense to me.

"Nope."

If it wasn't for them having a ton of big sporting events, I would've cancelled a long time ago. Their content is absolute trash these days with the exception of SVP

WOW, I didn't have beef with the NCAA... until now.

Is it basketball season yet?

@CraigThompsonVT

I always liked SVP, but I'm an even bigger fan now. About time someone with a high profile media position criticized the crooked politics of the NCAA, and this decision for Hoffman is a prime example of it. It might not change things in the short-term, but let's hope exposing their messed up decisions now will provide some transparency for these decisions in the future.

When is Tech's AD and President going to grow some balls and publicly call the NCAA out on this??

This is my question also. It's almost like the entire administration doesn't care enough to stand up and be heard. Too polite? Don't want to rock the boat?

I don't necessarily believe they don't care, minor hyperbole on my part, perhaps it's more of an ineptitude situation? I don't know...

His interests is to keep VT in compliance for all sports and going to war with the NCAA over a single player is stupid at best and probably negligent at worst.

Standing up for what is right is NEVER a bad thing.

Sounds good in theory, but not in reality.

I don't agree with the NCAA on Brock, but Whit has to take care of the AD and not the best interests of Brock unfortunately.

Going "scorched earth" IS sometimes a bad thing, even if you're right.

Whit's got a lot of sense. I trust him to navigate this correctly with the best interests of the team in mind.

I like that this is getting media, but I'll be very surprised if the NCAA changes their mind, and if that's not the goal, this can just become a distraction. I look forward to Brock playing, but it may be in 2020 and 2021.

Also, we don't know what they might be doing behind the scenes.

Ut Prosim Ad Dei Gloriam

I don't think Whit risks keeping VT in compliance by speaking out against the NCAA. Obviously they cant just play him and risk losing bowl eligibilty but I see nothing wrong with a strong statement. I know that the national media picked up this story but it needs to come from VT too.

I think there's an insinuation that if VT stirs the pot now, the NCAA could come back and target us at later date, giving us a bowl ban because some kid off got too much cream cheese on his bagel.

Twitter me

I'm not a lawyer so I wouldn't know, but sounds like a cautious, reasonable approach. No need to poke this bear in public no matter how much you disagree with it. Work it in other channels.

I think the NCAA is too incompetent to be vindictive.

They prove that those two traits aren't mutually exclusive.

That's my thought too. As much as we Hokies like to think we do everything on the up and up, I'm guessing we probably still do some things that aren't 100% in line with the NCAA. Its clear the NCAA won't apply the rules fairly to everyone, (see UNC vs Mizzou) but with Brock's situation you can at least get the media and public opinion on your side. That may not be the case with whatever else the NCAA could potentially dig up on us if they decide to seek some revenge. Simply put VT doesn't have the clout to take on the NCAA on its own.

The administration can voice their displeasure with the decision and the way it was handled without going to war with the NCAA. Change will not occur without voicing concern about the process.

without going to war with the NCAA.

There's a difference between handling it effectively to get change in the future vs. voicing displeasure publicly just to get the ppl frothing at the mouth feel good about it.

There's enough traction / bad views on the NCAA without the VT AD having to get into the fray. Whit will not (and should not) stir this put publicly. We the public do this enough and having him speak out will not change this one iota. I would hope there are some other avenues he's exploring to help Brock, but even if he's not it's not his job to do so.

Like I said in another thread, Whit is NOT a public rant type guy. He gets things done, but in a professional manner. Ranting in public is not going to help the situation. Others are taking up the fight (see SVP, Kelly) and can do a lot while being vocal, but Whit blasting off is not going to help VT in any manner. Moreso, it's not going to help Brock.

I agree - Whit should be working the back room, shaking hands and making deals with people in power, while feeding the story to the media.

Twitter me

Anyone considered Whit/VT administration could be the ones feeding and pushing ESPN (SVP/Golic and Wingo) to cover this. It keeps their name out of it while still bringing it to light.

I am disappointed that we have not had any kind of official statement about this outside of a canned "he's ineligible", let alone one that is calling out the NCAA.

In reality, I would absolutely love it if Fuente went scorched Earth in an impromptu press conference today. This is his opportunity to get our name out there and to show not just our own players, but every recruit in the country that he has their back to the day they die. Right now, due to the rumors swirling and the jilted lovers talking, our reputation in that regard has taken a hit, and what better way than to very publicly go to bat for his own player in a case like this?

People mocked Gundy for his "I'm 40, I'm a man" rant so many years ago. But that resonated with players and parents. And that program has reaped the rewards from it. This is Fuente's opportunity to do the same.

If the public opinion is true, and NCAA is vindictive as we think, why would administration want to publicly shame them ourselves. The media is doing that. VT needs to stay polite and professional behind closed doors.

The first rule of Fight Club is we don't talk about turkey leg votes

Fuente's reaction would draw more media attention. The media is going to go on its constant rotation and this story will be thrown out after Saturday, the NCAA is counting on that. Fuente freaking out extends it.

(add if applicable) /s

Most people have pegged this as an extremely important season for Fuente and his future at Virginia Tech. I think it makes sense if Fuente prefers to stay focused on the season opener in 2 days, which is a conference road game, rather than going on a media rampage against the NCAA.

Joffrey, Cersei, Ilyn Payne, the Hound, Jeff Jagodzinski, Paul Johnson, Pat Narduzzi.

And I don't disagree with that one bit. His post game presser would be a great time to bring it up though. It doesn't take much a one sentence jab at the NCAA will make waves.

(add if applicable) /s

Its not about piling on.

Its about sending the message that our coaching staff, and namely our head coach, is willing to publicly defend our own players when injustices have happened. Its about sending the message to all our current players, our current and future recruits, and the families of all of them that Virginia Tech will be vocal and public in defense of you.

Screw the closed doors. This is a great opportunity to reset the current narrative about our program and namely, the way the coaches are running it. Internalizing it all and staying silent probably isn't the best decision right now.

King Alum of the House Hokie, the First of His Name, Khal of the Turkey Legs, The rightful Heir to the Big Board, the Unbanned, Breaker of Trolls and Father of Gritty

Totally agree. Everything doesn't have to be so binary - Whit can make a statement, even a strongly worded statement, that isn't going full Brian Kelly. The NCAA isn't going to hold VT in some sort of contempt for our leadership voicing their displeasure in a forest of other (loud) voices. More importantly, it shows he's ready and willing to go to bat for his employees, staff, and players.

To act like he's doing all he can and should by remaining silent is infuriating to me. Being a leader is picking your spots, few are more obvious than this one. Sitting on the sideline, being passive, and just hoping everything works out probably aided in putting us in this position.

Because this worked out so well for Seth Greenberg.... /S

We aren't a big dog in the NCAA's eyes so we are not going to get favorable treatment. Anything we do to rock the boat will lead to more scrutiny and petty decisions. A lot of schools with influential alumni are still upset we moved to the Big East and then the ACC. Those alumni would love to see us rot in the purgatory of as many sanctions as they could possibly lay on us.

I'm shocked that Whit has not called a press conference yet. He needs to get in front of this, and express his displeasure with the NCAA.

I'm also quite interested to hear Fuente's take on this -- especially after his comments saying to ask him after a decision is made and he will have way more opinions to share.

VT needs to go on the offensive and make it clear that this is unacceptable and they are disappointed in the NCAA. This can't just get swept under the rug.

Hoffman just got an entire segment about his situation on Golic and Wingo. This subject has real momentum. ESPN is officially calling out the NCAA for an explanation

To be honest, I was completely shocked it was allowed for Savoy.

If that happens, I think it should be reviewed by the VT compliance office. There was a similar GoFundMe when Savoy's brother died and VT had to get things cleared.

On second thought, maybe it shouldn't be reviewed by the VT compliance office...

He's been so critical of OSU and the response from OSU fans was so bad that he moved his family away from Columbus.

Agree, strong statement from Whit would be awesome here to add fuel to the growing media fire.

If no action, VT should have Brock lead the charge out of the tunnel all season long to allow announcers to pile on.

I see this as a great way to keep the conversation about this going throughout the year and a subtle, yet appropriate, fuck you to the NCAA. Too often these trending stories draw attention for a short time and disappear just as fast. I like the trend of more and more high-profile people calling out the NCAA on their BS.

VT should have Brock lead the charge out of the tunnel all season long to allow announcers to pile on.

Now THIS is a great idea. We all know how ESPN likes to beat a story to death (Boykins gloves, etc). Having Hoffman lead the team out of the tunnel all season or be a flag bearer or carrying a cancer ribbon flag or the team wearing some colored wristbands this season would get the story in every broadcast without a direct assault on the NCAA.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

Thank you SVP (now we're closer to even for JJ going to umd).

This is great that ESPN is calling out the NCAA but unfortunately after tonight's kickoff, all their focus will go back to the games on the field.

Maybe Real Sports needs to go exploring or the 60 minutes people. I'm afraid the timing of this decision only gives it 72 hours of legs in the traditional media until the games start.

I wouldn't be surprised to see a GameDay segment on it they way it has been gaining steam as of late.

Always been a fan of SVP, and now I REALLY like him.

Fair is fair, and while I expect the NCAA to push back on this, we deserve a detailed explanation on this, and it better not be "Oh, they filled in the form wrong."

It would almost be more embarrassing for the NCAA if they went the "filed wrong form" route as it would make them look completely incapable of actual thought.

Whatever. It was one bad year.

Seasonal Brew means High ABV for football season and standard the rest of the year.

With this story, it is extremely unlikely that any reasoning that the NCAA could give would make them look capable of actual thought.

Cam'Ron Kelly got his waiver accepted.

While extremely disappointed in this final decision by the NCAA, Virginia Tech Athletics and the football staff will continue to provide our unwavering support and compassion to Brock and his family.

This is the official statement from the athletic department from their press release on Tuesday. I think it's an acceptable response, though not as strong as most of us would like. It should've been publicized more on social media, but this is a good response.

Outside it's night time, but inside it's LeDay

This is the appropriate and diplomatic response and, like yourself, I'm cool with it.

I agree with some of the sentiments above about the university being careful, but letting the media and fans run with this one. This fire has started and doesn't necessarily need the university to make a more public statement than this.

I always rolled my eyes about the NCAA and how they acted unfairly but this is the first time I was actually pissed off about it.

I mean, I'm down with a burning it to the ground response, but some people on here are acting like the school hasn't said anything at all, which isn't the case
