So tonight I pulled up some forum threads, and much to my dismay an ad toward the bottom of the page started autoplaying some loud audio. It was for some online game (WW2 flight sim or something I think), and popped up a few times in a row with new tabs.
Joe, I assume you don't want terrible ads like this mucking up your wonderful site, so I figured I'd let you know it was happening.

Seconded on the annoyance, but I if it's what pays Joe for the site then I can reluctantly put up with it. They are aggressive though.... sadly. Even after I stop them it plays again or it just repeats continuously
Sadly true here as well, I don't mind ads with volume that play just give me an option to mute them.
Yeah, I don't want to run adblock and cut Joe out of some revenue, and I don't mind the standard banner ads at all. Sometimes more aggressive ads slip through onto pages they're not supposed to, which I suspect is the case here, and I wanted to let Joe know about it.
I want TKP but I also want the option to stop it.
You can block any ad from auto-playing in browser settings. Just depends on which browser you're using. I almost always block Flash - faster page performance and I can choose what plays.
Yeah, I caught that ad too. I was listening to the new Thor movie's score and kept trying to turn it down and Spotify was doing nothing. Turns out it was that ad.
I was going to start a forum topic on this... thanks for posting and for the options.
Joe, if you're getting mad cash on this I have a mute button it's all good.
Yeah but I couldn't get it to stop and I was trying to listen to a lecture and cruise this site at the same time.
It also slowed the page load a lot.
I use adblocker in google chrome, and I don't see any adds at all on the page. Try that?
I turned it off for TKP so Joe could generate some revenue.
Oh dang, so you're telling me all this time I thought I was cleverly giving him revenue, and not being annoyed myself, I was really just being computer stupid, and denying Joe revenue?
Ads are usually pay-per-click, instead of pay-per-view, so unless you're clicking on those ads, you're not generating TKP revenue.
#ClickOnAdsThatArentAnnoying #MakeJoeDollaDollaBillsYall.
I was wondering about this as well... and also if there was a way to donate to TKP to help Joe out? I love the site... and I'd donate a few bucks here and there if it kept some of the more annoying ads out.
Sidenote:
Anyone with AdBlock notice how many ads it blocks on Facebook? I saw that it was blocking 135 once.
I apologize. I hate the damn auto play ads myself and let our ad partners know they should not be part of our rotation when I signed up. I sent out emails tonight, hopefully they will be gone by Monday.
Thanks, you are the best webmaster! <3
Also, for what it is worth, the ads are a necessary evil. They keep the lights on, server running, and compensate the guys who put in all the work to bring the analysis we all love (and I don't mean anything I write). If folks are interested, I could setup a Paypal account for donations. At the end of the day, more cash means more content.
Please do, I can't donate much but I'll do what I can. I haven't been around websites that much, but I've been around enough to know it's not cheap.
I concur, but I want to help. This site is ridiculously good, and it's free. I want it to stay free, but I still would be willing help donate what I could
you should. I'm in for donating if you need it. or you could do a once a season tailgate funding drive. Pick one game, set up a donation account, have a target for enough money to throw a monster tailgate and let us give you extra for the site.
This!
i wouldnt even consider it a donation. you guys do a ton of quality work that we consume free of charge. set it up, i'll pitch in.
interested...do it!
Joe - speaking of $$ - will HoaT still be available when a Decade of Dominance shirts roll around? I keep meaning to get one and keep putting it off like an idiot, and it's close enough now I'm thinking I should just make it one order.
I can't give a definite answer to that. There's about 20 of those shirts left and they're in a box in my office. When they sell out, they're gone. However, combining orders doesn't really get you much. The price of the shirts are $25 each regardless of how many you buy. Tax and shipping was built into the cost of the shirt.
yeah so how do we go about purchasing said shirt since you still have some?

(There's been a link on the right sidebar since August.)
Thanks!!
Edit: Just purchased one! :D Can't wait to receive it. Hopefully it's here before Friday so I can wear it for #BEATMD
Let's help Joe get rid of those last
201918 shirts and keep TKP on the air.I see what you did there
Not sure if TKP has the resources, but if TKP could get their hands on a bunch of VT paraphernalia, I'm sure a silent auction would generate a lot of money. Especially, if you team up with a charity like what you're doing with your tailgate.
haha, it took me a while to figure out where the music was coming from the other day. its really nbd, i just muted the computer.
This should be taken care of and the ad zone that was causing the problem is back up and running. Let me know if it happens again.
Just got two ads, back-to-back with that World of Warplanes coming up, then some girl in what looked like a poorly made YouTube video blabbing about getting dressed or something. Not a huge deal, just annoying since I had just gotten off Skype for a meeting, flipped over here to TKP, and nearly got my ears blown off.
I Just listen to Enter Sandman on full blast and that seems to take care of the issue
I just got a couple of the auto-play ads. They're being activated above the Active Discussions column on the right hand side. One was for Chevy, and another was some sort of alkaseltzer or something.
I got something along the same lines with the alkaseltzer I think.
It's really not a big deal to me tho, I just refresh then keep on scrolling.
Damn it all. Thanks for letting me know.
I've gotten one right under the "Active Discussions" table for a free-to-play game called War Thunder probably 6 times in the last 10 minutes.
Normally I don't like resurrecting old threads, but this seemed like the best place to air ad grievances. Occasionally while mobile browsing I'll get a pop up trying to tell me my android has a virus. I don't know what control you have over the mobile ad carriers, but if you got rid of the pop ups that would be cool
Yeah, the other day was the first time in a while I got on using my phone and I had the same problem.
Is it still happening?
Just went through and haven't had it happen.
If you see it again, would you grab a screen shot and email it to me?
Will do, but don't use my phone as often since I know I'm bound to fat finger something.
Just a heads up- this happened to me yesterday and I got a couple of screenshots. I'll email them shortly.
It's happened to me- yesterday was the last I remembered it happening
I think I saw this a while back and emailed Joe about it. Chrome auto-downloaded something and then was smart enough to tell me that it didn't think I downloaded it and that it was something malicious, then recommended that I delete it. Chrome, you my only friend.
I didn't think to spin up Fiddler to see where the download was coming from, but I thought it also came from TKP due to the fact I had opened a bunch of threads and then got the download notification about that many times. Maybe we're being hijacked by the only competent computer engineer at LOLUVA?
